John McCain Faces the Consequences of His Party’s Fear-Mongering at Town Halls
Senator John McCain (R-AZ) faced the results of his party’s targeting of undocumented immigrants in Arizona as he held a town hall to discuss immigration reform yesterday.
In what was described as a “heated” gathering in Sun Lakes (a suburb of Phoenix), an “angry crowd” reacted badly when McCain told them he was against mass deportation. McCain tried to explain the need for immigration reform, “There are 11 million people living here illegally. We are not going to get enough buses to deport them.”
Watch here via Crooks and Liars:
Yahoo reported:
Some audience members shouted out their disapproval.
One man yelled that only guns would discourage illegal immigration. Another man complained that illegal immigrants should never be able to become citizens or vote. A third man said illegal immigrants were illiterate invaders who wanted free government benefits.
And then this quote, in which we can see the old John McCain bewilderingly facing the new John McCain. “McCain urged compassion. ‘We are a Judeo-Christian nation.’”
Someone should introduce McCain to his 2008 running mate. Remember when Sarah Palin’s prayer “warriors” prayed for Obama’s death? Right-leaning Christian compassion is so passé.
Tweets from local reporters via TPM:
Crowd starting to turn on @senjohnmccain on immigration. A former law enforcement official has been shouting. McCain says guy is a jerk.

“This is an Orwellian experience,” @senjohnmccain says after a very testy exchange re border. #immigration

At his next town hall at the Green Valley Community Performance & Art Center, the Senator joked, “It’s hard trying to do the Lord’s work in the city of Satan, and so it’s wonderful to be back here.”
Then, this, “”We need some more Border Patrol agents and we need more fencing. But we also need to use and implement the technology that we developed in Afghanistan and Iraq. The use of drones, the use of sensors.”
Who is going to tell McCain that the technology developed in Afghanistan and Iraq was specifically designed for use in war, and that we are not engaged in a war on our own soil against undocumented immigrants or those who we suspect of being undocumented immigrants (see where this goes? Papers Please gone wild).
Lastly, perhaps with so much time wasted chasing the imaginary ghosts of Behngazi conspiracies, McCain hasn’t had time to acquaint himself with the realities of this nation, and so he suggested that we throw those 11 million undocumented immigrants into jail. As if we had the jail room and endless taxpayer money, McCain said, “There’s nothing like a little time in the slammer to say ‘maybe I don’t want to try and cross the border again.’”
Maybe McCain doesn’t realize exactly why some people risk their lives to come here illegally. Here’s a hint: Jail may not be a deterrent, even if we could afford it. But the last I heard from a Republican, we were too broke to feed the elderly meals-on-wheels anymore and Medicare and Social Security have to go. I’m not sure where we’re going to get the money to lock up millions of people in the “slammer”.
It’s not so fun to face the consequences of your party’s fear-mongering and boogeyman scapegoating when you’re tasked with getting those same frightened people on board your immigration reform policy or else your party loses the next national election.
John McCain has been one of the saner voices on immigration reform from his party, but he’s now stuck dealing with the monster he helped create when he hail maryed via tea party darling Sarah Palin. Orwellian, you say, Senator? Do tell.

Yes, McInsane, and his VP pick helped to bring these teabaggers to the surface. He is just going to have to deal with them. I hope that he loses his Senate seat. But I guess that, McInsane, thinks that Sheriff Joe would have room in his jails, for 11 million immigrants, to profit from. But we will not be dropping drones on them!!

Can someone please tell them we’re in 2013 and we don’t go killing people anymore just because they’re brown skinned. My gawd what FOX can do to brains and my gawd what FOX has created. A bunch of uncivilized seniors fighting to keep their GOP leaders in office so the GOP can take their SS MEDICARE MEDICAID awya. I hope they keep ripping apart the coward. Well gee golly willickers mcsane..why don’t you call the great wise one who was way smarter than Pres Obama I’m sure she’d be able to calm these folks down with more of her conservative blood libel icoherent nonsense. Voting the GOP out office is what will happen in 2014. Watch!

Poor John. Music to my ears. And still, not a word about the Corporate World who are the happy employers of the undocumented. Getting away with paying slave wages & conditions, and profiting wildly from their services. Where is the outcry to stop them from either party? Not a mention, no prosecutions, no penalties. Once again, punish the poor for wanting to feed & educate their families.

We haven’t been able to finish the fence, because we haven’t been able to get enough undocumented Mexican construction laborers to do the job.

Obama is deporting immigrants faster than Bush. Republicans don’t think that’s enough.

Show me a 50 foot fence and I will sell you a 51 foot ladder

you’re absolutely right, the GOP has fostered these idiots think that guns are the only answer, if you’re not white you’re not right, and McCain doesn’t have to face that while he’s in Washington.
He went to a town meeting where the people were the absolutely the opposite of the majority of Americans. And how does he go back into the Senate and support his people, and do what the people of the United States want him to do?
The Republican Party has twisted itself into a snake and it will never get out from under the damage that it has done

Why is McCain doing back flips again in an attempt to look all maver’icky AGAIN!? I doubt seriously if he will run again, therefore he doesn’t “need” the local Latino vote. His primary purpose as Senator has been to keep the military complex gravy train rolling through AZ; that’s all he’s EVER done for AZ…that and try to make holes in the Grand Canyon by selling land rights to foreign mining corps who would get ALL rights/minerals, not us. What’s he up to and why now?
BTW, on a anecdotal note, the majority of the 55+ retirement communities of like McCain visited (the ones on the commercials that looks so “open”, with all the latest, greatest whistles and bells) are nothing but havens for ignorant republican bigots and their Stepford wives. Seriously…these places are only an”illusion”, sort of like a little town in a Steven King novel. We know several couples from various states who are not “R” people, did not listen to our pleas of “don’t do it, you’ll hate it”, bought in anyway…and, in less than an year, the sign was on the lawn…Hated it!

Oh I like this cry. “Catholics are okay until they’re brown people coming over the border! Oh save us big government that we don’t want!”

John McCain really needs to get over the fact he lost to the first African American President and basically started the whole tea party movement. the republicans/tea party will never help America because the only thing they are worried about is that taxes NEVER increase for wealthy people. The saddest part of the whole thing is most of the people that voted Republican earn under (waaaaay) under $100,000.00. Think they will ever wake up and smell the coffee????
