John McCain of Palin Infamy Dares to Question Susan Rice’s Qualifications
Today, the Senator told CBS News that he would block Ambassador Susan Rice’s confirmation if President Obama nominates her as the next Secretary of State, saying she’s ‘not being very bright’ and ‘not qualified.’
Perhaps, but rumor has it Susan Rice has actual foreign policy experience that expands past what she can see from land here in America.
Watch here via CBS:
McCain said of Rice, “she’s not qualified.” This he based not on her ability to see Putin rearing his head over Alaska, but on the more subtle notion that Rice got something wrong about Libya when speaking the to the media. Specifically, McCain faults her for asserting that the attack was spontaneous in her initial media appearances. This, of course, was her knowledge based on the intelligence provided.
Here’s a refresher for McCain, who should know a bit about protocol by now — on her September 16 appearance in front of the media (emphasis mine):
RICE: Well, first of all, Chris, we are obviously investigating this very closely. The FBI has a lead in this investigation. The information, the best information and the best assessment we have today is that in fact this was not a preplanned, premeditated attack… Obviously, we will wait for the results of the investigation and we don’t want to jump to conclusions before then. But I do think it’s important for the American people to know our best current assessment.
It is not Rice’s assessment, but the Director of National Intelligence’s assessment that McCain is criticizing. On the 28th of September, they issued a statement saying that they initially thought the attack “began spontaneously” and that new information caused them to come to a new conclusion. How hard is this for Republicans like McCain (who’s gotten it wrong by rushing in head first time and time again) to understand?
McCain tried all of the Fox talking points about Rice (which aren’t worth repeating), and then suggested that perhaps she could be cleared via a select investigative committee for “misleading” the American people. No word yet on whether McCain regrets picking a secessionist supporter as his VP, or if he thinks perhaps he should be investigated for recklessly misleading the American people that his pick was qualified and/or mentally capable of being a Vice President. From many accounts, she was neither.
McCain also said at minimum Rice was “not being very bright.” We are unclear what the problem is, if indeed the Senator does think this, unless the Senator has buried the painful memories of his Vice Presidential pick Sarah Palin. Palin thought a VP got to tell the Senate what to do, thought we shared a border with Iraq, and didn’t know the difference between North and South Korea. Sarah Palin was stumped by Katie Couric when asked what she read to keep informed. Palin never got over that “gotcha”.
But McCain should take great comfort in the knowledge that in Republican circles, being bright is only a detriment to service as a puppet to the elite. Furthermore, as he set about trying to prove in 2008, being bright isn’t a qualification for being a heartbeat away from the Presidency in the GOP.
McCain keeps reminding us that he still thinks Palin was a great pick. When the man who gave you Sarah Palin tells you that Susan Rice is not bright or qualified, it’s best to run that through the McCain filter for context. Susan Rice can tell you what she reads, and she has never pointed her fingers skyward to claim that being able to see the skies gave her foreign policy experience. Susan Rice has actual foreign policy experience as the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
In fact, Susan Rice would have been a better VP pick for John McCain in 2008 based on her resume alone. To wit, according to her bio, Rice “served as a Senior Advisor for National Security Affairs on the Obama for America Campaign. She later served on the Advisory Board of the Obama-Biden Transition and as co-chair of its policy working group on national security. From 2002-2009, she was a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution where she focused on U.S. foreign policy, transnational security threats, weak states, global poverty and development. From 1997 to 2001, Ambassador Rice was the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs. As Assistant Secretary, she oversaw the management of 43 U.S. Embassies and over 5,000 U.S. and Foreign Service national employees, with a bureau-operating budget of over $100 million and a program budget of approximately $160 million annually. In 2000, Ambassador Rice was co-recipient of the White House’s 2000 Samuel Nelson Drew Memorial Award for distinguished contributions to the formation of peaceful, cooperative relationships between states. From 1995-1997, Ambassador Rice served as Special Assistant to President William J. Clinton and Senior Director for African Affairs at the National Security Council at the White House.Prior to this position, she served as the Director for International Organizations and Peacekeeping on the National Security Council staff from 1993 until 1995.”
Also, Rice has a PhD in International Relations from New College, Oxford University, England, where she was a Rhodes Scholar. Meh — I won’t go on about her winning a prize for the most distinguished doctoral dissertation in the United Kingdom because I fear it will only distress Republicans who already harbor suspicions about smart people.
But see? As U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Susan Rice probably knows that Africa is a continent and not a country, as the Senator’s Vice Presidential pick thought. Qualifications!
John McCain hasn’t been the same since he sold his soul to the devil only to lose in the end after making an international fool of himself by picking Sarah Palin (and, unwittingly, it seems, her witch doctor) as his VP. Not bright! Anyone would be bitter.
Senator John McCain wants Ambassador Susan Rice and her PhD and her decades of experience to get off his tinfoil lawn. Winkers only, please.
Update: In his press conference this afternoon, President Obama was asked about McCain’s attacks on Susan Rice. He was righteously outraged, saying, “But let me say specifically about Susan Rice, she has done exemplary work. She has represented the United States and our interests in the United Nations with skill and professionalism and toughness and grace. As I’ve said before, she made an appearance at the request of the White House in which she gave her best understanding of the intelligence that had been provided to her. If Senator McCain and Senator Graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me. And I’m happy to have that discussion with them. But for them to go after the U.N. Ambassador, who had nothing to do with Benghazi, and was simply making a presentation based on intelligence that she had received and to besmirch her reputation is outrageous.”

Somebody should tell that bitter old man that there are clouds to wave fists at and kids to order off of his lawn. Assessing intelligence after bringing that idiot Palin into the public eye is really not his thing.

McCain continues to practice tsunami-like anti Obama racism to appeal to his right wing extremist base in Arizona.
McCain doesn’t have America’s interests at heart. He is a mental midget with an oversize eqo who believes he is important because of his high achieving father and grandfather.
This is the real John McCain.

Speaking of “not being very bright”: tell me again why the Republicans listen to the 1st man in the history of the USA to lose the presidency to a black man? McCain-the guy that had to “suspend” his presidential campaign because he couldn’t manage two things simultaneously
[My question is for Republican lurkers. I find the Republican fluctuating/inconsistent mores on grudge holding fascinating.]
Shame on McCain. Shame on the Republicans. The old guard was honorable once.

On the PBS Frontline documentary about Wall Street there was a mention of that whole “campaign suspension” moment. A Bush Administration official was questioned about it and he very pointedly said that McCain was bumbling, lacked clarity, and was not in the least bit Presidential during the meeting with President Bush. It was farce and posturing. John McCain is making a joke of himself. To think, he was once considered a voice of Republican moderation.

I used to suspect that McCain is in the first stages of dementia, I may have been right. To put Palin a heart beat away from the presidency proves that he is not the sharpest tool in the box!

Poor old fool Mc Cain
He could do so much for the country and for AZ.
He can start by going home, not run for anything and quit saying stuff that only show how disconnected from reality he is.
His only concern is to be re-elected, and for that he would would do anything.
He does not stand for anything or anyone, just what he thinks will get him back to the “broken government” he has been part of since he got into politics 300 years ago.

The attack was spontaneous. Had the embassy attacks in Egypt and other countrys not occurred the Libyan attack wouldnt have either. It was an opportunity for them to strike.
As far as McCain goes, he used up any honorable capitol he ever had with me when he ran for president. We now see what kind of president he would have been

Sadly the time has come for John McCain to take a bow and disappear. It really does make me feel bad when I see what this American hero has become. He sold hid soul when he picked a Palin.

Oh that he were an American hero !
McCain had a known history of being a “cowboy” of a pilot i.e. poor judgement, show off, took unnecessary risks etc.
While I have to have some respect for ANYONE who survives as a prisoner of war, that does not a hero make! He wrecked his plane and was taken prisoner. Could happen to anyone but with his poor flying record it makes me suspect. In any event, crashing and being taken prisoner does NOT make him a hero.
Now to the point: AFTER THE SHAME OF SARAH PALIN MCCAIN OUGHT TO HAVE THE GOOD JUDGEMENT, THE GOOD TASTE, THE DIGNITY NOT TO CRITICIZE ANY FEMALE FOR ANY OFFICE.
After Palin, IF HE HAD A BRAIN IN HIS HEAD, he would know better than to say anything to anyone in the political realm that would cause Sarah Palin’s name to be mentioned in the same sentence with his own.
HOW STUPID ! I thought he had more political smarts than this.

He was also disobeying orders at the time and his recklessness caused American deaths. John McCain also barely graduated from the Naval Academy – close to the bottom of the class. In some ways he and Sarah Palin were well suited; not too many brain cells between the two of them.
What a joke for him to call a woman who graduated with honors, was a Rhodes Scholar and has an Oxford doctorate not “very bright.”
John McCain should have retired after losing the presidential race in 2008. He is clearly not capable of minimal rational thought.

WMD & Sarah Palin these two things alone give McCain no credibility. He is like the sports star who doesn’t know when to walk away and leaves with a tarnished legacy.
McCain needs to go quietly into retirement. He should follow W’s example and hide under the covers.
It is interesting that former GOP presidents and presidental candidates fade in public disgust while Bubba keeps going strong and is loved around the world. I think that is a strong legacy for liberal ideas.

McClown’s selection of Simple Sarah will be one of the most enduring aspects of his legacy long after he’s gone from this life. I firmly believe that his actions and bitter attitude in the past few years are a more accurate reflection of his true character than his military service. He’s a hateful, bitter loser who didn’t deserve to occupy the White House and doesn’t deserve a seat in the Senate anymore. He has squandered any honor he ever possessed by putting party before country when he selected a bona fide ignoramus to be the person to take over in the event that he wouldn’t be able to continue the presidency if he should win. To that end, he pandered to the worst elements in his party and continues to do so by trying to gin up a scandal in order to embarrass the president.

I have always admired John McCain for all of the same reasons that I now believe he should retire from public life to save instead of tarnish his admirable and heroic service to our country, which, until these last few years, has been exemplary. His years as a POW speak volumes about his courage and love of country. He may not have been first in his graduating class and he may well have been a risk taker but who among us would have been willing to take his place in that very unpopular war or the more recent ones, for that matter? Why do you think we send our young people to war first? Because they are risk takers! Because I never believed he had to cater to the extreme base of his own party I became disillusioned early on during his presidential campaign. I was still willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. And the came Palin. That did it for me. McCain has lots of reasons to be bitter. However he has almost always taken the high road until recently. Now, sadly, he seems driven by misguided hatred AND bitterness. Even ignoring his obvious hatred for President Obama, going after Susan Rice is the height of hypocracy. He seems willing to cut off his nose to spite his face. He was very willing to forgive Condi Rice and her WMD’s and defended her publicly but wants to crucify Susan Rice. How many deaths did WMD cause? At this point he has lost his credibility completely and now seems to be in the process of losing his integrity. It’s a sad, NO, pathetic situation when even the MSM mention possible senility as a cause for his dramatic erratic personality change. If it is I assume we will find out some day. If it is a combination of vitriol and bitterness then it is a mess of his own making and he should do the honorable thing, once again, and leave with at least some dignity and reflect on the damage he contributed to himself and his own party, a very sad situation indeed for a man once held in such high esteem.

I hav alot of respect for Mccains status, frm one veteran to another. In increased when he told lady Obama wasnt an Arab. Since then hes lost all credibity. The Repbublicans are a dying breed. The facts r america is more brown now and gettin browner. Most of these people are middle income to lower and they are not accepted by the Reps. As u notice their new response for 2016 is get more of the latino vote, they have no interest in courtin the african americans. I guess we want too much stuff, according to Bill O’reilly.

Susan Rice has a lot of credentials, unlike Simple Sarah, who ran up a deficit as mayor of Wasilla and quit her gubernatorial post halfway through her term. Unlike Simple Sarah, she is well-acquainted with both national and international isssues, or no one with an ounce of integrity or brains would have ever promoted her to the positions she has occupied. As for Simple Sarah, she has become more and more irrelevant, marginalized even by her own party. They don’t reject her regressive ideology, they just reject her because she was on the losing presidential team in 2008 and has become increasingly unpopular since then. So, it makes no sense to use her previous elective offices as justification because she was a failure at both.
