Jon Stewart Rips Paul Ryan and House Republicans for Voting Against Sandy Aid
Jon Stewart ripped the 67 House Republicans who voted no on flood insurance funding for Sandy victims, and exposed the hypocrisy behind their ideology.
Here is the video from The Daily Show:
After dismantling Paul Ryan’s bogus reason for voting no on the bill, Jon Stewart had a message for House Republicans,
By the way, you can’t just change the rules of the game in the middle of a disaster. The deal is, if your part of the country gets shellacked by a disaster, we all kick in a couple of shekels. You want to change that deal? Vote on it when people can’t build sandcastles in their living rooms. The truth of the matter is this whole principled ideology thing that you are putting out there is bulls**t anyway.
Exhibit A: Mississippi’s honorable Steven Palazzo…Palazzo is the guy who just last year was asking for, you guessed it, funding for the National Flood Insurance Program for a storm that took place in his area over seven years ago.
(Video of Palazzo asking for more flood insurance money last year.)
Oh, the flood insurance program you vetoed to reimburse? Here’s a thought experiment. Let’s pretend that instead of your constituents in Mississippi, it’s someone else’s constituents in New York, and instead of seven years later, it’s two months later, and instead of a baseline temperature of sixty degrees, it’s f**king freezing, and instead of being an assh**e, you weren’t. Look Republicans, I get that you are the party of limited government. But we’re not talking about Obamacare here, this was two paragraphs giving aid to people in need and you guys still couldn’t bring yourselves to vote for it, because of some stupid principle that you yourselves only occasionally live by. And here’s thing, if you guys can’t vote for this then we’re f**ked for the next two years. And I’m not saying you’re responsible for all the problems in our country, but you sure are making them a lot harder to fix.
Jon Stewart was discussing the concept of our obligation as a society to help people who find themselves in need through no fault of their own. The vote to give additional borrowing authority to the National Flood Insurance Program had nothing to do with disaster relief. It was about allowing the program and by extension our society to meet our obligations.
After this website published the initial story about the 67 House Republicans who tried to rip off Sandy victims, Republicans claimed that the bill was full of pork, and that the full story was not being told. As Stewart pointed out, there was no pork in the bill. The disaster relief bill and the flood insurance bill are two different pieces of legislation. Paul Ryan and his defenders continue to flat out lie, and invent justifications for their opposition to the bill.
Bernie Sanders recently got to the heart of what this current debate is really about. Whether the issue is the deficit, taxes, or disaster relief, the root disagreement is the same. Republicans are arguing that our societal obligation is to the wealthiest Americans. They are rejecting the idea that our society has an obligation to those who lose their jobs through a recession, or can’t work due to age or disability, or lose everything because of a natural disaster.
House Republicans are telling the American people that unless you’re rich, you’re on your own. It is this philosophical belief grounded in extreme conservatism that outraged Jon Stewart.
Jon Stewart and millions of Americans are realizing that House Republicans aren’t just out of step with the will of the people. They are also out of step with basic compassion and humanity.

I’m still trying to figure out how Walker and Ryan got back in..with all the research available now a day..one only has to Google info…I do it from my Android cell…I’m so glad the majority of the American people saw thru Ryan for Vice President…although somethings up with Wisconsin voters in Janesville who think he good for them…when the shoe drops..and it will..I’ll be laughing..Ryan is a self righteous idiot…right on Jon Stewart for always telling it like it is…in life!

I totally enjoy your show and your comments but this was your finest hour. You were so spot on to include what Ryan said about the “pork”contained in the bill. And to show how Polazzo speaks out of both sides of his mouth. This GOP is so disgusting, so shameful and what I am more amazed at is the inability of people, some of them friends of mine who are Republicans to see how horrible these people are. That is what perplexes me the most. It’s like my friends and others are drinking mass amounts of their Kool Aid. Now don’t get me wrong, I see things on this side I want Obama to get with the program on like GMO’S and Fracking but great Gehossaphats can I see one thing these guys are doing that is for the good of our country and our people and not totally for their rich contributors? NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Stewart does it once again despite 3 weeks off — calls it like it is with evidence to boot. The “Pork” listed in two paragraphs on one sheet of paper was especially enlightening as he waved it in front of the camera, all the while verbally blistering the Repubs/Ryan. It looks like his “fake news” will continue to preempt both standard and Cable News Reporting even AFTER the Election. Thank God.

How about we with hold the politicians paychecks/perks until they pass the disaster relief bill instantly! Time for term limits and they lose all their perks when they leave. No retirement, health insurance. They go on SS and Medicare when they retire. Serve your term and go back to regular citizen! Welcome to the real world where your rich friends can’t buy your vote. Any money you earn in office, outside of your salary, goes into a slush fund to pay down the deficit!

John Stewart is exactly right, The right wing has lost their minds and they are showing just how out of touch they really are, I can’t understand why anybody would associate themselves with a political party that offers nothing but hatred, that’s it, they bring nothing to the table but hate for the Government and President Obama. America should altright reject this type of political entity and not vote for any Republicans that have done anything to obstruct and hurt America, most have so, it should be easy to not vote for rats like McConnell, total racist coward, Boehner, a worm who is so scared of the teabaggers, he is perfectly worthless, Eric Cantor needs to go, he has obstructed emergency funding before, I could go on and on about what dirt bags the Republican party has turned into, America, please vote these loser, hateful hypocrites out of office, their free ride needs to come to an end, since they hate Government so much.

I think it is time to call a spade a spade! Jon Stewart does an EXCELLENT job of ‘calling out the liar’—but what about the rest of the media corporations? Has the News become mere entertainment? Is the goal to give the followers what they WANT to hear? or what is ‘THE REAL TRUTH’? Back in the day, persons such as Walter Cronkite–who I watched every single evening—-did the research, and the due diligence to get to the bottom of the issue for what it really was— as Jon Stewart does, to learn the truth–and the truth was reported and questioned, and we felt we could trust him. These days, snakes like Cantor and Ryan will tell you anything they want you to believe and no one questions it!!! WHY? Because the news stations are afraid the money behind the news will be taken away from them–therfore, to hell with the truth!? Secondly–we have to STOP electing people to office just ‘because’ we recognize their name ‘for some reason’…or we like the sound of the last name better than the other one—and therefore get the vote! It is time to get down to the nuts and bolts of what these people DO as opposed to what they SAY they will do, while on the campaign trail. consequences MATTER! Those on that list above have figured out that Americans are stupid enough to never question an elected official–even if they don’t know what he/she stands for. I am ALSO in favor of term limits—-too much time in Congress does NOT mean that a congressman becomes a ‘Statesman’…but it does make them RICH..and lastly–Congress members who are of two generations ago, should be replaced by those who are part of the current generation—itis not feasible to make decisions for people of the current generation, if you are still stuck in the 1950′s! So many in congress are over 70 yrs old!!!! They should have a mandatory retirement age like with the rest of us!!!!!

“Sirius” you are right on most of what u said but, not all. Some of the Dems. of yrs. ago are still good in congress. Most of them respect women, but not all. I’M a Dem. as u can tell & I wouldn’t vote for a repuke. if u held a gun to my head. I’M 73 yrs.old & have never seen more than 2 or 3 good repukes. Can’t stand them, hope they all loose when their time is up except for 1 or 2 of them if they run again & any new ones that come along.

A Katrina echo in Sandy anger
Key point here
To make his case against Boehner and the House, Christie dropped an interesting nugget. Despite the indelible images of horror and heartache that came to define the aftermath of Katrina, it took Congress 10 days to send aid to the Gulf Coast. “Sixty-six days and counting,” Christie said yesterday. “Shame on you, shame on Congress.” Today marks day 67.

“House Republicans are telling the American people that unless you’re rich, you’re on your own. It is this philosophical belief grounded in extreme conservatism that outraged Jon Stewart.”
I’m not sure it is grounded in extreme conservatism. I think it is masquerading as extreme conservatism, which is even more disturbing.
