The conceit that soldiers are “dying for god” is a much bigger force in the two wars in the Middle East. People here don’t realize that soldiers are bathed daily in godly hatred of Muslims, and many civilians have died as a result. The force behind this is The Family (C Street), which includes many members of Congress, constantly pressing the death of separation. They have seized incredible power in the Air Force Academy, where students’ progress and appointments are dependent on the extremism of their religious professed.

Responsible religious leaders generally favor separation quite strongly. It is those seeking power and wealth through their ministries who push the death of religious freedom. Check “Americans United” and its magazine “Church & State,” headed by the Reverend Barry Lynn.

All we have to do to realize what a disaster that combining church and state would be is to look at other countries that have done this.

Saw a bumper sticker on a car from Mass. the other day. “There is no good war. There is no bad peace.” Maybe not profound, but I agree with the sentiment.

And yes, even in the UK and Canada, cenotaphs have the phrase “For God and Country”. Irks me every time I see it.
