While Lying about Everything, Paul Ryan Accuses Obama of Dishonesty
Paul Ryan (R-WI) spread what can only be seen as Glenn Beck logic this morning on Meet the Press. Ryan spent an entire clip impugning President Obama’s motives and then wrapped it up by lecturing that we can’t move forward by impugning people’s motives.
If only Paul Ryan would listen to Paul Ryan.
Watch here:
Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
Here is the poisoned well of a premise for Ryan’s argument that Republicans are being reasonable on budget issues and the President is not:
“Well, I don’t think that the President thinks that we actually have a fiscal crisis. He’s been reportedly saying to our leaders that he doesn’t think we have a spending problem, we have a healthcare problem. That leads me to think that he thinks we ought to have more government controlled healthcare and rations. I don’t think that’s going to work.”
Problem number one: “I don’t think the President thinks that we actually have a fiscal crisis.” So, now we’re going on Paul Ryan’s opinion of the President’s thought process. Impugning the motives of the opposition is a logical fallacy used by people who have no argument. It is obvious to anyone with more than one brain cell that the President is aware of our fiscal crisis. This is not a real issue.
Problem number two: “He’s been reportedly saying to our leaders that he doesn’t think we have a spending problem, we have a healthcare problem.” To whom did he say this? Reportedly means “according to rumor.” I’ve heard John Boehner spinning this to the press, but does anyone have this on the record? On par with Paul Ryan’s intellectual capacities, this is middle school rumormongering. It’s fine to repeat what he heard, but to use it as a foundation, as proof, of his final assertion is faulty. He should have more than his ideas of Obama’s motives and a rumor, but Ryan will say anything in order to avoid discussing the actual numbers on his budget, which he still has not had “time” to discuss with the public.
The meme that the President said this to Boehner has become the new “you didn’t build that” in Republican circles. Forbes reported it as fact: “President Obama has told House Speaker John Boehner (R., Ohio) that ‘we don’t have a spending problem’ because we have a ‘health-care problem.’” It should read “according to John Boehner,” but no; it’s become a fact in Republican circles.
Logic tells us that the President probably said something along the lines of how we don’t just have a spending problem; we also have a revenue problem (which is true and Republicans didn’t want to hear). Obama has said this before and since he’s made cuts, it’s clear that he doesn’t believe what Boehner wants us to believe Obama believes. Obama’s actions tell us about his beliefs more than Boehner’s memory. But given how Republicans willfully distorted the President’s on the record quote about “you didn’t build that”, we can just imagine how free Boehner felt to revise and parse a quote that only he heard. (No doubt Boehner was frustrated and embarrassed at this point, and any deflection to the President was a welcome reprieve.)
Problem number three: “That leads me to think that he thinks we ought to have more government controlled healthcare and rations.” It’s looking like the biggest problem is that Paul Ryan is “thinking”. Here again, he offers his opinion of the President’s motives and thoughts based on what he admits is a rumor, with nothing to back it up. He then mischaracterizes healthcare reform by tossing in a nod to the 2009 Lie of the Year with “rationing”, also known as Sarah Palin’s Death Panels.
Problem number four: “I don’t think that’s going to work.” This is the guy who still hasn’t done the numbers on his budget. This is the guy who uses logorrhea to cover up his inadequate knowledge (àla Palin, again).
Ryan’s premise is a fraudulent construction of impugning motives, attempts to discredit Obama and Democrats via ad hominem attacks in order to paint their position as suspect, mischaracterizations and moving the goal posts. He then uses this false premise to launch into his argument that many Democrats agree with him on how to reform Medicare and “entitlement programs”.
I have a hard time believing that there are “many” Democrats who don’t know that Paul Ryan has yet to do the math on his “reforms”, or who don’t understand that contrary to Republican fantasy, Obama Care actually reduces the deficit. Of course, Gregory doesn’t ask him to name these Democrats, so we are left with yet more imaginary proof of Ryan’s alleged reasonableness. Yes, that is what he’s selling. Ryan is selling himself as the middle and trying to paint Obama as the extremist. He can’t do this using reality, so he impugns motives and uses second hand information as a fact.
The problem, Ryan tells Gregory, is that leaders of “that party” don’t seem to ever want to come to an agreement with Republicans.
Gregory buys into the entire false premise and only reinforces it as true by falsely equating it with faux push back, pointing out that the President’s obstructionism might be the same thing as Republicans did to him when they decided to obstruct everything he did in his first term. I’ll note this since Gregory did not: The Republican meeting where they decided to obstruct the president was reported by someone other than the President. Additionally, Mitch McConnell himself admitted it in 2010.
Ryan then concludes that his concern is that the President “may be more concerned with political ends” like 2014 than he is with moving to the middle. More impugning motives in order to avoid the tough fact that while Republicans keep saying they didn’t get any cuts for the revenue, in fact they did get cuts. A lot of them. $2.2 trillion in cuts and $620 billion in tax revenue. In case Ryan hasn’t done the math yet, a trillion is more than a billion.
Ryan warns Gregory that Obama’s inauguration speech tells him that Obama is not looking to moderate or go to the middle (more on Ryan’s crystal ball into Obama’s motives to come). According to Ryan, Obama’s looking to go to the far left and he wants to fight Republicans every step of the way.
This is the Republicans’ new meme: President Obama is destroying them, he won’t meet with them in the middle, and he’s an extremist.
This accusation is coming from people so extreme that they lost members of their own party during the last election. At the end of this clip, Paul Ryan proves just how disingenuous he is, by claiming that it’s the President who is being dishonest, “This is the kind of honest debate we need to have, instead of impugning people’s motives.”
I kid you not. It doesn’t speak well of Paul Ryan’s alleged intelligence that this glaring inconsistency did not even threaten to embarrass him.

Lyin Ryan is the poster child for the Hypocrite party! This doofus has been on the government dole his entire life starting with survivor benefits from SS when his father passed away. He’s never had a job in the public sector, all the while being one of the “takers” he slams all the time.
What a joke!

Everything unappealing about Lyin’ Ryan that came out before and during the presidential election is on nauseating display again. His flagrant dishonesty and his pushing of hugely unpopular policies due to his tone-deafness to what Americans really want are his most distinctive character traits. Unlike Willard, who has basically left the political scene, we have to be subjected to his machinations because he did win re-election to his Congressional seat in the House.

Jeff12, what do you do for a living? It must be in some kind of sealed up cubicle to think like that. Just because somebody is beyond desperate and resorts to government aid does not mean they are unwilling to work. My highest paying job has been $10 an hour, and it stayed that pay for 2 years. I only finally accepted aid after selling off my vehicle, was denied extra time at work, my family was starting to starve, and we were close to losing the 2 bedroom duplex we 4 lived in.
This guy is a piece of trash, as was the twit he supported. The best part on that matter is that all the negative publicity I see about him is video footage of interviews with him, not people’s opinions or guess at his ideals. Just the words he sputters out.

Let’s pretend that what you are saying is true. Someone would rather stay home and do nothing but still receive a measly little paycheck from the government. How much do you actually think they make? They’re definitely not buying a car, going on vacation, or getting a house with that money. Hrm… I think the choice would be clear between a)getting a $400 check from the government, or b) get $1,200 – $2,000 working full time at a low paying job. I can prove that you are wrong with one simple fact. There are currently no job openings right now. You have no right to call Americans lazy and dependent until you see every office, store, and restaurant hanging those hiring signs. You complain that you have to pay taxes when there are people with college degrees that are struggling to survive at no fault of their own. Are you sure your American? It sounds like you hate the people in this country.

All you intended to do was lash out in utter hatred fueled by fox news talking points and armed with cliche insults ive heard dozens of times before, but never have I seen such attrocious spelling and grammar. Letters written from elementary school students to president obama were written with more mastery of the english language than what you just demonstrated.
When I see nonsense like this, I wish the south would secede and take every dumbass like you with them. Then, once Obama gets our nation back on track, erases the deficit, and amasses a surplus, we can send foreign aid to the southern nation that borders us in the form of medicine and educational material. Things that could truly help an ignorant degenerate like you, and your children.
That is… If your children dont flee to civilization in the north in search of some of that good obamacare and public education ;)

David Gregory also annoyed me for not bringing up the exact points your terrific article made… it was an exersise in restraint on my part… then to have to listen to jim demint…. saying basically the same things ryan was spouting… idiots… Andrea Mitchell got in some good points… but still… I think I will stop watching MTP until they get a new host… if you have guests on your show, you should call them out on their lies and distortions of character… it was a pointless interview as far as I was concerned… gregory let him distort the truth, and make unkind judgements of the President…

The actual “important” people are off doing important things and don’t waste time on TV talk shows with fluff media guys like Gregory. Ryan’s job is to look like he’s an important guy and lie into the camera; he’s just a “hey boy” who sounds about as convincing as Sara Palin (actually, he’s Palin’s follow-up act until they discover a feline version of Lyin Ryan).

If the liar is running for anything in the future it should be the sub 3 hour marathon. He was caught up in that lie while running as the vice president. I suggest rather than run for office in the future he should train for a sub 3 hour marathon. The numbers guy could “chart” out the course and lie to himself that he succeeded. Perhaps he could then be interviewed on ESPN afterwards with Lance Armstrong and announce their ticket for 2016. Liars just don’t get it!

So now they are coming up with a new catch phrase of “rationing”? They are trying to scare people in to believing that if we have a ‘socialized’ health care system it will be rationed and yet, because of the new health care law we actually created the ‘unrationing’ of health care from those who had health care and those who don’t. We now have a system of accountable for insurance companies that they cannot ration health care at the expense of people’s health.

From the beginning, Paul Ryan has come across to me as some low-life carny grifter with a face that belongs in the 1930s. He spouts Republican rationalization and lies to support the rich in this country at the expense of working families and the poor, and has the temerity to insult the duly elected President of our country, because frankly any reasoned, logical discussion of the facts about issues faced by this country, will expose the Republicans for exactly what they are – a bunch of thugs not interested in anything but widening the disparity between social classes, furthering hate and plain meanness – and thereby destroying any hope of that our country will succeed and its populace – all of it – flourish. Really sickening.

Want to simplify it, put it in language (and average household budget terms) everyone will understand? Then understand that the way you and I are treated by banks has nothing to do with the way our government borrows money. No matter what comes out of Ryan’s neck, no matter what convenient statistic you are repeating. When the public is able to ignore the Obama hate and look at fiscal policy reasonably, and able to read the President’s proposals thoroughly, everyone including you will find a plan that is worth enacting. Ryan’s trying to make all the good ideas sound as though his own, when he is flailing miserably in search of any usefulness as a human, let alone a Congressperson.

Ryan was caught telling so many lies during the presidential campaign that only a gullible tool would believe anything that he says. He lied about his time in finishing a marathon, about the work requirement in the welfare program, about the Medicare “cuts” that he included in his own budget, about caring about all Americans, about not requesting stimulus funds, etc. Lie after lie came out of his piehole, all in an attempt to become vice-president, ethics and good governance be damned! If Ryan’s mouth is open, he’s lying. I’ve never been as glad as I was on November 6, 2012, when Ryan and his wife, Romney and his wife, and all of the attendees at his election night event found out that Romney wouldn’t residing at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave and Ryan wouldn’t be residing at Number One Observatory Circle. A majority of the American people decided that they couldn’t stomach having two habitual liars leading our country.

“It is obvious to anyone with more than one brain cell that the President is aware of our fiscal crisis. This is not a real issue.”
No true Scotsman fallacy. I know it’s easy in the fever of a political rant (and a largely well-played breakdown of the logical inconsistencies of the opponent) to commit our own fallacies. Let’s try to be the side of the argument that actually presents evidence. A soundbite or documentation of Obama acknowledging the fiscal crisis would work. I know it sounds absurd but we have to cover our bases when debating.

Republican hatred toward President Obama is quite toxic and unjustified. This political party does not accept the election results and will do everything to derail the President’s agenda and Obama himself by trying to impeach him. Everything he introduces to bring up the country’s economy and moving forward is blocked and rejected by the Republicans. Working with the President to move forward is not part of their agenda. Members of the Republican party think only destroy Obama and to promote their own interests and not the well-being of the country. Obama is the defenser of the middle class, while the Republicans believe that the middle class is worth nothing to them. Go Figure.

Joy,
yes, by all means. Carry on with your “adult conversation, referring to people as “dog shit.”

Why dont Ryan, Walker, Fitzgerald and all the others get out of Koch brothers pockets. Those are the guys who want to run things. Debt? get the hell out of those sand boxes overseas. Waste of money there. Entitlements? BS Ryan. Tell government to stop raiding the money box. How about bringing jobs back that support a family. the more we make the more government does on all levels.

There they go again, referring to Medicare and Social Security as entitlement programs. I for one resent it. I have worked since I was 18 and paid into social security insurance and now that I am receiving it I am made to sound like I am some kind of looser living on others charity

Mr. Ryan, we really are NOT interested in what you have to say. So, keep it to yourself.

Paul Ryan, please pull up your big girl panties and get to work on working for the American people. If you self-proclaimed super citizens would spend less time babbling and more time thinking (wait, do you even have brains) we would be further along in getting problems solved. I think just about everyone is tired of listening to your rhetoric so shut up and stop spreading fear and lies and do your job. Oh, yes, Paul Ryan, you were elected to do a JOB, a job for the American people. It’s not your job to degrade the efforts of our president and I’m awfully tired of the disrespect shown to the president by the right wing nuts. Get to work slacker.

That is just one of the reasons he is not Vice President and Mitt Romney isn’t President.
