The McCain Backpedal on Benghazi Begins
Asked about Senator Reid’s brutal letter to him in which Reid denied McCain’s calls to head a special committee to investigate Benghazi, McCain said at a press conference at the Halifax International Security Forum, “I’m concerned about four Americans who died. Their families need to know the circumstances, why it happened, how it happened, and where responsibility lies. That’s all. That’s all that we’re seeking. We’re not seeing a confrontation with anyone. We’re not trying to quote ‘take on anyone.’”
McCain claims that he knew better than the entire intelligence community (also known in Republican circles as “the administration” now) and thus he is not taking back his criticism of Susan Rice. The Senator said, “No, because I knew it was a terrorist attack from the beginning. People don’t go to spontaneous demonstrations with mortars and RPGs.”
To date, no one has asked McCain how he can “know” with such certainty what happened in Benghazi when he was not there, and when he clearly did not read the intelligence reports sent to him that Rice based her comments on, or attend the briefing in which he could have more fully informed himself.
In McCain world, it was simple; he knew because there were mortars and RPGs there. And yet, it was not so simple. Shocking, I know. There were actually two attacks, and the intelligence community seems to think at this point that they may have been two separate attacks – perhaps one spontaneous and one planned or some combo thereof. Furthermore, Petraeus suggested that Rice’s talking points were the unclassified version of what happened, something McCain should have grasped for obvious reasons since he claims to be an expert at national security. Perhaps he expected us to send a cable to the suspects on day one.
But never mind McCain’s big talk on RPGs (you have to feel for the guy, clinging to his days as The Military Guy), what is really important here is that he now says he is not seeking a confrontation with anyone.
From lies and calling for a Watergate-esque investigation to “We’re not trying to quote ‘take on anyone,’” McCain is backpedaling. Not so fast, Senator.
Remember when then Republican presidential candidate McCain told us that we should not have a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq, because “we are succeeding.” It was at that time, in 2008, that Susan Rice, as Obama’s senior foreign policy adviser, sent reporters to a conflicting McCain statement from 2004, wherein he admitted that if the sovereign Iraqi government asked us to leave, we would have to abide.
McCain also joked in this same interview that rising cigarette exports to Iran might be a good way of killing them, “Maybe that’s a way of killing them. I meant that as a joke.”
Those were the good old days. McCain is now in full “suspend fictional Watergate Importance” mode. Perhaps that, too, was a joke.
The question we must ask ourselves is what next? Oh, but Sunday looms! We can’t have Sunday shows with McCain carrying neo-con water for the hawks. Any bets on whether the media will ask Senator McCain upon what evidence he based his allegations that the administration lied to the public on purpose? A statement that was in line with the unclassified (important note there that the Senator may wish to ponder) assessment of the intelligence communities is not a lie. New information is not a lie or a cover up.
The cover up would be if we were not told about the new information.
There are questions, but the questions are not why didn’t the intelligence community know what John McCain’s gut told him or what Mitt Romney wrongly claimed within hours of the attack or why did the intelligence assessment shift as new information came in. Those are the wrong questions. The real question here is, why is John McCain making incendiary, misleading claims with no evidence, and why does he think that he knows more than the intelligence community about an event at which he was not present.
One of those killed in the Benghazi attacks, Glen Doherty, was a colleague of one of PoliticusUSA’s writers, Ms. Leah Burton, at the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. He was also a highly decorated former Navy SEAL. On behalf of those who knew of his important work at MRFF where Doherty fought for freedom, respect and religious tolerance, we urge McCain and the Republicans to cease obstructing intelligence and clarity on these tragic attacks with their non-stop attempts to muddy the waters. If McCain and the Republicans would get out of the way, we might actually get some answers.
McCain’s attempt to use these tragic deaths to attack “the administration” is grossly offensive and transparently craven, as is his pretense that he is doing this on behalf of the families and friends who lost their loved ones. Rather, McCain acts in his own self-interest, replete with the bitter sour grapes of a sore loser. His behavior on this deeply sensitive matter is harming his alleged purpose, not helping.

As far as I’m concerned, he can backtrack all he wants. However, it doesn’t alter the fact that he was quite willing to politicize a tragedy even against the wishes of the families of the men who died, in order to embarrass the president. In addition, he was quite willing to smear the character of another dedicated public servant who did nothing to deserve his ugliness. He is backtracking only because he knows he doesn’t have a leg to stand on.

I agree.
When McCain, or any of his ilk, Etch-a-sketch Romney backpeddle days, hours after making a statement with sureness and confidence, there is NOTHING that could have happened to make them truly change their minds other than, getting “caught with their hand in the cookie jar.”
You would think these men are at least intelligent enough and practiced in political theater enough by now to think before they speak, at least long enough to realize by now that they are going to be torn apart and humiliated for making such public errors.
Having the poor judgment of attempting to spin their revenge into righteousness, especially after so many have been caught time after time after time after time, would give them pause to think. ESPECIALLY MC CAIN AFTER HIS SARAH PALIN DEBACLE.

You know I fell like there’s a fly in the ointment since the beginning of this whole Benghazi incident. Mitt coming out on TV before any official announcement, did he know something ahead of time. Remembering his comment about if something happening how he would use it to his advantage. Something is very strange how defensive the Republicans have been about the subject.

I had the same type of “feeling” especially when the statement Romney made was prepared 12 hours before he made it and of course even before the White House had commented. How was it possible that he knew enough to have that statement prepared and use in political manipulation. With Romney’s money and evil resources anything could be possible. I suspect that with the investigations in the Department of Justice against the Romney’s they might pull up stakes and leave the country. Just the way his great-grandfather did when he fled from Arizona to Mexico to avoid federal charges against polygamy. Except the Romney’s will probably chose a country that doesn’t have extradition laws. I doubt very seriously that we would ever see any of the Romney’s in prison, but You Never Know?

Got to put my 2 cents worth in here.
I too have felt there is something just wrong about how quick Romney jumped on that incident.
Don’t want to be paranoid, but after observing the lack of integrity and lack of character of Romney, he certainly is NOT beyond doing such a thing.
Can I say it out loud for all of us ?
I have to wonder if somehow Romney and all the big money that was backing him was involved in bringing this whole incident about.

There are many in this country who have empowered this man through recognizing him as a hero . He was shot down over North Vietnam and spent 5 1/2 years in a POW Camp . Does that really make you a hero or does that make you a soldier fighting an unjust war . The real heroes are those who gave their lives trying to protect their fellow soldiers . We in this country must raise the bar when considering who we recognize as heroes . John McCain has taken complete advantage of this label ( heroe ) and as such we have created a monster . Someone who believes he can attack the President Of The united States , simply because he has attained the status of hero . He is just very pissed off that he lost to President Obama in 2008 and this is his way of trying to get revenge. It is time for him to retire , not only that , I would like to see an investigation into his life and his treatment of those who he comes into contact each and every day . McCain did nothing in getting shot down.
Nor was he considered even a good pilot but rather a “cowboy” who had more than his share of “mistakes” causing damage to millions of dollars worth of military equipment and aircraft.
I give him credit for surviving as a prisoner of war, but he did nothing to earn the term “hero” and to use that term with respect to McCain diminishes those who truly deserve it.

I have searching the internet and asking that someone explain to me what did McCain did to make him a war hero? He was captured and held prisoner. So were more that 800 other men. Yet neither McCain or the lapdogs and hacks in the so-called media ever mention these me.
John McCain WAS NOT THE ONLY AMERICAN HELD AS A PRISONER OF WAR. So why haven’t McCain or the excuses for media even mention any other POW?
Of the 800 American POWs 661 returned home alive.
McCain did not go through anymore than the other POWs. Some of these men went through more than McCain, THEY RETURNED HOME IN A BOX.
McCain is spending the end of his career obstructing the President. He is just a bitter old man who can’t get over the fact that: 1) he lost the election, 2) he foistered that ignorant moran Palin on us, and 3) he lost it to a black man; A BLACK MAN.

McCain is experiencing a surge of projected emotions. Following the defeat of his candidate, he has slipped into a delayed hysteria over his own loss in 2008. As are the bitter secessionists and right wingnotnews people, who just thought Barack Obama’s win in 2008 was a fluke. Now his re-election confirms that the majority want to stay the course and rejected their campaign of voter suppression tactics, lies and hate toward large segments of the population Still denying defeat.

Having watched the despicable selfish actions of Romney claiming to have been a good “friend” of Glen Doherty’s – which could not be any further from the truth – and now McCain wallowing in his 2008 defeat anger also politicize the deaths of those killed along with our friend Glen in Benghazi is disgusting.
McCain and all these other sanctimonious assess had zero difficulty in buying the first diplomats Rice (Condaleeza) endorsement of the false story that Iraq was the source of the 9/11 attacks and they had WMDs in Iraq justifying war. Ask my fellow MRFF Board Member, Ambassador Joe Wilson what he has to say about that!
But when it is an Obama appointee, then it is all hands on the attack deck. It is unbelievable to me that they go so far as to call U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice “stupid”, as McCain did in the media this past week. The disrespect to her and to our president is embarrassing on a global level and how in the hell do we explain to our kids that there is anything okay about that?

It is obvious that McCain has lost control of his public behavior when he dares to call ANY one “stupid” after chosing Sarah Palin for his running mate and then being too afraid of her to put her in her place when she went “rogue” and stole his campaign away from him.
McCain knows what stupid is after his experience with Palin and the way she has shown the entire world who she really is since 2008—how how how can he be so blind to the way he appears now to the world to label someone with the credentials and intelligence of Rice as “stupid.”
He’s losing it and humiliating himself in the process.

John McCain would not have completed military academy were it not for the fact his father was a naval commander. As a naval pilot in Vietnam he acted like a cowboy until he was shot down and captured by the vietcongs
While in captivity he collaborated with the enemies and provided them with infirmation which led to the capture of other Americans
During his captivity McCain did all that she could to get him released the effort took its toll on her health. After his release McCain started dating a very rich beer heiress. He soon abandoned his wife and married the rich beer hileiress called Cindy McCain leveraged his ex-POW status into winning election to US congress. As a senator he courted Keating whose financial institution bilked thousands of middle class Americans of their savings Investigations into the Keating scandal found that McCain had aided Keating in his Illegal activities. McCain was found guilty but escaped further sanctions and kept his senatorial seat. McCain strongly supported the lie that Sadam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and the subsequent invasion of Iraq. He strongly supported Condoleezza Rice as Secretary of State even though she had orchestrated the deceitful campaign that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. He also played down the fact that as National Security Advisor to GW Bush, Condoleezza Rice failed to read all the signs pointing to the terrorist activities which culminated into the September 11 attacks on the twin towers. Since
his devastating loss to Barack Obama in 2008
McCain has not wasted any opportunity to criticize and embarrass the president even though he does not have the facts on his side

The gross way they have used this event, one might even say used it for political gain – was this just well timed before the election?
I think we need to investigate ourselves what these creeps are up to and why Susan Rice is in their cross hairs.

I’m with those who think McCain is having a hissy fit. What makes it worse is that he was made to support a candidate (Romney) that everyone knows he couldn’t personally stand. That meant he had to go through the loss to President Obama again.. He didn’t have to endorse Romney, but his loathing of the President was more palpable than his dislike of Romney.
Also–he knows he is becoming superfulous. His important chairmanship is being taken away because of term limits and he wonders how he will ever get on all the Sunday morning talk shows again.
His and Lindsay Graham’s sexist and horrendous meltdown over Ms. Rice was ugly and hypocritical— which is what McCain has become.

I live in Arizona (not bragging about it, just FYI so my 1.4 cents might make sense). AZ voters in Maricopa County – the largest one, just re-elected Sheriff OurPieHole. If that can keep happening, in spite of his office finally being caught not investigating crimes that I believed we all could agree were among the worst: rape and molestation charges that included child victims. If I remember right, the youngest among them was 9. Not even that was enough. Child victims who had been traumatized and violated, I’ve learned, is no good reason to tell Joe he’s gotta go. Knowing this, if you didn’t already, does anyone seriously think McCain is ever going to slide back into his Senate seat for as long as he wants to be. To borrow from John Lennon for a moment – one could rightly assert that McCain is more popular that Jesus in this state. Some might even “stand their ground” on you in a Starbucks if you say that isn’t so. The red elephants in this state are among the worse I’ve seen in my life! Republican leaders are so desperate to find something — anything — upon which to hang their “Obama should not have been reelected” hat that they are culling the tabloids and right wing conspiracy blog sites in search of kernels of scandal to serve as the basis for their faux outrage.
Hence their headlong stumble into irrational accusations and indignant chest-thumping, sans sound evidence, against Ambassador Rice. And as we have seen numerous times, when reality conflicts with their hyperbolic rhetoric, they will almost always ignore reality.

Nov. 18th, 2012 at 12:17 pm
The facts are clear:
. (1) prior to 9/11/12 numerous requests for additional security by Ambassador Stevens were denied. Questions are why? State dept rep testified they had the funds but denied the requests anyway. The Consulate had been attacked before and it was a well known fact Al Qaeda had bases in Benghazi.
(2) The attack on 9/11/12 lasted for seven hours. There were at least four request for help. Help did not arrive for at least six hours, maybe longer the timelines vary. Video stream of attack was sent real time to Officials in President Obama’s Administration. Questions are: We’re requests for help denied and if so by who? If no support available to send on a timely basis, why not?
(3) After the attack President Obama’s Administration and President Obama reported at least two different explanations for the attack. (1) The attack was due to a spontaneous riot in reaction to an anti Muslim You Tube Video which was promoted by the Obama Administration for 10 days. (2) President Obama stated at his second debate with Romney he knew from the start it was a terrorist attack. The questions are if President Obama knew from the start it was a terrorist attack why did he and his Administration mislead the public so long by claiming the attack was due to a video?
Bottom line, either the Obama Administration knowingly misled the public or they are incompetent when it comes to protecting American lives. When I see the posts here it greatly saddens me that so many people are turning their backs on the four who died in Benghazi begging for help that never came. Be honest and admit that under the same circumstances, if President Bush was our Commander In Chief, you all would be screaming for his resignation maybe even accusing him of murder.

No one is turning their backs on the four Americans who lost their lives in Benghazi, Mary. That is a RW talking point that has never been proven to be true. When Gen. Petraeus testified on Friday, he stated that the White House had nothing to do with the crafting of the statement that Amb. Rice shared with the public, and neither did she. He stated that he approved the statement before it was shared with the public. It was also revealed that the language had been changed so that the terrorists responsible for the attack wouldn’t discover that the FBI was tracking them. Some people should do the requisite research before jumping to inaccurate conclusions and pointing fingers at others who are innocent. Using RW talking points, you have unfairly accused the president and Amb. Rice of lying and being involved in a cover up without providing one drop of evidence because it’s what you want to believe. Never mind what Gen. Petraeus said in his briefing on Friday. In your mind and the minds of many others, due solely to your dislike of the president, he is automatically guilty. Also, you should be informed that I never held President Bush directly responsible for the many attacks on our embassies/consulates which occurred in his administration because as an adult, I realize that no president can control everything that happens, so you’re wrong again because you’re viewing the Democratic Party as being monolithic.
“Some intelligence analysts worried, for instance, that identifying the groups could reveal that American spy services were eavesdropping on the militants — a fact most insurgents are already aware of. Justice Department lawyers expressed concern about jeopardizing the F.B.I.’s criminal inquiry in the attacks. Other officials voiced concern that making the names public, at least right away, would create a circular reporting loop and hamper efforts to trail the militants.”
