Minnesota’s You Can Run Ministry: Gays Are Predators

Yesterday I talked about the tax problems of Minnesota’s rock-n-roll ministry, You Can Run But You Can’t Hide. But these would-be citizens of Heaven have another problem, a bigotry problem.

Lurking in all that alleged Christian love is a vile, burning hatred of all things homosexual. This is not unusual in itself. It’s sadly all too common on America’s religious right. As consensus moves in favor of LGBT rights, the reaction from the right becomes more extreme.

Not only is it morally wrong to grant gay couples equal rights with regard to marriage, but gays and lesbians are vermin, disease carriers, sexual predators.

If this all sounds a lot like the defamation of Jews during the Third Reich, it’s no coincidence. Christian intolerance was behind that campaign too. Enter YCR. All you have to do with the image above is turn the little Stars of David into rainbows – or maybe just go whole hog with the Nazi theme and use pink triangles. Why skim?

The Minnesota Independent quoted Bradlee Dean (the same guy who thinks he’s a citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven) making the following statement on YCR’s May 15th radio program on AM 1280 The Patriot:

“Muslims are calling for the executions of homosexuals in America. This just shows you they themselves are upholding the laws that are even in the Bible of the Judeo-Christian God, but they seem to be more moral than even the American Christians do, because these people are livid about enforcing their laws. They know homosexuality is an abomination.”

“If America won’t enforce the laws, God will raise up a foreign enemy to do just that,” Dean continued. “That is what you are seeing in America.”

“The bottom line is this… they [homosexuals] play the victim when they are, in fact, the predator,” Dean said, before going on to make a claim that has no basis in fact: “On average, they molest 117 people before they’re found out. How many kids have been destroyed, how many adults have been destroyed because of crimes against nature?”

Dean takes issue with this, accusing the writer, Andy Birkey of the Independent, of lying – a “misinterpretation by design,” and that by taking his words out of context he portrayed Dean and his ministry as advocating the death of homosexuals.

Let me make this perfectly clear — again.  We are opposed to the state, in any country, no matter what its religious tradition, in executing homosexuals.  We are against anyone, anywhere, at any time, who executes homosexuals for being homosexual.   We want to preach the Gospel to them, whatever may be the cost, to prevent that from ever happening.

Having said that, Dean goes back to his denunciation of the LGBT community and lifestyle:

The gay “movement” is part of a sexual revolution that has stripped sexuality of all moral significance for an entire generation. We cannot accept the physical prosecution of homosexuals and we cannot accept the proposal that homosexuality is either private or moral.

The problem for Dean is that we can listen to him speaking these words.  Birkey did not make them up:

Dean is far from alone in viewing homosexuality in this light. Bill James, a County Commissioner in Mecklenburg, North Carolina, is in the news for calling homosexuals “sexual predators” and homosexuality a “crime against nature.”

“Allowing homosexuals to serve in the U.S. military with the endorsement of the Mecklenburg County Commission ignores a host of serious problems related to maintaining U.S. military readiness and effectiveness, not the least of which is the current Democrat plan to allow homosexuals (male and female) to share showers with those they are attracted to.”

And as Change.org reports, “Chick-fil-A has joined with the Pennsylvania Family Institute to sponsor a February event aimed at preserving “biblical” marriage and denouncing marriage equality for same-sex couples.” The PFI says same-sex couples “harm civilization.” And here I was thinking that civilization meant being civilized as opposed to barbaric. What did I know?

We can’t say then that Dean keeps good company but we can say that he keeps low company.  A society like ours should have no time for pseudo-science and pseudo-morality. We have the lessons of history behind us. Rather than acting like Nazis, it seems to be we should try to take a step forward.
