Mismanaged Arrogance: Romney Overbills the Media for Covering Him
Mitt Romney ran as a “businessman” who could save America with his business know-how. Apparently that know-how did not extend to his campaign, suggesting once again that squeezing the money out of a fledgling business is not the same thing as actually running one.
Last week, the Romney press corp wrote a formal complaint regarding the charges that they say far exceed any other campaign. Today, after getting no response from on high, some of the press corp alerted American Express that they are contesting the charges.
Citing examples of “exorbitant charges” for food and holding costs, the press corp detail in their letter to the Romney campaign, “Some examples: $745 per person charged for a vice presidential debate viewing party on Oct. 11; $812 charged for a meal and a hold on Oct. 18; $461 for a meal and hold the next day; $345 for food and hold Oct. 30.”
These are no small outlets fighting back against the Romney campaign; signing the letter are the higher ups from the Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, USA Today, Agence France-Presse, Washington Post, Yahoo, Buzzfeed, and Financial Times. This isn’t their first rodeo.
They also have questions about food ostensibly provided for them but eaten by the campaign staff. “These costs far exceed typical expenses on the campaign trail. Also, it was clear to all present that the campaign’s paid staff frequently consumed the food and drinks ostensibly produced for the media. Were any of the costs of these events charged to the campaign itself, to cover the care and feeding of its staff?”
Earlier Buzzfeed reported that the campaign went all out at the viewing party, providing massage tables and lavish food and booze. Unfortunately, these perks weren’t discussed with all of the media that are now being charged for them.
Buzzfeed noted wryly that an anonymous campaign aide said that the bills were indicative of a mismanaged campaign rather than deliberate overcharging, “One campaign aide, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the bills were not artificially inflated, but rather the product of a generally mismanaged campaign. The aide said the advance team — which was tasked with arranging meals and accommodations for the press — failed to communicate with other elements of the campaign and consistently spent more money than necessary.”
However, the press corp discovered that they are apparently being upcharged for transportation by the campaign. Writing that the costs for transpo exceeded the costs during the primaries and yet was spread out among a larger pool of reporters, sometimes exceeding $1,000.00 a day, they note, “One news organization contacted two of the bus agencies used by the campaign; it was clear from their reporting that the costs you charged us far outdistanced what you paid for the transportation.”
That’s called overbilling.
Apparently the media outlets began complaining during the campaign about the high prices. An aide said that senior campaign staff just blew the complaints off.
Now American Express is being asked to intervene on behalf of the media outlets. I hope they have better luck than I did the last time I tried to get my credit card company to put a hold on paying something I never authorized. It seems credit card companies now take corporations’ word over actual written and signed contracts — a trend that bodes well for Mitt Romney.
The question remains, is this arrogance or bad management – or both? It appears to be bad management until we get to the transportation charges, which the campaign appears to have overcharged the media for as if they are taking a cut off the top. Rather tacky. Any way you slice it, this is hardly the picture of a fiscally conservative campaign. They come off as throwing money around carelessly and yet again, no one at the top paid attention. I’d call that mismanaged arrogance from the top, hardly a new charge against the Romney campaign or the man in charge of it.

Mitt Romney’s arrogance is now legendary, and in this case it was combined with bad management that left a bad taste for many folks in the media. It’s laughable now that anyone ever entertained the idea that he was a successful businessman in comparison to President Obama’s widely derided past as a community organizer. It’s obvious that the skills President Obama acquired in that capacity have served him very well, especially when running for president. What’s equally obvious is that Willard Romney was way out of his league and that nothing in his role as a corporate raider prepared him to successfully run for president.

I think the press cost Mitt Romney a lot more than Mitt Romney cost the press.
Years from now this will be looked at as an example of the media influencing an election.

Really no need for name calling. I doubt many people ever gave much thought to how the media’s expenses were paid for on the campaign trail. I’m surprised the campaign billed them instead of the media outlet just paying their own way.
Tom
Dec. 18th, 2012 at 11:34 pm
I think you misunderstood. I thought the press just paid for their own travel. To me, using the campaign to pay and then reimburse them would be unethical since it could be a way for them to provide bribes through underbilling or for the press to give donations to the campaign through overbilling.

If these bills were sent through the U.S. Mail that constitutes mail fraud. Bust him. You know, if the Robme campaign (I didn’t realize how really apropos that name would become)had simply advised the press corps that his campaign would be charging them like that in advance, the solution would have been simple. The Press corps could have simply ignored his campaign, not gone on the press bus or be around at his stops. The solution is simple. They can certainly adopt that policy for future Rethuglican campaigns.

It is the absolute truth that they gave him a pass much too often, especially with all the egregious lies he told. There were those in the media who wanted him to win, and that probably played a big role in why he got so much leeway. I firmly believe that people reveal who they really are in the process of a long, arduous campaign. Regardless of whether Willard Romney ever releases information about his tax-paying history, he revealed more than enough about himself to show what an unmitigated disaster he would have been as president.

These news corporations might have been able to save money by sharing the costs of chartering a plane and bus(es) for their employees and by hiring a catering company to provide their meals at Romney’s different campaign stops/events. For $812, my little chihuahua and I could eat well for two months! I could even include several meals with T-bone steaks as a centerpiece for this amount of money, and my baby Winston could have all of the chicken (his favorite food) he could eat. I am so glad that since the election ended, information is emerging that is showing how “unfiscally conservative” Romney really is. I think that when some people are used to spending insane amounts of money for certain things because money isn’t an issue, the need to be frugal never enters their minds.

While Romney may be a good husband and father, he has done plenty in his life as a poltician and businessman that simply doesn’t pass the smell test. Just ask the good people of Massachusetts about their opinion of him. As their governor, he incurred their lasting distaste because of all the things he did. He didn’t run for re-election there because after one term, he knew he would lose. Ask the former workers of all the companies and and his buddies bankrupted yet profited from. He threw these former employees under the bus by firing them and outsourcing their jobs to other countries. In one case this year, there were workers of one such company who pleaded to him to help them keep their jobs. His response was to lock his door and call the police on them. Then on top of it all, he told a series of easily disproven lies during the course of the presidential campaign. I find it funny that his defenders don’t acknowledge that many Republicans didn’t even like him and only tolerated him just because they thought he could beat the president. After he lost, they kicked HIM to the curb.

I was under the impression that Romney (actually Bain Capital) only liquidated companies or industries that were already “in the toilet”… In other words, Romney’s actions only decreased the time before a business would have totally failed anyway… The same results for the workers who were ultimately displaced would more than likely just have happened later in time… Under certain circumstances, alternate methods were used to “save” a business, if that could be done.

I can’t imagine what it must be like to be so deeply immersed in denial about the well-known facts concerning Willard Romney’s character that made him such a poor choice as a presidential candidate. Not only did the greater number of Americans who voted against him than for him see these character flaws, but so did people around the world, especially in Europe. Since the USA is a leader on the world stage, it matters greatly how our president is perceived. He provided the very ammunition that led to his spectacular defeat, and hopefully, he won’t run a third time. As I’ve said before, he was only tolerated by the GOP base. During the nomination process, they tried to get anyone but him as their nominee because they didn’t think he was far enough to the right. The GOP establishment wanted him because they thought he would have greater appeal to the general voters. He eventually tried to tack to the center, but by then it was too late. In any case, he’s not hurting and still has everything he had before he even thought about running. I don’t wish him any harm, but am glad he’s not president.

you are probably right …why would Obama bite the hand that feeds him by billing the media ? …and why don’t we know if Obama billed the press ? is that record sealed as well ?

I don’t get the problem.
Throughout the entire campaign, the media was “pushing” for free market capitalism. Also, Mitt Romney has demonstrated that his modus operandi is to maximize profits. So why would the media by surprised that they participated in Free Market Capitalism with Mitt Romney?

I cant believe so many people believe everything they read without proof. If I believed everything they wrote in D.C. I would be as screwed up as the rest of them I moved away from…..Get proof on what you think and your mind will work like it should…

I must say I am impress by the speed and tenacious of the romney supporters coming on this site to defend their mittens. They truly deserve our respect. Now if they could only figure out this intertube thingy to actually produce enthusiasm and votes for romney.Face it, you all a day late and a dollar short.Say what,Oh romney took your dollar?Sucks being you huh.

Except they didnt defend Rpmney. All they did was accuse Obama. Virtually none of them had anything to say about Romney. Romney overcharging the press went right to Obama’s vacation. Typical

What is there to defend? The sources cited in the article are a letter written by the journalists at some news agencies. Yet no proof is presented. Again what should be said to an article so horribly written it assumes guilt without evidence. The left is so hypocritical it’s funny. Anne Romney wore an expensive outfit and it was her being out of touch. Michelle Obama wore a 10,000 dress to the DNC and it was high fashion. Look at Romney’s background. The left painted him as a spoiled rich kid. Obama goes to the wealthiest private school in Hawaii as a child but to Democrats claim he came from nothing. The fact there is no evidence to analyze speaks volumes. Just like when you cheer Obamas job record but don’t analyze the other economic factors such as the labor force participation rate and population growth rate. Democrats don’t seem to realize Job growth is anemic and Unemployment won’t go below 7% maybe until late 2014(check fed forecasts if you don’t believe me). This article shows the same myopic thinking that runs the democratic party. Short sighted tunnel vision with no analysis. There is a reason the recovery is still stagnating in its 5th year and that narrow minded thinking got us there.

Why aren’t the press complaining about Obama admin. overcharging the American people for the things they do.
Why are the press jumping on Romney for these issues. He, like most candidates, probably don’t have any idea what goes on the campaign trail. They are too wrapped up in campaigning and that is why they have managers to deal with these type of things.
The press should concentrate more on good report. Apparently there isn’t anything else worth reporting on or there are so many reporters that there isn’t anythings else for them to do.

Well Harry, you will remember that Romney took Direct control of his campaign
Your first charge has no content.
This story is not the only thing the press reported on.

Hey, all you Rethuglican trolls who are disliking all of the comments that make sense: You people all proclaim your desire to return to our Constitutional values, yet you do everything you can to inhibit free expression in a forum like this. Do you pick and choose the Constitutional values that you protect?

We understand your shame and voting for Romney. But if you pay attention to the things that have come out since the election and just before you can redeem yourself. Romney wasn’t anything like you think he was

They would probably have a duck-dying fit if we went to their far-right forums and tried to shut THEM down. No matter how they try, living in the land of Denial about Willard Romney doesn’t serve them well. I wonder what they would say if it turns out he is being investigated for some of his financial shenanigans. I also wonder if they like the taste of the same egg on their faces that he got when he found out he was going to lose instead of winning like he was led to believe.

Well I in fact am PROUD that I voted for Romney! He is a good man and for the press to keep trying to kick the man while he is down, regardless of the fact that he donates millions to charities and Obama only a couple thousand…
Show him some respect at least! Regardless of what you try to make him out to be, he is a great man and is deserving of respect! People never seize to amaze me. Hateful comments and hatred toward a man they don’t even know and haven’t bothered to really look in to.

You might want to look into those donations. They went to his church and they werent really donations. He was using his church as a tax exemption and taking the money back out when he needed it.
Romney is not the person you think he is

Paul Ryan helped author the person hood bills that would’ve taken your birth control away from you, and taken every right you have is a woman away from you. Romney signed on to that bill and said he would back it if made president.
Romney and Paul Ryan together would’ve taken more away from you than any group of residents you could ever imagine. Neither one of them are nice people
