Mitch McConnell Threatens to Kill Unemployment Benefits for 2 Million Unless He Gets Spending Cuts
Sen. Mitch McConnell has returned from Christmas, and is threatening to kill unemployment insurance for 2 million Americans unless he gets spending cuts.
The AP reported, “For the Senate to act would require a commitment from McConnell not to demand a 60-vote margin to consider the legislation on the Senate floor. McConnell’s office says it’s too early to make such an assessment because Obama’s plan is unclear on whether extended benefits for the unemployed would be paid for with cuts in other programs or on how it would deal with an expiring estate tax, among other issues.”
Through their own behavior, Republicans are revealing that their concern over the fiscal cliff is a total sham. Every year since 2010 midterm elections, congressional Republicans have demanded spending cuts in exchange for any unemployment benefits extension. At every opportunity, House and Senate Republicans threaten the economic survival of the unemployed. The fact that they have failed has not stopped Mitch McConnell from continuing to make unreasonable demands that are never going to happen.
Boehner and the House Republicans have lost their seat at the table, so it appears that they are trying to negotiate through McConnell.
McConnell’s demand has little to do with the deficit, and everything to do with ideology. Republicans view unemployment benefits as the cause of unemployment. People like McConnell believe that unemployment insurance takes away the incentive to work by making the unemployed lazy and dependent on government. (These people have obviously never tried to subsist on an unemployment check.)
Republicans believe that the unemployed would all run out and get jobs tomorrow if their earned benefit was taken away. It doesn’t matter to them that there beloved job creators long ago decided to increase their profits by not hiring, which means that there are more people looking for work than there are jobs available.
Sen. McConnell is trying to leverage the president’s concern for the unemployed into cuts for programs like food stamps, Medicare, and Medicaid.
The fiscal cliff has been and continues to be nothing more than a Republican construct that they intended to use a weapon against the social safety net.
We are about to go over the fiscal cliff because congressional Republicans are trying to play the same games that they have been playing for the last few years. Republicans are once again demonstrating that they don’t care about governing. They have no concern for the American people. The one and only priority for congressional Republicans is the imposition of their ideology through any means necessary.
This is the reason why Republicans created the fiscal cliff crisis, and it is also why their intention is to push the nation over the edge.

I feel it only just that those states that supported the Republican Party in the 2012 election should have the spending cuts directed squarely at them if a deal is not reached for the Fiscal Cliff. Someone must be held accountable for the Republican’s childish behavior of putting their own interests ahead of the country’s interests!!! The Republicans will be blamed for the fiscal cliff disaster, causing yet another recession within 4 years of the last one!!! Can you say “Debt Ceiling?!”
This has got to stop! For the future of the United States of America…this deal must be reached!!! Obama won the Election! Time to wake up Mr. McConnell, before you find yourself in the unemployment line!!I feel it only just that those states that supported the Republican Party in the 2012 election should have the spending cuts directed squarely at them if a deal is not reached for the Fiscal Cliff. every state in the union had people voting Republican. The GOP is trying to get Obama to make spending cuts which are necessary to begin lowering our debt. The reality is Obama doesn’t want to do lower our debt that is why he wants a law passed stating he can raise the debt ceiling anytime he wants. Cuts have to be made it is part of being a responsible adult. Obama refuses to pass a budget now going on the fifth year. The GOP has asked for spending cuts somewhere and Obama has refused time and time again. Obama wants to bankrupt this country and destroy the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Heck, he has already gotten a law passed stating law enforcement can look at our email whenever they want without a warrant. He also wants to take away our fundamental right to a lawyer and jury trial if we are “suspected” of being a terrorist and to hold those accused for an indefinite period of time. It’s called being an oppressor of human rights and breaking the Constitution and it’s getting worse every day. Wake up.

I hope there are some good Republican senators left who will do what is right and vote with Democratic senators to extend unemployment benefits. All they need to do is look to their constituency. I’m sure the TeaParty drubs will do nothing, but here’s hoping we have some moderate Republicans left in the Senate. Otherwise, when Harry changes the filibuster rules, maybe it can be passed then…retroactively. SMDH…McConnell needs to GO and soon. Evil bastard.

While everyone is flinging hate and insults back and forth at each other the Federal government (Both parties are equally guilty) quietly continues to spend our once mighty nation into utter oblivion. The Federal government is already required to spend a large portion of our nation’s GDP on nothing more than interest payments owed on the debt which, by all indications, will soon grow to dangerously high new levels. President Obama has indicated that he will not even sit down to discuss the “fiscal cliff” unless he is granted nearly unrestricted ability to raise the Federal debt limit. The fiscal cliff may well look like a fiscal anthill if the President is granted the power to create trillions of dollars of new debt without oversight. Be very careful what you wish for and please read the fine print folks because if the U.S. dollar loses “reserve currency” status; the past few years of economic pain might feel like a vacation at Disney World compared to what our nation will soon be facing.
Terri

“new debt”? The debt ceiling is about paying off the debt the Republicans created with the unpaid for wars and Medicare Part D and lowering taxes.
The President isn’t doing anything but paying off their debts. I guess Republicans are against paying debts off. Good to know.

These Senators are sitting in cushy jobs, over paid and very under worked but still they get a big salary, perks and everything else while most of the country is starving, homeless or both but unemployed and that causes the other things I listed. How do they figure unemployment keeps people from working. Have any of the bastar– on capital hill ever had to survive on unemployment or Social Security or even a real paycheck after taxes?
These freaks control things and they don’t care about the people or if they are on the street. They have had it far too easy for way too long and it is time for the people to stand up and show them we are the power and get everyone of them out of office.
What this country needs is honest people in office who will work for the country and the people and not for themselves. The Dems won’t work with the Reps and vice versa. They want to control everything and if they don’t like what one is doing they walk out. They take far too many days off or vacations but they don’t earn their money. Get rid of everyone of them and the people need to elect people who are hard working, honest and care what happens to this wonderful country, people who will work to make it like it was when our ancestors worked so hard to make it into the great country and it was until we got a bunch of liars and crooks in office and wanting their way or no way.
America is the best country in the world and we the people need to take it back and make it the greatest county in the world again.

How many of the people in Kentucky that will get their unemployment benefits cut off voted for this big pile of shit? I bet alot of them did. Open your eyes people, the Republican party is not your friend for 98% of the population. People should be smart enough to realize that these assholes are in it for themselves and their rich constituents. McConnell gets on and says the republicans have bent over backwards. What a joke he is, him and Boehner both. Speaking of bending over, thats what they want the poor and middle class to do so they can give it to ya in the ass. I have never in my life hated a bunch of people like I do the ones in Congress that have done nothing but filibuster and obstruct since President Obama has been in office.

I wrote a Book Called: The Party of Scrooge – History of American Politics because of the tactics used by the Republicans starting back in 2010 and continuing on since then. Blackmail and holding the American People Hostage to ram Austerity down our throats is what that Party now stands for. I am always asking this question to all my Republican friends: Name one thing the Republicans have done since 2000 that actually helps the working people of this country! Not a single thing would be the answer.

I cannot begin to say how disappointed I am with the so-called leadership of the GOP. They cannot disappear fast enough to suit me. Former Bush aide Mark McKinnon on the incredible shrinking Republican Party: “Increasingly, it is becoming clear that the party is against everything and for nothing.
“Nothing on taxes. Nothing on gun control. Nothing on climate change. Nothing on gay marriage. Nothing on immigration reform (or an incremental, piece-by-piece approach, which will result in nothing). It’s a very odd situation when the losing party is the party refusing to negotiate. It may be how you disrupt, but it is not how you govern, or how you ever hope to regain a majority.
“And so, we have a Republican Party today willing to eliminate any prospect for a decent future for anyone, including itself, if it cannot be a future that is 100 percent in accordance with its core beliefs and principles. That’s not governing. That’s just lobbing hand grenades. If you’re only standing on principle to appear taller, then you appear smaller. And the GOP is shrinking daily before our eyes.”

The biggest error in our Constitution is that impeachment can only be started by the House of Representatives. We need a citizen’s committee whose soul purpose is to investigate, and impeach members of Congress who are guilty of treason (signing pledges to anyone other than the American People), lack of moral character (I don’t drink, but get DWI; I believe in the sanctity of marriage, while I bed my secretary), and failure to do their job (as in not passing, or even voting on anything), or worst of all, wasting American Taxpayer money with frivolous bills. We need to enact a law that allows for this committee. After all, Congress has a Science Committee, with members that don’t even know how old the Earth is, and an Intelligence Committee (oxymoron), and even an Ethics Committee (Yeah, right!).

I think that a refusal to acknowledge the truth is a serious problem in our country at this time. It has led to our Congress being filled with self-serving individuals who use the common people to get elected, and then refuse to do anything for us. If a neighbor’s dog bites you on the ass, the first thing you’re going to do is blame his dog, not the dog from two streets over. The republicans are to blame for our dysfunctional government. The day that Barack Obama was inaugurated, Cantor, Gingrich, and other republicans were meeting to devise a way to block every effort he made to help our economy recover.
www.huffingtonpost.com/20...
Mitch McConnell said in 2010 that the republicans’ main goal over the next two years would be “to make Barack Obama a one-term president.” Anyone who knows these two pieces of information and doesn’t know who to blame is willfully and consciously choosing to ignore the truth.

It really bothers me to hear that “our leaders” can be so inconsiderate to people that have been effected by the economy. I am one who is receiving unemployment because the company i worked for downsized and got rid of my position. I have ALWAYS worked and NEVER have had to depend on the government for ANYTHING…I am a single parent of now 2 kids and when I only had my oldest, I had 2 jobs. I can not work 2 jobs now because I have a 16 month old that I have to make time for. I never thought it would be so hard to find a job since losing my other one. I have a good solid work history, but am finding that more and more jobs are requiring to have a degree and are not hiring based on experience. I am enrolled in school taking online classes for Health Care Administration and my only hope is that once I graduate that I will be able to find something in my field. In the meantime, my job search has included countless hours of submitting my resumes, cold calling, registering with agencies, registering with job search engines, and networking with friends and family…I have been told that I either I do not have enough experience or Overqualified… I was at my last job for almost 5 years AND have more than 10 years of customer service experience…some people feel that when someone is unemployed that they should be willing to accept ANY job, but I know what type of money that I have to coming into my home…I am a homeowner and have been since I was 18 so I am like many other American families that have real monthly expenses…I was denied food stamps which I have never had because I was told I was over the limit due to my unemployment…so yes i am very thankful to be able to receive unemployment during this hard time, but it is not everything that some may think because you are on a fixed income…Now i see how many seniors feel trying to live off their social security checks.

Even after the “shellacking” the GOP took in November, he and his fellow cretins are still trying to score political points at the expense of millions of Americans. Sen M. had better back off because cutting off unemployment bennifits will create a whole lot of angry and despirate people, and angry and desperate people who feel they would have nothing left to lose by blowing up his fucking home with him and his family inside, or just simply lying in wait in a strategic location to blow his head off.
Just saying… Won’t be the first time.
