A Deluded Mitt Romney Has No Idea He’s Losing This Election
In a CBS 60 Minutes interview with Scott Pelley, Mitt Romney denied that his campaign is in trouble. He seems to believe that if he keeps telling everyone that he’s tied with the President, it will be true. Pelley asked him about the secret video tape of his comments that 47% of Americans are victims who are dependent upon government, and Romney claimed that those comments were him, not his campaign.
Watch here:
Read an excerpt and weep:
Scott Pelley: You are slipping in the polls at this moment. A lot of Republicans are concerned about this campaign. You bill yourself as a turnaround artist. How are you going to turn this campaign around?
Mitt Romney: Well, actually, we’re tied in the polls. We’re all within the margin of error. We bounce aroun — week to week– day to day. There are some days we’re up. There are some days we’re down. We go forward with my message, that this is a time to reinvigorate the American economy, not by expanding government and raising taxes on people, but instead by making sure government encourages entrepreneurship and innovation and gets the private sector hiring again.
Scott Pelley: Governor, I appreciate your message very much. But that wasn’t precisely the question. You’re the CEO of this campaign. A lot of Republicans would like to know, a lot of your donors would like to know, how do you turn this thing around? You’ve got a little more than six weeks. What do you do?
Mitt Romney: Well, it doesn’t need a turnaround. We’ve got a campaign which is tied with an incumbent president to the United States.
Scott Pelley: Well– as you know, a lot of people were concerned about the video of the fundraiser in which you talked about the 47 percent of the American people who don’t pay taxes. Peggy Noonan, a very well-known conservative columnist, said that it was an example of this campaign being incompetent. And I wonder if any of that criticism gets through to you and whether you’re concerned about it at all, whether–
Mitt Romney: Well, that’s not–
Scott Pelley: –the concerns of Republicans–
Mitt Romney: That’s not…that’s not the campaign. That was me, right? I– that’s not a campaign.
Scott Pelley: You are the campaign–
Mitt Romney: I’ve got a very effective campaign. It’s doing a very good job. But not everything I say is elegant. And I want to make it very clear, I want to help 100 percent of the American people.
Not only does Romney deny that he’s “slipping” in the polls right now, but he now thinks he can sell that his campaign that is selling him as a CEO turnaround Mr. Fix It is not about him.
It sorta makes you long for Sarah Palin.
Mitt Romney is, in fact, trailing in national polls as well as in swing states. Romney is also losing his home states right now by wide margins, and losing his Vice Presidential candidate’s home state. This is not a good thing, as no candidate since 1916 has won the White House while losing their home state.
Congressional Republicans and Republican Governors are running away from Romney, blaming him for their falling poll numbers. The campaign sent Paul Ryan out to soothe the fears of Republicans yesterday, and he told them that out on the trail, the “energy” was high. Indeed it was, as Ryan was booed today at his AARP speech, but I doubt this is the kind of energy he meant.
The Romney campaign also released his 2011 tax returns today, and he included a top sheet of a “summary” of his tax returns for previous years, which has caused political brains to ask “is this a joke”? Had Romney not deferred his deductions, his rate could have been as low as 9.6%, making him one of the 47% that he loathes, but no matter — Romney can always amend his returns after the election and get a big check from Uncle Sam like a good conservative.
No, indeed, Romney isn’t kidding. This is Romney’s idea of an “effective” campaign. If Mitt Romney really believes that, he has no business billing himself as a “turnaround” artist, let alone a good manager. Denial has never been high on the list of attributes for successful business owners.
This announcement that his campaign is fine is as deluded as McCain’s “the fundamentals of the economy are fine” moment. How can someone be running for the leader of the free world and yet be so unwilling to deal with reality? Republicans are wishing Romney could sell Romney off and “turnaround” the Romney campaign sans Romney.

And I suppose when Obama mops the floor with this slimy charlatan at the first debate, the Romney spin wil be that he ‘won,’ and that half the people would never vote for him anyway, and Jim Lehrer is really for Obama, and those gotcha questions about foreign policy didn’t deserve an answer because his foreign policy will be far better than ‘white flag’ Obama’s and we will be privy to it after we elect him. This is going to get uglier, isn’t it?

I think it will get more surreal. There may be elements of additional ugly kicking in, but he’s a sociopath. (I don’t mean that in the snarky, pop culture insult way. He’s a for-real sociopath, full-stop. They’re also known as ‘pathological narcissists’ for reasons Mitt Romney has now made obvious.) As a sociopath, he has a grandiose image of himself as a superior human being. He will continue to believe he is winning and that he will win, and that will just become more and more surreal for the rest of us as the election approaches.

THAT is it in a nutshell: the American people are refusing to be bought. The arrogant liar Romney cant win any other way because he is so intensely and widely disliked; surely he is the ultimate error of the GOP–hopefully the one that causes their demise.

Vic, you hit the nail on the head. Virtually everything he has done has been so staged and scripted by study and focus groups, coming from a campaign that is going to rack up $1 billion or more, and Romney is looking like he wants to fail this campaign. Paul Ryan is around to shore up a base of voters that were going to vote for them anyways, but the rest of America is smelling BS, and with Ryan throwing out these extreme policies that scare the country. It is great for one reason. Americans can’t be bought.

Rocky, I don’t think Romney wants to buy the election, he thinks, that we are lucky to have him as a candidate, and he thinks he’s doing us a favor by running. This campaign and election is merely a nuisance to him and his plans to rule America, he probably feels that we should be paying him for his campaign appearances and speeches. This man is arrogant and entitled, and does not even know, people don’t like him, Period.

Romney is a CEO hatchet man as far I am concerned. Ice water runs through his veins when it comes to his “ventures”. Not the CEO that has sleepless nights when he closes plants, he has already told us, he likes to fire those not doing their jobs. And OUR JOB American people is to cough up more taxes so the 1% and Big Corporations don’t. He has already dismissed the 47%, but for years he has been dismissing all of the 99% for what? Money??? Money??? Yes the rich of today are not the rich of yesterday, no morals. They think they are “ENTITLED” and are above reproach.
So Mitt will never concede his campaign is failure, beyond, his comprehension that the workers are talking back. Let’s keep talking folks, and lets get out and vote, and vote out the lousy Congressional GOP while we are at it.
Its OUR Nation, not the 1%’s, not Grover Norquist’s or the Koch Bros, no its ours.
Lets keep it. Its not for Sale.

Willard isn’t the only one who’s deluded. A few pundits, as well as a buttload of his supporters, are just as deluded. Go to his FB page and you’ll find at least one, if not more, person tell you they’re tied or Willard’s ahead by 2-3 points! And bless their pea-pickin’ hearts, they really believe it….well, they just have to!
They just cannot come to mental grips with the fact that there is no rebooting. You can’t make him into something he’s not. You can’t expect him to act like someone he isn’t. You can’t force him to become warm and fuzzy, or to know the first thing about foreign policy, or to suddenly learn empathy and compassion, or to get a handle on the diversity of this country outside his wealthy white-people bubble. You can’t surgically insert a social filter in his fat mouth.
He’s dead, Jim.

I’ve also gotten quite the kick out of people trying to pass off any poll that has Obama winning as “liberal” or that Nate Silver “doesn’t know what he’s talking about”. I wish I knew how it feels to live in such a fantasy world. It must be magical and terrifying all at the same time.

Reynardine…something that still must be considered is that the GOP has won two out of the last three elections rather unusually, with the last one (2004) leaving myriad questions about voting machine tampering. I fear that if the right-wing media is able to make it appear as though the race is remaining tight, if romney pulls a “come from behind” victory on election night, no one will bother to check for voting machine tampering.

Oy! Reynardine, you bring up a terrifying point. GWB was never voted for by a majority of Americans either – and in fact both times he actually lost the electoral vote when the irregularities were brought to light – but he still got in thanks to the GOP-designed SCOTUS. It would be a horrible day for America if such a treasonous thing were to happen again but when you mentioned there’s no way a majority will vote for Mittens – well that doesn’t mean he won’t end up in the White House. We need to make sure it’s an unriggable landslide for Obama.

I discovered today why some republicans are still saying that Romney is either tied or leading PBO. Rachel Maddow explained it on her program tonight. She said that the difference in the polls that are showing the president ahead vs those showing Romney ahead has to do with whom they’re calling. She went on to say that the polls showing Romney tied or ahead of the president call only people with landlines, whereas, those showing PBO ahead of Romney, include landlines and cell phone users. She also mentioned that mainly older people still use landlines exclusively, and they skew toward Romney. I’ll go with the polls that include both landlines and cell phone users because I believe the results are more accurate.
I find it amazing that in this interview, Romney distances himself from his own campaign on the 47% comment that HE made. He really didn’t want to answer the question, but Scott Pelley forced him to, and the result was pure gibberish. What person in his/her right mind would try to make a distinction between him/herself and his/her campaign? He must be thinking that we’ll look at what he said and say, Oh, Romney said that, it isn’t related to the Romney campaign! The stress of campaigning must really be taking a toll on him.

90% of his problem is he is just not used to having people tell him NO! And he is not used to having to explain himself or what he is doing to anyone!
I guess too bad for him, because the People of the United States, are going to expect answers if he is elected. And I would suspect that if elected, he will ony anwer to the top 10% and will have very little to say to the lesser 90%. Perhaps nothing at all to the 47% of freeloaders in the Country! Imagine that!
He will not last long if elected!

I think Romney thought he would be a shoo in. I guess all those years firing Americans and shipping their jobs overseas blinded him to the real America. His rich, influential buddies think he’s a genius and have crowned him ‘the one’ so he thought putting his name forward was all that it would take. He’s now having a rude awakening, realising that most Americans don’t view him the same way his friends and family view him. At this late date in the campaign, his distractors, Republicans all can’t understand why he’s not out on the campaign trail instead of attending fundraisers, but Romney thinks money from his rich benefactors will automatically get him in the WH. The man is deluded.

anyone notice how republicans frequently use the rasmussen poll and real clear politics average as talking points to say romney is ahead of or tied with president obama?; but the don’t mention that president obama is ahead in the electoral votes; and according to rcp “toss up states”, romney needs 79 out of 100 to reach 270; president obama only needs 23 out of 100 to reach 270; hmm, i think i’d rather be in president obama’s shoes in this one;

We, in Europe, watch with mounting fear the way some the American media, some Polititians and commentators mangle the truth or merely repeat endless lies. I was in the States when the ” nappy headed ho’s ” remark was made and that guy vanished within days, yet that odious pile of toad excrement Limbaugh can lie, insult and rant endlessly. Fox news seems to be a total stranger to the truth and their commentators seem to be the worst kind of racists, they have power without responsibility. You see, the thing that really scares us is that we still remember a party of Racist Liars who swept to power on the back of twisted truth, pure racial hatred and the removal of votes from their opponents. The Nazis knew that if they repeated a lie often enough people would eventually shrug and vote as they were told. Even Mugabe, the Monster of Zimbabwe, told GWB not to criticize the elections in Africa….a proud moment for the Leader of The West ! Any political that celebrates the membership of Bush, Palin, Rmoney and the evil Ryan scares the white feathers out of me, your Founding Fathers must be revolving in their graves……..Good luck, America.

Thank you David, I wish you would send this message into many American newspapers. I agree with you and it is hard for me as American to believe that there are so many here in this country that are so deluded and rely upon the words from the likes of Rush and Fox and believe it to be true. The “money machines” have infiltrated those weak minded right wing extremist through the pulpit, through the media and then by buying and controlling our politicians. It is a sad, scary state of affairs.
Imagine such contention over such basic needs as providing access to health care for everyone? Who would think there would be so much hatred over this?
We need to get the money out of political races, we need for the Republican party to implode, and we need to do a better job of educating Americans because so many of the intellect of characters from a reality show.

Willard Romney may not be the candidate that many Republicans wanted, but he is most certainly the one they deserve. For years, they have been appealing to fear, hatred, ignorance, and bigotry, and as a result, all of their presidential candidates in recent times have been badly flawed. In this ethically challenged, ruthless, and ambitious robot, they are reaping what they have sown. He is every bit as delusional as they are, because he is in denial of his painfully obvious flaws both as a candidate and as a man.

Actually, Romney has at least five “home” states. Michigan, where he was born and his Dad was Governor; Massachusetts, where he was elected Governor even though he did not actually live there; California, where he has his largest mansion (near La Jolla); Utah, where he owns a ski lodge and the church in which he is a Bishop is based; and New Hampshire, where he also owns a home. Out of all of those, he should win Utah, unless he disses the LDS between now and November 6. And with him, anything is possible.

I just happen to be reading a Morman blog post at the same time reading this article and I believe I have nailed it. I am an Independent voter (Mitt ROBme lost my vote months ago) but wanted to do some research on the Morman church. Many will find this exerpt very interesting (the second sentence in particular).
14 Fundamental Articles or Beliefs of Mormans (#4):
Truth is determined by feelings
“We believe we know the truth by our feelings. We do not rely on and we will disregard any facts that contradict what our feelings tell us is true. If something feels bad, like someone telling us that Joseph Smith was a fraud, then we know that Smith must of been a prophet since falsehoods create bad feelings and it feels bad when someone tells us that we have been duped. In other words, if we get a bad feeling, we are hearing bad things which must be lies. We feel good when we read the Book of Mormon, therefore it is true. Archeology, genetics, science, metallurgy, agriculture and animal studies are irrelevant since our feelings tell us it is a true book revealed by God. This good feeling applies to all aspects of our lives. We determine if we should do something or know the truth of something if we have prayed about it and have a good feeling about it.”
I COULDN’T MAKE THIS STUFF UP IF I WANTED. This was on a Morman blog “Recovery from Mormonism”
This is why Mitt ROBme see nothing wrong with flip-floping on issues. Many articles have been written on this matter to further understand that because the Morman Church has changed its position on many “truths” “beliefs” and “laws” there is no reason why Mitt has to stand behind ANYTHING.

mitt romney knows he’s going to lose. he’s known since ’09. romney and obama are backed by the same people. there’s no such thing as 2 parties. romney is the fall guy, the patsy, the dummy candidate propped up by goldman sachs to hand obama a 2nd term. he was never in the race to win. only ron paul would have beaten obama. he was the one who beat obama in key swing states, polled highest among independents and beat obama outright in multiple polls. not mitt romney. we told you this. anyway, votes don’t count. the election is 100% rigged. you will be getting obama again. enjoy suckers!

@lips. The only point you are right about is the worlds power brokers, ie: trilateral comission, Rothchilds, Rockefellers, and others control who you vote for through banks in presidential elections or as you called it “rigged”… however, loony Ron Paul never stood a chance.. he talks a good game but falls outside of mainstream american views… that been said, Willard will be sent packing back to where ever and fade into history, obama will prevail and have a second term fulfilling his appointment with Americas destiny….

Mittens is losing his home state?
I wasn’t aware that the Cayman Islands was part of the United States.
And Jay..if you think Ron Paul is the new messiah of the GOP then you are in dire need of a reality check. Ron Paul is no libertarian and the libertarians are simply not right.
Funny..where were the libertarians when the Republicans started the wars and where were they when the GOP created the patriot act? And I sure as hell don’t remember the libertarians protesting when Bush bailed out Wall Street.
So I find it real curious that the supposed libertarians have allied themselves with the GOP..the party that did all those things. That makes Ron Paul and his fellow libertarians nothing but fakes and charlatans.
You and your fellow libertarians are part of the party that is eroding our civil liberties…that party being the GOP.
And if you think the GOP has changed its spots and become the party of libertarians then you are deluding yourself.
