Romney Rolls Out New Ad Doubling Down on Pants on Fire Lie About Navy
By: Sarah JonesOct. 23rd, 2012more from Sarah Jones
In Mitt Romney’s new ad, “Highest Responsibility,” he doubles down on the way out of date comments he made in Monday night’s debate that opened the door for Obama’s now trending “we also have fewer horses and bayonets” retort.
Despite the fact that Politifact gave Romney’s claim a pants on fire rating way back in January and Factcheck said it’s not true (in fact, we have more ships now than we did in Bush’s last four years), Romney’s ad claims “Despite what President Obama says, our Navy is smaller now than at any time since 1917. It’s the highest responsibility of the President of the United States to maintain the safety of the American people. Mitt Romney will not make our future less certain by cutting our military.”
Watch Romney’s ad here:
Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus said, “(t)he ships we have today are far more capable than any ships we’ve ever had, and comparing them to the old fleet in terms of numbers is sort of like comparing iPhones to the telegraph.”
The President Obama said in Monday’s debate, “Governor Romney hasn’t spent enough time looking at how our military works.”
Here’s what the President said in the debate:
TRANSCRIPT
PRESIDENT OBAMA: “The budget we’re talking about is not reducing our military spending, it’s maintaining it, but I think Governor Romney hasn’t spent enough time looking at how our military works.
“You mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets because the nature of our military has changed. We have these things called aircraft carriers where planes land on them, we have these ships that go under water, nuclear submarines, and so the question is not a game of battleship where we’re counting ships, it’s what are our capabilities.
“And so when I sit down with the Secretary of the Navy and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, we determine how are we going to be best able to meet all of our defense needs in a way that also keeps faith in our troops that also makes sure that our veterans have the kind of support that they need when they come home, and that is not reflected in the kind of budget that you’re putting forward because it just doesn’t work. We visited the web site quite a bit, and it still doesn’t work.”
Romney’s claims about the Navy were rated pants on fire by Politifact in January of this year:
“In recent years, the number of Navy and Air Force assets has sunk to levels not seen in decades, although the number of ships has risen slightly under Obama. However, a wide range of experts told us it’s wrong to assume that a decline in the number of ships or aircraft automatically means a weaker military… Thanks to the development of everything from nuclear weapons to drones, comparing today’s military to that of 60 to 100 years ago presents an egregious comparison of apples and oranges. Today’s military and political leaders face real challenges in determining the right mix of assets to deal with current and future threats, but Romney’s glib suggestion that today’s military posture is in any way similar to that of its predecessors in 1917 or 1947 is preposterous… Pants on Fire.” [Tampa Bay Times, Politifact, 1/18/12]
Factcheck also ruled Romney’s claim “not true” in January, plenty of time for even the Romney campaign to get the telegraph that indeed, they are wrong. “Romney claimed that “our Navy is now smaller than any time since 1917.” That’s not true — at least as measured by the number of active-duty ships. There are more Navy ships now than during the last four years of George W. Bush’s presidency.”
The Romney campaign will not be dictated to by fact checkers. So onward they fight the battles of yesteryear, pants on fire, bayonets in hand.
Take it from Mitt Romney, a foreign policy novice with no experience in counterterrorism or combat, if you want to be safe against Iran’s nuclear capabilities, base your counterterrorism and defense strategies on the way things were 60-100 years ago.
When busted, down down.
Update: As with all things Romney, it appears that there might be a monetary motive in his seeming inability to keep history straight.

Romney’s best game plan is when caught in a lie or factual error TELL IT BIGGER AND MORE OFTEN.
Any parent can tell you how well restating directives MORE LOUDLY AND MORE OFTEN works with their kids.
Not.

Oh, I’m Captain Jinx of the Horse Marines
And when I talk, I’m full of beans
I’ve been that way since in my teens
And I stayed out of the Army!
I teach my horses how to dance
How to dance, how to dance
And I wear magic underpants
Which kept me out of the Army!
(Peace, Ms. Nofziger. I know that’s not the version you taught us in fifth grade)

Ann Romney has expressed her concern for Mitt’s ‘mental well being’ not once but twice.
For the spouse of someone who has campaigned for for various elected offices over a span of a number of years — a spouse to verbalize those words within interviews and the campaign — that raises huge red flags that people should take notice of.

Ann Romney has expressed her concern for Mitt’s ‘mental well being’ not once but twice.
Which is why I say that, if she’s that concerned, the best way to allay her fears is to keep Willard as FAR from the White House as possible . . .

Yes, one of Romney’s big donors is in the ship building business!
The idiot Trump who has been saying he has some devastating information about Obama that he will release tomorrow – it is generally thought he is going to say Barrack and Michelle once thought of divorcing and he has then papers to prove it. I guess the birth certificate bomb did not work out. I never heard him saying a word when McCain was running
for president, and he left his wife when she was sick and while he was having an affair!

If your guess is correct, I would think that far from sinking his campaign as Trump claims it will, the reaction of most Americans to documentation that the Obamas’ marriage went through some tough times would be, so?
I don’t think the Obamas have ever claimed to have had a perfect marriage, unmarred by any disagreements. In fact, I think I remember them once talking about a very tough point in their marriage. They worked through it, as do many people.
So I am hoping you are right! This idea seems harmless, unless I am missing something.

And if so — big f*cking WHOOP.
So the Obamas considered divorcing but didn’t — hell, let’s compare that to the number of repubs with multiple divorces . . . including The Combover himself . . .

I bet Trump is making it up again. We’re so close to the election that he figures he wouldn’t have to produce a single authentic document, just make a lot of noise about how he’ll soon prove there is one.

Trump…Yes. I read same tonight on The Daily Beast. They have posted their take on what Trump has up his sleeve.
I guess when Obama called out Trump at the Press’ Annual Dinner, little ol’ rich boy, El Trumpo, just had to get even with the president. Trump is such a goofball, like Romney, his latest bud.
What in the world!
This new is nothing new that Michele O did not want Obama to run for office of the Presidency. Yes. we have heard about their quarrels, that had spats, etc. This is no big deal, but Trump, like Sheriff Joe Arpio/Phoenix, will once again deliver a big dud of a story in the media tomorrow.
Big deal. NOT

J — Is it possible you mixed up McCain and Newt Gingrich? Newt’s on his 3rd or 4th marriage now, but he did leave his 2nd wife (I think) while she was in the hospital for cancer treatment for what became his next wife.

McCain also left his wife who was in the hospital recovering from a car accident I believe. Trump has been married how many times? Not one to throw stones if this is it! Just another distraction so some of the people will forget about how bad mittens did in last night’s debate. Everyone, vote early if your state allows it!!!

Right. McCain left his first wife, Carol, as she became disfigured from the car accident.
He had already met his Cindy from Arizona , had fallen in love with her then told wife Carol that he wanted the divorce. McCain and wife Carol left the marriage/ divorce amicably.
Trump is on his third marriage. Yikes.

The fact that Mitt Romney is acting like the most important investment the US can make is with our Navy shows how totally unfit he is to be President. It also shows that he isn’t a fiscal conservative. Fiscal conservatives don’t spend money on things people don’t want or need. And we know the military has said they don’t need or want these toys from Mitt. They have said they are doing just fine without them.

I think the most frightening thing about this whole ad is not the fact about the number of ships, but the blatant lie that Obama is proposing 1 trillion dollars in military spending. The only way that the 1 trillion dollar cut would take effect is if the sequester happens and mandatory cuts are made. Sorry Mitt, this would happen to you as well if the mandatory sequester comes to fruition.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has vowed to boost the size of the Navy by roughly 15 percent as part of a broader defense buildup. “Our Navy is smaller now than at any time since 1917,” he complained in Monday night’s debate. “That’s unacceptable to me.”
But for one of Romney’s most important advisers on Navy issues, a man who oversaw a massive naval expansion for Pres. Ronald Reagan, there’s more at stake than U.S. national security. John Lehman, an investment banker and former secretary of the Navy, has strong and complex personal financial ties to the naval shipbuilding industry. He has profited hugely from the Navy’s slow growth in recent years — raising the prospect that he could make even more if Romney takes his advice on expanding the fleet.
That doesn’t mean that a bigger or better Navy is necessarily a bad idea. But it does complicate Romney’s claim that a larger Navy would merely be “matched to the interests we need to protect.” A bigger maritime force has the possibility of personally enriching one of the candidate’s top advisers. In fact, it already has.

I don’t know anyone in the world who could vote for the Chief architect of outsourcing,Romnesia, while at Bain & even today he still gets yearly retirement checks from Bain- Bain closes the Freeport plant in Illinois soon and made the American workers train the Chinese workers that will have their jobs.
Who can vote for someone who’s cronies & his sons own voting machines in 5 states? Who can vote for anyone who has 17 of 24 Bushwacked appointees on his team? Who can vote for a flip flopper, etch a sketcher & a sit & spinner? Who can vote for someone who will take us backwards instead of forward? Plus in the debate last 10/22/12 Romney agreed with Obama 13 times. A Hugfest & if they had 13 more minutes, Romney would of endorsed Obama.lol
