Mitt Romney is the Tip of the Republican Religious Extremist Spear
It is always fascinating that a country responsible for stunning technological advancements, groundbreaking scientific research, and engineering marvels is painfully slow to change on social issues. American conservatism at one time preferred gradual to abrupt change and believed defending civilization from modernistic culture was crucial to social stability. America has made gradual social changes over the past 50 years, and conservatives fought to preserve the status quo every inch of the way, but since 2009, a new form of conservatism is threatening to take this country to late-17th Century America where the rule of law is the Christian religion and social progress is eradicated making the concept of maintaining tradition highly desirable. There have always been crackpots and religious fanatics preaching the virtues of biblical rule, but between growing numbers of Christian conservatives in Congress, and the Republican presidential ticket, Americans are precariously close to living under scriptural edict that will make the Taliban look tame.
Religious extremists directing Republicans have sought to impose their worldview on all Americans and are a stark reminder of the need to enforce the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause which keeps religious groups from controlling the government. A perennial example in Congress is Louis Gohmert who recently said slavery was an ugly moment in the nation’s history, but the situation now is even worse. Gohmert said America was coming to the “end of its existence” as evidenced by leaders and citizens neglecting to remain true to biblical teachings, and that the situation is worse because “the entire nation is far away from God’s teaching and so openly rebelling, even from the top, against God’s teachings in the Bible.” Gohmert is an extreme example, but he is not far removed from Willard Romney and Paul Ryan’s vision of America under a bible-inspired set of rules dictating how Americans conduct their personal lives.
Both Romney and Ryan signed the National Organization of Marriage (NOM) pledge agreeing if they reach the White House, they will appoint U.S. Supreme Court and federal bench judges and an attorney general who reject the idea the Founding Fathers inserted a right to gay marriage into the Constitution. They will also defend the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) vigorously in court, and establish a presidential commission on religious liberty to investigate reports of Americans who have been harassed or threatened for exercising civil rights to organize, to speak, to donate or to vote for marriage and to propose new protections. Although every part of the NOM pledge is offensive on its face, it is the last section that portends danger for any American who supports same-sex marriage, because if there is one thing Christian conservatives and Republicans have made an issue of, it is their claim of persecution when they are prevented from exercising their religious liberty to impose bible edicts on the rest of the population. Don’t believe it?
In August, the Family Research Council and Liberty Institute released a joint report entitled “The Survey on Religious Hostility in America” which is a “collection of more than 600 cases, detailing religious bigotry throughout America.” Extremist Christian David Barton commented on the alleged persecution of Christians saying People For the American Way (PFAW) and other groups have created a “toxic” and “hostile” environment where public officials are pressured into persecuting Christians. Translation; the Constitution prohibits Christians from imposing their beliefs on the government and rest of the population. A Romney presidency that appoints a commission to investigate and regulate so-called “persecutors” will become a 21st Century American Inquisition to ferret out and punish same-sex marriage supporters.
The gay community faces more trouble if Romney appoints federal judges and Supreme Court justices who agree with current Justice Antonin Scalia who recently said, “outlawing homosexual sodomy is a no-brainer.” Scalia wrote that nowhere in the Constitution does it say “homosexual sodomy is a ‘fundamental right, and that Americans do not want persons who openly engage in homosexual conduct as partners in their business, scoutmasters, teachers, or boarders in their home. They are protecting themselves and their families from a lifestyle they believe to be immoral and destructive.” This attitude falls directly in line with Romney’s pledge to propose a constitutional amendment defining marriage according to Christian tradition and vigorously defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Interestingly, on Thursday the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals became the second federal appeals court to strike down DOMA as an unconstitutional violation of equal protection. However, with Christian bible dogmata replacing the Constitution, the concept of equal protection will be a distant memory.
Women should be most frightened of Romney and Ryan’s religious fundamentalism that abhors a woman’s right to choose their own reproductive health. Romney said he strongly supported “personhood” measures since they were introduced several years ago, and he supports a constitutional amendment that would establish the definition of life at conception. His position has been consistent, clear, and far outside the mainstream as well as a serious threat to women’s health. Romney’s running mate, Paul Ryan, cosponsored the bill, with Todd Akin, that presented America the despicable term “forcible rape.” Ryan and Akin also cosponsored a federal personhood bill, the Sanctity of Human Life Act, that declares a fertilized egg is entitled to the exact same legal rights as an adult human being. If Ryan’s bill became law, the likely effect would be to treat killing a fertilized egg as the same thing as homicide. Subsequently, nearly all forms of contraception would become murder weapons and the law would effectively ban contraception in the United States.
It would be a tragic mistake for any woman, or man for that matter, to think if Romney and Ryan were elected they would tack to the center and relax their religious tendencies to impose biblical dogma on the nation. Romney and Ryan have been consistent in opposing abortion in any situation as cited in a disturbing instance of Romney pressuring a Mormon woman to have a baby despite a life threatening condition where both doctors, and even the Mormon Stake President, recommended an abortion. The woman’s father said Romney pressured them mercilessly and that he had “never been so upset about anything in my life; Romney is an authoritative fellow who thinks he is in charge of the world.” It is important to remember that Romney’s religion dictates that if he wins the White House, he will be in charge of the world and one of his duties is imposing his religious beliefs on the American people; especially women.
This election is crucial in many respects, but none as important as maintaining the separation of church and state. With a growing number of legislators subscribing to the Christian bible as rule of law mindset, and a presidential ticket replete with hardline religious fanatics who signed a solemn pledge to enforce biblical ideology on all Americans, there is no demographic that will be safe; especially women and gays. It is one thing for conservatives and their Christian fanatics to prefer gradual change and maintain traditions, but this new conservative is harkening back to the pre-Constitution era more in line with the Salem witch trials of 1692 than 21st Century America.
The religious right, Dominionists, and theocracy proponents pose a clear and present danger to all Americans regardless of their religious persuasion. There are historical instances of entire populations being caught up in religious-like frenzy and sweeping away all those who stand opposed, and it is certain that in pre-Nazi Germany, good German people had no more reason to assist in the slaughter of six million Jews than they would exterminate their own children, but when incited to action borne of fear-mongering and state-sponsored hate, there are no groups that can remain safe. America is nearing that point, and Republicans have fallen in line with extremist Christian fanatics whose sole intent is replacing the Constitution with the Christian bible, and America’s worst nightmare is a Romney presidency bolstered by conservative Christians in Congress and a bible-based Supreme Court that outlaws homosexuality, contraception, abortion, and gives full Constitutional rights to a single-celled organism. America does change slowly, but a Republican victory in November will bring a rapid change taking America into Dark Ages when there was no Constitution, no equal rights, and the bible’s Old Testament was the law of the land.

On the one hand, I can hardly wait for this election to be over; on the other hand, I realize that the day after the election, I may ardently wish it were the day before.

The major reason the religious fundamentalist have so much control in our government today is due to the “pact” that Reagan made with their leaders back in the 1980s. Billy Graham played a huge role in giving birth to that stinker of a deal, and Frank Schaeffer admits his dad also assisted with the endeavor. You’re 100% correct, Rmuse, a Romney presidency would be devastating to LGBTQ Americans, POC, immigrants, women, and any other group in the country that Romney and his supporters would decide to declare “war” on.

Imaging the war between the right-wing so-called christians and the Mormon bishops if Mitt were to become President.

Majii,
I see you posted what we all seem to post. We must STOP naming all the people being affected by the RePiggery Xtians and putting WOMEN at the end. Every other category of minority has a LARGE CONTINGENCY of WOMEN.
Young WOMEN in particular must get off their phones, get in the streets and FIGHT the WARS AGAINST WOMEN. Those of us old enough to have fought this the first time are now too old to be affected by the abortion and contraception issues, but young women really need to UNDERSTAND what these rights mean to them. Barefoot and pregnant is NOT just a saying, it it TRUTH.

I live in Oklahoma, one of the reddest of red states, and am appalled at the number of young women who are IN FAVOR of curtailing reproductive rights, banning abortion, and enacting ‘Personhood’ legislation. These girls have no concern for their peers who make use of contraceptives, Planned Parenthood, or even the Health Department, when it comes to reproductive health care decisions. They truly believe the State should forbid women to abort an unwanted pregnancy, for any reason whatsoever, and many believe that using contraception causes cancer, abortion causes suicide, and feminism is equal to lesbianism. (Of course, we also have one of the highest rates of teen-motherhood, and single-parenthood, in the entire country….along with some of the lowest amounts available for public assistance – but at least them bebbies is gittin’ borned, right?)

Romney’s Ethics and Sex
If men think they have a hard time getting laid now, boy are they in for a surprise if Romney/Ryan/Akin get their way.
The ONLY birth control will be the rhythm method and condoms.
First the Rhythm Method: stress of ANY kind can cause your period to be delayed so there is really no sure fire way to know safe times of the month, even if the man ( I had a boyfriend who did this) keeps track of his partner’s periods.
In other words, Rhythm Method is not at all reliable.
Condoms: I think we all know how well these work IF they are used.
Since abortion for ANY reason would result in a MURDER CHARGE AGAINST THE WOMAN JUST HOW MANY WOMEN ARE GOING TO GO TO BE WILLING TO HAVE SEX WITH ANY MAN WITHOUT A “CHILD SUPPORT DEPOSIT” I.E. A PRE-SEX AGREEMENT OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT?
Now of course the woman has to prove who the father is but with DNA, no problem. PRIOR TO HAVING SEX, women simply demand a swab test inside the mouth of their male partners. If they refuse, a quite trip to the bathroom after sex will supply a swab test of semen, as well as that well known “wet spot” on the sheets.
Yeah, facing a possible MURDER charge every time some guy asks you to go to bed with him ain’t no big deal.
Come on fellas, we like sex to but NO MAN is sexy enough when you can end up with a MURDER charge against you.
And guys, one you are proved the father, you can be hunted down for child support till the kid is 18. Sure you could leave the country, go underground, but doesn’t that throw a big big BIG obstacle into your career plans.
And, all this can happen for just ONE SEXUAL EXPERIENCE.
If you want to have sex often, and especially with different women, then every time YOU face financial disaster and the woman faces possible MURDER charges EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU HAVE SEX, AND THIS IS EVEN IF YOU ARE MARRIED.
YES, MARRIED WOMEN WHO HAVE ABORTIONS WILL FACE MURDER CHARGES AS WELL !
Yeah fellas, good luck on that getting laid…

Frigidity In Women:
Kinda hard to relax and enjoy sex when you have to consider either:
Having a child——at a young age, out of wedlock, or after 3 or 4 births, or when you decide the next morning that ‘yeah’ you really DO want that divorce after all —
Having an illegal abortion south of the border (pun intended) by a doctor you have never met, who may be wearing a mask to hide his identity, and who will immediately leave the premises as soon as he finishes on you ESPECIALLY IF YOUR LIFE IS IN DANGER BECAUSE YOU STARTED HEMORRAGING—-AND—knowing that the man involved will disavow having ever met you if you are caught as he could then be ARRESTED FOR CONSPIRING WITH YOU TO COMMIT MURDER I.E. ABORTION.
Having MURDER CHARGES filed against you if you try to abort the child OF THE MAN WHO RAPED YOU AT KNIFEPOINT because Mr. Akin says you MUST HAVE ENJOYED IT as otherwise your body would shut down and prevent pregnancy.
Having make out a last will and testament along with a living will prior to having sex, because if you get pregnant AND YOUR LIFE IS ENDANGERED BY THE PREGNANCY, IT WILL STILL BE CONSIDERED MURDER IF YOU HAVE AN ILLEGAL ABORTION ( remember, legal abortions will not longer be legal !)
Kinda hard to relax and enjoy having sex when the ONLY contraception allowed is rhythm and condoms and that hunk of man who is making you lose your common sense doesn’t want to wear a condom, or ran out, or simply forgot.
And all this applies EVEN IF YOU ARE MARRIED.
Women will let men joke all they want about how “frigid” women are because it sure beats having to face a possible MURDER CHARGE.
Stock market will improve however as anyone with an IQ higher than their age will invest in the manufacturers of vibrating sex toys and rubber blow up dolls.
Gay marriages will likely become legalized as gays will soon outnumber heterosexuals who are unable to function sexually due to the extreme anxiety and cost of tranquilizers.

Which is the GOP’s entire point, of course. Keeping the legs (and dissenting mouths) of women shut, elevating rape to ‘just another means of conception’, and making gestation mandatory if we happen to conceive, are all in service to rendering women powerless once again. These men are so envious of our ability to grow another human within us, that they are determined to chain us to this one biological function, mandating that we submit to our biology regardless of our personal feelings on the matter. There is no evidence that men will be held equally liable for an unwanted pregnancy – But if these Congressmen are asked to allocate more funding for support programs, the answer is usually a resounding ‘NO’. This is NOT a ‘pro-life’ stance: it’s a PRO-CONTROL position.

In 2012, it’s obvious that reproductive rights we thought were a settled deal are far from that. I have never seen such a large group of stupid, ignorant, and backward GOP politicians. They seem to know little to nothing about the female anatomy and how it works. This cluelessness is notable in men who are husbands and fathers, which makes it even worse. They are willing to sacrifice the lives and health of women in the name of being pro-life, which means they really don’t care about the children whose lives they claim are sacred. While Willard loves to change his spiel depending on the audience he’s in front of, there’s no doubt whatsoever that he is a willing captive of the far right. They will expect a lot of him in return for his support if he gets elected, which is reason enough to keep him out of the White House.

“…They [fundamentalist christians] will expect a lot of him in return for his support if he gets elected…”
True, but then again, they had 8 years of Bush and they were never satisfied. He appointed their fascist little off-spring to the AG’s staff, made a faith-base government pot’o money for them, etc. and they still wanted more!
If Mittens ever gets near the Oval Office, his first priority is, and will always be money, money, money! If anything, Mittens will demand that the Billy Graham crowd pony-up with large sums from their coffers as a “deposit” on the programs they want/he’ll sign into law…he’ll just rob them blind, too! King Con!
He’ll turn around and lie to them (just like he always does) saying that he can’t get congress/senate on his side, he’s got other priorities on his plate, more excuses to shine them on–remember, he’s all about the money and power, not people who called him a cultist one day and then changed their minds the next; only Mr. Mittens can do that!
…things don’t work the other way around according his business model, the one we actually get to see!

I tend to agree with your scenario SinghX. A Romney presidency would focus on making money for the top 1-2% as trickle down theory takes precedence in an attempt to create economic growth.
Their extremist social agenda has to take a back seat since they would come off as pushing a extremist social agenda at the expense of economic growth. The way Romney talks is that economic growth will explode on the first day of his presidency. If not he will come across as stupid since his whole shpiel has been that a businessman knows how to grow businesses and create employment.

Not meaning to quibble, but Akin said “legitimate rape.”
You can also say goodbye to stem cell research.
The frigidity issue raised a good point – in fundamentalist societies in which the women are good girls and do what they’re told, men go to prostitutes for the fun things their wives aren’t supposed to do. Or because their wives don’t want to have sex and get pregnant for the 7th time. We’l see a higher incidence of prostitution if the right wing nut jobs have their way. And abortions will still happen. And more women will die.

These wackos are so desperate to gain control thought that Romney was a good candidate. Romney’s extreme desire to have total control probably told them what they wanted to hear to get that “NOD.” If we think that Mormonism is not a Christian religion imagine what it would be like under Evangelistic “Christian” ideology. Everyone not in agreement would probably be imprisoned. We cannot allow these extremes to operate within our society and must do our part by voting and helping those with obstacles to get their votes in.

From what I can tell, most Evangelicals have no clue regarding Mormonism. For starters, their
” God ” isn’t the Christian God Jehovah/Yahweh, it’s Elohim, a 6’2 MAN living on a far distant planet circling the sun Kolob with his sons jesus and Satan. In fact, in Mormon theology, Elohim is superior to Jehovah. Joseph Smith referred to Christians as an “abomination” in his boof ” Pearls of Great Wisdom “. Strange bedfellows indeed. Billy Graham just this week removed Mormonism from his list of cults.

@Kathy:
The young women you have described are among those who have no notion whatsoever about the women’s right movements and how they have benefitted society at large. I would be willing to bet that unless or until they are personally impacted by such repressive and regressive policies, they will continue to be delusional. They have apparently failed to connect the dots and to see the cause-effect relationship between women’s control of our reproductive lives and how it has in turned empowered us toward better education, better health, ability to actively participate in politics, better job opportunities, and better use of our talents to benefit society at large. We are definitely not as far along as we need to be, but we’ve come a long way. It’s a sad commentary that their self-deception doesn’t allow them to look at the larger picture.
