MSNBC Blames and Dumps The Working Class by Moving Chris Hayes to 8 PM
The reason why Chris Hayes is moving to 8 PM is because MSNBC thinks that they can attract more viewers by not talking about issues that impact the working class.
The New York Times has the skinny on why Ed Schultz was moved to weekends, “The change is predicated on the belief that MSNBC can win a wider audience with Mr. Hayes than it did with Mr. Schultz, a champion of the working class whose bluster didn’t always pair well with Ms. Maddow and the channel’s other prime-time program, “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell.” Mr. Hayes, on the other hand, is just as wonky as Ms. Maddow and Mr. O’Donnell, and is a regular contributor to both of their programs.”
MSNBC thinks that their viewers don’t want to hear about working class issues, so they dumped Ed Schultz for a man whose only familiarity with the term blue collar comes from books and shirt colors. White intellectual progressives are overjoyed by this move, but the execs at MSNBC don’t seem to have any clue about who is actually running the left now.
White progressives aren’t in charge anymore. The Obama coalition of women, African-Americans, Hispanics, gays, and young people is powering the left. If MSNBC really wanted to reach a broader audience, they would have promoted someone who looks and sounds like that audience into prime time. There is not a single non-white host on cable news between 8-11 PM ET. This trend will continue with Chris Hayes.
MSNBC is already trying to spin this by touting the number of minority guests that Hayes features on his current weekend program Up. The problem is that those guests aren’t talking about the issues that impact the Obama Left the most. Chris Hayes is promising that he will think with us through the news five nights a week, but some members of MSNBC’s audience don’t need a lecture from a white intellectual who embodies every stereotype of progressives that conservatives hold.
The execs at MSNBC think that putting a Rachel Maddow clone into the 8 PM slot will bring them ratings glory, but just what audience are they trying to reach? By dumping working class America, MSNBC’s top brass is sending the message that they don’t really care about the problems of most Americans.
Ed Schultz’s show wasn’t perfect, but it was unique. Schultz gave a regular platform to guests who the mainstream media establishment ignores. Sen. Bernie Sanders, union leaders, and the stories of regular working class Americans were regular parts of his show.
Just one night after Schultz may have had his best show ever, he and his viewers get kicked to weekends to make room for Chris Hayes’ progressive intelligentsia shtick. Ed Shultz’s viewers aren’t going to tune in to hear Chris Hayes ignore them.
Phil Griffin and MSNBC have tried this stunt before. They once tried to replace Keith Olbermann with Lawrence O’Donnell, and we all remember how that worked out.
The message to the working class is clear. MSNBC doesn’t care about you, and the things that matter to you.
MSNBC used to have that bigger audience that they crave with Keith Olbermann, but Chris Hayes isn’t Keith Olbermann.

What you are saying is that Ed Schultz is a liar. He laid out at length why he is switching. It’s not because of what you say. I also have seen demos that show that Ed is not getting blue collar workers. Us white liberals love watching him and the labor issues.

Jason,
A a white collar female of the middle class persuasion, I love Ed’s Show and his powerful push for blue collar workers who comprise the vast majority of this country. He brings a different set of values that we all hold dear even though we may not spend our lives in a uniform or with a lunch bucket, albeit I am married to a “guy who works for a living” myself. He speaks for those men and women who do not get paid fairly and actually do physical labor.
Chris Hayes is fine – but we need WOMEN and MINORITIES on MSNBC. Joy Reid would be perfect – she is a journalist, very intelligent and speaks to all of us out here in America~there are many other “minority folks” of both sexes that would bring a lot to MSNBC’s viewership.
As PROGRESSIVES and LIBERALS we MUST DEMAND a fair shake for EVERY WORKER of all pay scales to be represented.
Moving Ed to weekends will hopefully get more blue collar folks to watch, but alas, they work on weekends as well – if MSNBC adds more programs that speak to MORE AMERICANS and get off their prison crap on weekends, they would do us all a favor.
I love the high-mindedness of other hosts, but Martin Bashir is the type of host needed in primetime – he SPEAKS to and for EVERYONE~and is not “just another white guy”.

Eykis, I am self-employed and retired (if you can accept that). I work hard in a grass mowing business. So while I am not in your life situation, I totally share your feelings as you have stated them. Martin Bashir has to be one of the smartest men on cable. Notice I said men. There are several females I find to be even smarter than him. Perhaps one day they will be on prime time and we can have a minority female to view.

On top of his schedule is the fact that his wife was recently diagnosed and is still fighting her disease. Ed wants to be there for her and spend as much time with her. With this new schedule he will be able to handle his radio show during the week and be there for her.

I like Ed… and I loved how he stood up for the middle class and for unions etc.. But in many ways, he was also a big cheerleader for the democrats. I think Hayes will bring a little more intelligence to the prime time line-up. I do not think MSNBC viewers did not appreciate how Ed supported workers’ rights and the poor and working class. I am glad Hayes will have the 8 o’clock time slot and I’m also happy that Ed will still be around on the weekends. I look forward to watching both.

Completely BS move by MSNBC. Ed may have come across as the lefts “Bill-O”, the volume and one sided polls, but he does have the back of the working man. Putting him on in “end of the game time” on weekends further kills his audience. I like Chris Hayes and Ezra, who topped the rumor charts, but neither will attract or keep Joe six-pack. I know guys “down at the bar” who liked Ed Shultz and even started watching Rachel because of him. Maybe they even learned to “Lean Forward”. Good Luck Ed. You deserved better.

I stopped watching The Ed Show weeks ago. Ed is truly a loyal supporter of the middle class and unions. He is not a loyal supporter of President Obama, however, and that is a problem as far as I’m concerned. When he goes on an Obama rant (Denver debates, proposed budget negotiations on entitlement reform, meetings with Republicans, etc.) Ed exudes such doubt about whether the President will “perform” the way Ed thinks he should, that I have found myself shouting at him and turning the sound down. Furthermore, he can carry on with snide remarks for evenings on end. I stopped watching Rachel last week. She, too, thinks it’s cool to trash the President. I do not share her enthusiasm.

To be blindly loyal is to be blind. We are responsible for holding those elected to office to high standards and we should not give anyone a pass just because they share a political party with us.

Vic,
I’ve seen your interpretation of Ed’s back and forth on President Obama, however, Ed treats his audience as though they can think for themselves and anyone who did not vote because Ed was upset at things I, too, was upset with “giveaways by POTUS” that failed themselves and the country.
Chris Matthews does the same thing and the huge difference is Chris has been inside the Beltway for 40 years and thinks he knows more than everybody else and is often WRONG-and WRONG-HEADED about POTUS. I constantly Tweet and email Chris to “get out of the Beltway and find out what is going on in America”, as he is CLUELESS~America is not the white patriarchal country that Chris grew up in nor the one I grew up in-at the age of 59, I have been around long enough to know it takes EVERYONE to VOTE at EACH and EVERY ELECTION from Cat Collector to POTUS to WIN~that needs to be promoted by MSNBC, constantly.
One of the biggest problems in America today is that people do NOT vote every election and we end up with statehouses full of Evangelibagging RePigs, like Tennessee and Texas who spend each and every day of the Lege session REMOVING CITIZENS RIGHTS~because they can and the gerrymandering must be STOPPED.

I am sorry Victoria but attitudes like yours is why the term “Obamabot” was coined. I am a staunch supporter of our President and I worked nonstop for 10 months to help get him re-elected. I agree with 95% of what Obama has said and done BUT I have the right, in fact I am OBLIGATED, as are Ed and Rachel, to question our President and all of our elected officials if warranted.
We do not need nor can we tolerate blind allegiance to anyone . . . we would do so at our own peril. Please rethink your stance on this.

Mar. 14th, 2013 at 2:06 pm
This response to the move by Ed Schultz is completely misguided and simply not true. MSNBC didn’t dump the middle class…LOL!!
Ed told the audience that he is moving to weekends to spend more time (2-hour shows) getting deeper into what he considers are serious middle class issues and by traveling around the country to do that..which will be very interesting..he said he was tired of being in a studio 5 nights a week. He also said that he is keeping his radio show M-F. He said that 14 hour days were getting to be too much for him (it was reported he had some health issues) so MSNBC is not moving him for the reasons stated above. And Chris Haynes is very popular, smart and proven he has a good understanding of middle class issues. We need more people like Rachel Maddow.. Sorry i think this criticism is way off!

I agree, Ed has had to deal with his wife’s health issues and maybe he was just tired. I think he will get more eyes on the weekend and it is a good move. I also like Chris Hayes so it will be interesting to see who they pick to replace him on Saturdays. But I sure wish Keith would come back somewhere I so miss his voice.
I think it was Ed not the MSNBC management who wanted this change.

Next thing you know MSNBC will hire Hannity or how about Ann Coulter? Ed was great, he could identify with the average working man or woman. I will watch him on the weekends but miss him during the week, he made my day. I don’t think MSNBC knows what they are doing, look what they hired to be on the Cycle, that creepy SE Cupp! She belongs with Glenn Beck!

The Cycle is a joke, full of people UNQUALIFIED to be pundits. Krystal Ball is a married pregnant mother who apparently spends 14 hours a day at MSNBC rather than dealing with her real life. Toure and Kornacki are simpletons and SE (I call her IMBECILE) does in fact, work for Glenn Beck.

So now Chris Hayes can go prime time with guests like Samuel Rodriguez who he introduced as the Evangelical leader for Hispanics when what he really is is a schill for the Dominionists like Gen Jerry Boykin, Brian Fisher. Rodriguez joined their Oak Initiative until he was caught by another religious blogger and exposed for his attendance at their conferences and promoting the “Pray Away the Muslims” in Dearborne. For someone who is supposed to be so bright, Hayes background check skills suck big time.
I would add that despite his claims to have left the Oak Initiative he was caught again supporting and attending their conferences.
Victoria Lamb, MSHA

I needed only to look at the author of this nonsensical piece to know I would see nonsense. Mr. Easley doesn’t like Chris Hayes and has decided this is all about squelching Ed Schulz, even though Schulz himself has denied this and seems to be quite satisfied to be ending this part of his grueling schedule.
I’ve watched a lot of Chris Hayes’ show on the weekends and have never noticed any antipathy toward laborers, labor unions, the poor, the middle class, the blue collar workers, etc., etc. Does the show get a little wonky? Yeah, what’s wrong with that? After years of seeing public discourse dumbed down I like having something intellectually challenging and complex to play with. Frankly, Ed used to make me cringe at times with some of his pronouncements, his mispronunciations, his misinterpretations, his over-the-top inferences from unsupportable assumptions. Chris’s fidgeting can get a little nerve-wracking at times, but he’s young yet and can outgrow that habit. At least he’s highly intelligent and brings diverse and interesting guests onto his shows. That some of them may not reflect my point of view does not bother me. It’s not like he fails to challenge those trying to pull the wool over our eyes.

Um, this kinda goes contrary to what Ed HIMSELF said:
“I raised my hand for this assignment for a number of personal and professional reasons. My fight on “The Ed Show” has been for the workers and the middle class. This new time slot will give me the opportunity to produce and focus on stories that I care about and are important to American families and American workers.
“I’m very proud of the work our team has done here at 8 pm, but sitting behind this desk five nights a week doesn’t cut it for me. I want to get out with the people and tell their stories. This show has been a show that has been a voice for the voiceless. That really was my mission when I came here and it remains.
“I’m going to be here at MSNBC for a long time – I’m not going anywhere – and I invite all of you to join me on Saturday and Sunday from 5 to 7 pm. The show will start in April.
“I will continue to do my radio show, and I’ll be back here tomorrow night for my final show.”
Ed made it clear that it’s been tough keeping up the long hours of doing a radio show and a TV show all in one day, 5 days a week. This will alleviate some of the pressure and allow him to do more of what he wants to do. He’ll still be on television four hours a week, down from five.

Ed Schultz was not a good weekly program. His arguments were repetitive and redundant and often boring. He will be better as a weekend host who can focus deeply on the few topics that interest him. Chris Hayes is an intelligent articulate host whose show was as good as anything on MSNBC. He will do well in the 8pm timeslot.

How ironic that Ed just had the best show ever in Prime Time.
“His working class bluster didn’t always pair well with Ms Maddow’s..” That’s right.. no diversity for us.

I don’t particularly like Ed mostly because I don’t like bombastic shows. Chris Hayes is a fine, young (maybe that’s the operative word here) and extremely intelligent man but, at the risk of being blasted for this, I’m afraid two wonks back to back 5 nights a week might not be a good idea for your average viewer. Chris delves deeply into serious topics, covers them well and the format seems to work. He really needs the amount of time he is given on the weekends to accomplish this. His show is mostly interesting and usually doesn’t reach a fever pitch of yelling. While I’m not a big fan of Ed or Keith for that matter, there is an audience for their type of show. But if Ed really wants to cut back on his time, good for him. We may really never know the real reason behind the shuffle.

There is another problem in television that needs to be updated to fit today’s world. The old demographics simply DO NOT FIT. The fact that the vast majority of Boomers are around my age – are out of the “demographics” used to determine “desired viewership” meaning “spends money”. Why do we see nothing but Viagra and Low-T type commercials all evening? Kind of crazy and not geared toward the “desired viewers”.
We are the people who have been in the workforce for 40 years, raised families, lived through good and bad times economically and watch as our 40 years of hard work and believing in the “American Dream” is being snatched away from us like we are doddering old fools who do not work, do not purchase things, do not worry about retirement, when we are the ones being hardest hit in the job market and the economic recession, losing healthcare and social security. Personally, I’ve been paying into Social Security and Medicare since 1968, I went to work at age 14 because I wanted money to buy a car – it was easy to lie about your age in those days and working at the local shopping center “dime store” was a “good job for teenagers” and I always had “my own money” in my pocket.
I do not consider Medicare or Social Security an “entitlement” that Congress can steal from me – it is a savings account for which I have been paid NO INTEREST since 1968~I plan to collect my share.

It’s to bad he is leaving the time slot. He spoke to the working class and their issues. I think him going to the weekend and getting 2 hrs is going to be better because he can concentrate more on the working class issues. I like Mr Hayes but he can get way to wonky for me. This is not the first Easley article that seems fabricated. Ed Schultz himself said why he is leaving and he opted for this, an early comment gives his verbatim explantation last night on air.
Not only does Ed have a radio show, he’s been supporting a wife who just went through chemo.
Easley, cut the BS. A retraction would be nice. Politicususa is diminished by fake news, and divisive news at that. Will purge them from my FB page and tell why, as this isn’t the first divisive and untrue reportage.
Lastly just Schultz got the scoop of major proportions, good on him. a classy man who calls ‘em as he sees ‘em. Furthermore Maddow always seems genuinely fond and respectful of Schultz. Again, Eseley’s article is full of bs.

This also ignores the fact that before MSNBC only started catering to the liberal audience after out-FOXing FOX failed, they kick off anyone who speaks truth to power, and that blue-collar workers are among the most conservative demographics in the country.
Rachel is a good storyteller, but she’s the perfect cheerleader for the bourgeois liberal; Ed commonly tries to lend a voice to the working class, but most working-class people are still Reagan fans; so while Chris Hayes may be the perfect Jewish progressive upper-crust stereotype, he actually drives home the PHILOSOPHY behind social democracy. He does what Olbermann tried to do, but with far more tact than the old sportsman.

I shall miss Ed on weeknights. I’ve been watching him from the beginning, before he moved to the 8 pm slot. I also enjoy Chris Hayes’ show (and Melissa Harris-Perry’s) on weekends, though I usually have to record ‘em on the DVR.
If I had my “druthers” on who should replace Ed during the week, I’d like to see either Martin Bashir or Joy Reid. It will be a shame to exchange the thoughtful, more comprehensive format that Hayes uses on “Up” for a more generic rehash of the day’s news.
There seems to be an awful lot of hostility in the comments here. I’m a Boomer, but I enjoy most of the shows on MSNBC (save for Chuck Todd’s and “Morning Joe” when Joe’s on one of his childish rants). I thought “The Cycle” would be a bust, but now find that I kinda like it. It’s refreshing to listen to a mix of perspectives, especially when that mix is leavened with humor.
After all, liberals are NOT reactionaries–or shouldn’t be. We don’t require purity, surely? Are we taking a page from the Republican book now and outlawing civility?

I shall miss “Big Eddie”, he really cared about the working class and was full of passion about politics.
Why not put Melissa Harris-Perry on before Chris Hayes, and get rid of one of the repetitive Chris Mattews shows. He must have ADHD, as he always interrupts and talks over his “guests”, it comes across as rudeness.I also cannot watch “The Rev”, who comes after Chris, talking too slowly by contrast, and has stated that he will never say anything critical of Obama.
MSNBC needs to dump those horrible prison shows- who in their right mind would watch them? The Sunday entrapment show of Johns thinking they are meeting prostitutes is equally horrible.
They lose most of their audience on weekends, so I wish Ed the best, but they need some quality shows before and after his.
We cannot stand Scarborough and his childish rants and best buddies who contribute nothing. Mika would be a much better host, get rid of Deutsch and maybe Barnacle, and get another woman in their stead.
Martin the Brit is excellent, but here on the West coast, he is on too early, as is the great Melissa.

Chris Hayes is way too much like Rachel Maddow, right down to the similar speech patterns and inflections. He’s a Maddow-clone.
I used to dislike the Ed Show very much as I found him too abrasive. He’s toned that down a lot and I think the show was a good contrast to the others in the line-up.
IMHO it’s Sharpton that should be gone. I am embarrassed by his poor command of the English language. He’s a whiner, not a thinker and not a particularly good interviewer, either.

Intelligent conversation about issues – with a slice of humor – is what I’m looking for, but I don’t have time for it every day all day.

Ed Shultz was the reason I watched Msnbc now I am not sure what I will watch!
He really cared about the working class and he got emotional when he saw what was happening in this country to to middle class .

He isn’t leaving MSNBC, he is moving to a two-hour show on the weekends. According to him this was his decision.

I for one am sick of all the news heads. I do not believe MSNBC is really interested in what many ordinary working folk think because it does not line up w/some of their liberal thoughts. I for one cannot stand any of the MSN heads anymore.

I would like to have Ed take care of his OWN health. Lose some weight, exercise, take care of his wife. And, of course, do fabulous weekend programs.

What a conspiratorial and whiny article. Chris Hayes might not be the best option there is, but just because he isn’t like Ed Schultz, yelling and blustering all the time, doesn’t mean he doesn’t care about the working class or doesn’t want to cover labor issues.
Anybody who has watched his show “Up” on the weekends knows that the news he covers relates to all kinds of Americans, and he tackles serious issues that matter to TRUE progressives. He also has on a myriad of guests that aren’t the typical DC elite that you see on MSNBC all the time. He brings on really interesting and thoughtful guests, and he also adds in his own useful commentary that you can learn a lot from.
Maybe Jason Easley ought to actually wait for the show to start so he can watch it and give a real critique next time. Criticizing the show before it even starts, and complaining about a real progressive journalist who does his job well, isn’t very smart. What is with these liberal on liberal attacks?

Please let me say, Ed Schultz will be terribly missed at his usual time slot.
MSNBC is making a terrible mistake by putting Mr. Hayes in Ed’s time slot.
Just watch the viewership go down, down, down.
I absolutely love Dr. Rachael Maddow, but putting these two fast talkers back to back is something I won’t watch.
The terrible comments have read on the Internet re: Mr. Schultz are totally uncalled for. He insisted this was his call for the weekend change. We have to believe what he says.

Chris has a large following on the weekends, but this is what Ed wants. Plus it will help MSNBC on the road to weekend programming besides jail storys. I think the viewers will stay

There’s room for both Ed and Chris Hayes who I think is particularly sharp. But I do agree, Martin Bashir is being underused. I think he brings a level of sophistication and wit that others lack. I also agree that Joy and Melissa Harris Perry should be given a better showcase. And Matthews keeps using a number of tired pundits who contribute absolutely NOTHING to the conversation. Michael Steele? Please. There are so many brilliant pundits of color who could run circles around Steele. Overall the key word is more DIVERSITY.

I’m sure there were a number of reasons he made this decision, but after his wife’s recent battle with cancer, I can’t help but think he wants to have more time for family.
