At Newtown Memorial, Obama Tells America We Must Change to End the Violence
By: Jason EasleyDec. 16th, 2012more from Jason Easley
At the memorial service for the victims of the Newtown shooting, President Obama said the nation is not doing enough to end the violence and we must change.
Here is the video:
Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
After quoting scripture, the president told the people of Newtown that they are not alone in their grief and that the nation is weeping with them. He said, “Newtown, you are not alone.” The president added that the people of Newtown have also inspired the nation in these difficult times. He then praised the bravery of the adult staffers at the school who responded in such terrifying circumstances by giving their lives to protect the children. The president then praised the first responders, and the children who followed instructions and comforted each other. The president said, As a community you’ve inspired us, Newtown.”
Obama said that the nation is left with some hard questions. The president talked about the job of keeping our children safe and teaching them well is something we can only do together. He said, We bear responsibility for every child. We’re all parents, and they are all our children.” He said society will judge us by how we raise and keep our children safe from harm. He asked if we can say that we are doing enough to keep our children safe from harm? The president said, “I’ve been reflecting on this for the last few days, and if we’re honest with ourselves, the answer’s no. It’s not enough, and we have to change.”
Obama said this is the fourth time he has spoken at one of these memorial services, and that these tragedies must stop and we must change. The president said that if there is even one step that we can take to save one child, one parent, one town from this grief, we must try.
The president said, “We can’t accept events like this as routine.” He asked if we are prepared to say that the politics are too hard, or that this violence is the price of our freedom?
There was something different about this mass killing, and that was reflected in President Obama’s remarks. This president has had too much experience with speaking at this type of memorial. This was his fourth time comforting the nation after a mass shooting, but the first time that he has called for action and change to combat the violence.
It would have been extremely inappropriate for the president to politicize a memorial, which Obama didn’t do, but it is clear that this horrific incident has resulted in a moment of national reflection about our priorities.
President Obama is often criticized for not showing enough emotion, but over the last three days he has worn his heart on his sleeve. Obama is doing what every great leader should do during a time of grief. He is comforting the nation, while offering a vision for the future. One gets the sense that the country wants the violence to end, and President Obama never wants to have to speak at another memorial again.
The president can’t stop the violence alone. Every American must demand that we do everything that we can to figure out why this is happening, and what we can do to build a safer future.
The power to bring about change, and the future in our hands.

Whu not.The madia and the political elite has painted the face of crime as a black and brown one.All I said was everytime there is a gun turn in program the majority happens in the inner city.Do you own guns?Have you turn yours in if you do?When you watch the media who is the face of crime in America.Who do you fear thats coming for your little princess? Its always dont bring this up, its to soon to talk about that. The reason these topics scares people like you is because you dont want to admit the problems we face.BTW the women whose son went on the rampage stockpiled weapons because she was in fear of the scary blackman.Ask youself,do you wonder where she got that idea from?

Take That N—– Off The TV, We Wanna Watch Football!”: Idiots Respond To NBC Pre-Empting Sunday Night Football
NBC pre-empted the first quarter of tonight’s 49ers-Patriots game to show President Obama’s speech at the Newtown memorial for victims of the Sandy Hook shooting. As you might expect, many football fans didn’t take kindly to this. (So, too, some Bob’s Burgers fans.) Here are those idiots, led by someone who claims to be a Division II football player in the state of Alabama. [Update: The Birmingham News reports he was a walk-on long snapper and is no longer on the team.]

Whereas i do not DISAGREE that racial differences are providing us with difficulties, I believe you’ve actually brought a non-issue into this discussion. It does not matter what color the people are. The boy who did the shooting was Asberger’s syndrome and was most likely unaware of any color at all. I also believe that looking at this as a unilateral gun control issue – white, black, brown, yellow doesn’t matter – taking it unilaterally is missing a good portion of the issue at hand.
Again, I think you have a valid point, it simply does not belong here. You’re trying to make something that is a non-issue in this massacre the focal point of all that is probably not the best way to begin looking for solutions. In the end, I don’t think all the racial bantering in the world is going to help.
And by the way, for the love of GAWD, check your darn spelling before posting. Not being able to spell “rich” makes you look very uneducated, and I don’t think that is the case.

Our President did an outstanding job tonight and I am proud that he represented me, as an American, and as a parent. As I watched this tragedy through that lens, I can only echo the president’s words…have we done all that we can? What steps DO we make to ensure that we do all that we can to save even one more life from the horrors of Friday’s violence.
I agree with him…of course we cannot stop evil…but this is not black & white; all or nothing. This is not a one legged stool. This is, as President Obama said, “an issue filled with complexity”, which obligates us to do more, not less. We must stop the sale of assault weapons. We must fund our mental health programs.
We must work to stop the power of organizations such as the NRA from buying our politicians. Our politicians are owned by these groups and their interests. We must get back to the idea that our politicians function the way they were meant to – as public servants – elected to represent the people of their districts, not the groups and power-brokers that make them rich.
I pledge to do all I can to honor these victims by standing up to violence and ignorance.

The power to bring change IS in our hands and we must speak loudly with a clear voice and let our elected officials know that we do not want this to happen again. We must tell them – constantly – that we need and want sensible gun control measures.
It is hard, it has always been hard to tackle the tough issues, and it will continue to be.
Just because it’s hard though, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do it.
Keep up the pressure on your elected officials – show them that We the People want sensible gun control legislation. Don’t let up.

We cannot raise kids in a culture where a gun is the best response to a problem
Chris
Dec. 17th, 2012 at 2:50 am
Exactly. Fix the culture which is the issue not the gun. Banning guns is like removing the Tumor but not treating the cancer.

Fix the culture?Lets see.Do we ban reich wing media whose only purpose is to spread fear?I think you run into a little problem whose name is the 1st amendment.I know, all violent vidieo games shall be banned.See problem #1.Hey I know we need god back in our lives. But whose god.America was founded on violence and was built by violence. So good lick with changing the culture

At the end of the memorial program, when the audience was asked to remain in the auditorium until the president was safely off the property, I realized the weight of the burden he and his family bear because of the constant threats they receive and how much greater it will be in the future.

Hmm. The president quotes scripture and I don’t see or hear any bellyaching from you progressives about the separation of church and state. Interesting how it’s ok when you perceive a benefit from quoting scripture, but if it’s someone you disagree with, lookout!

Supposedly around 85% of the people in this country are Christians. They are not all conservatives. That’s the facts. You left no facts whatsoever
You make the assumption that everyone here is against religion or is an atheist or something. I’m really not sure what your point was other than the fact that you really didn’t have a point

You must remmeber that the founding fathers were with only a couple exceptions relative millionaires. And, worse, many wanted in the constitution that only the wealthy could be representatives. Well they sure got their wish.
many of them were greedy and lost their shirts in land grabs out west. Several died pennieless and several went to prison after signing. I think you should pick up a book called “Signing Their Rights Away” which is all about the founders.
John was not right. Not about anything

Obama will never please the right wing religious nuts.
Shoot… If obama were an atheist, it wouldnt matter WHAT he did, you religiouw lunatics would still bash him, just as you do now, even though he is supposedly a Christian (self professed).
If he were really a muslim, you intolerant christian fucktards would spread your hatred even more simply because muslims are the flavor of the month to hate on.
If Obama were a Hindu you would call him a heathenous polytheistic disbeliever in your god.
But when he tries to include the christian religious community in his memorial speech by trying to say something from your bible that may comfort you and help you relate to him, his religion is irrelevant, and so is yours, because all you hateful lunatics will ever do is demonize this man regardless of who he is/what he says/what he does, because he is not a white bible thumper who is eager to starve 50 million americans by eviscerating our safety net, and dictate through legislation where we can legally stick our penises or what choices women can make regarding their own vaginas.
And you people, who do almost NOTHING christlike in your day to day lives think you have a right to voice your opinion over Obama?
And besides that, to twist a memorial speech by our president into an attack on his supposed duplicity?
Just shut the fuck up. Nobody wants to hear your bullshit. Especially not now.

Look dopey, hypocrisy is hypocrisy regardless of the circumstances. You just can’t stand it when it’s pointed out because it comes from your beloved savior.

Youre right, Dopey. hypocrisy is hypocrisy. Especially the hypocrisy demonstrated by every evangelical Christian who takes pride (a sin of course) in donating to charity, yet has the balls to tell a homeless person to “get a job”, and claims that our country is in the shitter because of all the “welfare queens”. People like the retard you are defending (and Mitt Romney), who cant resist an opportunity to bash the president, regardless of the situation (school shooting? Benghazi? Fuck it… lets bash Obama!)
I never said Obama was my savior, Dopey. I just have enough common sense to see that half of this country is composed of bigots and absolutely brainwashed indigents like yourself, and I find it deplorable for anyone sit here and attack Obama or anyone else for that matter who may value a true separation of church and state, on the ridiculous grounds that our president decided to pay religious respect during his heartfelt speech at a fucking memorial ceremony for 20 dead murdered children, and nobody stood up at this time of crisis and called him a hypocrite.
You sir, are a fucking moron.
If you right wing fucks really cant stand being called out on YOUR hypocrisy, and expect US to sit here and let you bash a president who has been MANDATED into office by those of us who actually have half a brain, then go find republican conservative website where you will be surrounded by others of your ilk.
Youre not wanted here. In fact, youre a disgrace to humanity, a hypocrite of faith and belief, and an obvious example of what happens when our country cuts funding to public education.
Begone.

EDIT: My apologies. You arent defending the retard who said it. You were the one who said it. Oops.
My point still stands.
Why you think NOW is a time to attack obama, is BEYOND me buddy.
Have a little respect for the 20 dead children that are gonna be buried before christmas, and try showing a little restraint with your partisan politics.

Obama is not a chritian, He is a black liberation theologist. That is what the church he attended teaches. If he were a christian he would not have done more for the abortion groups then any president in history. He would not support gay right group agenda,s, He would not be part of a platform that wants to remove God from our country. And on and on

YES. Listen to what the man is saying: WE, as a society must change to end this endless carnage.
It is up to all of us to get sick enough of this horror that WE the people put a stop to it.
Obama is a very intelligent man but he can’t do it all by himself.
We can start by not glorifying weapons and violence in the media.
We also need to pull the plug on all of these disgusting violent video games that capture the minds of so many of our children.
At what point do we sick enough and heart-broken enough over this ongoing carnage that WE put a stop to it?

I am an Australian. We have banned guns in total after a lunatic killed 30+ people in an American style shooting spree. Our total gun homicaides last year were 39 for the entire nation. I understand there were over 3000 gun homicides in the US in tha same period.
Every sane person in the world other than the USA understands that gun control radically reduces gun homicide.
Outside the USA, we don’t know whether to laugh or cry at the debate currently going on in the USA, knowing that you are killing your own children in order to reatin this ridiculous right to bear arms.
You are fools, and the World outside the USA is looking on at your collective foolishness in the wake of your repeated foolishness in recent times. If you want to proclaim yourselves as leaders of the “Free World”, start leading!
