NJ Governor Chris Christie Underwent Secret Weight Loss Surgery; Why?
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who is clearly morbidly obese, underwent a secret weight-loss surgery back in February. His office confirmed the surgery but has declined any specifics.
According to an interview Christie gave to the New York Post today, he underwent a lap-band procedure which entails having a silicone band put around the stomach to limit the amount of food you can eat. This is not the same as gastric bypass surgery, which alters your digestive system. This procedure is also reversible, unlike gastric bypass.
Christie, who has been the brunt of many late night jokes regarding his size, as well as being a potential deal breaker for a run at the presidency, insisted this has nothing to do with politics.
“It’s so much more important than that,” he said. “I’ve struggled with this issue for 20 years,” he said. “For me, this is about turning 50 and looking at my children and wanting to be there for them.”
Back in July of 2011, Christie was briefly hospitalized for an asthma attack. This incident received a lot of national attention and had people speculating if he had the ability to do his job.
Christie had this to say to reporters: “Despite the well-chronicled issues of my weight, I’ve been healthy by the normal indicators.” While his actual weight has never been reported, it’s estimated to be around 350 pounds.
Christie, also known for being a big-mouth-bully, and actually shouting “bullshit” at a town hall meeting last week in Long Beach Island, New Jersey, while children were present, has reportedly lost about 40 pounds in the three months since his surgery.
The Governor also came under fire for taking a helicopter to his son’s ballgame using New Jersey’s tax dollars, and then had a limousine pick him up and drive him the 100-yards to the actual ball field. I’m not one to make “fat jokes”, but come on; he couldn’t walk the length of a football field? Ridiculous!
After “Superstorm Sandy” hit and Christie was forced into a non-stop trek across the state, Dr. Connie Mariano, who was the White House doctor under the Clinton administration, during an interview with CNN stated she was concerned about his health. “I’m worried he may have a heart attack,” she said. “I’m worried he may have a stroke.” Christie responded by saying she had never treated him and that “she should shut-up.”
So, is this his attempt to become fit for a potential 2016 run for the presidency? Only he knows. If you ask me, absolutely. Sadly, people do not like fat. The fact he is an obnoxious bully who has increased New Jersey’s taxes while reducing teachers, police and fire, to name a few, is the more pressing question, in my opinion.
In any case, he’s just not fit as a human being, let alone to be President. Also, regardless of his size, he most likely couldn’t win against Hillary Clinton.

Well I don’t agree with his politics but I certainly wish him well. I hope he gets healthy!

I hoped he would do something like this. I don’t love always love his politics, but, unlike many on the right, do find him to be mostly authentically human. If there is to be a voice on the right, I’d rather it were one like his than others.

Really? It seems to me he is ‘reasonable’ only when it serves him to be. He bullies his own residents if he doesn’t like their questions. He swears in public..just what we need…more coarsening of our language. He hates teachers, unions, and women. Yeah, he’s reasonable all right..a reasonable GOP thug just as bad as Walker, Scott and Snyder.

I have no problem with him having the surgery. Being from NJ and knowing what he has done to the state by systemically getting rid of teachers, police, fire, and rescue while increasing tax dollars, I have issues with.
Him calling a disabled vet an idiot, I have issues with. Him yelling at a town-hall meeting, regarding Sandy, BULLSHIT at someone, as our leader, is disgusting. I dislike him as a human as well as a politician. I however have never made a fat joke about him once. I have schooled people who have. Not nice!
My only reference here was the tax expense to take a limo 100 yards because he either couldn’t or was to lazy to walk.
Health-wise, I wish him well ..

He can lose all the weight he wants to, if the dick doesn’t lose the attitude and the temper-tantrums he will get nowhere near national office.

Why can’t he diet and exercise to lose the weight? He should be thankful he’s still able to walk and do some work to lose the weight. In my opinion this just reflects that congress represents the worst in America. Too fat? Just get surgery. I know he weighs 350 but it’s possible to do it and I know he can afford a trainer to help him. I would never subject myself to surgery when there are obviously better less invasive options out there. Instead of getting secret weight loss surgery, encourage people in your state to lose weight through healthy eating and exercise by telling your story. He’s a leader and had a real opportunity there and he took the lazy typical politician’s way out.

The question should be did his government [taxpayers] subsidize insurance pay for the treatment and if so why we cant have the same plan?

It’s clear you don’t understand how this type of surgery works.
Christie will still have to exercise if he wants to lose weight. The surgery is only a tool. It makes it easier for you to watch your diet and exercise, but you still have to do it.
So, if Christie thinks this surgery is going to let him get away with no exercise, he’s wrong. Sure, he’ll experience a high level of weight loss in the beginning with little or no effort, but if he doesn’t exercise, the weight loss will stop.
And considering that he’s doing lap band, he’s going to have to work harder than those with gastric bypass.
Besides, although Christie isn’t in any immediate health danger (despite what the Late Night Hosts think), the benefits of the surgery outweigh the cons and he will definitely live longer as a result.

Although I disagree with his politics, I wish Christie well.
However, I think many people don’t understand that just because Christie is obese doesn’t mean that he’s in imminent health danger. Most of obesity’s effects on health are not immediate especially since obesity itself isn’t immediate.
Christie is the blunt of jokes because his problem is obvious for everybody to see. However, there are skinny folks with much more serious health issues than Christie but people don’t notice them as much.
But, eventually, Christie’s weight issues would have caught up with him which is why I don’t blame him for the getting the surgery.
