Here is Who The NRA is Really Defending
When the NRA reacted to President Obama’s gun regulation proposals, the organization claimed: ”Only honest, law-abiding gun owners will be affected and our children will remain vulnerable to the inevitability of more tragedy.”
The reality is the NRA is defending people like Richard Schmidt, convicted felon, neo-Nazi and potential terrorist who managed to buy assault weapons and 40,000 rounds of ammunition despite laws prohibiting convicting felons from owning them.
After he killed a Hispanic man and shot two more people with a semi-automatic handgun in 1989, Schmidt was charged with murder and felonious assault. After Schmidt accepted a plea on the lesser charge of manslaughter, he was sentenced to 10 – 25 years in prison. At this point, it’s unclear when Schmidt was released from prison.
Despite his homicide conviction and existing law that prohibits convicted felons from buying firearms, Schmidt was able to buy assault weapons and 40,000 rounds ammunition. Authorities discovered Schmidt’s arsenal while they were investigating him for marketing counterfeit clothes (football jerseys with NFL logos made in China.) The assault rifles; semi-automatic handguns, high capacity magazines and ammunition were discovered during a search of Schmidt’s store and trailers.
Northwestohio reports Schmidt was arrested on December 21. His indictment, unsealed on Wednesday,
charges Schmidt with a variety of crimes related to the possession of 18 firearms, body armor, and more than 40,000 rounds of ammunition. The indictment says Schmidt, 47, was in possession of these items despite being found guilty of manslaughter in 1990. That conviction prohibits Schmidt from possessing firearms, ammunition, or body armor.
According to Michael Isokoff’s report, the FBI also found evidence of Schmidt’s ties to the neo-Nazi movement.
Among the evidence seized, according to search warrants, was a video of a national convention of the neo-Nazi National Socialist Movement; bumper stickers of the National Alliance party, another neo-Nazi group; a “Jewish 500″ list — a supposed roster of Jewish-owned businesses — and paraphernalia from the “Waffen SS,” Adolph Hitler’s Nazi military force in Germany from the early 1930s through World War II, according to the search warrants.
Isokoff also reports that FBI counter-terrorism agents found evidence that Schmidt may have been planning to attack Jewish and civil rights groups in the area of Detroit, possibly with other Neo-Nazis.
The President’s package of proposals target people like Richard Schmidt and the person/people who sold him assault weapons, high capacity magazines and 40,000 rounds of ammunition that may very well have been used for another massacre.
When the NRA, Rand Paul and gun militants throw their hissy fits over sensible proposals like universal background checks, they are defending people like Schmidt who would never pass a background check.. They also defend the people who would sell weapons to others like Schmidt in their opposition to the President’s proposals. And in this case, the NRA is defending someone who may have been planning a massacre of Jews and/or civil rights groups.
Law enforcement is still investigating the specifics in this case, but Schdmit is an example of the need for universal background checks. Those who say otherwise are, in reality, arguing in favor of convicted felons like Schmidt owning firearms. Nothing about that is about defending the second amendment, our children or honest, law abiding citizens.

The loopholes in gun show and internet purchases have to be closed.
I understand that most of the mass murderers have no flags that would stop them, but there is another category – political murders – where men such as this WOULD be stopped. We don’t check them. We must. For sure this Neo-Nazi had a RECORD but there was little way he could be caught.
He got through the cracks in the system.
Those have to be closed. We cannot be a nation of free people if even a handful of zealots decide they have the right to determine who will live, who will die. And as well trained as I am with guns – a liberal using them against the threats from the Right – I cannot defend myself if I have arms full of groceries or am opening the front door with my key.
NO free society should fear its own members. Only way to stop that is good screening, bans on semi-automatic and other assult-types of weapons, and especially a system that has no loopholes. It’s what YOU deserve, what I deserve in a democracy.

EVERY gun starts as a legal gun. I think you need to educate yourself as to how the NRA has hamstrung the ATF. The ATF may as well become the AT for all the good they can do us anymore. Your NRA would do well to stop blaming them. A day will come when everyone knows how the ATF lost it’s power.

Dear GOL:
Are you denying that “the NRA, Rand Paul and gun militants” oppose “universal background checks”?
If you are denying that, there is overwhelming evidence for that. In response to Vice President Biden’s proposal which included universal background checks on all weapons transactions, according to Fox News, the NRA responded “It is unfortunate that this administration continues to insist on pushing failed solutions to our nation’s most pressing problems…”
That is the only thing this article says the NRA did. Every single word of the article other than that one statement, addresses the EFFECTS of not requiring universal background checks.

The NRA is protecting felons and white supremacy groups from scrutiny in regard to guns, violence, and RW terrorism. The American Third Position (A3P,) a political group that claims to promote the interests of whites, was a sponsor of Gun Appreciation Day. One of the group’s officials has said that the organization is a white nationalist group. After Media Matters revealed that A3P was one of the event’s co-sponsors, A3P’s name was removed from the web site related to the event, and a spokesperson issued a statement saying it had a “screening” process to ban “groups or businesses that might detract from the message.” I’ll believe this when pigs sprout wings and fly off into the sunset because it’s too easy to check any organization/person’s background today in a matter of minutes. If MM hadn’t made the A3P’s sponsorship public, the GAD organizers would have carried on with the event and this information would have never seen the light of day.

Your article is total BS.
The NRA protects guys like me who’ve been robbed and mugged. If it weren’t for a concealed weapon, protected by the 2nd amendment, you’d be without my voice tonight.
That guy in the article is prohibited by Federal Law from buying a gun or even a family member having one in his home. If he violates the law, then he should be prosecuted, not the dealer, neighbor or gun show people.

This whole argument over the 2nd Amendment is a waste of time. We have the right to bear arms, regardless of the reasoning behind it. With rights come responsibilities and right now none of us are exercising very good judgement. What we should be addressing are the fears that make gun ownership seem necessary.

What does a private citizen – felon or not – need with 40,000 rounds of ammunition to begin with? That’s just asinine and should not be allowed – for anyone. It doesn’t matter if one says “well I’m a law abiding citizen.” Well tell me then, what does a law abiding citizen need with 40,000 rounds of ammunition?
You want to protect yourself with a handgun, fine. You want to protect yourself with a shot gun, fine. You want to go hunting with a hunting rifle, fine. You want to stockpile assault weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition? Not so fine. There’s no reason for it. NONE.
Time for common sense to enter the conversation about gun laws and regulations. I know it’s sometimes difficult to find, but common sense is there and common sense will prevail. It must.

They need it to fight against a “tyrannical” federal government, that’s slowly taking all their rights and invading every aspect of their lives.
Just don’t ask them to define WHEN the gov’t is tyrannical, WHICH rights they’ve had taken, or WHAT aspects of their lives the gov’t has invaded — they don’t seem to know; they just know that it’s happened because the scary black man is still in the White House, and their masters on FOX and hate radio told them so . . .

“…don’t ask them to define WHEN the gov’t is tyrannical, WHICH rights they’ve had taken, or WHAT aspects of their lives the gov’t has invaded — they don’t seem to know…”
You forgot “WHERE”; I digress. I can “define” why they behave in this fashion; it’s important, or else we just yell back “they’re idiots” so, defining what we see beyond the surface makes sense.
The underlying reason that “they don’t know” cannot define tyranny, liberty, etc., (or much else) is because they are under/in a faux cloud of a closed-mind communication loop circuit. This is how cults control their followers; they define, isolate and bombard with propaganda instead of reality.
IMHO, we need to use the “C” word on these folks; most followers of these kinds of conspiracy theories belong to a hard-core right wing political group(teabaggers, etc) or religious cult (fundie-evan-mormon)and/or both. Cult use a slow process of persuasion, indoctrination in order to re-train/break-down followers in order to get believer in line. You may think this is something teabaggers/fundies do of their own free will, but…fact is we’ve all been victims of heavy pressure sales techniques (very similar). Plus, these are mostly disenfranchised, gullible, along with core values based in bigotry, “certainty”, etc so they are easily recruited.
When we see the end result, we just shake our heads in bewilderment; how can they actually “believe” such paranoid crap? Easy, they can’t “define” it…

Slightly OT Youtube…but makes the case as to how people can be so “obsessed”, rather possessed, with some kind of “power” (guns) whose only reason for exist is “judgment” on who lives and who dies.
These are people who are addicted to “gun power” and have decided that they own this “power” (life and death) and, back it up by something they call a ‘holy spirit” that they “claim” lives within them.

The NRA’s opposition to reasonable gun control measures enables dangerous miscreants like this Richard Schmidt to obtain weapons they have absolutely no business with. It speaks volumes about where the NRA leadership’s priorities lie, and it’s not the safety of all Americans. For years, this leadership and their defenders have used the excuse that criminals will do what they want anyway as an rationale to do nothing. With this Guns Appreciation Day stunt, they’ve shown that their gun “appreciation” goes way beyond simple appreciation to an irrational opposition to sensible measures. They made it entirely about themselves and how they are being deprived. Having it around the birthday of a man who preached and practiced non-violence during his short life (which ended violently) is a travesty.
In their pursuit of profits from gun sales, they have lost their humanity, basic decency, or common sense.

What a stupid article. The NRA has been SCREAMING to enforce the laws that were ignored when this convicted felon bought weapons and ammo. So WHO allowed this to happen? It wasn’t the evil NRA you morons!! It was law enforcement and their inability or negligence in enforcing the laws. So how do you brain surgeons think that a guy like this gets his weapons? Maybe he creates a false identity – gets a new drivers license and SSN….these are the types of things guys in prison learn. Prisons in this country are GRADUATE SCHOOL for criminals. How does a cop charged with domestic violence get a gun? That is against the law. Here is how: the prosecutor who has prosecutorial discretion will refuse to charge the officer. OR if he has it somewhere else the Police Benevolent Society and his Police Union will pay an attorney to have the conviction overturned or reduced to a not guilt filing.
I have seen some pretty lame responses here – but blaming the big bad wacko gun crazy NRA is simply dishonest and unethical. That is is not real journalism.

The minister whose son killed five family members in NM earlier this week had an assault rifle and several guns in the home. Just found out that when a family member purchased a new gun they were automatically on the rolls of NRA even though they didn’t want to be. Wonder how many others are members and don’t know it? The family member sent a letter asking to be removed but never got an answer. It is funny to me that people are upset that somehow “They” might come for their guns if they knew that had them. Believe me if you have a gun and got it legally you are on a list somewhere. Since the internet came into being it is very hard to hide from anyone and I know that for a fact. This nation needs to stop FEAR which causes HATE and is eating us up.
