NRA Fueled Loonies Are Now Threatening Democratic Members of Congress
Rep. Richard Nolan is the first Democratic to go the record describing the thinly veiled threats that he is getting from NRA members who are being misled on gun control.
Here is the video from Up with Chris Hayes:
Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
Rep Nolan (D-MN) said, “Chris, I think it would be a mistake, however, to underestimate the kind of toxic effect that the NRA is having. I have never, ever in all my life feared for my security, and I’m not fearful of it now. But I’m a little more than I ever had been before. We’ve been getting a lot of not very thinly veiled threats and calls into my office. You know, things like, ‘you tell Nolan he better watch his back. Nobody has actually come out and said they’re gunning for me, but the messages are quite angry, vitriolic, and a little bit frightening to people at my front desk who have been taking the calls. So, I’m a little nervous about it. I’ve never been nervous before. They’re very toxic in the effect they’re having on the American public.”
This is straight out of the right’s playbook. We have now moved on to the part of the process when the Republican base has been whipped into fear by the NRA and their Fox News led conservative media, so they are now threatening Democratic members of Congress.
Since the Gabby Giffords shooting any member of Congress would have to be crazy not to take these threats seriously, but Rep. Nolan did a great job of expressing concern, while not being intimidated by the NRA’s fear campaign. Fear is really what all of this is about.
The NRA has tactically planted completely unfounded fears of gun confiscation, and now the emotionally guided far right are trying to terrorize anyone who they think is going to take away their guns.
The gun control debate is following the same path as the great right wing Obamacare freak out of 2009-2010. Gun confiscation has replaced death panels in the right wing mind.
NRA members are trying to use the fear that most members of congress must have after the Gabby Giffords shooting to scare them away from gun control. Deplorable and despicable behavior is nothing new for NRA, but the times are changing, public opinion is against them, and the one sure way to make even stronger gun control than what’s being proposed a reality is to have one of these subhumans try to follow through on their threats.
The tactics that the NRA has chosen have put them on the path to a fight that they can’t win. They have to hope that they can scare Democrats and Independents into backing down. But after Newtown, the majority of this nation doesn’t fear the NRA and won’t be backing down.

His district is democratic but is mostly rural. The state elected Al Franken and a district also sent bachmaan to congress so I dont know how this will play.
I would tend to think that even though gun ownership is a central part of their lives they want common sense regulations.
Its going to come down to messaging. My bet is, the more the NRA talks crazy the more people will be turned off by them.

Though not having designated the NRA as a hategroup, the SPLC’s blog, Hatewatch, has just posted two articles on the subject of fanatic gunnuttery.

These reality-challenged, mentally unbalanced loons show the some of the very reasons sensible gun control is necessary. They belong either in prison or involuntarily committed to mental institutions, because their fanatical love for guns obviously supersedes any of the human decency and caring that would be present in sensible and responsible gun owners.

this would be a nice time for the Democrats in the House and the Senate to stand up as a block and say, “we will not vote for anyone’s guns to be taken away as that is illegal. We will vote for an assault type weapons ban. At the same time we will not accepted nor rest while the NRA is sending us threatening messages. We do not care what the NRA does nor does it in any way threaten us.”
stand up Democrats it and grow a pair. It’s time to do it. If you lose your seats over guns then America is not a country that anyone should want to live in.our lives are vastly more important than whether or not some goon has to have an assault style weapon.
and it’s not just the NRA. There are groups like Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA), that every day are sending out some of the most vicious lies against Obama that you can imagine. There is a tremendous undertone of bull ship being spread to the people by these groups that are far worse than what the NRA says.

I agree with what has been said above – and remember, all the money the NRA spent in the last election bought them ZERO results – they fared even worse than Karl Rove. So their power is waning and this is the time to seize the moment and put in some common-sense measures, like reinstating the assault weapons ban, banning large clips, and enforcing background checks in ALL venues.

And yet that same percentage wants stricter gun control:

I’d be willing to bet that a more recent poll regarding the NRA would yield entirely different results as to its approval rating.

I have been aware of our politics in this country since the 1960 election of J.F.K. Almost all of the time the Governments reaction to anything constitutes an over-reaction. Seldom do they react in a reasonable manner. It seems to be a matter course to whip up public frenzy on either side of an issue to promote an agenda. Be wary of anything any Politician says or does. They do not care about anything but themselves and more government power.

The NRA has a history of being a bunch of nut jobs. Nobody is trying to take away guns, I do not want the assault rifles being legal and the general public having access to them.

The NRA leadership’s response to efforts to implement sensible gun control underscore just how dangerous and irresponsible they truly are. They are about profits from gun sales first and foremost, with anything else being at best a distant second. Their dangerous irresponsibility lies in the way in which they have always been successful in stirring up fear, hatred, and ignorance among gun fanatics, especially those who are unhinged anyway. They are directly responsible for creating a situation in which a sitting Congressmember can be threatened. Ever since Sandy Hook, they have made it abundantly clear that they are not about having a rational discussion about balancing safety with the right to own guns.

The NRA has tactically exploited, not planted, fears of confiscation. This is not something they imagine. It is the flat out statements of politicians such as Feinstein, Bloomberg, Cuomo, et al as an ultimate goal that they would implement now if they could. Even in ’94 when the “assault weapons” ban was instituted they recognized it as being an ineffective gesture but one that was hoped to lead to more stringent ones. It’s hard to argue with the NRA’s extremist rhetoric when they are given so much ammunition. If those who would regulate guns would acknowledge and address the real fears of us legal law abiding gun owners they could rhetorically disarm the NRA but instead they feed into it. Compromise is possible but not when the left extremists match/exceed the right. I support the NRA even tho Wayne Lapierre is a Loon, he’s our loon.

I understand your feelings on the matter. However my personal opinion is dont take the tact of I follow the NRA right or wrong.(that would go for anything)
We all have to be smart enough to know that some people want a much better world without guns for everyone, but at the same time even those people know they could never get backing for the complete removal or eradication of guns. Neither party would give full support to that, its against the SCOTUS decisions. Starting conspiracy to whip people into a frenzy just to make money isnt really the right American thing to do.
Politicians saying something isnt ammo when the country knows nothing like that could happen. It just allows the NRA to profit from your money. And makes its followers look foolish in the eyes of the sane majority

The NRA and wingers will continue to whip up the hatred and fears until something really, REALLY bad happens…more than Sandy Hook…then they will say…”if only he/she had a gun”…self-fulfilling prophecies…along the lines of O’Reilly/Tiller fiasco…or Oklahoma…you get the point…
