Obama’s Job Approval Rating Hits a 16 Month High
By: Guest ContributorMay. 25th, 2011more from Guest Contributor
A new Gallup poll finds that President Obama’s approval has reached 53% which is a 12 point improvement in the past month.
According to Gallup, Obama’s job approval rating climbed 7 points in a week from 46%-53%, overall his approval rating has reached its highest level since February 12-14, 2010. In the past three days, the President’s approval rating has been over 50% each day. This is all a huge turnaround from mid-April when Obama’s job approval rating sunk to an all-time low of 41%.
There are several possible reasons why Obama’s job approval ratings are going up right now. It is possible that a stream of positive economic data is improving the perception of this president’s job performance. The President’s trip to Europe is a possible factor in his recent bounce, but as we saw in the case of George W. Bush overseas trips have their limits. Even a trip abroad can’t help an unpopular president.
Why is Obama’s popularity increasing so much?
My personal opinion is that Obama is starting to benefit from a number of related factors. An improving economy, the Republicans implosion over the Ryan budget and their attempt to privatize Medicare, and I think that the American perception of this president changed after the death of Osama Bin Laden.
The right wing media has been doing their best to smear Obama’s European trip as a cross between an apology tour and a bar crawl, but they have had little success in halting the growing wave of presidential momentum. It is becoming harder to deny that Obama has gained momentum over the past 6 weeks. His approval numbers are up virtually across the board.
There is more happening here than a Bin Laden bounce. Obama’s approval is also up on issues as diverse as immigration and the economy. A look beneath the basic job approval numbers reveals a president that is still personally popular. A majority of Americans like Obama, and they already had rated his presidency fairly well. We are long way away from Election Day 2012, but the numbers are moving in the right direction for Obama.
No modern president has ever lost a reelection campaign with a job approval rating over 50%. The magic number for incumbent presidents is 48%. As Gallup pointed out, at 48% the odds of an incumbent president being reelected are greater than 50/50.
As long as Obama’s job approval ratings hover around the 50%, he stands a good chance of winning a second term.
Obama has recovered from an at times bumpy 2010, and if his poll numbers hold, four more years might be a reality for President Barack Obama.

Let us be exact. The fact that he was initially too co-operative, too naive, let Blue Dogs squander the opportunity given by what should have been a veto- proof Congress until that opportunity was gone, made him look like an abuse victim cowering before his abusers. Nor did he seem to fight back before the vile lies of the right. How could such a one protect us, then? But in a weekend he humiliated Donald Trump and killed Osama bin Ladin, demonstrating that he was not weak, but patient, cunning, determined – and at need, dangerous indeed. Meanwhile, the Republicans showed they were capable of only betrayal, bigotry, and lies. Now, why do you think things turned around?

the president flat out promised the republicans the chance at bipartisanship. it is they who have failed. spectacularly. again and again. it is they who have been arrogant, who confidently overreached the bounds of decency and, in doing so, have revealed their true natures.
he offered, they floundered.
cunning? he’s practically a jedi.

I agree with you that the people are figuring the republicans out. You cant read any non major media site without understanding what the republicans are doing. I think to a degree that independents are running from the republicans faster than the republicans are running from the Ryan plan.
Every day its something new. has anyone ever read the Issawatch.com site? My god Issa and his crew are insane
We have to get the word out every day

It’s like a madcap Whack-A-Mole game, with the number of agenda-driven Republicans doing their best to dismantle our federal government or make it Bigger Brother in the name of “smaller government”.

I prefer “Bigger Brother in the name of “Koch and other wealthy people”.
I truley think the GOP is handing this country to the wealthy

if the repubs can stay on message about medicare and dems can stay on message about their tax subsidies to corporations while taking everything away from working people Obama’s return to the White House will be a cinch.
Meanwhile, I’ve truly come to believe that Obama’s much smarter and more shrewd than anyone’s given him credit for. He’s a guy who plays his hand close and knows exactly what cards to play when.
I say this partly because some time back when gay people were completely disgusted with him over enforcement of DADT he was telling us that at the end of the day gay people would find that he’s the best friend we ever had in office. Bit by bit, this is proving to be the case. Just like bit by bit he has turned around the international community’s regard for the US. AND he has stuck to his game plan for the economy resulting in definite slowing of joblessness and restoration of two big automakers that were as good as dead and buried. That juggling act was accomplished when it looked like everything–everything–was going to sh*t. Unless I miss my guess, Obama’s still got quite a few cards to play and has a pretty good idea exactly when to play them.
Maybe the coolest thing of all about him is that he never responds directly to the childish BS the repubs, esp the Foxsters, are constantly throwing about him. (Remember the braying about the flag pin or what he puts on his hamburgers? Well, now it’s drunk at Westminster. Next week it will some some equally smelly pile of droppings.
The only question I have is, how much do the swine at Fo have to drink to tolerate the stench?

Danny I agree with you. Obama is far smarter politically than the repubs give him credit for.
Or maybe they know, and thats why so many voter repression bills

sorry–that last line should read, “how much do the swine at FOX have to drink to tolerte the stench?”
BTW I like that name, “Fox.” It’s how Jesus referred to Herod when Herod was making threatening noises about him. Seems well chosen for that network.

Don’t forget one of the most important aspects of the whole OBL death that has not been talked about is that the GOP and the MEDIA had no inkling what Obama and his team were doing! There were NO LEAKS. Obama blindsided them. While they were busy trying to tear him down — he was fulfilling a promise he had made to ALL Americans!
It’s great to have a President that actually puts country first!

DannyEastVillage said it best, saved me tons of typing. I could not have said it better. What I find ironically hilarious is….Obama is the Fox and the Republican camp is the henhouse, and he’s verry clever and stealthy. We already knew he was smart. I’m lovin’ it! I may not agree with every single thing Pres. Obama does, but when something happens, I know…I actually trust him…to do the right thing.
