Barack Obama’s Personal Approval Rating Hits 72% In Battleground States
By: Guest ContributorMay. 16th, 2011more from Guest Contributor
If you want to know why Barack Obama is looking good for reelection despite the our nation’s economic struggles, the new Politico/GWU poll has your answer. 72% of voters in battleground states approve of Obama as a person.
The Politico/GWU poll found that despite 56% of voters saying they are concerned about the economy, President Obama has a 52% job approval rating. Obama only has a 42% approval rating on the economy, but by a margin of 48%-42% he is more trusted to handle the economy than congressional Republicans. Obama is also more trusted to create jobs (47%-43%), healthcare (52%-41%), handle Social Security (50%-37%), keep America safe from terrorism (55%-34%), and more Americans believe that he shares their values (51%-38%). The only issue that the GOP led him on was the deficit, and their lead was within the margin of error (47%-44%).
84% of voters in battleground states said that the death of Bin Laden did not change their support for Obama either way, and 59% of them were either definitely going to vote for Obama or are strongly considering voting for Obama. Only 38% of those polled said that they would definitely not vote for Obama.
When matched up head to head with Mitt Romney and Tim Pawlenty, Obama leads Romney 51%-38%, and Pawlenty 50%-36%.
If it isn’t the death of Bin Laden, then what is raising Obama’s approval numbers? The answer can be found in Obama’s personal popularity. Obama remains very personally popular. Overall 72% of battleground state voters personally like Obama. Of this group, 48% approve strongly of Obama the person, another 24% somewhat approve, 10% were unsure, 4% somewhat disapprove, and 15% strongly disapprove.
Despite the bad economy, these battleground state voters really like Barack Obama. Most Americans are not well informed on the issues. The informed American electorate is a myth. In 2010, 67% of voters got their information from television. The Internet has almost caught newspapers (27%-24%) to be the second most popular destination for information. 31% of Internet users viewed campaign videos online. This is an electorate that watches more than it reads, and Barack Obama plays very well on TV and video.
Since 2008, Republicans have been trying to personally attack or delegitimize Obama through various allegations of un-Americanism. They aren’t doing this just out of hate. They know that their only chance of winning in 2012 is to make Obama less personally popular. They have been trying for years, and they still haven’t made a dent in his personal approval.
When many Americans go to vote on Election Day, they aren’t thinking about issues or policy. Some people are voting for the candidate that they like best. The question do I want to spend the next four years of my life looking at this guy on television is a legitimate one in the minds of many voters.
For as long as there has been polling a bad economy was the one sure thing that makes a president unpopular, but Obama is defying the odds. The President’s personal popularity is politically carrying him through these tough times.
Sometimes the main question for voters is, do I like the guy? If Republicans can’t figure out how to get America to like Obama a whole lot less, they stand little chance of beating him in 2012.
It’s simple. It’s obvious, and it’s the truth.

good on those people for admitting they like him. I cannot think of one Republican candidate I like personally.
Proud of Obama

Me either. Not one. They are all evil and have nothing to offer but hatred, bigotry and fear.
I love our awesome president. He is brilliant. He is working hard for this country. God bless him and his family.

I find the two sentences above about American voters not thinking about issues and policies, and voting for the candidate that they like very scary! People voted for GW because they liked him, and look what we got! I very much like President Obama, but I also agree with his policies, etc, and just wish more voters took the time to educate themselves about the issues, and then the GOP would have a much harder time spreading false and misleading statements. We are a better country because of President Obama!

Anytime people vote for someone based on his being someone they think they could share a beer with (GW), their being “hot” which is in the eye of the beholder (Palin), or being macho with unions instead of finding if they have legitimate grievances (Reagan), what we will invariably get is a sorry excuse for a leader. While this 72% rating for the president gives me hope, it’s not an excuse to get complacent, especially when dealing with ethically challenged folks like the GOP.

I for one pick my doctor based on his golf swing and my accountant on ability to chug a pint in one go.

Those same people that voted G W Bush back in finally turned off their television sets and started looking for real information, is what I’m guessing … good on them for paying attention =) I love our President because I watch CSPAN for real time news about what’s really going on, on the House Floor! Oh! BTW BOEHNER!!! WHERE ARE THE JOBS?!?!?!?

Finally!….Some real results instead of the negative stuff the Republicans put out there. Americans are starting to wake up to Integrity, Compassion, Love, Truth, and their intuition! The Republicans are soooo selfish and they obviously care for BIG corporations and the very wealthy, Our President is for the common american who is struggling or just staying afloat….he has a lot of work in front of him still to clean up the mess that was handed to him when he took over! but he can DO IT! Stick with our President and give him a chance, the truth always comes through with time~~~=))

Ha ha, let’s not indulge ourselve in selfcongratulatory shoulder clapping here. Both bushes have parallels to this situation: CiaBush kicked ass in Kuwait, and D0bya got Saddam. Both lost their popularity pretty soon, the one even so much that he lost the election …. he also had a bad economy to deal with, just like Obama. So I would not break out the champagne just yet. But I admit it’s a nice thing to see. And Obama not only LIKED more, he’s seen as a better leader on a lot of fronts, not just kicking ass in Afghanistan.
Bottom line: we’re not there yet!! and here’s hoping that Obama will lose his shyness after re-election and starts veto-ing a lot of crap he gets to deal with, maybe making a real single payer system in health care?

I believe the universal healthcare is in the progressive budget being offered. I don’t have a link to it but it’s my understanding it will save us a tremendous amount of money. The Paul Ryan plan will cost us 34 trillion over 75 years of extra healthcare costs

@Shiva-i too, hope this country gets a single payer insurance program.Once in it,folks would say”why in the world did we not have this long ago?” I also believe Pres.Obama could get a lot more done(and he has already done a lot),in a second term, when it doesnt have to all be looked at by the next election. He deserves to be in the full term, and we deserve to have him!As for liking him,Lord, what is not to like?A great guy, family man(a TRUE one),brilliant, educated, and so quick on his feet, and ability to handle any crisis. He is young enough to do the job right, and a good speaker, and an attractive person. After him,I simply CANNOT Imagine having to see some of these Loons up there for several years!

This is interesting, but polls mean nothing. Seriously, Hillary was pegged to win the nomination, she led the whole time over Obama, all according to POLLS.
To be honest, Obama will not win. I really want him to win, but sadly, he will not. Republicans have too many mindless followers.

I think this is a pretty good indication of what his overall approval rating would be with a serious upturn in the economy.
