Barack Obama: The Man Who Got Osama Bin Laden
By: Guest ContributorMay. 2nd, 2011more from Guest Contributor
Collective closure of our national 9/11 wound has finally come to America, as President Obama announced that the US military has killed, and is in possession of the body of Osama Bin Laden.
In the years since 9/11, Republicans have run campaigns at all levels on the terrorism issue. They sold America on the belief that since 9/11 happened on their watch, they were the party that was most fit to deal with the threat of terrorism. Republicans still would frequently try to paint Barack Obama as making the United States less secure, and the President as soft on terrorism.
With the death of Osama Bin Laden at the President’s order, all of that changes. The death of Osama Bin Laden is a cathartic moment for nation has never forgotten the horrific events of 9/11, but when the CIA took out Bin Laden on Obama’s order it did something else. It shattered the conventions of post 9/11 politics.
Obama has destroyed the GOP’s tough on terror talking point. George W. Bush may have swaggered and told the nation that Bin Laden was wanted dead or alive, but it was the calmer, less flashy Obama who actually got the job done.
Republicans have already started their dual spin campaign of saying that this should not be about either party while at the same time trying to credit Bush for Bin Laden’s demise. The truth is that the Republican Party under the leadership of George W. Bush helped to keep Bin Laden alive, by giving up on hunting him down and instead adventuring off into Iraq.
In 2008 John McCain vowed to pursue Bin Laden to the ends of the earth, but it was Barack Obama who made sure that there was no escape for one of history’s most famous mass murders. For years Republicans told us that Bin Laden was hidden in cave. They made us think that Osama Bin Laden was a master of disguise. They sold us an image of a man who could not be found or caught.
None of it was true.
Bin Laden wasn’t in a remote cave. He was in a mansion in Pakistan. We didn’t have to use our entire military to get him. A CIA team did the trick.
Barack Obama did what the Republicans couldn’t, wouldn’t, or didn’t do. He avenged 9/11, and delivered the ultimate justice to Osama Bin Laden.
A Republican field that had a slim chance of beating Obama in 2012 will now have to try to convince the American people that the president who killed Osama Bin Laden does not deserve a second term.
Who could have guessed that the biggest beneficiary of the Republicans’ political 9/11 dog whistle would be Barack Obama?
For the rest of human history when the story of 9/11 is told after pictures of that tragic day are shown, the face and words of America’s first African-American president will be forever etched into history as they announce the death of Osama Bin Laden.
Politically, everything has changed.
Barack Obama will now and forever be known as the president who got Osama Bin Laden.

When we consider that the Bush administration was warned by the CIA on Monday, August 6, 2001, that this attack was imminent and that he didn’t heed the warning, the GOP spin looks even more ridiculous. They have been running off at the mouths about how Democrats are “soft” on terrorism, while their macho blustering played into Bid Laden’s hands. This is only the latest example of our president’s mature, measured way of doing things, a method that gets the best results. Given the fact that the bloodiest attack on this country happened on the GOP’s watch, what made them think they were more qualified to deal with terrorism?
I can’t wait to see how they will spin this one, since these events pose an inconvenient rebuttal to their warmongering rhetoric.

No kidding — the right wing spin on this news has ramped up so quickly and so viciously that you’d think their symbol is the Tasmanian Devil, not the elephant.

Bluntly, I have noticed how convenient 9/11 was for the Bush administration, how swiftly they flew members of the Bin Ladin family out of the country before they could be questioned, and how they pulled forces out of Tora Bora when they were within an inch of getting him. BinLadin always made his taped appearances just before elections, and he always appeared to be well-fed, well- groomed, and in a comfortable studio. In eight years, the Bush administration never got him. In two years, the Obama administration did. Nonetheless, I am certain that by this time tomorrow, the whackwing will have spun this into some convoluted treasonous plot on Obama’s part. I only hope the public is catching on to how invidious, small- minded, and bigoted this is.

Yes, people forget that OBL was a member of the Saudi Royal family. Members of my family are calling me tonight to remind me of my statement many years ago. I said he is in a palace in Saudi Arabia or Pakistan and I also said that Bush knew where he was, but because of the ties and connections of the two families, he wouldn’t try too hard to ‘find’ him. The farce of the “hunt for OBL” should have been exposed years ago, before all the death and destruction this drama wrought.

Excellent write up and analysis. Not only is the first time Obama has gotten to deliver good news to the country (clean up from Bush stock market economic disaster and 2 Bush wars), but the fact that they kept this secret for so long says a lot about his team and the way they work together. He’s competent.
This is what it looks like to have someone competent in office.
The right wing is FREAKING out – there are three comments in the trash already. They can’t stand that Obama ordered this and made it happen. They are losing their minds, which is so sad – because they should be happy. This is what they said they wanted for so long.
Good work by everyone involved, and congratulations President Obama – you earned it.

You should see the crap they’re trying to post here.
So let me just say: Give it up, people. We’re not interested in your desperate attempts to spin this and if you think this isn’t political, you’re fooling yourselves.
This is a game changer.
After 8 years of Bush and falsely elevated terror alert levels and all of the other crap the GOP has pulled pretending they cared about our safety when they didn’t, I am in NO mood tonight.
The GOP never even released the secret holds on the TSA chief of security – they could care less about the real issue of our safety.
PRESIDENT OBAMA TOOK CARE OF IT while your guy was playing golf and couldn’t be bothered to read the FUCKING warnings.
Do not bother posting here tonight with your hate, conservatives. We have been called unpatriotic for not sucking Bush’s toes when he lied to us. We’ve been through hell and back as a nation. I am in NO mood to listen to more LIES tonight.
Actions speak louder than words. I see one dead Osama under Obama.

And don’t forget, Bush had said at least once that he couldn’t be bothered with OBL. The one time I know of was in 2006. And now I’ve read about statements put out by a few 2012 GOP hopefuls. What a bunch of ungrateful pricks they are.

I read a few of their statements – they don’t want to “politicize it” but they mention Bush 5 times and Obama 1 time. LOL. Yeah, that’s not politicizing it. Bush is not in office and he didn’t give this order or coordinate this. Are we playing special needs Presidents now? We have to make him feel good? No thanks. Credit goes where it’s due unless they are so pathetic they need us all to give them credit when they haven’t earned it.

As a Progressive, even with all the disappointments from Obama throughout his presidency, I’m so proud and grateful for him to have taken a calm and responsible role in this effort to kill that b*stard. He will definitely go down in history as ridding our world of an abominable creature like Osama, and it kills the Conservatives that Bush couldn’t do it, and his successor did.
By the way, it should be noted that this announcement was made exactly 8 years after Bush made his now infamous “Mission Accomplished” speech, supposedly ending the war on terror. They say that Osama may have been killed a week ago and they’re just announcing it now. They could have done that on purpose to stick it to Bush, but I could care less whether that’s the case or not.

Excellent post Jason! President Obama, the no drama President, has meticulously been doing his job, without too much fan fare. I don’t care how Republicans try to spin this; history will forever record that it was President Obama who finally killed the alleged mass murderer who killed thousands of Americans on september 11, 2001. During the election candidate Obama made it clear that he was not opposed to all wars, but was opposed to dumb wars. He also made it clear that, if elected, he would focus on both Afghanistan and Pakistan. John McCain mocked him for his inclusion of Pakistan as his main focus.
To-days announcement, that Bin Laden was killed in Pakistan, vindicated the wisdom of this amazing President! Like it on not, President Obama has been one of the most focused presidents, in my lifetime, who has kept his promise on the issues he campaigned on. I am convinced that history will treat him better than the way he has been treated by the right and the holier than thou left and the MSM.

A lot of mixed emotions for me:
Ecstatic our military has completed a major objective.
Encouraged this is may be the beginning of the end of our war(s) in the Middle East.
Sad so many more lives were lost.
Distressed it has taken almost a decade to accomplish.
Relieved it was our President in charge when this goal was reached.
Pray the extremist network has been dismantled sufficiently to prevent retaliation.
I hope Cheney and McCain will choke on their words that they knew where Bin Laden was years ago.

My first thought when I heard was “can we go home now?”. I hope that will happen so we can get our troops home and regroup how to approach dealing with the remaining cells of Al Qaeda. Conventional warfare is not the way to fight this kind of enemy, as this operation has proven. Let’s invest in more human intelligence and save on heavy equipment. Anyway, congratulations to our Commander in Chief and the personnel who carried out his orders. W00t!

Just two years into his Presidency, Barack Obama has successfully completed his promise to capture and kill the number one terrorist enemy of the United States. And he was not in some remote cave as we were led to believe. President Barack Obama has always been underestimated by the GOP and some of his own base. This week alone, President Obama has put the birther movement to shame, visited the horrific tragedy in the southern states, comforted those in pain and loss, continued his trip to Florida even though the space shuttle launch was postponed, visited with the Arizona congresswoman recovering from gunshot wombs to the head and then while waiting on the results of this covert operation, he was able to roast Donald Trump and the rest of the usual suspects of the GOP with finesse before announcing the capture and killing of Osama bin Laden by the brave US forces who got the job done under his command. President Obama can WALK AND CHEW GUM AT THE SAME TIME!!! This entire country and the world should be proud on this day and forever in our history. God bless America!

I’m never glad to hear somebody was killed. I oppose the death penalty. I take a small vacation from that rule of mine today, like let’s say a vegetarian who will eat fish and enjoy it sinfully. Kudos mr president, that is a demonstration of how to preside.
On the other hand I have nothing against suicide, so if the shame is too much to bear, right-wingers can go for it I won’t try to stop ‘em.

For a while, this President gave the impression that he was too gentle and noble to be very effectual. Between how he handled Donald Trump and how he dealt with Osama bin Ladin, however, I have learned he can be a very dangerous man. If I were either Moammar Ghaddafi or any part of the Kochtopus, I’d be a lot more worried than I was twenty-four hours ago; as it is, I’m a lot more reassured.

As a very conservative American who votes Republican, I agree with most of these comments. Clinton missed as chance to get Osama, Bush had 8 years to get Osama but it took Barack Hussein Obama and Leon Panetta to get Osama bin Laden and it was a class act by President Obama on top of it all. The President graciously shared the moment with both Bill Clinton and George Bush and gave the best speech I’ve heard him give. I was proud to see President Obama give that speech and it was important for the American people to see Obama give that speech in light of all the discussions about his birth. Obama took heat from his own supporters in escalating the Afgan War which no doubt put more pressure on bin Laden and Obama alone directed Panetta to make it a priority to get Osama and personally authorized the hit. Now, if President Obama would secure our Southern Border (it is his job and the right thing to do)and enforce E-Verify without politicizing either, he would win re-election easily. I’ve been waiting to see if Obama will act as an Independent Leader and not just as head of the Democrat Party. This is a start. I’m proud to salute President Barack Hussein Obama on this great and unforgetable feat. Yes, he will always be remembered as the Man Who Got Osama bin Laden.
