The Obama Campaign Calls Out Gallup’s Deeply Flawed Battleground Women Poll
By: Jason EasleyOct. 15th, 2012more from Jason Easley
After Gallup released a poll showing Obama and Romney tied at 48% with battleground state women, the Obama campaign exposed a flaw in Gallup’s likely voter methodology.
The Obama campaign pointed out that Gallup’s likely voter survey was way off in 2010, “Only 2 years ago the distortions in Gallup’s likely voter screen were exposed, leaving Gallup’s survey 9 points off the mark just days before the election. Gallup’s likely voter model predicted a 15 point advantage for Republicans, 55-40, on October 31, 2010. The final result was a 6 point margin, 51-45. That year, Gallup’s registered voter survey was much closer to reality at 48-44.”
The Obama camp called the Gallup likely voter women battleground poll an outlier and said that in 14 polls in 8 battleground states since October 4, President Obama has led with women in every poll. In ten of the polls Obama held a double digit lead, and his average margin in all 14 polls is 10.2%.
Swing state polling chart:
The Obama campaign suggested that Gallup’s other polling was more accurate, but that there is a problem with the questions that Gallup uses to screen likely voters, “We believe the problem with Gallup’s outlying data is rooted in their 7 question likely voter screen, which distorts the composition of likely voters, leading to erratic and inaccurate results…Several of the likely voter questions create a bias against groups inclined to support Obama. For example, Gallup asks voters both whether they have voted in their precinct before and where people in their neighborhood go to vote. This creates a bias against registered voters who more likely to move from time to time, such as young voters, renters, minorities and urban dwellers, all of whom tend to lean toward the President.”
In general, the venerable polling firm has largely been out of step with the polling consensus in 2012. Unlike when the Romney campaign whines about polls, the Obama camp actually provided a methodological reason for their skepticism.
Since the election has tightened up, the Obama campaign is more sensitive to the perceptions caused by polling, but it is important to note that not all polls are the same. Too often, the media gives every poll equal weight when it shouldn’t. Some polls really are better and more accurate than others. Anyone who reads polling should do so not by focusing on one poll, but by looking at the overall picture presented by 5 or 10 polls.
Gallup’s recent track record over the last couple of years suggests that they are oversampling Republicans. Gallup has a ton of credibility because they are the founding father of political polling, but even legends make mistakes, and something smells fishy in Gallup’s latest women likely voter survey.

President Obama is right. Women I’m hearing from are mortified of what Romney promised he’ll do if elected regardless their party affiliation. Even GOP-leaning women think defunding Planned Parenthood alone is reason enough to oppose Romney.

I haven’t met a woman yet who thinks the Romney/Ryan plan for women’s health is good. I don’t know who they are polling but it sure isn’t NORMAL women.

It’s obvious that a poll can be skewed to deliver a desired result. Just the same, I can’t see why any SANE woman, or man for that matter, would vote for this fool with what we’ve learned about him. As the poet Maya Angelou has a saying to the effect that when someone shows who he or she is, believe them.

Designing an effective instrument (survey) to actually get real information can be extremely difficult, and involve a lot of hard work. Designing one to get the answers you want for political reasons – all they need to do is hire some quick-talking con artist who will do anything for a buck.
The junk that the Republican party has sent out (that we’ve gotten) was so bad that it wasn’t even a joke – so bad that I didn’t even find it funny. They must have been scraping the con-artist barrel and hiring the dregs. I could puke a better instrument than I’ve seen coming from RNC envelopes.
(I’ve gotten one or two Democratic ones over the years that were pretty bad too, but they were good enough to be funny. Others from my party have been OK, although even then some of those had rather leading language.)

The truth is, I know where our polling place is, but I’d have to look at my card to rattle off the number, especially since two precincts vote there. Certainly, when I first came here from Dade County, I changed my registration by the beginning of ’92, but I could not have casually told you my precinct or the place where I was to vote.

Maybe the women of America have succumbed to the undeniable charm of Willard Mitt Romney. Haven’t you all seen the goo-goo eyes (aimed at Paul Ryan), the leering smirks (aimed at President Obama), the manly aggression (aimed at any woman who dares ask him anything)? What red-blooded woman wouldn’t swoon over that? Besides, it’s his turn now. He shouldn’t have to wait until the afterlife to become the god of his own planet. You People need to bow down and recognize the power of the magic underwear.

The new ABC/ WaPo Poll averages 9 states. USA Today/Gallup averages 12 states? Really? 12
Okay, people, you can easily tell this poll is bullsh** by asking yourself the following question…when did Pennsylvania, Michigan, New Mexico and Wisconsin considered swing-states? New Mexico? C’mon….lmao

These polling companies need to find a way to account for people who: 1. Do not have time to take surveys. and 2. Only have mobile phones and no land lines. 3. Do not pick up unlisted or unknown calls. This polling data is skewed to the GOP who are mostly older Americans who have their ingrained voting preferences, old fashioned way of viewing the world and this country, retired with more time on their hands, more attention spans to participate in surveys, higher likelihood to pick up the phone regardless of who is calling.
This all spells higher polling numbers for the GOP, and does not reflect a younger electorate and their attitudes, beliefs and preferences.
This is actually a good thing for the Dems because they will work harder and raise more thinking they may lose than knowing they have this thing in the bag.

But I DO know women that are voting for Romney. They have been brainwashed into thinking that as Christians, they have to vote republican. I don’t understand it at all. They don’t like Romney, but they will never vote for Obama. When pressed for a reason I am ALWAYS told there’s something about him that just can’t be trusted. If I was to tell them the reason I suspect they don’t trust him is because he’s black- They’ll deny it, but eventually it kind of comes out that they just feel “safer” with someone like Romney in office…. Yeah.

I live in the uber liberal PNW, but have family back in Ohio. The women in my mostly conservative family have been dropping out of the GOP faster than the men. Why? Todd Akin. They finally saw the GOP for what it is, and are voting accordingly. We liberals/moderates really owe Todd Akin a debt of gratitude for telling the truth about how the GOP really thinks.

First of all, I do not for one second think that people change their minds by the hour or by the news cycle, much less by LIARS in a debate forum.
After Enron, how could ANYONE not believe these so-called “venerable” institutions cannot make giant errors or are flat-out SKEWING numbers to fit their agenda.
Anybody who cannot write a check for $10M right now is insane to vote REPIG.
WOMEN, Roe v. Wade will be 40 on January 22, 2013. DO NOT VOTE REPIG or you become chattel and powerless. Abortion is NOT a matter for the politicians, its HEALTHCARE.

I’m an Organizing For America volunteer, and am making calls this week to remind people about early voting. I’ve not talked to a woman since the DNC who’s voting for Romney, and I’ve talked to several women who have literally – and I do mean LITERALLY – cried at the thought of Romney becoming President.
If Romney wins, it will be because they cheated. It’s the popular thing to do with his crowd.

I think that the polls can be skewed by questions that are asked to lean towards one side. I am a woman and would never vote for the Republican platform for woman , and I really don’t believe many woman will. My vote has already gone to President Obama and I live in the swing state of Florida .

Exactly!! All these polls are so skewed and so untrustworthy. It’s like these pollsters think there is this huge swing from one day to the very next day. Like they think one night Romney leads by 7 then that very next morning they come out with like oh Romney now leads by 4, then by noon there’s another and oh wait Romney miraculously is up by 9. BS these idiot pollsters are so Repukians. Obama is clearly ahead, he hands down won the second debate. That’s another thing, like at the end of the debate, everyone new Obama slaughtered Romney but then a few hours later like CNN comes out and says oh the debate was tied. BS Obama won hands down no questions asked and debates hardly if ever swing votes that critically swing votes so dramatically.
Like very more realistically an accurate article this week said the debates basically haven’t changed much of anything and Obama is ahead like he was in September. They said yeah of course the first debate helped Romney a TAD… Keyword a little BIT but obviously nothing like Polls skew so much. Like Romney probably won like 6 or seven points and Obama is thankfully still far far ahead that Romney would have to win several key states with just under a couple weeks and pull something out of his ass. Isn’t going to happen. Thankfully Republicans are history!!

Obama does NOT have our backs, but Romney wants to stand behind us to get that knife so deep it comes out of our chests. Any person with even a smidgen critical thinking skills will know Obama has sold us out to the Insurance industry. Insurance is NOT health CARE! He only said they can’t turn us down for preexisting, he never once anywhere said they had to cover meds or treatment for that condition, and since we have to BUY health insurance BY LAW of course they can’t turn us down. Yet they still when since every man woman and child in America will have no choice but to purchase their health insurance no matter how much they charge and how little they cover. Gee thanks.

I have conservative women relatives who all blindly believe in Romney. They get their information from Faux news and there is nothing that will change their minds. But then again, if Romney said all men should slap their wives into submission, these women would agree. They get and spread the repug email lies amongst themselves and will listen to no one who has a different piece of information no matter how unlikely the charge. I guess they like being chattel. Scares me to death.

All these polls this year are totally skewed and totally not trustworthy. These pollsters are morons that they skew these polls so badly towards the Republicans and the samplings are so small. They think Romney was even in the second debate with Obama, they think the race is so close, they think women are still leaning with Romney even though Romney likes women in BINDERS, wants to repeal womens health care, basically strip away their rights, strip away their work rights. Obama clearly is obviously ahead and winning the essential states. Plus also these debates especially this last one doesn’t do much of anything to sway that significant of voters. Most people like 99% have already made up their minds and a lot have already early voted. Plus also Debates really don’t matter and swing that big of a turnover that polls suggest and make that big of a swing. Like one day polls say Romney is up by 6, the next morning he’s up by 2, that afternoon he’s up by 8, that night he’s up by 4. BS, who are this idiots doing this polls. There is no way your going to get that big of a swing. Pollsters are idiots!!
