Obama Devastates the GOP Argument for Extending the Bush Tax Cuts for the Rich
more from Jason Easley and Sarah Jones
President Obama was in rare form today as he anticipated every Republican argument for extending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy and destroyed them.
Obama debunked several false Republican talking points about his record on taxes. The president said, “Since I’ve been in office we’ve cut taxes for typical middle class family by 3,600 dollars. I wanted to repeat that because sometimes there’s misinformation out there and folks get confused about it.” The president also stated that he has cut taxes for the middle class in every year that he has been in office, and that we have tried the Republican trickle down method for over a decade and all it has gotten us is more income inequality and larger deficits.
The president also took away the Republican claim that not cutting taxes for the wealthiest Americans would hurt small business. Obama said, “We know what those who are opposed will say, we can’t tax job creators and they’ll say this is bad for small business. I’ve cut taxes for small business owners 18 times since I’ve been in office. I’ve also asked congress to pass new tax cuts for entrepreneurs who hire new workers. The proposals I’m making today would extend these tax cuts for 97% of small businesses. 97 percent fall under the $250,000 threshold.”
The president also called for extending the tax cuts to 98% of the American people, “Extend tax cuts for 98 percent of Americans who make less than $250,000 for another year. If Congress doesn’t do this, could see taxes up by $2,200 dollars. That would be a big blow to working families and a drag on the economy.”
Obama completely took the Republican argument away from them by stating the nation simply can’t afford to give tax cuts to the wealthy. He said that the tax cuts don’t help the economy, and they add to the deficit.
The president’s point that the tax cuts for the wealthy don’t create growth or help the economy flies in the face of the conservative fairy tale that tax cuts don’t add to the deficit, and they promote growth.
When it comes to tax cuts for the rich, Republicans are like Linus waiting for the Great Pumpkin on Halloween. They keep telling us that if we just keep believing and cutting taxes for the rich, prosperity will come to us all, but it never does.
You can expect Republicans to keep selling us the trickle down down Great Pumpkin myth, but Obama’s remarks were nothing less than a masterful destruction of every Republican argument for more tax cuts for the wealthy.
The White House would love to have this fight all summer. The Bush tax cut debate gives them a chance to use a very popular position against both congressional Republicans and Mitt Romney.
Obama made it clear that he has every intention of killing the tax cuts for the wealthy. Republicans have no hostages this time, popular opinion is strongly with the president, and Obama has told Congress to either send him a tax cut for the 98%, or prepare for a long and bloody summer.

The Republicans are falsely equating pass throughs with small business.
According to the Joint Committee on Taxation, only 3 percent of all “small businesses” paying taxes would be affected by Obama’s plan to lift marginal tax rates on families making more than $250,000 and individuals making more than $200,000.
That group about 750,000 taxpayers accounts for 50 percent of the estimated $1 trillion in business income reported in 2011.
The other 97 percent of “small businesses” shared the rest and under Obama’s plan, they would get to keep their Bush era tax cuts.

LOL
Sure. I guess if you’re a liberal shill or myrmidon who already believes the President’s lies, then this makes perfect sense.
On the other hand, if you’re bright enough to know you shouldn’t count the thousands of small business start-ups that don’t even last a year before going out of business, these tax increases are going to affect over 50% of all small businesses, and that’s going to have a MAJOR deleterious effect on the economy.
And seriously, is there ANYBODY left who doesn’t realize he has raised taxes on everybody, the poor and middle-class most of all in the form of increases in cigarette taxes, gas taxes, tanning-bed taxes, etc., etc., etc.?

I’m not a great fan of Obama – but it’s not his tax policies I object to. If you look at the market and the economy in 1980, when the top 10% payed twice the amount in taxes as it does currently, you’ll notice that the market was healthy and the economy was booming. The middle class was MUCH larger in the 80′s than it is now, due to the fact that America was both producing and consuming at higher capacities. The ‘corporations are people’ mentality has imbued so-called “conservatives” with the idea that “The big guys will ship even MORE jobs overseas, if they have to pay more taxes here.” I say, if they want to operate in China and Singapore, let them live there too. There’s more to life than profit.

You are the shill, my friend. You just reiterated the Fox meme on everything. Good job. Mu sister runs a ‘small business,’ and was whining all through 2008 that she would go under if Obama were elected. Well, guess what? Her business is thriving, and she has started two more. I have a sister who was going to be unemployed if ‘that socialist’ was elected, because she works for a small business…and she is not only still there, but she got a huge bonus last year. What is the right afraid of? That the middle class will exist again? And start spending money, which is the only thing that WILL jumpstart the economy?
As far as the gas and cigarette taxes, my guess is those are LOCAl, which had to happen because the GOP is atarving the federal government to death, which has cost states all kinds of bad things.

Yes, there are. Among those who live in reality. Obama cut taxes more than 18 times on small business owners. He also cut taxes for the middle class.
Obama repeatedly cut taxes for those earning less than 250k, “first through a tax credit in effect for 2009 and 2010, and beginning in 2011, through a reduction in the payroll tax that is worth $1,000 this year to workers earning $50,000 a year.” (from Factcheck.org)
By the way, the tax cuts he is proposing for the middle class impact most Americans, whereas only 2% stand to pay an additional 3% in taxes if we let the Bush tax cut for the rich expire. But we all know Republicans will fight tooth and nail for the 2%, while their own tax plan shows them increasing taxes on the middle class. Ah well. So dies another talking point.

I know how much CONS hate to help the poor but that was the purpose of the last Federal increase in the cigarette tax.
“On February 4, 2009, the Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009 was signed into law, which raised the federal tax rate for cigarettes on April 1, 2009 from $0.39 per pack to $1.01 per pack.[6][7] The purpose of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) is to provide aid for impoverished children”
In typical right wing nut job fashion you fail to mention the 18 times President Obama cut taxes for the middle income Americans or the fact that American corporations set records for profits in 2011. Neither one of these FACTS would further your right wing agenda and since they are actual FACTS they are difficult for a CON to mention let alone actually use in their narrative.
Adding to your list of lies is one of only 2 tax increases you mentioned before you bottomed out and resorted to the use of etc. etc. As if there are so many other tax increases that you couldn’t possibly mention all of them. Except the increase in the Federal gas tax NEVER HAPPENED! The Federal Gasoline tax has remained at 18.4 cents since 1993!
I actually feel sorry for people like you who are so brainwashed that you don’t even realize you are brainwashed. Your entire comment was one big lie about how the left is constantly spreading lies and that the left believes all the lies they are told by President Obama. In the real world, where people live in reality, the exact opposite is true. The American CONservative is the root cause of all our misery and the constant lying of the right winger does more harm to my great nation of United States of America than any foreign terrorist. If America is ever going to recover from the 8 years of Bush/Cheney then we must get rid of the GOTparty politicians and all Americans need to wake up! The middle income earning right wing CON in America needs to realize that they have been consistently lied to by their political leaders in order to convince them to vote, act and speak against their own best interests. WAKE UP JACK! People like you are destroying America.

C’mon, man, don’t talk stupid. Everyone, you included, knows that presidents don’t EVEN control such things as cigarette taxes and other local stuff. Is that really the best you can do? If so, that’s just flat pitiful.
I won’t bother to appeal to your common sense and tell you to wake UP. I suspect you’re a lost cause already. You’re he!! bent on believing the drivel you’re fed by Fox.

Hey, Jack, you have a life? cig taxes are nothing new. Hell, when I was a lad, they cost only 36 cents a pack. Most of THAT was taxes too! I can’t believe you seriously want to include tanning bed taxes, knowing as you must, (you SEEM intelligent, at first glance), how bad this is for your health! Hey if you’re gonna use a tanning bed, they SHOULD tax the hell out of you, ’cause if you’re that stupid, you’re not gonna live long enough to pay off your share of benefits used! hehe, I kid.
A little fact for ya, and most people know this, especially most small business owners. 50% of ALL small businesses fail in their first year, and it’s NOT because of taxes, but maybe, just maybe they didn’t know what they were doing, they didn’t offer a service/product people wanted, they overextended themselves from the start, etc. See where I’m going here? Your argument is best kept close to the vest, my friend! You’re gonna lose here, it’s inevitable! chuckle

I don’t really think blaming Obama for all tax increases that have come to pass this last decade is very realistic. Companies have become more and more shrewd with more concern for short term profits. The government has had to make some changes to the tax structure. I ca’tn hardly imagine that Obama himself is to blame for higher gas taxes, or a fee on tanning beds. A bombastic claim and nothing more. Might as well blame him for the weather, or a bad movie, or presence of dog poo on your lawn. “It was Obama’s fault!”

Taxes on cigarettes and tanning beds make more sense than raising the income tax rate for people making under 200K per year. Smoking and tanning are voluntary – paying income tax is not.

Actually the tax and deregulation reforms started by Carter and Reagan did provide a boost to the economy in the 1980′s but it wasn’t until President Clinton provided sound fiscal policy and common sense regulation that the economy really took off.
This of course was squandered by Bush 2 when he was appointed president by the supreme court. Trickle down theory from the 1920′s even though it has been disproved as a sustainable economic model was sold as gospel to the American people. The rest is history

in the mid 2000s, I played an MMO that was hosted on various servers, and the people whom ran their servers could customise the game to be played the way they wanted it to be played. The Neverwinter Nights world I played on at the time was being run by some control freaks not unlike the GOP is now. Our trickle down was experience points, and your higher level players got the big chunk of XP, and the lower level ones got a pittance, and wondered if they would ever get any stronger. Well, now that server is gone, and my character never got past level 10 there. The difference between these persistant “worlds” and our own is that we have to option to not play their game in the MMO. When it comes to the control freaks running our real lives, we can’t uplug from The Matrix. No matter where we go, someone is going to make sure we stay at those lower levels. It’s time to unplug from their game, and the sooner, the better.

He obama is again in this video is trying mind control over women, {showing all races of woman behind him looking on in complete stillness } he as the poor woman who just was murdered by obama who died just moments after the pressure of obama left her to continue his campaigning, and she died from exhaustion! He told women again that they are smarter than men, and are harder workers, and desired more, while he waited after woman put him in office, waited until just before the re-election bid, waited to tell all that woman is just not paided enough, or as much as men which is a lie, women are in all offices and management positions this day!
Never in the History of America has such shame been exposed of one trying to not just be elected but wants deep in his soul to be the first dictator of america, and is trying to set the stage for if not him, the dictator to come, by weakening the laws restraining those who hold the office of president! As all dictators from Hitler to Chavez obama’s mentor, they all get in office by promising the poor masses everything, while trying to gain control over the wealth of the rich! Then comes the media control, where the poor people who are murdered after finding out the truth and goal of the great dictators permeates the neighborhoods, but never the air waves! He obama has promised the gay control of all, women control of all, whites control and mexicans control and declares he desire to control! These men who never look at the future damage done by such promises, which is always the fall of the economy in any dictatorship, knowing their promises are for the end of the nation, and the rise of the first righted/Demi-god/Crat! For evidence our Lord has had enough go to the sites now mentioned…. It has begun
To view what causes gayness/homosexuality now found by science, yet has been know for many years, go to the about us page on the website at Adam and Eve seed gathering Ministry near the bottom of the page are many discussions and images of the unclean bacterial spirits that cause all unnatural acts of mankind/womankind from drunkenness to drug use, to harlotism to yes homosexuality! Also go for evidence our Lord the Great Physician who came long ago and told us we all had a disease called sin, go to the Prophecy and the signs page, and therein are the prewritten news events of this day, such as the Japan quake and tidal wave, and the DC/Virginia Beach Virginia quake our Lord Jesus brought on the same day martin luther kings statue was unveiled, as for many more signs that have come and are coming, the listed signs posted more than three years ago and more…. I haven’t read anything that bad in years. The worst was some discussion question answers I got from some undergrads a few years back… that were so incoherent that even my mentor and I together couldn’t quite figure out what they were trying to say (we both thought the students did the work while drunk) – that was possibly worse.
(Maybe a couple of beers would make it more legible… or at least I wouldn’t be feeling the pain as much. SIGH. The saying “if wishes were fishes”…)

Jack is like all republicans now. They kick and scream because they know they are wrong and always have been. The repubs will stone wall this until after Jan 1.
