Obama Must Fulfill His Oath Of Office Even If Republicans Don’t
By: RmuseJul. 31st, 2011more from Rmuse
There is a consistent theme to teabagger and Republican antics since the 112th Congress began their assault on America, and it is that they keep breaking their oath of office. It is interesting that at the start of the 112th session, Republicans and teabags held a reading of the Constitution and it seems they were all dead asleep and missed some very important amendments. For the record, every congressional representative and senator swears to, “Support and defend the Constitution of the United States.” It is a simple oath that should not require interpretation or any special reading of the Constitution in Congress, but apparently the conservatives need to have another reading so an 8th-grade student can point out the myriad ways they are breaking their oath.
In the 14th Amendment, Section 4, there is a little statement that puts the current debt ceiling debate into its proper perspective as well as expose how teabaggers are breaking their oath of office. In Section 4 it says, “The validity of the public debt of the United State… shall not be questioned.” Since Republicans, and especially teabaggers, want so badly to stick to a strict interpretation of the Constitution, they should be able to appreciate the simplicity of that one section. However, they have not only questioned the validity of the debt, they are willing to ignore it to send the country into default. In lieu of defaulting, they are using it to hold the economy hostage unless the government is reduced to no more than a war machine where the entirety of America’s assets are spent on producing bombs and bullets to kill Muslims. Of course, if there are any assets left over they are to be distributed to corporations, the oil industry, and the wealthy who warrant special privileges for their unwavering support.
The bigger issue besides raising the debt limit is the validity of questioning the public debt. The Republicans did not question the debt ceiling when George W. Bush was president and ran up the debt with two unnecessary wars and tax cuts for the filthy rich. In fact, they raised the limit seven times in eight years because the country could not afford giving the wealthy and their corporations tax cuts or two unnecessary wars. A big part of the debt we are wallowing in now is the interest on Bush’s credit card spending spree that suddenly warrants questioning because a Black man is in the White House. Some Republicans have admitted that it will be devastating to the economy if the debt ceiling is not raised, so they know how crucial it is to act, but they are not acting unless they get to eliminate social programs that affect a majority of Americans.
There are calls to the president to invoke the 14th Amendment and end the entire debate to save our economy, and if Republicans fail to reach a compromise, it is reasonable for Obama to follow the Constitution. There is a time and place for reaching agreements through compromise, but Republicans and teabaggers have no intention of giving anything in the way of concessions that would resemble a compromise, and in fact are upping the ante with calls for a balanced budget Constitutional Amendment. The idiot conservatives say they will agree to raise the debt limit after the balanced budget amendment is passed. It is another example of what happens when inexperienced, ignorant ideologues are given positions of power by more ignorant voters. It is apparent that teabaggers have little conceptual understanding of the steps and time it takes to put a new amendment in the Constitution. Of course it is entirely possible that they know exactly how long it takes and are hoping that by defaulting on the debt, the government will collapse waiting for three-fourths of the states (38/50) to ratify a balanced budget amendment. It is more likely that there is nothing the White House, Democrats, or even Republicans can do to satisfy the teabaggers unless they disband the federal government and install a Christian family values administration headed up by a fanatical Christian preacher.
It may well come down to the president following the Constitution and invoking the 14th Amendment to stop the country from defaulting on its debt. Invoking the Constitution would also stop the madness and devastation the conservatives are willing to wreak on the country just to end the most important features of the New Deal. President Obama has a Constitutional duty to support and defend the Constitution as well as the federal government’s existence. Americans now have a duty to impeach the representatives and senators who have blatantly broken their oath of office for various reasons, but none more important than deliberately questioning the validity of the public debt. It is not a mistake or an oversight, and each and every one of the lying debt-deniers swore to god to uphold the Constitution; not ignore it to collapse the economy and by extension, the government.
The President has gone far enough looking for compromise from the conservatives and by now he must have a clue that there is nothing more he can do to elicit cooperation short of disbanding the federal government, resigning, and appointing Bachmann or DeMint the Preacher-in-Chief. Neither Republicans nor teabaggers will ever agree to a balanced approach to the budget morass so there is little need for Obama to continue negotiating a debt ceiling increase. He owes it to the country, American people, and the Constitution to support it because if he does not, the teabags and Republicans will collapse the government and make a new Constitution called the Christian bible.
The Constitution’s writers thought they addressed every eventuality the country would face except a government collapse, and when teabaggers are finally successful, the Constitution will be unnecessary and by then, even the president’s oath will be meaningless. President Obama must lead and fulfill his oath even if every Republican and teabagger in Congress does not. It is not like conservatives have ever kept their promises, and based on their questioning the public debt, they have no intention of keeping their simple oath to support the Constitution. It is tragic the public is too timid to act on the oath-breakers, so once again we have to depend on the president to do the right thing for America. It is obvious that no Republican or teabagger will ever do the right thing even if it means keeping a simple oath.

2. Don’t Touch Social Security
3. Don’t Touch Medicade
4. Cut and Run in Iraq and Afghanistan / Slash the Defense budget by a 3rd.
5. Tax those fricken rich douchebags and go after corporations.
Fixed.
Why bother voting anymore, We are getting fucked in the ass no matter what we do because these people in office have no idea what we want and is always giving in to minority position and Rich People.
This makes me so angry.
44 Percent of the People in Congress is Millionaires. This is the greatest example of why the wealth gap is the way it is.

Oh responsible you all are! So what is the difference between you and the teabaggers? So bloggers know better than Constitutional scholars like Lawrence Tribe who clearly stated that the President has no grounds to invoke the 14th Amendment.

Hmmm… Difference between us and teabaggers; never mind. Doesn’t warrant an answer. “Public debt shall not be questioned,” cannot be any clearer in spite of a scholar’s argument. Especially one who admitted his guilt of plagiarism in 2004. But that is not important. You see, a teabagger doesn’t forgive like this writer (not a blogger). If you truly believe an American is irresponsible for proffering an opinion, then you sir, are probably the one who is a teabagger. There, now I do feel responsible…for being honest; another concept unknown to teabaggers. Thank you for commenting and reaffirming exactly what I am, and am not.

I can’t wait to see what is in the supposed agreement. Sen Reid and Rep Pelosi have repeatedly said no to cuts in SS, Medicare and Medicaid, as has POTUS. I think we all agree that Medicare and Medicaid need some work, not because they are bad programs, but because of the high cost of health care, so I don’t panic when these programs are discussed as needing work. Let’s trust our President.

Trust the PResident ,that is key!! He is worthy of our trust and capable of leading us through this mess. Darn the Right wing, darn the tea party , for being so political. but the Presidenr can and will lead us through.

The Right Wing legislators are upholding their oath… to Grover Norquist. I think that makes them, at a minimum, seditionists. The pity of it is that the Democrats are treating the “little people” of this country like Czechoslovakia at Munich, because they want peace. The Republicans, too, want piece… and another piece… and another piece… until they have gobbled up everything that belongs to America and her future generations. We can’t give it to them, and the President mustn’t give it to them.
Please, someone, furnish a working link to the White House.

ELECTIONS DO HAVE CONSEQUENCES as our TeaBagging friends pointed out after Obama was elected in 2008.
And because the Democrats stayed home in 2010, either because they thought the job was done or they thought Obama and the Democratic-led House weren’t “progressive” enough (OMG – there’s no public option!) or through sheer laziness, the Republicans elected 90-some odd TeaBaggers to the House.
And those “consequences” of the 2010 election are what we are suffering through right now. As much as I hate all – yes, that’s right ALL – Republicans, I have equal contempt for Democratic voters who let this happen. I’m being blunt here.
I am a life-long Democrat from a long-line of Democrats. I consider myself “progressive”, but I am also a political “realist”. When I read about the “disappointments” some Democrats have with the Obama administration, I have a small part that says, “Fuck you, idiots!”
These people who thought Obama would get into office and just wave his arms and all progressive ideas would be put into action were as stupid and deluded as their counterparts on the Right who thought Sarah Palin could do the same thing if SHE was elected.
We are now living through the “consequences” of November, 2010. With any luck, this debt ceiling problem will be resolved in the next two days and we can move on with an intact economy. BUT, if so, then we – the sane ones – have to come together and get those TeaBaggers out of office in Nov 2012.
And I swear that I won’t be able to control my temper in months going forward if I hear one more fucking whining Democrat moan about Obama’s lack of “progressive values” and the fact that he has to work with the other side.
DID I MAKE MYSELF CLEAR!!

I agree with you and I’m also a life-long and forever, Democrat. However, it has always been my experience that, voters don’t vote, until the Presidential election. They couldn’t tell you who their State Representatives are and don’t know how the Judges ended up in their positions. They couldn’t name all the Presidents and haven’t read the Constitution.
Elections are emotional. People vote when they feel the need not because of their Constitutional Rights.
Also, people of certain religions, do not vote. Their reason, they can only serve one person.

I keep getting angry when I think of Obama cutting SS etc, but we must remain conscious of the fact that he has out maneuvered the gop at every turn.
I think he knows what he is doing and has this mapped out. I think he is saying I wont use that to keep the smarter people in the gop wondering if they are about to lose everything. If the Pres pulls the 14th out of a hat, the GOP wil not get a single thing. And they shouldn’t anyways for pulling this stunt just to make the president look bad.
They threaten impeachment but its them that are open to that very word. By not raising the debt limit they are liable

I hear bloggers on the internet that he is a good chess player. I don’t know; I don’t play chess.
If he decides to use the 14th Amendment, I would stand behind him and protest, for him doing what is right for the Country.
On the otherhand, I would protest, if they decide to cut SS, Medicare, Medicaid, Education, etc.

They can be charged with treason and, without any doubt, the harm the Radical Republican Party has already done and are striving to escalate meets the definition of treason beyond any reasonable doubt.
The terror the Radical Republican Party has already inflicted on seniors, on those dependent on Medicare and Medicaid, on our Veterans and on our ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY exceeds any standard for treason.
One doesn’t negotiate with extortionists and terrorists – one indicts them and arrests them, at a minimum.

I totally agree with you, Bobfr, about treasonous Republicans. I also always appreciate your reasoned comments, here and on other pragmatic sites.
But seriously,Bob, from a practical stand point who would do the charging? The President? The Attorney General? Citizens like you and me? Are you absolutely sure that the courts, and especially the right wing Supreme court, would go along with your standards for treason?
By the way, who would you indict and arrest. The teabag caucus in the House of Representative? All the Republican members of Congress? The Republican leaders like Boehner, Cantor, McConnell and Kyle? be How long will it take to prosecute them in court? Let us even assume you can idict and prosecute them how long would that take? Would prosecuting these “extortionist terrorist,” save the country from economic catastrophe if the debt ceiling is not raised?
Look we are basically cooked! The country elected these crazy people. Other than those engaged in such crimes as bribery and other forms of corruption, members of Congress cannot be indicted, arrested, and prosecuted simply because they cast insane votes based on extreme ideology. Unlike the President and Judges, who can be impeached by congress, sometimes for frivolous reasons as was the case with Bill Clinton, Members of Congress enjoy extensive immunity from prosecution.
I think our focus should be on what is doable. In my judgement, the only way to deal with these crazy people is to seriously organize to defeat them the next time around so that they don’t continue to inflict damage on this country.

30 July 2011
Dear Mr President,
Given your decades of community service, your exceptional intellect, your palpable empathy and simply amazing-from-the-heart smile, it might appear to some that your pragmatic approach to complex issues, your willingness to treat the Congress as a co-equal branch of government with whom to build consensus through compromise are signs of weakness.
So often these past 2 1/2 years we’ve heard the braying of some on the left of ‘cave’ as you rather stunningly achieved one legislative, often historical, victory for all Americans. Those legislative victories have already proven a bounty to our economy, to the health and inalienable rights of our fellow citizens, and more. In the face of it you demonstrate yet another obvious trait – humility.
But, you’ve also done a few things that should have alerted the dimwitted extortionists in the Republican Congress and their monied enablers.
You ordered a daring rescue of a hostage – Captain Richard Phillips.
With remarkable speed and minimum deference to those whom certainly would have caused delay, you built an alliance and issued the necessary orders thereby saving thousands of Libyans certain death and launching them on their path to self-determined freedom from a tyrant and terrorist.
And then you took out Osama bin Laden.
Through those acts you demonstrated something those that should have been paying attention, still haven’t.
It is crystal clear that when you are confronted with a colossal catastrophe in the making or a highly complex, ultra-dangerous task, you will work diligently to gather the facts and then you will take decisive action.
You know the history of Section 4 of the 14th Amendment.
You know that we have a group of individuals in the Congress prepared to cause irreparable harm to our Republic by defaulting on our debt. The harm would make the economic aftermath of 9/11 and the GBW recession of 2008-2001 look like hiccups. Way beyond the immediate and long-term economic disaster, the credibility of the USA would be defunct.
For radical Republicans and their enablers it’s a three-fer: roll back the past 60 years of our social compact, protect the wealthiest few, and damage the black guy’s chances of re-election.
That must not happen. Extraordinary, unprecedented, totally predictable damage requires extraordinary, definitive preventive action.
Mr President, based on your performance, not your words, we are fortunate that you are President, today. In the next 48 h you will, once again, need to remind the Republican hostage takers not to mess with you and the Republic that you serve with exceptional courage, intelligence and decisiveness.
Thank you,
Bob
31 July 2011
Dear Mr President,
I wrote you a longer letter yesterday on the topic of a Radical Republican Party, a party that could not possibly achieve the harm to our social compact, our economy and our global status through any normal legislative or political process.
So, that Radical Republican Party is now attempting to normalize extortion in the legislative and governing process.
We now know with certainty that they willingly, in cold blood, would rather destroy our economy and our credibility in order to achieve their singular objective – protect the wealthiest few from any societal responsibility.
We are fortunate you are President at this time because I have every reason to believe you will not compromise with extortionists – extortionists blatantly violating their Oath of Office and terrorizing all Americans by their actions.
Please exercise your Constitutional authority and halt the extortionists.
Thank you,
Bob

Bobfr, I like your excellent letter. My only problem is your last sentence in the second letter:”Please exercise your Constitutional authority and halt the extortionists.” Contrary to the hype, the President’s authority to invoke the 14th Amendment is extremely problematic. Under the Constitution (Article I, Section 8) Congress has the sole power over the purse. I am not sure things would be better off if we move from the drama of raising the debt ceiling to the drama of impeachment. I know many people think the Supreme Court will side with the President. But after what the Court did in “Bush v. Gore” and the “Citizens United,” I don’t trust this court if it sees an opening to help Republicans impeach the President. Personally, I think the entire Republican party, and not not just the teabaggers, has gone crazy. It’s consumed with trying to bring President Obama down by any means necessary.
