Obama Plays Netanyahu Like a Fiddle, Romney Follows Behind
By: Sarah JonesSep. 28th, 2012more from Sarah Jones
Obama and Netanyahu talked today, and agreed that Iran shouldn’t have nuclear weapons. Romney raised his hand to announce that he also talked to Netanyahu, but can’t tell us what was said and then reiterated Obama’s Iran policy as his own. This comes as no surprise, since Romney has repeatedly proven himself to be a foreign policy novice — to put it kindly — and Obama’s foreign policy approach is more popular, both at home and abroad.
The media has been all atwitter with right wing talking points, why won’t Obama talk to Netanyahu? Somehow they missed that by schooling Netanyahu with the diplomatic but clear cold shoulder, Obama got everything he wanted.
On Tuesday at the UN, Netanyahu suddenly announced after relentless sabre-rattling that Israel would not attack Iran before the spring, taking off the table the pre-election strike that loomed behind his earlier words, when he falsely equated violence in Libya with the “regime” in Iran in an attempt to stoke the fires of war. Netanyahu also agreed with Obama that a diplomatic approach might work. This was a long walk from where he had been just days before.
Whether Netanyahu started showing respect for Obama because, unlike most conservatives, he can read polls or whether Obama’s cold shoulder finally sank in as Bibi’s only option given Romney’s plunge, or some combination of the two — the end result is Obama got what he wanted and what was best for the United States.
Obama got Netanyahu to back off his threats to attack Iran and he got Netanyahu to stop meddling in US elections. Netanyahu gave Obama credit for leading the effort to impose sanctions on Iran.
Netanyahu still did his best to tie himself to fellow conservative war hawk Mitt Romney, and if polls start to shift, I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts sabre-rattling even more furiously. For now, there’s no doubt Netanyahu read the writing on the wall, as papers around the world were blaming him for jeopardizing Israel over his treatment of the US President. He made a wise decision to least stop appearing to be playing election war games.
Romney said he and Netanyahu discussed where the “red line’ ought to be drawn, but Romney doesn’t feel comfortable discussing it. Romney then declared that he thinks we can handle Iran without military action, but he’s not taking it off the table. If those words sound familiar, it’s because they are President Obama’s standard reply. At the U.N., the President took on Iran, saying that while the U.S. remains committed to a diplomatic solution on Iran’s nuclear program, “time is not unlimited.”
Romney has long criticized Obama for not taking a harder line against Iran, though there is no harder line than the tough sanctions Obama has already put into place, other than military action. Yet, Romney would not go there. So, how does his policy differ from Obama’s? He won’t say, other than to claim Obama’s position as his own and announce it as the correct one.
Today, Romney took Obama’s approach of tough sanctions and Detroited it, claiming that it was his idea and he’s glad Obama is finally on board. Romney told reporters on his plane, “From the very beginning, I thought crippling sanctions needed to be put in place. Part is to see action as opposed to just words. His words more recently are more consistent with the words I’ve been speaking for some time, and we’ll see what actions he pursues.”
We don’t need to wait to see what Obama does; he has already instituted far more strict sanctions on Iran than President Bush.
It was Mitt Romney who told rich supporters that he would do nothing about the Middle East because he didn’t think peace was possible. His big plan, he told them, was to kick the can down the field. “I look at the Palestinians not wanting to see peace anyway, for political purposes, committed to the destruction and elimination of Israel, and these thorny issues, and I say there’s just no way.” He continued, “You hope for some degree of stability, but you recognize that this is going to remain an unsolved problem… and we kick the ball down the field and hope that ultimately, somehow, something will happen and resolve it.”
Romney then admitted that while he had been told of a possible prospect for a settlement between the Palestinians and the Israelis after the Palestinian elections, he didn’t pursue it.
So, no on peace efforts and yes on war with Iran. Remember when Romney sold his base on an inevitable war with Iran, back when he was selling Glenn Beck’s crazy Muslim caliphate conspiracy?
Watching Romney try to morph into Obama on every single policy after he spent a year telling us that Obama is wrong on everything is just painful. This isn’t Romney’s first go at this either. In Israel on his foreign policy debut tour, his foreign policy adviser Dan Senor previewed Romney’s “foreign policy” speech, saying that Romney would “respect” Israel in a decision to use military force against Iran.
Hours later, Romney walked those comments back, and once again, reiterated President Obama’s stance.
Backtracking on his aide’s announcement of full support for military action against Iran under Romney — specifically he was asked if he was “giving the green light to bomb Iran” — the presumed Republican nominee said, “I’ll use my own words and that is I respect the right of Israel to defend itself and we stand with Israel. We’re two nations that come together in peace and that want to see Iran being dissuaded from its nuclear folly.”
Mitt Romney will, it seems, say anything to anyone to get them to like him, including parroting the President on Iran, the auto bailout, and the poor even as his policies do the exact opposite. Mitt Romney is like a silly puppy chasing Obama, yapping criticism the entire time — even as he copies Obama’s words. This truly has to be an epic embarrassment for establishment Republicans, if indeed they have any pride left.
President Obama artfully and diplomatically manipulated Netanyahu, and firmly reestablished the division of power and authority. Cut to Mitt Romney chasing behind, carrying a bomb in one hand and copy of Obama’s foreign policy in another.

When he gets his genitals handed to him, romney and the repugs will blame Obama for being mean and disrespectul of romney. He’ll cry to Fox to lambaste Obama for attacking romney with no reason to except that he is desperate to win. Mitt has nothing to say that hasn’t been debunked as a lie. As a matter of fact if romney actually told the truth about anything, you would only hear crickets before Obama lands the Cassius Clay-like fatal blow to Sonny (glass-jaw) Liston.

Am still afraid if Romney wins by cheating there will be a civil war here or Romney will start one in Iran. God save us from the republican party. I hope he really looses the election and the republican party fight to take their party back from the brink of hell. We need a 2 party system. Good ideas from both sides. Bring back moderate and liberal republicans.

Hopefully all of this mess will split the republican party and keep them out of power for a long long time, they took the country to the edge of destruction and we never want to see that again.
Warmongering is a thing of the past , hopefully, and Obama with his strategy on Israel and Iran is what needs to be promoted , more so than the Republican call to just start another war in the middle east which America can most definitely not afford, either financially or socially, there are just too many soldiers that are starting to question what they are supporting by being in the army, a soldier really does need to believe in what he is fighting for, and questions are arising all the time, and on top of that with the amount of time some of the soldiers have spent in the middle east , they are just exhausted psychologically , that is why we see the rate of suicides so very very high.
America needs time to repair the damage the wars have done at home before starting another one.

Bibi is a bully with a bad case of Napoleon complex. You can see it in the video clip of him meeting Romney. He tries to be the top dog from the first minute, and succeeds because Romney is a socially awkward person who is used to operating in the same milieu. Obama is not. He doesn’t work in that mode, so Bibi doesn’t know what to do with him. Obama never uses two words where one will do, or one where none will do. He brought the Egyptians around by the very subtle expedient of pointing out that Morsi had taken no steps to claim the status of “ally.” He brought Bibi around by refusing to meet with him and making it clear who occupied (and would likely occupy for the next four years) the White House.

Our President is a tried and proven diplomat, very quick minded, and nimble. Ole Mitt will find himself out debate. Left standing flat footed.

Its funny how Mittens blames Obama for the muslim brotherhood being elected in Egypt. Was Obama supposed to step in and stop their elections? Did Romney think Egypt would NOT elect a muslim?
Romney cannot talk about foreign affairs. He is out of that game

But you cannot trust N to stand by his words. The only gift in this is that Israel cannot act militarily at Tehran without American help. You can thank the American Jewish community for this one. Netanyahu’s playing the Israel card found them shaking their heads and supporting the POTUS. That must have been a truly bitter pill for Zionist Netanyahu to swallow. Romney is no pet puppy to Obama. His change is based on the same communications that Netanyahu received. Netanyahu’s home base problems played a role as well. Israel is no longer 100% Zionist, they are not stupid and they do follow a faith best stated in Micah and Isaiah (Look it up.) which looks to Israel to become a beacon of peace. I think Obama gets it, at least partially. Netanyahu and Romney, like the American Christian right wing evangelicals do not–may never.

Our first response to issues like this cannot be military strikes or launching full scale wars. We need to try and solve problems diplomatically; we can’t bomb the whole world.
Actual statesmen understand this and that is the type of person we need in the White House. While I don’t agree with Pres. Obama on some things as it relates to foreign policy, I trust him to do the right thing more often than not, and to not act too hastily. Romney/Ryan will have us mired down in Iran in a heartbeat should they steal – I mean win – the election. They’re dangerous – to the middle class, the poor, and the world.

I agree with much of what has already been said. Romney has never shown any interest in the complex issues facing the world. He is totally out of his depth and should be very careful about talking with world leaders about US policy. He is not the president and he is not likely to be the president. To usurp presidential privilege and be utterly used by Netanyahu is another indication of his naivete and that he has no clue about the high stakes nature of foreign policy.
I am constantly amazed at the duplicity of republicans as they scream for democracy in the world then chafe at the results when they do not meet their expectations. Or their two faced adminition of the president his very quiet statesmanlike support of democratic movements during the Arab Spring- The party of ‘of the few, by the few; for the few, is quick to wrap themselves in the flag and pronounce our form of democracy as the answer to all of the ills of the world while avoiding any real legislative responsibilities…who in the world would listen!
But, Obama needs to address his own failings and admit that he has engaged in Bushian type unilateral mass killing with drones; the indefensible practice of indefinite internment without due process; and a weak, oh well, what can you do approach to a recalcetrant, irresponsible republican congress. He needs to man-up and return us to the high ground we no longer inhabit. How on earth can an American president ‘school’ the world regarding compassion and humanity! Come on!
Netanyahu needs to be very careful about meddling in our internal politics. Obama is doing him a real favor by not lambasting him publicly. This country needs to stop unquestioned support for any country that acts in the manner Israel has with regard to the Palestinians and their future in what must be a two state solution.
In short, Obama has fallen way short of his early pronouncements about a new American century; but, Romney has absolutely NO clue from the start.

Israel has been a bully for decades. Palestine had their homeland stolen. If not for massive infusions of American arms, the two sides would have settled it long ago.
N is the latest iteration of the schoolyard bully dependent on doting parents to get away with hurting others.
The Prez is finally calling them on it.
