61% Of Voters Blame Republicans Not Obama For The Recession
By: Guest ContributorJun. 28th, 2011more from Guest Contributor
Buried in the latest McClatchy/Marist poll was an interesting nugget. Although Americans are upset about the economy, 61% of those polled still think that Obama inherited the recession.
According to the poll Obama only has a 37% approval rating on his handling of the economy. He scores even worse on the issue of the deficit with a 61% disapproval rating, but his favorable rating remains at 50%, and when asked if the economy is his fault, or he inherited it, 61% of those polled expressed the belief that the president inherited the economy.
While the first two numbers should give the Obama campaign cause for concern and the second number will be the likely reason why any deal to raise the debt ceiling will also involve spending cuts, it is the last two numbers above that pose the biggest problem for Republicans ahead of 2012.
Recently, Howard Kurtz wrote that Mitt Romney’s campaign strategy is to lay low, and make the economy the central issue of 2012. (One does have to question how successful Romney will be at convincing America of his economic expertise, when voters find out that he made his name in business by buying troubled companies, gutting them, and laying people off).
The hurdle that Republicans face is the widely held perception that Obama inherited their economic mess. This belief has held true with over 60% of those polled since Obama took office. It has been a fairly unshakable piece of data across the polls that have asked the question. Should the 2012 election revolve around the economy, voters have to decide if they are willing to put the party back in the White House who they feel is responsible for this mess.
It is still early and the numbers can lie, but Republicans have had little success attaching ownership of this economy to Obama since he took office. Most Americans personally like this president, and as a candidate, he is the best campaigner in the country. No Republican in the current field can match Obama’s power on the campaign trail.
Republicans also aren’t going to be able to match his spending. Republicans have been trying for years to use the economy as the means of attack on Obama’s likability. They are hoping that if the American people see Obama as the person to blame for the economy they will elect any Republican, even Mitt Romney.
Romney is running the same strategy that John Kerry used when he tried to unseat George W. Bush in 2004. The flaw in the blame the other guy campaign strategy is that it isn’t enough to convince voters that the opponent is bad. The candidate must also give voters reasons why they would be better, and this is where every Republican challenger is going to struggle against Obama.
All of the Republican presidential candidates are offering economic remedies that are straight out of the George W. Bush playbook. They are going to make it easy for Obama to paint them as the return of W, and since a majority of Americans blame Bush and the Republicans for the economy, you can see where this goes.
If Republicans fail to change the perception that the president inherited this economy, Obama will win a second term.
Usually the central question in presidential reelection campaigns is does the incumbent deserve a second term, but the central question in 2012 may be, who do you trust with the economy?
Unless Republicans can change some minds, voters are more likely to trust Obama with a second term than to put the GOP back in charge.

Shameless!
The Poll is good– but more effort needs to be given to get the word and facts out!

It is encouraging that there are many Americans who see through the transparent efforts of the GOP to regain political dominance by selling the lie that the president is responsible for the economic problems, while they make every effort to block any attempts on his part to fix things. But the important thing is for this to translate into voting the regressive Blue Dog Democrats and the Republicans out, or keep from voting them in to begin with.

Then I wonder why they voted in Republicans to “fix” the economy?

It looks like a number of Americans who voted in Republicans for that purpose are suffering an acute case of buyers’ remorse, as it is increasingly obvious that they couldn’t care less about fixing the economy.

Obama and the Democratic Congress of 2008 won largely in part due to the high voter turnout, and the abnormally high turnout of young voters.
Republicans usually win when voter turnout and youth turnout is low.

Generally, mid-term elections have much lower turn-out and are dominated by the parties’ base. The base in 2010 were much more fired up for the Republicans than for the Democrats. The election didn’t really say “Americans voted Republicans” as it said “Republicans voted”.

Because they did not get a hard enough ass kicking by the recession. Should Republicans regain control, we will have a depression that will make 1932 look like a Sunday School Picnic! Maybe that is what the American People need to knock some sense into their thick skulls to realize Republicans are liars on everything and just NO DAMN GOOD!

Time to get out the talking points. Can they top “the government take over of health care, death panels for grandma”?

Time for Democrats and Independents to stand up! The hypocrisy of the GOP is alarming, and false statements need to be clarified and corrected. I am astounded that the GOP is willing to risk the security of our entire nation because they hate the President and refuse to work with him. The entire Republican party needs to have remorse for what they have done, and start to work to help correct their ideological mistakes.

It seems to me that the democrats took over the senate and congress RIGHT before our economy took a dump all over itself. The Republican President caved to the political pressures of the legislative branch of government… you know, the Reid Pelosi branch? These were the guys who have not been able to a budget in 730 days now. Yeah, those guys… They were the ones calling the shots just before and as the economy took a nose dive, so 6 trillion dollars of national debt later I feel quite justified in blaming them.

Go for it, as long as facts don’t matter to you. But if you care about the facts, you need to get a little deeper than that. However, if you’re just playing team sports — have at it.

The Dems were the ones that took us to war and gave us that huge deficit, and gave us the Bush housing entitlement scheme that for the most part caused much of the mortgage losses along with the deregulated banking industry.. Yes, I can see it now, the dems did all of it because the Republicans are never responsible for anything.

The Federal Reserve breathes a sigh of relief and prints some money to throw to the media to keep up the charade that one party or the other can influence the economy, keeping the blame away from the central planning committee at the Federal Reserve. Americans truly are deprived of honest media.

I hear that in Canada it’s actually illegal to lie in the News or something similar. We need that in the U.S.

Yes, it is true that in Canada it’s illegal to knowingly state false information in News shows. However Harper (the prime minister) has tried time and again to “remedy” this. Now that he’s got a majority government though, it is likely he will try again…..

All the bickering aside,we need to elect someone that can balance a check book and not another politician liar that steals our tax dollars. We all need to stand together and get our country back on track.

I was just struck by something McClatchy did that was VERY sneaky…
For the first couple of years of Obama’s presidency, the Dems and the media (redundancy alert) would ask if the economy was due to Obama’s economic policies or GEORGE W. BUSH’S economic policies…
Beating up on Bush gave Obama cheap points…The “It’s not MY fault…I blame the other guy” routine…
That might’ve worked for a year or two, but that line is getting old and people are starting to get sick of hearing “Bush’s fault! Bush’s fault!” over and over again…
So what do they do?…They STOP saying “GEORGE W. BUSH’S economic policies” and change it to “THE REPUBLICANS’ economic policies”…
The actual recession started when the DEMOCRATS controlled both houses of Congress, and the Dems and the media (redundancy alert) couldn’t have that pointed out, so they attacked the ONE branch that had Republican control…The presidency…
But that control is gone…Been gone for over 2+ years now…So that fish don’t swim no more…
The enemy needs to be changed…and what better way to help the Chosen One stay chosen than changing the BLAME of the economy from the person that isn’t going to do anything hurtful to Democrats in the next election to a whole GROUP of people than CAN?…Everyone with an “R” at the end of their name?…
So we’re going from “One Republican to blame while the majority controlled houses of Democrats are squeaky clean” to “EVERY Republican to blame while the majority controlled houses of Democrats are squeaky clean.”…
Pretty slick…Pretty devious…SOP..
