Obama’s Odds of Reelection Increase After Romney’s Acceptance Speech
By: Jason EasleyAug. 31st, 2012more from Jason Easley
How bad was Mitt Romney’s acceptance speech? According to Intrade, the odds of Obama being reelected have increased from 55.7% before the speech to 56.8% after.
Bloomberg reported that, “The odds that President Barack Obama will be re-elected on Nov. 6 rose to 56.8 percent after the Republicans concluded their nominating convention, according to online prediction market Intrade. Obama’s odds, at 10:21 a.m. New York time, compared with a 43.3 percent chance for a victory by Republican nominee Mitt Romney, according to bets made at the Dublin-based bookmaker. Obama’s chances increased from 55.7 percent yesterday, while Romney’s dropped slightly from 43.4 percent.”
Anyone looking for a big bounce in support for Mitt Romney after that speech probably shouldn’t be holding their breath. The speech was an underwhelming disjointed mess with no theme, no vision, and at times seemingly no idea where it was going.
Mitt Romney’s speech was essentially a longer more drawn out version of his stump speech. If you have heard Romney speak in the last five years, then you’ve heard this speech before.
But it takes a special kind of fail to give a national address, and see your opponent’s odds of success increase.
The lowered odds on Romney highlight his main problem. The more voters see and hear from him, the less they like him.
This phenomenon presented itself first during the Republican primary. In state after state, the more Romney campaigned, the more his approval numbers dropped. His numbers experienced a bit of an uptick after he clinched the nomination and got off the campaign trail, but his first big step on the national stage revealed same underwhelming and unlikable Romney.
Mitt Romney not only failed to redefine his campaign, but he may have hurt himself with voters. In a bad economy, voters are always open to the idea of tossing out incumbents, but it is up to the challengers to make the case that they can do a better job. Mitt Romney didn’t do that.
It is doubtful that there will be a tidal wave of Romney support in the next set of polls. No one should be surprised if Romney gets zero to minimal bounce out of his convention. Romney may have been harmed by the fact that convention forced him into a shotgun wedding with the unpopular Republican brand. He may have been dinged by the fact that Clint Eastwood yelling at furniture was the most memorable moment of the convention, but mostly the problem was Mitt Romney.
The Republican nominee demonstrated once again that he is over matched by the big stage. If the impression that Romney left in Tampa helped Obama today, imagine what is fallout might be when these two men are standing by side at the presidential debates.
Only Mitt Romney could hurt his odds of victory by showing up at his own convention. The one thing working most in Obama’s favor as he campaigns for reelection is that he is running against Mitt Romney.

And what is it with nominees thinking that their families will help? Mitt already should know that Anne hasn’t done him much good in the pols – especially with the “you people” comment. Her finger wagging “now listen to me” admonition in her speech didn’t help.
Michelle? She’s a strong woman with skills. Mad skills. I’d listen to her more than Anne, but yet we don’t hear from her much. Love Michelle. Would like to hear more from her.

“The lowered odds on Romney highlight his main problem. The more voters see and hear from him, the less they like him.”
Which is saying something considering that most people – including Rupert Murdoch – didn’t like him to begin with.

I couldn’t help but wonder what the average voter must have thought watching/listening to Eastwood’s standup, vaudeville routine, and then Willard’s drifting pack of lies. It certainly did not look like a serious group of politicians one would trust to run the country. An angry bunch of white racists, maybe, but nothing remotely resembling a party with solutions, or willingness to lead.

Nate Silver (fivethirtyeight.blogs.nyt...) actually has the president at a 71.6% favorite and rising. Mitt was an epic failure last night and I was giddy to see crazy Clint Eastwood take away all of his thunder! Who in the hell is running that campaign?

You Repugs are not stealing this election CON Heart no matter what dirty tricks you attmept to pull.
The Grand Old Party can lie and race bait all you want as that is all you have is negative energy and it will not buy you the WH. The GOP has no new ideas and we’ve seen the trickle down theory movie starting with Reagan.
When all the truths are revealed about the lies the American people have been told, Obama will cruise to his reelection victory.
What brand of beer do you like to cry in??

I’m still waiting for polling re: Eastwood’s performance. Did anyone not at the convention think anything other than WTF?!? Besides, at a convention the spotlight should be on Willard, in this case. That people are only mentioning Willard in the context of a messed up convention he ran isn’t good.

I watched clints speech. i have always been a fan (he reminds me, and sounds like, my dad) I am a liberal, and i think he came off as a moderate righty, the whole meme about him talking to the chair is rather lame, as it was obviously a comedic affectation. the real zinger is that he didn’t slam the left as hard as the campaign probably would have liked, and he made those comments about the ads, that seemed more aimed at mittens ads than obamas. but i don’t think he was totally lame, but dang, he is getting old. i think he lost his place a time or two.

I so agree! with you Deborah, you said it all! because God help us, if Rommey and his cronies take over! As a matter of fact we need to get rid of all them repukes! that, right from the beginning of Obama’s term, they made the decision to not respect this man as our leader, or work with him to help him accomplished what he wanted to do for the American people, well he has accomplished a lot! ( that they lie about )and talking about what he has not done..They gave that Bush eight years, to drag us in the ground! and expect Obama, to clean that mess up! in less than four years! Really!! Give me a break!

I’m tired of hearing all the lies. I want reality. I’m tired of the obstructionism going on in congress. I want to see some real meaningful action from our leaders. As for Romney give him enough rope and he will hang himself without anybody’s help.

Dear Mitt,
You got the convention behind you now…
How about getting the past 10 years of “complete” Tax Returns released so “Us People”, the “Simple Minded” ones can see who you really are.
No Tax Returns, No Vote.
It’s real simple!

While I had the same take on Eastwood that you did, I was sitting in a restaurant in Wilmette, Illinois listening to 2 seniors (I’m one too) at the next table talk about how Eastwood was so great. And they loved Romney’s speech. They were undecided and waiting to hear to hear how Obama would do at the DNC. But they kept talking about how much money Romney gave away. They discussed the story about how Romney cooked a Thanksgiving dinner for a needy family and how that made him a kind, compassionate man. These were middle class ordinary voters. It was scary to hear the things they focused on and the conclusions they drew. I wonder how many other folks who are somewhat off the radar are doing the same thing. Scary thought.

The debates are a joke. The post-debate commentators spin them any way they want. I remember the Bush/Gore debates. Gore had obviously mopped up the floor with Bush, trapping him with questions he couldn’t answer, making him bluster with those deeer-in-the-headlights look and generally just showing Bush for the idiot he was. But, no, the commentators tore Gore apart for being “wooden.” They critcized him for sighing. They said Bush had “held his own” because the bar of expectations had been set so low for him, anything less than a total meltdown was a positive.
Then you had Palin. She never answered any question when she was debating Biden. She’d sidestep ever question the mod asked and go off on a tangent, over and over, with talking points about “free enterprise,” “liberty” “our forefathers” “our freedoms” “our family values”, and that eyerolling with “Joe, Joe, Joe.” She never answered one question, just went off on the same talking points ceaselessly and the mods called the debate a draw–even with that disgusting winking.

Why are they/Fox such hypocrites. Unbelievable.

I looked up Clint’s speech after the fact; couldn’t stomach more than a few seconds here and there of Tampa’s Lie-A-Palooza. Boy, that didn’t help….
I’m looking forward to the debates; either Romney shows up and gets his ass handed to him, or he skips and loses by default. Either way, I see 4 more years!

I hope You People see thru Clint’s speech. It wasn’t about politics it was Clint drawing attention to himself cause of his new movie coming out. It was a mere PR stunt no different than any Celeb. Do you really think an 82 year old man is going to fly across the country for a five minute speech?

The debates are judged on style, not on content. Obama has, hopefully improved his style and appears to have more gravitas. The trick will be to keep Romney off script. Romney will go for the slow Regan-like cowboy, their team is no doubt working on a line like “there you go again.” They might just have him practicing that one. I am really afraid if Romney gets in. Enjoy the internet and free expression while you can. The gestappo might soon come a-knockin’.

I dont think the debates are going to be the deciding factor either. I agree that the pundits after debate dont often paint a valid picture of the debates. The questions themselves are usually kind of lame and the follow up to really pin the candidate down is lacking. Mitt only had to try and appear to be the most right wing during the debates of the primaries and not make a fool of himself. The stakes are higher here and Obama thinks fast on his feet unlike Ronmneys former debate contestants. The moderators in my opinion are usually pro republican.I hope Romney does alot of prep work and mock debate practice as I see a possible embarassment. Also will be interesting to watch how Ryan does. The media has played him up as the intellectual of the Republican party but Im guessing he s almost as much of a fake as Palin was.
