The Buckeye State Gives the Koch Agenda A Big Black Eye

Ohioans Protest Governor Kasich calling him the Joker
Today, Ohioans served Republican Governor John Kasich some of his own medicine, rejecting his offer to negotiate with them on Senate Bill 5 (the bill that killed collective bargaining rights). They told him the time for talking was over.
We Are Ohio has taken the people’s fight all the way back to the ballot box to the chagrin of Governor Kasich. The anti-union bill (S.B. 5) that he rammed down the throats of Ohioans in spite of daily protests (hello, Scott Walker) is being put on the November ballot after 1.3 million Ohioans signed petitions to put the vote before the people. Kasich is now begging for “compromise” from the legislature in order to avoid the harsh judgment of the actual people he serves.
In other words, Kasich refused to talk to the workers when he was passing the law – he even locked the doors to the state house. But now that they have brought the bill to the people, getting more than a million signatures for the referendum when they only needed 231,000, and thus managing to get it on the ballot to be voted on, suddenly Kasich is willing to deal — but not with the people. Oh, no. He wants to keep this between the legislators and the Governor’s office, where he has a chance of saving his union killing bill with some minor tweaks.
Luckily, Ohioans aren’t falling for that Trojan Horse. Rejecting Kasich’s too little too late offer to talk, Senate Minority Leader Capri S. Cafaro, D-32 Hubbard said, “Kasich and Republicans in the General Assembly “have finally admitted that they went too far” but that “it has taken too long for them to acknowledge they overreached” with the legislation.”
And in case that wasn’t clear, Melissa Fazekas, a spokeswoman for We Are Ohio, the coalition leading the repeal drive, spoke at a press conference yesterday and explained that the GOP has a choice: They can repeal S.B. 5 on their own, or wait for the referendum on the ballot this November. AFL-CIO quotes Fazekas:
We’re glad that Gov. Kasich and the other politicians who passed S.B. 5 are finally admitting this is a flawed bill. Just like the bill was flawed, this approach to a compromise is flawed as well.
Our message is clear. These same politicians who passed this law could repeal it and not thwart the will of the people. They should either repeal the entire bill or support our efforts and encourage a no vote on Issue 2 [the repeal].
Once again, Republicans underestimated the spirit of the people. On June 29, Ohioans marched in The People’s Parade to Repeal S.B. 5, with 6,000 Ohio workers and a semi-truck full of more than a million signatures, making this a record for any Ohio ballot initiative. Cue the Kasich queasies (Kasich squeaked in as Governor in 2010, with just 49% of the vote against Democratic incumbent Ted Strickland). Watch here:
Kasich et al only want to meet with union leaders now so they can remove the referendum from the ballot in order to save it from being repealed. The Republicans in the state are now suggesting that Democrats and union leaders shouldn’t play political games when the economy is so bad, but should be willing to talk to Republicans about reforming S.B. 5.
Predictably, the ALEC puppets (Kasich et al) cry like babies for compromise when they stand to lose something, after months of refusing to even hear the position of the labor leaders before they passed legislation impacting workers. These are the same Republicans who told the press last March that they were doing what the people wanted. 1,300,000 signatures disagrees with their Luntz spin, as do the latest polls. Of course, the polls back in March told the Republicans that the people were not behind them as well, but the Republicans ignored that in order to serve their corporate masters.
The people never wanted collective bargaining taken away from workers. After all, equal opportunity is a founding principle of this country and most Americans understand the need for workers to unite in negotiations against corporate power in order to level the playing field. The Republicans won last spring, but they are paying the piper now and they don’t like to pay for things, as you know.
Expect the spin to come fast and furious out of Ohio as the GOP scrambles to make the Democrats and union leaders look bad for refusing to negotiate with them, even though the GOP refused to even hear the workers last spring as they passed their Koch agenda with watering mouths. It’s ironic and sad to note that Kasich, the son of a mail carrier, wouldn’t be where he is today without the help of the unions covering public servants like his father or the public school system run by the very public servants whose rights he killed with S.B. 5. Kasich is just another Republican who got his and doesn’t seem to have the empathy for those who walk in his past shoes now.
Ohioans just gave the Koch agenda a big black eye. It couldn’t happen to a more worthy opponent of democracy.

I remember so well Kasich’s arrogant attitude when he signed that. It amazed me as much as Scott Walker’s behavior. I remember thinking at the time “I hope they get their comeuppance”. (sp?)

The time for talking is long past, and now Kasich and his henchmen are being forced to deal with the logical consequences of the dim-witted arrogance that kept them from listening to the majority of Ohioans. He is spooked by what has happened in Wisconsin during the past week, and wants to avoid it. However, his pleas for negotiation are aimed at making his steaming pile more palatable rather than tabling it altogether. I’m glad the people don’t buy it.

Americans truly need to understand that this isn’t just about unions. The unions go first and then the rest of the jobs. The benefits the wage increases, grievance procedures all of that stuff will soon be gone if this is allowed to continue. That goes for everyone not just unions.
If you’ve ever heard stories about people working in the cotton mill for the man who lives in the big house up on the hill, that’s what you will go back to.
nonunion factory workers, office workers, people who work in banks as tellers, grocery store people, people at Walmart and people at Books A Million as well as thousands of other jobs will be affected by this. And you should always remember that the tea party supports your loss of benefits and wages, even though they themselves do not understand that the people they support will be coming for their money as well.
Which I really do not understand, simply because that kills the demand for products. Does it really boiled down to American corporations do not want people to work here or do they want you to work for absolutely nothing

Yes! And from what I understand, they are trying to take out the NLRB. The only hope we have in that regard, is that it seems that they are getting Darryl Issa to do it. He will not succeed as he is an ineffective, vindictive twit.
F*ck John Kasich

The problem with opossums like Kasich is that they don’t don’t know when to run when the car is coming. Kasich had the big head when his drone were passing SB5 and now when his people told him it is a dead bill, he wants to talk. The people now want their voices heard and they will be heard.

Shiva, it boils down to the fact that corporations do not need the American consumer anymore. They can sell their stuff globally, where it is produced just like they used to do here.

GOOD FOR WISCONSIN! DO NOT CAVE IN! Let the rest of the population feel their leaders wrath. They think its not going to impact on them –the private sector. WRONG! Its just a matter of time. Walker and his cohorts intend to do with all private sector jobs what they did with UNION JOBS –the plan to take away your benefits or make you pay more for them instead of making the insurance or employer pay. This has influenced many businesses in Wisc Ohio Mass etc. MORE MONEY FOR THE CORPS AND WALKER. NOHTING FOR THE PEOPLE. Pretty soon. ALL citizens of Wisc will be feeling it. UNLESS YOU RECALL HIS ARS!

Good job! Ohio will again be the deciding factor for the President seat. Sadly, I do not think Obama will win a second term. To much hate for the man for no reason. Ohio has had a lot of controversy as of late especially with it’s football program. I think Ohio will be the new Florida of the Bush era.
Speaking of college sport programs, I am wondering why this: bit.ly/p3YXI6 is allowed. OSU has its issues and now Georgetown. Of course China is to blame for this one. Why is China a world power again? Because they forfeit everything? How does that work?

I love a good newspaper:-) Ohio was Florida in 2004. I guess it’s your turn again, but with that investigation into 2004 not going well for the Republicans, at least they might change their tactics and not transfer all of the votes through the RNC severs before they’re counted this time. Oh, voter fraud — it’s sort of the GOP’s version of populism.

You see, he waited until after his bill was under recall, and then the results in WI to negotiate. Just like Mr Walker here now, saying we all need to find “bi-partisan” solutions, when he came out with his bill and said there would be no negotiations. Funny, I don’t trust either of them.

And they want us to believe that there wasn’t a
plan”?
Remember January, 2010, and Koch had his special little meeting in the desert – Palm Springs area? Breitbart skating on rollerblades, taking pictures of the protestors. Hotel guests run out because Koch wanted the entire place to himself . Even Canter showed up.
We wondered what the plan was…Guess we found out. The War Room planning for the take over of America

Could a few hundred thousand Ohioans Progressives come up to Michigan and kick start our Gubanatorial Recall Drive? Rick Snyder is just as anti-labor as your Gov. K. I don’t know where our recall effort is, or if too late, but Michigan workers, children, seniors and the poor are the most affected by this jerk’s actions to aid big business interests,(Koch brothers), and millionaires. Regular people want him gone and those that don’t are Robot Republicans programmed by GOP propaganda and lies. Even our Fred Upton is really a Big Oil Lapdog, wanting to dismantle the Federal EPA, along with a lot of other Big Oil boot licker Repugnicons. Little people need help and protection and our teachers and police are being laid off by the hundreds, statewide.
When will people wake up and see how destructive to a recovering economy, reckless spending cuts are. Moderation, dummies, moderation. The extremes are going to destroy this nation, if the People don’t take their country back from these greedy, lying SOBs.

Well, the Kasich worm is turning. Do the Republicans really think that Ohioans memories will be so short as to not remember how this SB5 was legislated? Or that this bill stripped collective bargainning and their right to strike. Florida, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin are all homes to Governors most despised for their anti-union/anti-collective bargainning stance with government employees. All these Govs kicked-out Democrats & Govt employee union reps and rammed through detrimental legislation at the bidding of the Koch Brothers. There appears to be no more compromise in America; this will ultimately harm us all as the “party of no” leaves America writhing in their wake.

Thank you Ohio, you make us proud! They have pushed too hard, now it’s time to push back and keep what we have earned. This country was based on “For the people, and by the People”. They are taking and not giving, the corporations and their puppets need to understand this.

I hope the non-union workers realize if it were not for the union brothers and sisters of this country, they would be working under poor conditions, low wages and no benefits. When it comes time to cast a vote keep in mind we all benefit.
