Pamela Geller’s New Ad Campaign Calls Muslims Savages
more from Hrafnkell Haraldsson
Conservative blogger and Ayn Rand worshiper Pamela Geller is playing the hate-filled Republican game of false equivalencies with New York’s subways. Politico reports that she has won a court order to put ads in 10 subway stations tomorrow. The ad reads: “In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man. Support Israel. Defeat Jihad.”
The ad has already appeared in San Francisco on city busses and she filed suit on Thursday to plaster it all over Washington, D.C.’s metro system.
Geller commits a couple of egregious sins here. She paraphrases an Ayn Rand quote, which is offensive enough – I mean, we really do not need Pamela Geller to share her personal deficiencies with us. Secondly, she creates a false equivalency between Israel and Jihad. Are we to take it from her that Israel is the opposite of Jihad? The Jewish Bible promotes Holy War. In it, the Jews “dedicate” entire cities to their God. By dedicate, of course, is meant “sacrifice” – and we know what that meant to the citizens of those cities – men, women, and children.
Religious terrorism has been with us a long time, and on a much more horrific scale than the World Trade Center.
Geller ignores all the problems her advertising campaign brings up. What about the fundamentalist Christian calls to crusade? During the Iraq War, even Bush referred to the war as a crusade, though he quickly backtracked. Lt. General William Boykin still refers to that war as a crusade, and said it was not a war against an Iraqi dictator but a war against Satan.
Boykin is now working for the FRC. He has met with Romney. The idea of anti-Muslim crusade is now inextricably linked to the Republian presidential campaign. And as documented here, the Religious Right has used both the war in Iraq and the war in Afghanistan as crusades against Islam through proselytizing – conversions, distributing Bibles, and the like. The Air Force and the Air Force Academy and other areas of the U.S. military have been infiltrated by fundamentalist Christian zealots who preach holy war, particularly against Islam.
Not least of Geller’s sins is that her ad insults Muslims. And not just terrorists, as she disengenuously claims, as you will see in a moment.
There is not a lot we can do in our open society to combat the evils of free speech except by countering it with the good of free speech. In San Francisco, for example, Mother Jones reports, San Francisco’s Municipal Transportation Agency, Muni, may have to run Geller’s ad but there is nothing stopping them from running their own ad.
While being all for her own right of free speech, of course, Geller became totally unhinged that Muni thought it also had the right to free speech. Muni put up ads next to Geller’s (with an arrow pointed toward it) with a disclaimer that reads: SFMTA policy prohobits discrimination based on national origin, religion, and other charateristics and condemns statements that describe any group as “savages.”
This is what the apoplectic Geller had to say on Atlas Shrugs:
This is unprecedented in the history of outdoor advertising. This is the manifestation of Sharia in Western society. Any war on innocent civilians is savage. They are reading the idea that “all Muslims” or “all Arabs” want to destroy Israel into my ad. That is nowhere in my message. They are the Islamophobes and racists.
Ah, so now Muni, and not Geller, is Islamophobic? Really? Geller uses an Ayn Rand quote. But as Mother Jones points out, she doesn’t give you the entire quote. She claims she isn’t talking about all Arabs but look at what Ayn Rand said in full in the quote from which Geller borrowed (posted on the Ayn Rand Center):
Further, why are the Arabs against Israel? (This is the main reason I support Israel.) The Arabs are one of the least developed cultures. They are typically nomads. Their culture is primitive, and they resent Israel because it’s the sole beachhead of modern science and civilization on their continent. When you have civilized men fighting savages, you support the civilized men, no matter who they are. Israel is a mixed economy inclined toward socialism. But when it comes to the power of the mind—the development of industry in that wasted desert continent—versus savages who don’t want to use their minds, then if one cares about the future of civilization, don’t wait for the government to do something. Give whatever you can. This is the first time I’ve contributed to a public cause: helping Israel in an emergency.
Here, it is not Palestinian terrorists Rand is referring to. It is Arabs as a whole. This is more than Islamophobia. It is racism as well. The Arab culture is “primitive” and they apparently resent Israel’s flush toilets or something (which says a lot about Ayn Rand’s thinking at least if not the Arabs’).
It is funny how much conservatives hate free speech when it isn’t their free speech. And why is free speech that disagrees with their Islamophobic messages always “Sharia” compliant? All Muni did was recognize the facts behind the quote. And how Geller and other conservatives hate facts.
Fundamentalist Christians love to advertise their message and, as part of that message, condemn “Paganism” (everything not fundamentalist Christian in character) but God forbid an Atheist group, for example, dares express itself with a billboard or a subway message. They how like stuck pigs if anyone else dares use their First Amendment rights to say something they do not like.
And that is all that is happening here. Somebody else (Muni, in this case) is using First Amendment rights to disclaim an ad they are being forced to run because of Geller’s own First Amendment rights. The choice here seems less about Israel and Jihad than about universal applicability of the First Amendment. And what Geller carefully ignores is that even three Jewish groups have denounced her New York advertising campaign, according to Mondoweiss. Geller claims she is defending Jews from anti-Semitism but Jews themselves do not appear to see it that way – at least not all Jews. You can be sure she will continue to carefully avoid noticing that little fact.
The first is a false choice. A choice for Israel isn’t a choice against Jihad. The second is a very real problem facing Americans. The First Amendment applies to everybody, not to any one group. Speaking your mind invites others to speak theirs and they have every right to do so, including Muni.
Just wait till some Muslim group realizes it also has the right to have its voice heard on the issue o being called savages. Oh the temerity!
Geller says “If it’s not a film it’s a cartoon, if it’s not a cartoon it’s a teddy bear,” she said. “What are you going to do? Are you going to reward Islamic extremism? I will not sacrifice my freedom so as not to offend savages.”
And we will not sacrifice our freedom so as not to offend those who would deny everybody but themselves the right of free speech and the right to freedom of religion. Grow a thicker skin, Pamela, and get used to the idea that the rest of us have a right to express our opinions as well.

The kind of decorticated hatred Geller expresses and fosters isn’t confined to Muslims, either. One of the commenters at her blog said Sandra Fluke should have her “clit sliced off at the root”, which caused the others to cheer loudly.
Furthermore, if the targets of such hate addicts don’t behave in a way their defamers say they should, they’ll be treated in ways calculated to make them do so. The filmclip which precipitated the incident at Benghazi was a project of Geller’s: even if she didn’t write, produce, or direct it, she solicited funds for its making. The stated aim of this thing was actually to provoke Muslim violence, so the rest of the world could see what they were “really” like.
By the way, what was insAyn referring to as “their continent’? Did she think the Arabian Peninsula is a continent? Did she mean Asia? Africa? Maybe she could see Jiddah from her back yard…

It’s wild, Reynardine. A trip to the Ayn Rand center is like a trip back to 19th century pseudo-science. It’s no wonder it’s such a great fit for Republithugs

Well, I was reading and laughing…I mean, racism is the result of collectivism? The only antidote for racism is laissez-faire capitalism? Really?

Ahmadinejad is coming to NYC that why their fricken’ heads are spinning worse than evah!

I can’t wait, until the investigation of the Libyan uprising lands on the doorstep of rMoney/PamGellar and the rest of them for that awful movie.
October surprise!
rMoney met with Gellar and her ilk in Aug.
Where are they getting the Money to do these movies and billboards?
I don’t think that people should HAVE to see this crap. Its being a captive audience.
Someone recently visited FL and told me all the way on the highways are these horrible anti-abortion billboard ads. She said, “like everyone going there for a abortion”?
Where is the money coming for all these billboards?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Oh, come now, Wolfie, your theory about a sinister money source could be knocked into a Koched hat.

While riding to a couple of jobs, I noticed the signs. I started counting.
The worst section was about 30% anti-abortion. The average was about 10%. The sections with the least were about 5%. That’s running between 1 in 10 on average to 1 in 3 at the worst.
I also noticed that areas I knew were far more militant Religious Right were associated with a higher frequency of signs.
Someone is spending a lot of money – WASTING a lot of money on those signs, and they’re also highly dishonest and misleading.
Of course, there were a few “America, Love it or LEAVE” signs noted too… usually pretty close to an anti-abortion sign.

Just as free speech should be accompanied by a sense of responsibility for the words we speak and write, it should also be accompanied by the awareness that those we disagree with also have the right to speak out. These realities are lost on Pamela Gellar and her ilk, but that has become a hallmark of the modern Republican Party.

Many years ago Daniel Schorr shared an insight which triggered much understanding for me. He said, “The Arabs are not barbarians. The definition of a barbarian is: ‘One who has no history.’” (Hmmm… who might that describe?) “The Arabs have too much history. It mocks at them.”

I understand that the SFMTA had to (by law) allow those ads. What I don’t understand is why the people of San Francisco haven’t Tagged them?

Hey, don’t worry, be happy! Be happy that the taggers and street artists are going to have SO much fun with those signs! Wait a few days and then listen for the sounds of their pointy li’l heads exploding over at SENA . . .

The picture of Geller and Romney should have been added to this post. In that he thought nothing about having his picture taken with her. It makes you recall Geller’s involvement in the NY mosque protests among other things.
Personally, I consider Geller a ‘homegrown terrorist’ in that she incites, enflames, etc — the list too long to post. And Romney’s ‘palled’ around with her.
By her putting these ‘ads’ which I don’t consider ‘ads’ on public transit/public places will enflame both sides while she sits back and laughs knowing what she is accomplishing. But then only she & the ‘Right’ believe themselves to have free speech. As noted above, when SFMTA put up their own, she called them racists and Islamaphobes. Surprised she didn’t say unpatriot, etc. The usual ‘extremers’ rant.

For Rand and Geller to call Muslims savages is absurd and shows their ignorance of history. Arabs and Persians contributed greatly to the sciences we have today, particularly mathematics and astronomy. Perhaps Pam doesn’t know that the numerals she uses to balance her checkbook are known as Arabic numerals. While they were first developed in India, they were introduced in medieval Europe by the Arabs as were many of the mathematical concepts we use today.
And… if you want to talk about savage, what about the 3500 Palestinian civilians who were raped, tortured, massacred and buried alive September 16-18 1982 in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps by the Israelis under the direction of Ariel Sharon, who was then defense secretary.
Then there was the attack on the American ship, USS Liberty June 8, 1967 in which 37 Americans lost their lives and 171 were wounded. The Israelis claim to this day that they mistook her for an Egyptian ship but the Liberty survivors say different.
I could go on and on but I’m just sayin.

Regarding the USS Liberty, I should have gone on to say that according to James Bamford in his book, “Body of Secrets: Anatomy of the Ultra-Secret National Security Agency”, the reason for the Israeli attack on the Liberty, which was an intelligence gathering ship, was that the Israelis were afraid the personnel on board the Liberty had witnessed their execution of hundreds of unarmed Egyptian prisoners of war during the 6 day war.
