Paul Ryan Looked America In The Eye Today, and Completely Lied About the Sequester
Rep. Paul Ryan went on CNBC today, looked straight into the camera, and completely lied about the sequester to the American people.
On CNBC’s Squawk Box, Rep. Paul Ryan was asked if there is anything going on behind the scenes that could avert the sequester.
Ryan answered, “As you know, the sequester was designed to force action to deal with the deficit and debt. We passed a bill 300 days ago to deal with this. As recently as December the Senate still hasn’t done anything. So I do expect the sequester to take effect, because the Senate hasn’t acted, the president is around the country campaigning instead of governing. So I think what you’ll see happen next week is we will pass an appropriations Measure that gives the administration more flexibility.”
What Ryan didn’t bother to mention was that the bill that the House passed 300 days ago is no longer valid because that action occurred in the previous Congress. In order to replace the sequester, the House would have to pass a new bill. The problem is that John Boehner won’t allow any sequester replacement bills to come to the House floor for a vote.
For Paul Ryan, lies are like Lay’s potato chips. He can’t stop at just one. While complaining that Obama moved the goalposts, Ryan told this whopper, “The president got the largest tax increase in American history eight weeks ago. Now he’s trying to move the goal post and say instead of spending cuts which the sequester is, ‘I need a bunch of tax increases’ for this, as well to fuel more spending.”
Just like they claimed Obamacare was the biggest tax increase in history, Republicans like Ryan are now claiming that the tax hike on the wealthy is the largest in history. The truth is that Obamacare is the sixth largest tax increase since 1968. The tax increase on the wealthy was nowhere near the largest in modern history. According to the Treasury Department, the biggest tax increase in the modern era belongs to Republican hero Ronald Reagan. President Reagan’s 1982 tax increase was 25% larger than Obama’s.
Paul Ryan looked America in the idea today, and totally lied about the sequester. Ryan lied about how we got here. He lied about his own advocacy for, and role in the sequester. He couldn’t even tell the truth about why the House refuses to act to replace the sequester.
As Rep. Keith Ellison said while taking Sean Hannity to the woodshed on his own show, “The president is telling the truth.” In a nutshell, that’s the problem for Ryan and his fellow House Republicans. Obama is telling the truth, and all they can do to counter these facts is to repeat their empty lies.

You say where are the lies? The lies are spelled out and the truth told. Ryan is one of the biggest liars in the congress today. The bill or one of the bills he is so proud of is dead in the water. Any bills left on the table at the end of a House session is dead. All bills would have to be rewritten. The tax increase wasn’t really all increase..just allowing the old tax cuts to retire. The biggest lie..he cares about the country.

I hope you know that you cant redistrict a state. Your comment that republicans somehow redistricted a state so a republican can win is as stupid as saying that Obama is telling the truth about the Sequester. The house, senate and president all agreed to the sequester. Obama is lying that it is going to kill jobs. It is not a decrease to the budget. Obama will still be able to spend more money in 2013 than he did in 2012. There just isnt as much money as they wanted.

Obama has twice in the last month told the press he was actively working with Republicans to solve a problem, when Republicans hadn’t heard “boo” from him.
There’s clearly no point in the House passing a bill. The Senate and Obama will simply ignore it. There’s little point in negotiating; Obama will just keep asking for more, and his word isn’t worth a plug nickel. That’s how we got to this point.
Shiva(Moderator)
Feb. 28th, 2013 at 6:33 pm

BTW, have you seen house republicans bringing the jobs bill up for a vote? Thats why we dont have enough jobs.
A. Nonymous
Feb. 28th, 2013 at 6:42 pm
We don’t have enough jobs because Obama continues to make it more and more expensive for companies to do business. The jobs bill was just more of the same pork that got us into this deficit mess in the first place.
Reagan, Clinton, and both Bushes were able to get things done when they had opposite-party control in Congress. Obama can’t because he is a poor leader, a poor negotiator, and completely untrustworthy.
Lest we forget, the sequester came about because Obama went back on an agreement to end the debt limit debate last year. Had he kept his word, we would have had a new spending bill in place and this wouldn’t be happening now.
Shiva(Moderator)

How did Ryan lie? The House did pass a bill that the Senate ignored. The President has been running around the country making speeches. He won’t meet with lawmakers until tomorrow, and that just because his press secretary was caught lying to the press about his involvement.
So Boehner won’t allow a vote on another bill for the Senate to ignore. At this point, he’s probably done with trying to work with the Dems because it gets him nowhere. He compromises and compromises and all they do is renege on what they’ve already agreed and ask for more and more taxes.
Obama doesn’t want to work out a deal. He doesn’t want to cut spending. He doesn’t want to reform entitlements. When he says anything to that effect, he is lying.
Shiva(Moderator)

Why does the president have to meet with the house? It is the job of the congress to do the budget
Ryan lied beucase he knew his bill was passed, he also knew it wouldnt get to the senate. He lied when he said a bill had been passed but he never mentioned it was invalid becuase of the new congress. Then Boehner said he would not allow any votes to stop the sequester.

Feb. 28th, 2013 at 8:37 pm
Republicans reached across the aisle and got THEIR hands bit? There’s a huge crock of revisionist history. The main reason a lot of things DIDN’T get done when Congress and the White House were controlled by the Dems was Obama insisted on trying to come thru with his campaign promise of “changing the tone/culture in Washington”, and repeatedly got burned for it. Remember, Obama really wanted a single-payer system like most other industrial nations, but the Repubs insisted “oh no, we can’t destroy insurance companies and have big government death panels instead” (like insurance companies didn’t decide when you weren’t profitable to treat). Then it turned around that the resultant legislation was “all Obama’s fault”. Revisionist history. And it’s only one example.
So now Obama seems to have learned his lesson, a bit late, but there it is. The NeanderCons only understand political machinations and are forced to compromise due to more unpleasant alternatives. Secretly, I bet the White House really DOES want the sequester to go into full force, because here’s the truth of the matter: this will be a real world example of what the Tea Baggers want. This IS the face of less government. People getting poisoned by the food they eat, essential services shutting down, a second-rate military, and retirees going broke.

I have read yours and a few others comments and, all you have done is spew the SAME BS FOX approved talking points which have NO basis in reality or, MATH. You claim the reason we have no jobs is taxes, well wrong again. The GOP run around saying the corp tax rate is 35%, while that is technically true, the fact of the matter is corps. actually PAY on avg UNDER 14%! Just like the tax rates on the wealthy, once they get all of their loopholes and deductions, guys like Romney and other wealthy people pay under 15% and it was reported that if he would have claimed all that he COULD have on the year he DID release, he would have paid under 10% on income of 20 MILLION dollars!
Meanwhile, my wife, a school teacher, paid 24%! Then you speak of “entitlement” cuts, and I will assume that like most of the bobbleheads on the right, your talking about SS and Medicare. Sorry, those “entitlements” were paid for ny EVERY working American in this nation, its not an “entitlement” its OUR money! Also, nearly 2.5 TRILLION of the debt is owed to SS which, the raping of, was started by guess who? Thats right good ol’ Ronnie ” Friedman” Reagan! You see, that “hero of the right” may be the WORST POTUS ( other than Dubya ) this nation has ever seen! He was an ardent follower of that idiot Milton Friedman, the godfather of supply side economics. We had 12 years of that from 80-92, then another 8 years from 2000-08 and what was the result? BOTH times ended in financial ruin primarily CAUSED by the Friedman economic model of deregulation which gave the wealthy free reign with NO checks and balances in place to curb their corruption.
You see, Ryan, Kantor and the rest of these Ayn Rand admirer’s are spewing the SAME old GOP philosophy of the last 30 years and they, and apparently you A non, have yet to figure out that supply side economics ONLY benefits the wealthy. I don’t love Obama because I think he is to FAR right on many things and, he has proposed bills and legislation which the GOP have traditionally supported and yet they reject him every time, which tells me that there is more to their obstruction than policy difference. If your going to come to a progressive site, and try to argue, may I suggest you at least come armed with a few facts as opposed to tired old GOP talking points?

As far a Ryan is concerned I didn’t bother bringing this up in my last post because any sane person who saw Keith Ellison’s showdown with Hannity and thought this was a positive thing, isn’t going to get in anyway. All modern day politicians lie and all their bills add to the deficit and you are all being asked to give more, in one tax/gov’t fee or another. Heck a $9.99 extra phone cost $15. 50% tax. A lot of them are hidden. Both parties blow… the deficit keeps growing no matter who is in charge. They are pretty much one in the same. One party makes a stink to take your eye off the ball. While the other goes about adding to the deficit and the rest of you fight with each other. In many ways it’s a brilliant con being played on all of us.

The saddest part of all of this to me is the fact that basically, 43 Congressmen are holding the entire nation hostage. These tea party fools who prove every time they open their mouths that most of them skipped civics class in high school and weren’t any better at math, have taken the GOP hostage because the ones who would compromise, are terrified of getting primaried in their district. Its not that they have better ideas than the moderate repubs. they just are able to raise more money from the most extremist billionaires like the Koch bros.
The GOP can’t stand the fact that the American people have rejected their tired policies and bigotry for the last 2 elections. They see their party becoming more irrelevant every year as the demographics in this country change. Thats why we are seeing this attack on the voting rights act, and all of these red states trying to rig elections in any and every way possible. Their party is dying on the vine and, in place of getting with the times, they hang onto their tired old rhetoric. You can’t be anti-EVERYTHING but rich old white guys and expect to win majority in this country going forward.
All of that said, the democrats BETTER turn out in record numbers in 2014 and get the house back before these idiots completely destroy this Country

From what I could google, it seems the previous congress ended early January this year. Which would mean that in the December he mentioned, the bill passed “300″ days ago would still have been valid. That it is no longer valid doesn’t change the fact that it *had* been valid and that the senate didn’t act then. You can make a point that he was being misleading, but unless there was more he said that wasn’t quoted, he wasn’t actually *lying* and now it’s this article that’s being misleading by making is seem he was saying that the 300 day old bill was still available to be acted on by the senate when from what was quoted, he was just saying that it *had* been available.

This article is supposedly out to show that Paul Ryan lied, yet starts out by implying that he was being deceitful when he said the house had passed a bill 300 days ago because that bill was from the previous congress and no longer valid. That it is no longer valid doesn’t change the fact that it *had* been valid, and that the senate hadn’t done anything with it. I suppose we could be generous and just put that down to the writers lack of comprehension rather than a deliberate attempt to make Paul Ryan appear dishonest.
The article also isn’t too clear about exactly how Paul Ryan lied in regards to the creation of the sequestration. From the links I’ve read, I’m guessing the idea is that it’s because he’s said that the sequestration is not good government, yet was also involved in setting it up in the first place. Yet to get that he lied from that is a bit of a stretch. That he wanted it in place doesn’t necessarily mean that he wanted it to come into effect. Now, if he’s said somewhere that he was against the sequestration being put in place originally when he hadn’t been, then there would be a clear lie, yet why didn’t this article say as much instead of just saying that he’d lied and expecting us to take it’s word that he’d lied about something or other.
The only clear lies this article mentions could be seen more as white lies. They’re hyperbole, exaggerations. And actually, reading the articles linked, they may be less lies and more misrepresentations of the facts. Admittedly not a polite thing to do either. While comparing taxes by simple dollar value instead of as a percentage of the GDP doesn’t give an accurate picture of them, it’s not strictly speaking lying to say they’re the largest *IF* the simple dollar value is the largest even though the %/GDP may not be. Now *that* would be a perfectly honest thing to report about. If Paul Ryan used misleading numbers, that would be a good thing for a journalist to point out. This article just seems to be trying to make him look like a bald faced liar by any means possible and the more times I read it and the articles it links to, the less impressed I am by the job it’s doing of it.
Paul Ryan may well be spawn of the devil, but upon a logical appraisal, this article does next to nothing to prove it.

1) Y’know what tics me off more than almost anything?!! Nobody on national news programs, political interviews, Meet the Press, Face the Nation, the McLaughlin Group, none of these “appointed” journalists or quasi-political “news” programs ever exposes Republican spokesmen for their lies, nor even challenges them with a “hard” second question.
2) I sometimes watch Fox “News” because it’s like watching the Three Stooges–humor that comes from ineptitude and, in the case of Fox, the greatest minds of the 13th century.
3) I watch Rachel Maddow but recently it just makes me angry when she talks about political realities that, again, nobody seems to be doing anything about! (Return to paragraph 1.)
