Paul Ryan Calls Eliminating Food and Healthcare for 600,000 Kids ‘Smarter Cuts’
While trying to blame President Obama for the sequester, Rep. Paul Ryan referenced the smart cuts that the House passed. Those ‘smarter cuts’ would take away food and healthcare for hundreds of thousands of kids.
Video:
Transcript from ABC News:
KARL: Well, let’s get to the biggest other issue out there right now which is these automatic spending cuts. You’ve been pretty clear. You’ve predicted for some time that you think that this so-called sequester is going to happen.
Let me ask you this, congress is now on recess for ten days, the president is playing golf in Florida this weekend. Is there really any everyday underway to try to avert these cuts right now? Are you even trying.
RYAN: Well, there have been from the House Republicans.
Let’s take a step back. Don’t forget it’s the president that proposed the sequester and designed sequester and House Republicans who twice passed legislation replacing the sequester with smarter cuts in other areas of government.
Rep. Ryan proposed (R-P90X), and the House passed, the Sequester Replacement Reconciliation Act of 2012 last summer. After it died in the Senate, the Sequester Replacement Act was slightly tweaked and brought back by House Republicans during John Boehner’s fiscal cliff Plan B fiasco.
Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) noted during the Plan B debate on the House floor that the Ryan/GOP cuts would throw a combined 600,000 poor children off of food stamps and Medicaid. Literally, Paul Ryan is trying to protect the defense industry by starving hundreds of thousands of economically disadvantaged children.
The “smarter cuts” that Rep. Ryan is touting would slash food stamps, and throw 300,000 children off the program. The cuts are so extensive that they would eliminate food assistance for 1.8 million adults and children. Ryan’s cuts would also eliminate Meals on Wheels, federal funding for child protective services, and healthcare for disabled adults and children.
Children may have a “right to life” in the Republican Party, but the conservative culture of life doesn’t include food. If kids want to eat, they’re on their own.

If Children want to eat, their parents should feed them!! I agree there are people who are going through tough times and need help. Unfortunately, there are many more taking advantage of the system. The government could make these cuts and still help the people who really need it.i totally support Paul Ryan!

Glad to see a common sense comment on the articles coming from this source. we need to address the real problem and not just treat the systoms. education reform, school choice, the best jobs program is havea lower min. wage , so teens can get jobs allow job creators to keep more of their money and less regualtions to be in the way. forcing the productive to pay more to bigger govt. merely masks the systom briefly and then it gets worse, because the productive lose the incentive to work harder. Our nation lacks leadership and in the old words of Irish wisemen and women a fish stinks from the head down.

Economics is a social *science*. Can we base future economic decisions on math?
With that, your voodoo solutions on economics don’t add up.Never have never will. When tax rates were at 90% at the top end America had its greatest growth of the middle class. You people always idolizes the leave it to beaver mentality, well that was set in a time of 90% tax rates.Or you just look back at that time when the blahs and women knew their “place”?

You cannot have an economy based on people who have no money to buy things and would rather get by on the meager amount of free money from the government, rather than make an effort to better their situation. The biggest problem with people like you is that you believe EVERYONE who says, I can’t afford it, I can’d do it.

In order for there to be obscenely rich people in a world with 7 billion people and dwindling resources, a few hundred million people are going to have to starve to death. It’s basic economics. Just ask Ayn Rand:
Taganov: ““Don’t you know,” he asked, “that we can’t sacrifice millions for the sake of the few?”
Kira: “You can! You must. When those few are the best. Deny the best its right to the top-and you have no best left. What are your masses but mud to be ground underfoot, fuel to be burned for those who deserve it? What is the people but millions of puny, shriveled, helpless souls that have no thoughts of their own, no will of their own, who eat and sleep and chew helplessly the words others put into their mildewed brains? And for those you would sacrifice the few who know life, who are life?”” ~ Kira, Ayn Rand’s hero from We The Living.

Rule by divine right went out in most of the world after WWI.
And the graveyards are full of indispensable people.
Galt’s Gulch lasted until everyone realized their ideas were useless without labor to build them. Toilet paper, refrigeration, delivery service, alcohol, heating systems, cigarettes. All the products of those useless mud people.
We need to demand fair recognition and compensation for OUR labor.

“When those few are the best. Deny the best its right to the top-and you have no best left. What are your masses but mud to be ground underfoot, fuel to be burned for those who deserve it?”
Since Rand herself took advantage of Social Security benefits (and no doubt took some form of healthcare assistance when she required lung surgery following decades of smoking), it seems she wasn’t above being one of the “mud to be ground underfoot” or “fuel to be burned” when it suited her . . .

Why is it our job as Americans to continue to support a Government that doesn’t support us? All members of congress are MULTI I repeat Multi-millionaires. The budget isn’t out if wack because of Government programs to help the less fortunate or because of the war or even because of the USPS. The budget is out of wack because of gross spending in DC. Why do our government officials continue to make 100k per month that we provide in taxes but our middle class struggles to make ends meet. Granted I think people should work hard for their money & work hard to better their lives but really? Why aren’t there salary cuts for 5 years. I’m sure our Government officials can take a 40% cut in wages for 5 years & survive. Why are we taking from the poor & not from the people proposing the cuts? It’s not rocket science that we have too many chiefs making too much money. I just don’t get it.
Reynardine

These journalists never ask the right questions. Instead of asking how he’s going to “balance the budget” how about asking How this will grow the economy. It has been proven time and time again that austerity measures does not lead to economic growth. The Republicans like to make the American people think that we have a “debt crisis that is bad for the economy today” when we really have a building debt that will, 10-20 years from now, have severe consequences if health care costs are not brought under control and Social Security is put on a more sustainable path. The fact of the matter is after the stimulus runs out we’re running at 21% GDP for spending and around 16% for Revenue. We have not been below 20% of GDP for spending since the 70′s and we have always been around 18% of GDP for revenue. You bring spending down to 20% and Revenues up to 20% and we no longer have a budget issue. Easier said than done I know but like i said the biggest issue facing the country is out of control health costs 10-15 years from now and a social security program that is going to be depleted in 2033 because of an aging population and not some imaginary “debt crisis”.

47 million people on food stamps? Remove 600,000? Surely, those removed would be those that were the least needy?
Anyone seen a starving person in America lately? Walk the grocery stores, and it’s easy to spot those on food stamps… they have carts full of expensive cuts of meats and other luxury foods. And, they waddle. Only in America do you have obese ‘hungry people’.
Ronald

Just how exactly do you KNOW these people who “have carts full of expensive cuts of meats and other luxury foods” are on food stamps? Do you follow them to the checkout to see if they use their SNAP cards to pay for those items? Do you have any studies that back up this claim or are you just projecting your prejudices on people without any actual knowledge?

You are making some inaccurate assumptions, Michelle, when you assert that “we” want the government to “do” something for us, and asking why don’t we “try” living without it. Most of us posting here at PoliticusUSA are those who are professionals or who were before we retired, but you seem to automatically assume that we’re looking for some sort of handout. Nope. Not true. I’ve never used any form of government assistance, never drew one cent of unemployment, and throughout my long career, I paid for my own health, life, and real estate insurance. You may not want to admit it, but you, too, benefit from what government has to offer to every American citizen. Tell you what, it’s getting close to the time for Americans to file their income taxes. To demonstrate that you “take” nothing from the government, you can prove it by avoiding the following deductions when you file your taxes:
*real estate taxes/home mortgage deduction
*child care tax
*child credit deduction
*the deduction you take for yourself and/or your spouse
*the medical deduction
*the deduction for the supplies you buy and use on your job
*any other deduction that allows you to lower your tax rate
*state income tax
*Also, stop using any services//items provided by federal, state, and/or local governments. This bans you from using the post office, public schools, libraries, roads and bridges, airports, and any enterprise that has access to these. It might even require you to move out of your house, if you own it, or are buying it.
Talk is cheap, Michelle. Action is better. I’ll only believe that you expect nothing from the government when you eschew all tax breaks/ government offers of any kind and avoid using any service funded by you and I and the millions of other taxpayers.
You make a common mistake that millions of other Americans make, and it’s that you look at the government as a separate entity from yourself. It’s not, because we, the citizens of the good old USA, ARE the government. Government is a construct citizens create to make decisions on their behalf. We created the government. So, yes, we ARE the government, and this includes you.

Michelle your mistake is that a majority of people on assistance are “abusing the system”. Please point to one study that shows this is true. You Republicans think that we voted for “Daddy Obama” because we wanted “free stuff” and that since he won a second election it was because the “takers” now outnumber the “makers”. The fact of the matter is Welfare programs have been designed for the past 15 years in such a way that one cant simply live off them for the rest of their life. Regardless, we didn’t vote for Obama because he gave us anything we voted for Obama because Austerity has not ever worked and allowing the republicans to gut key programs wont change that. How about you stop accusing those getting assistance of abusing the system and start asking what we can do to get these people back to work. I’m trying my best to be civil but your complete arrogance and lack of empathy are simply pathetic.

I’m glad that I, who have paid taxes for 39 years and counting, make you sick, Brett, if I don’t want to see our elderly and our kids go hungry. It’s real Christian of you to dismiss the fact that these are our most vulnerable citizens and no one should begrudge them a meal, or healthcare. You’re a typical republican who talks out of his piehole. Citizens in blue states pay more in taxes than those in red states, and there are more citizens receiving government benefits in red states than there are in blue state, but in your feeble mind, liberal = someone who pays no taxes. Sounds just like something you’d hear from a talking head on Fox or from an uneducated nut like Limbaugh or Beck. Three cheers for the weak-minded who allow dummies to tell them what to think/do!!! You went to the voting booth in November and most likely voted for one of American’s biggest tax dodgers, Mitt Romney, and you thought nothing of it. You disparage the poor, kids, and the elderly for wanting healthcare and a decent meal. Something is seriously wrong with you, Brett, because in your mind, it’s okay for someone like Romney to avoid paying taxes, and it’s okay for him to say ugly things about our most vulnerable citizens, but when a democrat/liberal says we need to help them move up the socioeconomic ladder, you go nuts. Well, I have been, and will always be, a strong advocate for these groups, because I realize that God has blessed me and it’s my Christian duty to do something for those who can’t do things for themselves. May your cold heart provide much comfort to you as you live eternity as the featured guest of Mephistopheles.

Meals on wheels and other faith based programs are run off donations. The Govt needs to get the heck out and do what its supposed to do and defend the country

Defending the country costs money — lots of it (I know because I did so for 20 years.)
How do you propose that be paid for? With donations?

Ryan is only repeating the same old tired Republican talking points in trying to appeal to the far right conservatives. He is also fabricating(lying) about who is responsible for the Sequester, and never mentions the fact he voted for it. I’m glad the interviewer took him to task and read back to what he stated earlier after voting for the Sequester. He is full of Bull s#!+ and looks like a stereotypical politician by avoiding the question ask, or by diverting the conversation. It seems to me you can’t trust anything you hear from Boehner, McConnell, Canter, and Paul. They only say what’s convenient for them at the time, and seem to never worry about the truth.

This article reminds me of an SNL skit where a character playing James Carville says… “Republicans wanna give your kindergartners cigarettes and machine guns”…. hilarious as that was… so is this.

@Michelle. I know you repubs hate math, but here is the math you obviously can’t do. Ryan is proposing a 9% cut in those programs, Fraud and abuse accounts for less than 1%. Now the other over 8% are innocent of anything but a bad Bush policy failure for 8 years. I hope you sleep well backing scum like this, as long as we have you all outnumbered till the gerrymandering goes away is all I care about.

I love all these articles about “What Paul Ryan doesn’t want you to know”. Why aren’t we more concerned over what Obama doesn’t want us to know. Ryan is one of 435 people in the Congress. Obama is 1 of 1 Presidents. He can do far more damage to this country than Paul Ryan can!!!!

The flip side of that coin is what most Americans believe. See Nov. 6th 2012 for example.

So any damage Paul Ryan can do is ok? Got it. In other words you dont give a rip about what knd of budget comes out of the house, you just want to blame Obama for it.

Sueerd, those 435 people in Congress — of whom Ryan is one of — are the ones who vote on and approve all gov’t spending.
Man; I knew wingnuts weren’t adept at basic math — it appears they aren’t any more adept at knowing basic Constitutional functions . . .

I want to thank you all for your comments. As a politically conservative thinking person, I love to understand why and how others are wired. Over many years of observation and life, I finally quit arguing with the “opposition” and simply learned to listen. My goal is now to understand why progressives and liberals are wired so differently than I. Moreover, the above comments are filled with emotion and not logic in some cases. In others, the logic is just simply different than mine as a conservative. But, in the end, if the US does not make the difficult cuts or grow our economy, none of your programs that you feel are so important will last. We are headed for bankruptcy/devalued dollar. Why don’t we tackle that first, and then all of the social programs that we can all reasonably argue over will matter again?

Every president in history in this position has spent to get out of the deficits. You do not get our of a deficit by cutting, be8case that doesnt pay down tyhe deficitAround the world other countrys are proving that austerity does not work.
Every year since Reagan the necessary capitol to run this country has decreased. Have you asked yourself why we didnt have a deficit problem before Jan 19th 2009?
We have already seen what cuts will do and its not pleasant. We can stop wars.

Yes reducing entitlement is the same as murdering children by starvation, right? Entitlement programs need to be reduced and cut back. We don’t show compassion by how many people we can provide food stamps to, we show compassion by how many people we can help get OFF of food stamps. These cuts are designed to cut away people on the outer edges of qualifying for the program in the first place, it’s not some random hack and slash. There are people who are taking advantage of entitlement programs, who are using it when they could get by without it just fine. These are the people who are targets of these kinds of cuts. There are many people who haven’t worked in years and just collect benefits off the government or who only work part time because if they worked full time they’d actually lose money due to loss of benefits instead of paying for their own benefits. Sorry, I don’t feel like paying for those people. But you know what I do feel like doing? Giving to specific charities that do provide to people in need of my own volition instead of having it leeched out of me by taxes and having huge chunks of it go to free loaders. I have 5 different charitable organizations I give to, hundreds of dollars a year. I am intimately familiar with each of these organizations and know exactly where my money is going and how it’s used. That’s how you help people in neeed. Help people that need it? Yes. Remove 600,000 people that don’t really need it and are scamming the taxpayers? Yeah, that too! Go Ryan!

To depend on charities is laughable. Most of the people paying taxes today would not give a cent if taxes were removed.
Have you ever lived on entitlement programs? I thought not. Sorry, seen this one before.

I am doing quite well with my health, a decent job, a roof over my head, and a loving, supportive family. For these reasons, and because we are all interconnected to such a degree that our fates are linked, I am quite happy to know that my tax money also goes toward helping those less fortunate. The idea that the very government which provides the framework for how all of us live is the problem is a bizarre, out-of-touch concept that seems to be unique among some Americans. It is truly mind-boggling to hear some among us squawk about raising the minimum wage to a measly $9/hour while making excuses for the unbridled greed of some CEO’s which leads them to live lavishly while paying their employees poorly. Paul Ryan is the poster child for that kind of mentality, with his vacant, vacuous eyes that reflect the uncaring emptiness of his soul. Although I’m glad he is not the VP, he is still in a position to hurt countless Americans with his short-sighted, selfish stupidity that is shared by so many in his party.

Keep on, Ryan, and the dissatisfaction and disaffection social welfare programming damped down, thus throwing the Commies under the bus in the Thirties, will be back, and so will Marxism.
Conservatism is merely a prep-job for the Marxist resurgence to come.

If you can’t feed or provide for your own kids then don’t have them. If you need help that is what family is for. The government isn’t supposed to provide everything for everyone. Also stop bashing the rich they are the ones paying for it all!!! You liberals have no problem spending everyone elses money but there isn’t an endless supply.

Basic massive disconnect – same old, same old. Wake the f..K up Repugs. You’re being called ‘Repugs’ for a reason, y’know. You’re being LIED to on an unbelievable scale. Do some basic research before you decide you know everything – the number of people on welfare is ridiculously small compared to what you obviously believe. LOOK IT UP. I’ll be damned if I’m gonna do the work for you. Not again. The number of people on food stamps rises IN DIRECT PROPORTION to the number of people on unemployment, welfare, or underemployed working either part-time or overtime on minimum wage. The VAST majority of people on food stamps ARE WORKING – they simply don’t make enough money for FOOD. Because, like most people, they PAY THEIR DEBTS before they even consider spending “extra” on groceries.
Somehow, you’ve gotten this inane notion that our govt is somehow subsidizing poverty or abjectly poor people are cravenly choosing NOT to work because they would prefer to be abjectly poor. WTF?!?! Can you possibly BE that STUPID????? Well, obviously, you can – this is why your ideas are so REPUGNANT to all with a functioning brain cell or two.
There have been all kinds of TV programs highlighting just how STUPID your notions of ‘freeloading’ are. Didn’t Corey Booker JUST try to do a week living off of nothing but what he would get on food stamps? LOOK IT UP, and stop spouting useless BS that does nothing but highlight your own abysmal lack of empathy or any semblance of humanity.

My husband is nearly blind, disabled, and can’t cook, read medication labels, dial a cell phone, or dress his open belly wound from kidney transplant surgery, nor read his glucose meter, or fill a syringe 5 times a day. I have lost three jobs in a row, because I have to drive him to his many lab and doctor visits. We live off his disability payments. Not a lavish life at all, when one of his meds costs 3,000.00 a month. We get a grant, but with the donut hole, it is still 1,000.00. I garden, raise chickens for eggs, make my own laundry detergent, bake bread and make cheese. I buy meat from the bargain bin, dented cans, day old bakery items, and used clothing. We get movies from the library, cut our own wood, and I read to him, for entertainment. We keep the heat low, and wear lots of sweaters. We do not get any assistance. I often wish we could get food stamps, so we wouldn’t have to skimp on what meds he needs, or half dose them near the end of the month. He has twenty four more months of anti rejection drugs, and then he is screwed. I would not call this “Livin’ Large”.
