Personhood Movement Abuses Democracy To Enforce Biblical Edicts On America
There are myriad threats to any nation’s existence that do not all issue forth from invading armies or terrorist threats. Indeed, Thomas Jefferson warned that “banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies,” and since the Reagan era, America has witnessed that danger growing exponentially with every Republican Congress. In America today, although banking institutions and corporatism appear to be the greatest threats to economic freedom and personal well-being, they pale in comparison to a silent threat that is gaining momentum at such a rapid pace that without interdiction, the country as we know it is finished. Financial institutions and corporatism are overt in their attacks on working Americans, but there is another danger, a covert threat, that Jefferson sought to neutralize by prohibiting religious interference in government and people’s private lives.
The rise of the Religious Right and Christian Dominionists has now become an overt threat that America must destroy before this country is ruled by religious fanatics intent on imposing biblical law on every man, woman, and child. The recent manifestation of Christian Dominionism is the attack on women and their right to choose their own reproductive health, and it has escalated beyond opposition to Planned Parenthood and abortion. The personhood amendment frenzy has taken a dangerous turn by putting bans on contraception to a popular vote in a Christian-dominated state that may set the standard for an impending Federal law that will affect every woman in America.
In Mississippi last week, the state Supreme Court rejected a lawsuit to stop a ballot measure (Amendment 26) defining a person as the moment of fertilization. The implications of the ballot measure are that abortion, contraception, in vitro fertilization, and stem cell research could be rendered illegal if the initiative passes. Mississippi’s highest court ruled 7-2 against stopping the initiative and said it did not have the power to review ballot initiatives before the vote takes place. However, in refusing to stop the ballot measure, the court revealed that it will uphold the proposed constitutional amendment when it passes. There is little doubt the ballot initiative will pass because Mississippi has the largest percentage (82%) of Christians in the country. Not surprising is that of 9 justices, 7 profess Christianity as their religion on the MSS official website.
The danger to women cannot be overstated because besides eliminating all forms of contraception, it sets a dangerous precedent for Christians to dictate their belief that women must subject themselves to a man’s will. Michele Bachmann has traveled the country telling audiences that she obeys her husband’s every command because it is what god has instructed in the bible. The male-dominated society yearns for the time when women were barefoot, pregnant, and serving their husbands by keeping quiet and blindly obeying his edicts. Under a constitutional amendment that bans contraception, women will have little choice but to abstain from sexual intercourse or face a life of perpetual pregnancy. However, under the bible’s rules, a woman cannot refuse her husband’s sexual advances so they are left with no choice but to remain pregnant; because it is a biblical edict.
That is what happens when Christians gain a foothold in government, and as the Religious Right infiltrates the courts, the Bill of Rights is in jeopardy of being eliminated in favor of the Ten Commandments. The three leading Republican presidential candidates signed a pledge that if elected, they would appoint Christians to serve as judges at every judicial level include the U.S. Supreme Court. It should not be up to any court to enforce Christianity’s saturnine rules on Americans, but that is where this country is heading. Proponents of personhood amendments are not forced to use birth control, and if they choose to remain pregnant and barefoot, that is their right; but to force every woman to follow Christian’s laws is reminiscent of Sharia Law in Muslim countries.
It is not enough that Christians impose biblical edicts on each other; their goal is forcing every person in America to follow the bible’s Bronze Age laws. Democracy is not intended for a religious group to enforce its will on the entire nation, and it is like having a vote to determine right-handed people are superior to left-handed or ambidextrous people. A majority will always prevail in an election and allowing Christians to force their belief that contraception is wrong on the rest of the population is inherently anti-American as well as being patently unconstitutional. Now, with Christians infiltrating the courts and legislatures, no-one is safe. History bears out that given power and influence, religious extremists are capable of atrocities of epic scale and proportion.
The Mississippi ballot initiative symbolizes the beginning of theocratic rule in America. There is a belief that Christians are good honest people and that may be true, but given the choice of supporting the secular Constitution or the bible, there is little doubt the majority will choose their religious rule book. Americans are naïve if they think a Taliban-style government is not possible in this country and coupled with herd-mentality, it is all but a certainty. It is ridiculous to think Americans actually believe that intercourse is human life, but Americans are proving to be ridiculous religious freaks or personhood amendments would have never caught on.
One thing is certain; for Christian extremists, the Constitution’s guarantee of freedom means the freedom to impose the bible on every person in America and any fool who does not believe that just needs to look at Mississippi’s proposal that every woman in the state follows a no-contraception mandate. The tragedy is that once the personhood law is upheld in the courts, it will not be long before the majority of Americans who are Christians will either abolish freedom of religion or ban contraception on the Federal level. It is no small wonder that every woman in America who is not a Christian fundamentalist does not flee the country because it is just a matter of time before they are forced to stay home, clean their man’s chamber pots, and stay perpetually pregnant; like the bible tells them to.

I would opt, since abortion is still my right, to have that personhood sucked from my body and left for the state to raise. Let’s see them feed a lump of cells and walk it about and care for it through the age of 18. These people have to get out of our uterus, out of law making PERIOD!
Their twisted, hateful, judgmental, racist, bigoted, sexist morals will never be mine!

If all that goes through, Canada is going to have to have extra hands at the border stations to handle all the fleeing refugees from the United States.
I’ll be looking into my family tree to see if that dual citizenship in Ireland still applies to my generation.

Oh, bugger.
Apparently if you’re applying for third-generation citizenship (your great-grandparent was originally an Irish citizen), your grandparent must have started the citizenship application process before his or her death (using his or her Irish parent’s citizenship as basis of proof of heritage), and you must refer to that application in order to start your own.
Gramps died when I was young, and I doubt he applied for Irish citizenship.
Well, poo. There goes that idea.
Might as well start looking at homes in Toronto.

This wording:
“all human beings from the moment of fertilization, cloning or the functional equivalent thereof.”
Is so incredibly vague that it could include any and all forms of birth control. PEOPLE have to actually wake up and realize their rights being stripped away – day by day by day…
One thought is for the pharma companies to realize they won’t be happy with all the US citizens going to Canada for B/C simply because Canadian government controls the amount that can be charged…equals less profits for the pharma companies…

Please, substitute the word “Dominionists” for “Christians”, or at least “Fundamentalists”. Or use, as I do, “Good Christians” to designate those who think they’re doing so much good by forcing themselves on others.
Not all Christians think that way. I think you have a couple of us on this blog.

And you will never know how much the rest if us appreciate being reminded that there are still some sane Christians out there who live their faith and understand it, and not all are “christians” who seem to know nothing or understand anything about Christ as his teachings apply to the treatment of others. And this from an atheist! Thanks! :)

I believe that the vast number of real Christians are not part of this movement. However I do believe that they are being used to the degree that the fundamentalists are making it sound like real Christians agree with them. and we know they don’t. That brings up the problem that real Christianity is not speaking out against the fundamentalist as it should be. Which in a way makes it look complicit with the fundamentalists. There are a great many southern Baptists here that are part of this movement and do not understand what the movement is. For many down here they fall into this role quite easily, as in telling women they cannot wear slacks to church and they will send them home if they are wearing too much makeup. They have no problem with the man being the beast of the family.
Real Christians, that is Christians who are not part of this movement, need to stand up and learn what is going on. We recognize that they are not part of this movement

Totally agreed. It may be IMPLIED that these are a very..special..brand of Christian, but it’s always better to err on the side of clear speech and diplomacy.

Don’t rely on sexual abstinence as preventing “the functional equivalent thereof” either. Modern medicine has been able to make sperm cells out of marrow cells- yes, of women, too. So you go in for a bone biopsy, and then…

Doubt it. They’re so against any means of reproduction they consider “unnatural” (IV fertilization, for example), they wouldn’t touch manufactured sperm cells with a hundred-foot pole.
Plus, there’s research into using sperm cells created from female stem cells (and tentative research into using egg cells created from male stem cells) to allow gay and lesbian couples to have their own natural children without a sperm or egg donor.
That right there…whoops, it’s gay people! Throw that idea out!

I just read a report from STOPP.org on PP and they identify contraceptives as chemical abortions which are defined as drugs or devices that end the human being in the womb by preventing implantation. Products include the morning after pill, oral contraceptives, the patch, injectibles, and more.
Incredibly scary if any of these personhood bills pass.
Kate

Never mind that aside from the morning after pill, chemical contraceptives are also used in the treatment of endometriosis and other reproductive disorders.
But I guess that’s not very important to the Barefoot and Pregnant crowd. Let her go through five miscarriages and monthly pain, it’s for her sin of being a woman!

It is insane to think that the government has any right whatsoever regarding birth control. Of course, it is equally insane to think that the “drown the government in the bathtub crowd” should have any say whatsoever in a woman’s decision to terminate a pregnancy, for whatever reason.
Should the Dominionists get their way, we will devolve into precisely the same kind of rule that current-day politicians decry: a Taliban-like theocracy, only this time with Old Testament biblical proscriptions. Do those who would foist this on us not see this? Instead of Sharia Law (may it forever be cursed) we will get pseudo-Christian Law (bless it or suffer).
I really want to have hope for what our country was intended to be, at least as I read the founding documents. But there are so few among us with voice to speak of the reason and rationale. Or at least, so few who are actually heard.

No, they’ll hang you for not having children (cannon fodder for their armies).
Seriously… they do (or did) believe that a man or woman who willingly didn’t have children should be severely punished, and if a woman was unable, the man was supposed to divorce her and marry another. If the man was unable, well, it was the woman’s fault in some way or another.

I understand Colorado has voted against similar laws twice in recnet yars. In addition to the obvious reasons, many there were concerned about all the legal ramifications of declaring zygotes as “persons.” Hopefully, there will be enough sane people in other states to stop the passage of these types of laws.
What is going on in our country is not to be believed and we must do everything we can to stop it.

A person’s right over what happens to their own body is one of the most precious rights we have. Acknowledgement of this right prevents all manner of atrocities (non-voluntary organ harvesting, slavery, etc), and protects those who do not have enough money/power to be protected otherwise. Without the right to abortion any other rights women have are meaningless as they are only one rape away from being treated subhuman. Every woman should have the right to get an abortion if she chooses to do so.
The fetus is a potential person that looks increasingly human during development. However, without the necessary mental development acquired through experiencing life after birth it is no more a person than a skin cell is.
Anti-Abortionists view women as baby factories to pump out units to further their agenda. They don’t care about the actual children. If they did they wouldn’t orgasm every time the Republitards suggest cutting back on social programs that help/protect mothers/children.
Anti-Abortionists = “We want you to poop out babies until you DIE, and we are not going to help you in any way that actually costs us to take care of all those children. Just make sure you brainwash them to be religious/vote Republican before they die of starvation, or end up in jail. Hurr hurr derp derp.”
Religions get their power base mostly by brainwashing innocent children into their warped delusional view of reality. It’s a form of enforced mental retardation that I liken to child abuse. So it’s really no wonder religions oppose anything that doesn’t have women pooping out babies until they die. Reproductive control/choice threatens Religion’s power base.
Here is the fundamental difference between pro-choice, and anti-choice people.
Pro-abortion = Fighting for the right to control their own bodies.
Anti-abortion = Fighting for the right to control the bodies of other people.
Anti-abortionists are evil.

Here is a link to an article from a site that thinks we should fight what they term as “hereditary religion” (I call it multi-generational traumatizing via mind control)
Some of their material is good, some of it hard for me to agree, but at least they’re calling attention to the issue as a form of abuse.

Our bodies are designed for sex because the process of evolution is powered by sex. You exist today because a lot of people had sex, and naturally people who had the most sex had the most babies. In evolution the people who have the most babies win because whoever has the most babies will be most representative of a species.
Fast forward millions of years, and you end up with humans beings who are healthier when they have sex on a regular basis. It relieves stress, it involves close social contact, promotes well-being, etc. Sex is not optional for most people who want to remain healthy.
At the beginning of human civilization it was necessary to make lots of babies mainly because other than fecundity humans are very ill equipped to deal with the natural world. Comparatively we have poor body strength, immune systems, reflexes, senses, etc even when compared to our closest ape ancestors. We survived our early evolutionary years because we are good at making babies.
Over time, social and technological developments would make baby making less and less important for the survival of the human species because attrition of babies dramatically decreased, and far more survived to adulthood then ever before.
Today we have bodies evolved to need sex, but have sociological and technological developments that make having unnecessary babies detrimental. Babies consume resources, and with most of today’s babies reaching adulthood, not all of those babies will have resources to consume.
This is why free birth control (abortion, pills, etc) is good. Having unnecessary babies causes financial strain on the family, causes strain on societal resources, increases crime, and a host of other negative consequences all of which cost money to fix. By providing free birth control you are avoiding the far more costly consequences of allowing unnecessary babies to be born.

The only thing I would like to add-no one is “pro-abortion.” We just want to make the decision for ourselves. Alternatively, there is nothing “pro-life” about the “Christian Right” since the majority are also pro death penalty, and have zero interest in helping these “lives” once they force the birth on the mother. Many also seem to be quick to jump on the repub tendency to react quickly to go to war. So, neither label is accurate. Pro-choice is good, but rather than “pro-life” they should call themselves Pro-birth since they have no interest in that “life” once birth occurs. After that, poverty, education, medical care, child care-if you can’t afford them, sucks to be you,

The whole thing is just as ironic as it is scary, because these fanatical fools could not care less about the well-being of babies once they are born. It’s quite obvious that they don’t care about the well-being of actual or potential mothers, because they are absolutely heedless about the enormous and unanticipated consequences if they get their way.

The ONLY good thing I can ever see coming out of the personhood movement is prosecution for the sake of the child if someone commits a crime against the mother and causes a miscarriage or serious birth defects. And since some states already have such laws, I think they’re doing just fine on their own and don’t need the crazier ideas attached to that.
Other than that, they’re batshit insane. I’ll take my birth control, thanks. I don’t want kids right at this very second, and it’s downright dangerous until the endometriosis is cleared out. I’d rather not risk constant miscarriage, a life-threatening pregnancy, and near-death in childbirth (a standard among the women of my family). After I do have a child? I’m telling the doctor to take out the plumbing while he’s in there. And if I can’t have any, that’s just hunky dory with me.
And while I do disagree with the idea of IV fertilization (I think we’ve overpopulated to the extreme and those who cannot naturally have children should look into adopting..there’s many children out there already born who need good homes; also, fertility and pregnancy treatments like that tend to result in multiple fetuses, and we have way more than enough Octomoms), hell if I care if anyone else gets the procedure. ‘s a free country.
And I don’t get why if a life is defined at the moment of fertilization, contraceptives would be a problem. It prevents fertilization in the first place. With condoms, there’s no sperm to meet the egg. With oral birth control, there’s no egg to meet the sperm and it’s a whole lot harder for the two to interact if they do meet. They stay their own respective sex cells. Oral birth control CAN sometimes prevent implantation of a fertilized egg, but that’s like saying that rare steak can cause food poisoning: it’s an unintended consequence and definitely isn’t what it’s used for.
Leave it to a bunch of crazies to ignore basic science.
They’ll find another way to legislate vasectomies, tube-tying, and hysterectomies, too.

in my mind this is really not about the subjugation of women themselves, doing that is only a means to an end which is having enough soldiers to fight the final war against Islam. Women would never do that voluntarily if they had a choice. I think these people are fully intent on causing the last war at some point
Kate

“Women would never do that voluntarily if they had a choice. ”
You’ve never met my adoptive mother.
She’s a diehard Catholic hell-bent on the abolishment of birth control, abortion (both elective and medically necessary), and all premarital or non-straight relationships, and insists that everyone who isn’t Christian (and moreover exclusively Catholic) is going to Hell (and it’s thus her job to turn them away from their wicked, heathen ways…including myself who merely went Anglican Catholic). She’s even so brainwashed that she insists my church is a false church unbelieving in the True Presence of Christ in the Eucharist (transubstantiation), even though three of my priests have explained to her otherwise (she was raised to think that the Episcopals were all evil, shameful pretenders to the Catholic faith).
Oh yeah. They breed ‘em crazy in Cleveland. Thank God I got out of THAT frying pan when I had the chance.

I wish you were right in saying that no woman, given the choice, would subscribe to such ideals. It’d mean my mother was forced into her way of thinking, instead of freely choosing such idiocy.
Being forced into ignorance is sad. Choosing ignorance is pathetic (and painful to the sane members of the family).
