President Obama Maintains His Dignity When Faced With Racist and Bigoted Attacks
One of the more difficult exercises for human beings is respecting another person regardless of their race, religion, or world view. For the past three years, since the rise of conservative extremism, the lack of respect among a large segment of the population for other Americans has revealed a level of contempt and hatred that is normally reserved for a hated enemy, and it informs the inherent inhumanity that is eating away at society. However, conservatives are following the lead of the political heroes who have shown nothing but contempt for the American people and especially the first African American President.
On Friday a reporter interrupted President Obama’s speech announcing that children of undocumented immigrants would not be deported, and it is a stark reminder that the opposition to the President is not his political ideology, but his race. One might even excuse the reporter’s disrespectful interruption as an isolated incident, but throughout this President’s tenure, everyone from low-class teabaggers to bigoted religious sycophants to sitting legislators have treated him like a third class citizen instead of the President of the United States.
The disrespect began in earnest when Republicans acted as if they won the 2008 general election and it continues unabated because the white racist element cannot fathom, or accept, that the American people elected an African American man to lead the country. President Obama ran, and has governed, as a Centrist who has been friendly to business, Wall Street, and especially Republicans as he has attempted bipartisanship on every one of his legislative agendas. Indeed, many of the President’s policies were once held by Republicans, and yet to show their opposition they obstructed, voted against, and used fallacious propaganda to convince the American people that the President is an interloper who illegally inhabits the position they think is reserved for a white Christian male.
What is stunning, is that despite the President’s policies that are staples of Republican ideology such as reducing taxes, slashing government spending, and maintaining a strong military, conservatives have used every means to delegitimize and denigrate the President. Republicans have not countered claims that the President was born in Kenya, is a Muslim, or a fascist dictator, and in fact have perpetuated the fallacious claims with their silence and tacit approval of every conspiracy theory and nut-case that comes along. The Republican candidate for president, Willard Romney, has taken every opportunity to convince voters that the President is lazy, over his head, and not a real American. The only reason Willard did not join in attacking the President’s past association with the Reverend Jeremiah Wright is because he is mortified of Americans looking closely at his offshoot pseudo-Christian religion.
What is incredible, no, phenomenal, is that President Obama has maintained dignity in the face of racist and bigoted attacks on his character and Republican assaults on his administration as a Socialist takeover when a normal man would lash out with vindictive retribution. Despite the obstruction to every single one of his policies to get the economy up and running and Americans working again, President Obama has taken the high road and attempted to work with Republicans to help all Americans and it is testament to his character and devotion to fulfilling his oath of office.
Republicans like John Boehner have impugned the President for not working to create jobs, and yet the GOP has obstructed every jobs bill, stimulus, and working American’s tax cuts under the guise of deficit reduction and budget cuts. There is a philosophy that the Republican assault on social safety nets is little more than retribution targeting Americans who, more likely than not, voted for the President in 2008. One of the themes of the Republican primary was that the President was taking money from good, white Christian Americans and giving it to minorities as a form of reparations to his people (read Black) even though white Americans depend on social safety nets as much, or more, than African Americans.
The Republican, teabagger, and religious extremist’s opposition and devout hatred for the President is blatant racism. Last week during an interview with a retired Republican living on Social Security and dependent on Medicare for healthcare, they said they would much rather a corporation control the government than a dirty nig***. The man attempted to stop himself from uttering the N-word, but it was too late and when asked if that was his only objection to the President’s policies, he said absolutely, because “the Constitution did not allow for an African American to be president.” When asked where in the Constitution the requirement was located, the man calmly said “this country was ordained by god to be controlled by the white race,” and that “Osama is illegal.”
It is without doubt that if President Obama was a white man, conservatives would hail him as a hero in the image of Ronald Reagan. It is a sad commentary that a man of President Obama’s stature, intelligence, and even-keeled resolve has been the subject of such rancid racism in a country like the United States. There were many Americans who believed that President Obama’s election spelled the end to racism in America, but instead, it has increased to a point that many conservatives are talking openly of a coming race war. American racism may not be as blatant and open as before the Civil Rights movement, but it has never been more prevalent. When the President of the United States is called a liar during the State of the Union address, and schools across the country refused to air his message to school children to work and study hard, it indicated that it was not the President’s policies or agenda that rankled conservatives, it was his race.
Americans should feel abject shame at the level of disrespect and contempt aimed at President Obama and obviously, many do; however, the lack of outrage in the main stream media and tacit approval and cooperation of Republicans in Congress and state legislatures defines a disease that keeps America from being exceptional or a great country, and whether targeting minorities or the legally elected President of the United States, racism, like conservatism, is eating America alive.

The President also “maintains his dignity” when faced with overwhelming evidence that the people who elected him, and whom he is sworn to serve, disagree with some of his policies. The limited U.S. involvement in the mess in Libya comes to mind in this connection. In such cases, that President’s unshakable aplomb really amounts to little more than arrogance.

How weird that you should cite the stance he took on Libya, which was entirely vindicated by events, as an example of “arrogance”.
If ever there was an area where the President should lead, and not just follow public opinion, it is in the area of foreign policy. Most of the public don’t know remotely enough in this area to have a credible, strategically intelligent viewpoint.
Incidentally, what would Romney have done differently over Libya? Does he still think Russia is the number one geopolitical foe? And has he grasped yet how dangerous it was to blunder into that sensitive situation in China regarding the blind dissident to try to score party-political points?

What do you suggest he do, Robert? There are millions of people like you, each with his or her own agenda, and most of these have agendas that would conflict with 60% of the agendas of other citizens. It will seldom be possible for a president to please all of the people in the country. This man has been in office long enough to identify the most urgent priorities and tackle those as best he can on his own, because he gets precious little help from Congress. This situation is deliberate. The Republicans have admitted it many times. He can’t please all of the people with their conflicting demands–not even the extreme wing of his own party–but he continues to react to their expressed needs and demands with grace and dignity.

Yes, because it was just terrible that the U.S. didn’t cost one member of the military to lose his/her life or to return home maimed, saved the nation billions, and was successful in getting European nations and the Arab League to oppose a leader who was also a Muslim. Shame on the president for being fiscally conservative, concerned about our military personnel and for working cooperatively with other nations.

Robert, it is hardly arrogance. No one agrees with another human being 100 percent of the time.
I am sure you disagree with your wife/girlfriend, your parents, who ever is close to you. Do you consider them arrogant because they have a different take on some subject then you?
I have disagreed with the president on issues but, do not see his different thinking from mine as arrogant.
It is arrogant to think the president is going to agree with your personal thinking alone all the time.
Therefore, I’d say the arrogant tag belongs on your back instead

However the President’s reluctance to steer clear away from his predecessor casts him as someone without the wherewithal to turn the page and write a new chapter in world history. Decency should also mean speaking and acting on key issues such as the closing of Guantanamo, reducing US’s military muscle overseas, confronting the Wall Street beast with determination. I know Mr. President that justice ranks really high in your worldview but please do not be so gringo. I do want and those from outside of the US are praying that you’ll be given a second term, but this time to push the warfare darkness away.

Alvin,
The president did act on closing GITMO. He signed the Executive Order, but Congress blocked funding for the relocation of the detainees. Instead of telling the president to take action that he has already taken, I respectfully suggest that you write your congressman and senators and tell them to vote ‘Yes’ on funding the closure of GITMO.

Many of the Bush policies were already set in stone before President Obama came into office. First, there was the fact that Bush involved the US in two wars, neither of which was funded, but both of which would continue to contribute to the national debt throughout the next decade (a fact conveniently erased from the collective memory of the Republican Party). The timetable for withdrawal from Iraq had already been written into an agreement with the Iraqi government, so the combat troops stayed in place until August, 2010, and the remainder of Americans left December 2011. This wasn’t Obama’s timetable, but it was the timetable that Bush had agreed upon with the Iraqis, so it was respected. The switch of focus to Afghanistan was a campaign promise (look at the last Obama/McCain debate) and should not come as a surprise to anyone who had followed the debates. Economic promises made during the campaign by Obama did not reflect the reality that the two wars, the Bush tax breaks, and the Medicare Part D drug coverage deal with Big Pharma (which excluded CMS from negotiation of prices)were unfunded and would therefore impact the US deficit and debt for more than a decade beyond.

The failure to close Gitmo is not a failure of the president. It is a failure due to Congress. President Obama signed an executive order to close Gitmo, but it needed the approval of Congress. When time came for Congress to vote on the measure, it was rejected. This is a weakness inherent in some executive orders–they require congressional approval. The president has tried several times since to close Gitmo, but Congress has thwarted every attempt. I wish the EO would have been enough, but because Gitmo is related to defense spending, it wasn’t.

Just got back from reading the discussions on President Obama’s latest immigration policy announcements at Fox Nation.
I have never seen such blatant hatred for a sitting president before. The level of willful ignoranace of the posters on that site is truly staggering. Facts evidently do not matter to the vast majority those people. Misconceptions, half truths and outright lies seem to be the norm and provide plenty of fuel for their hate filled postings.
I fear that America will never recover from the political division that we now find ourselves embroiled in.

Racism isn’t all of it. President Clinton, another centrist Democrat, came in for quite a bit of hate himself. He was even accused of the murder of Vince Foster by his enemies.
C.
Jun. 18th, 2012 at 3:59 am
Sorry Christopher, but racism has absolutely been most of it –
The attacks, disrespect and obstruction this President has been subjected to has been at levels so historic and unprecedented and surely a thousand times worse than and more personal and hateful than anything Bill Clinton ever encountered.
It is even more important to note that where Bill Clinton had Democrats rallying to his support in the face of republican attacks, no such thing has happened for President Obama.
Instead the republican attacks, disrespect and sabotage of this President have only been supported, amplified and validated by so-called “progressives”, some Democrats and even Bill Clinton and his wing of the Democratic party.
We can all continue to pretend not to notice the stark differences not only in the nature of attacks on Clinton vs. Obama but also the absence of any defense offered on behalf of President Obama by so-called Democrats – Bill Clinton included.
It is important to note rather disconcertingly, the newly minted dubious collaborations between Democrats, “progressives” and the President’s most rabid attackers on the right-
And the fact that these supposed “progressives”, Democrats/Liberals are also the additional sources of the most vile and hostile attacks upon and disrespect of this President – outside of the predictable hostility of the republican opposition – is enough to cause give any thinking person pause.
So no, it isn’t nearly anything or even remotely similar to what Bill Clinton had to deal with.
Christopher
Jun. 18th, 2012 at 7:39 am
Paranoid much?
There are progressives disappointed that the President has not been as progressive as they hoped; I’ve been one of them at times. However, the idea that they have made common cause with the right is absolutely proposterous. President Clinton has been one of President Obama’s biggest defenders lately, in part I suspect because he does know how it feels to be on the receiving end of such attacks. I don’t recall any progressives asking to see the birth certificate or otherwise being the source or ally for the wingnuts.

No. That is exactly how Stalin consolidated his control of the Soviet Union between Lenin’s death in 1923 and 1927: by playing, “let’s you and him fight” with the smaller parties. That is indeed a high-machiavellian tactic, and an intending totalitarian entity will indeed both co-opt formerly genuine opposition leaders and infiltrate political saboteurs into the ranks of opposing organizations.
The psychiatrist said to his patient: “Joe, I have good news and bad news for you. The good news is, you’re not paranoid. The bad news is, they really are out to get you.”
C.
Jun. 19th, 2012 at 3:28 am
@ Christopher,
Certainly not paranoid and absolutely certain that unlike you, so many others see clearly what has played out these past fours years – and agree with me.
So-called “progressives” have been just as disrespectful and hateful in their denigration of and very personal attacks against this President.
Loudest are those who have designated themselves spokespersons for the “progressive” movement. I’m sure you know quite well who they are – and any differences between them and the attackers on the right are now barely distinguishable.
What you characterize as expressions of “disappointment” have come across unmistakably to casual observers as blatant in its patent disrespect and personal attacks and insults on the person of President Obama.
They seem to share the same desire to see the President defeated and have been united in their dubious support of some Republican candidates – Ron Paul, Huntsman, Gary Johnson etc.
And Bill Clinton clearly can’t relate since people like you and other impossible to assuage or please “progressives” who find unending fault with President Obama, still treat Clinton with much deference, cut him unending slack and accord him every respect even as you disrespect and rail against President Obama for not quickly fixing and undoing all the decades of damage he inherited – including some key ones that were very much courtesy of Bill Clinton.
I think you forget rather conveniently that it was the Hillary Clinton campaign that started the whole Birther meme against then Senator Obama in their desperate bid to cast him as “other”.
They practically laid the ground work for the current Republican Birther campaign against President Obama.
Which could explain Bill Clinton’s inability to strongly and unequivocally speak out against the Birthers or denounce Donald Trump – opting instead to tell how much he liked Donald Trump and highlight his and Hillary’s friendship with Trump. The jolly fellow New Yorkers tripe and the good times they still share on their golf outings together etc.
I can’t even begin to imagine a situation where if the tables were turned, President Obama would publicly rave about enjoying playing golf with and really liking some prominent asshole making the media rounds assailing the Clintons and peddling personally damaging falsehoods about them – like that they were responsible for the murder of Vince Foster.
There would be unending outrage at President Obama just for that.
So many of us remain unconvinced and have yet to witness this full throated and consistent support for or defense of President Obama from Bill Clinton that you speak of. The one time at a recent joint event doesn’t count for much – not especially when he publicly contradicts and steps all over the President Obama’s message the very next day.
The idea that he and Hillary with all the supposed respect they command and influence they wield in their circle, are unable to rein in their closest associates, staff and friends, who continue to be some of the most hostile and publicly rabid detractors of this President, is rather weird.
In the end, as angry as the unprovoked attacks from the right against this President have made me, it is the lack of a loud, clear consistent and unambiguous defense from the left and instead a coordinated piling on, that leave me incredibly resentful and furious.
It is pertinent to remind you Christopher and the perennially “disappointed progressives” and all the left-leaning saboteurs and attackers of this President, that this President is not damaged in isolation.
Like it or not, the future and fate of the Democratic party is intrinsically tied to Barack Obama –
And attacking and chipping away at this President not only diminishes his capacity to successfully rally support for and implement the various causes “progressives” claim they want;
But even as important, completely turns off appalled and resentful supporters of this President – a solid 60% of the party – who will not be forgetting, forgiving or rallying any time soon for or with any of the now clearly identified so-called “progressives” and their cohorts, who have actively worked against President Obama every step of the way.
