No apologies necessary. That was a beautiful, inspired, and very cogent post. Those of us who AREN’T millionaires (or even thirty-thousand-aires) DO contribute to society, and have as significant an amount of ‘skin in the game’ as our apparent corporate masters do, if not more. The big boys have socialized risk and privatized profits for far too long.

Two additional points *must* be made in every discussion about taxes.
1) We must re-claim the definition of a contributing member of society. The republicans have defined it as someone who pays federal income tax. All others must now “share the burden”, and “have skin in the game.” This is their justification for raising taxes on the poor and middle class. It is not enough (though true and valuable!) to point out that those people pay all sorts of other taxes because that is to accept their primary premise that to be a contributing member of society, you must have a federal income tax obligation.

Many people who either do not have federal income tax withheld, or who receive a refund of withheld taxes work hard every day of their lives for little pay and contribute their time, talents, and efforts to their schools, communities, and nation.

How dare the republicans say that they must start bearing their share of the burden, that they must start contributing? The republicans need to be forced to respond to the reality that other things matter just as much as money!

2) We must also re-claim the definition of success, which the republicans have defined as someone who has amassed a lot of money, and that efforts to tax them are efforts to “punish the successful.” I believe that someone who has loving friends and family, who takes joy in contributing to their community, and who desires nothing more than a roof over the head and a modest, dignified standard of living in their old age, is in fact, a successful person. We must ask again, why do the republicans believe it is okay to punish a person successful in every way except in accumulating money?
