Rachel Maddow Busts David Gregory’s Rape Dodge for Romney
On Meet The Press today, David Gregory was caught red handed trying to distance Mitt Romney from Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock by Rachel Maddow.

GREGORY: Fair– fair point, Rachel, one of the things you’re seeing it was Tina Fey speaking this week in New York who– who seem to me sort of strike that cord about be– going beyond abortion, about do you trust women enough to let them make decisions about their own lives, this is how– how she talked about it?
(Videotape, Center for Reproductive Rights Inaugural Gala, Wednesday)
TINA FEY: If I have to listen to one more grave-faced man with a two dollar haircut explain to me what rape is, I’m going to lose my mind.
(End videotape)GREGORY: And frankly to be– to be fair, I mean, the Romney campaign is probably singing the same thing. I’m going to lose my mind if we had to keep talking about rape in this election, because it– its association with the Republican Party that he does want to be associated with.
MS. MADDOW: Right. But then, he picked Paul Ryan. They have the fight over forced ultrasounds, the government telling you that you need to have a medically unnecessary procedure at the order of the state regardless of what you want and regardless of what your doctor says. And then he picked a guy, who picked a forced ultrasound bill for the country, Paul Ryan was onboard with that. Paul Ryan was a cosponsor with Todd Akin with bill to redefine rape. Paul Ryan was a cosponsor with bill to have personhood federally, which would not only ban all abortion it would ban in vitro fertilization. It would ban most hormonal forms of birth control. If you wanted to avoid this fight, don’t put Paul Ryan on the ticket. There’s a reason that Paul Ryan has been in Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina…
David Gregory was trying to, “be fair” to Romney by claiming that he shouldn’t be lumped in with the legitimate rape and rape is God’s will zanies who populate the Republican Party, but Maddow busted him on it. Gregory was trying to sell the myth of moderate Mitt while ignoring the fact that both Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan share Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock’s beliefs.
There is a reason why Romney won’t pull his endorsement of Mourdock. Romney may disagree with what Mourdock said, but he shares many of the underlying beliefs of his party. Rachel Maddow rightly stopped Gregory in his tracks when he started floating talking points that sounded like they came directly from the Romney campaign.
Gregory’s implication that Mitt Romney doesn’t want the association with that part of the Republican Party was completely false. If Romney didn’t want to be associated with it, why did he choose Paul Ryan as his running mate? If Romney wanted nothing to do with it, he would have told Mourdock to take down the ad, and pulled his endorsement.
The truth is that Romney wants the association with the far right, but he doesn’t want the broader electorate to know that he holds those views. Usually, GOP talking point machine Gregory would be able to get away with his flawed questions based on conservative positions, but Rachel Maddow was there to offer up the truth.
David Gregory’s biases are well known, so it was a treat to see his “fairness” (code for Republican talking points) offset by a strong dose of truth and reality delivered by Rachel Maddow.

This isn’t the first time David Gregory tried to discreetly show his bias and jeopardize any journalistic integrity. He isn’t a worthy successor to Tim R. on MTP and there should be petition to get him off!

My thoughts exactly! I’ve been sorely disappointed in David Gregory’s performance during this election cycle. He’s definitely no Tim Russert!

“To be fair…” now means, “I know what I’m about to say isn’t true but I have to say it because the other side is saying it and I want to be ‘fair.’” Yeah, you repeat a lie because the other side said it knowing full well it is a lie but it’s okay because it’s FAIR.
Give me a break.
Glad Rachel called Gregory out.

Whenever I hear, “To be fair” or “To be honest” coming out of a republican mouth, I know it means, time to dismiss, denigrate, dodge and deny…
Especially in terms of anything dealing with women’s issues.
Or, how about the little love pat on the arm to the ladies, the ubiquitous cliché “There, there, all is fair in love and war”…but, as a republican male, I DO mean war; I DO mean to threaten your life with ruin if you don’t shut up you uppity bitc*.

You’re so right! However, David’s not alone in this. I cringe every time I hear Anderson Cooper (and others) utter that phrase. The concept of ‘fair’ has lost its meaning in what passes for journalism today.

IMHO, Rachel would be a far better Meet the Press moderator than David Gregory. I used to watch MTP all the time when Tim Russert was alive. Now, the only time I watch is when an episode is referenced in a blog.

NBC would try to stymie Rachael if she were host of MTP.

Maddow a moderator????? Come on!! She’s as radical & condescending as it gets. And she won’t cover the Libya cover-up because it will hurt her candidate. It’s a joke that she’s anchors election coverage as she’s as BIAS as it gets…

What Libya coverup?
Can you explain it to us?

I agree with Tina Fey. I’m sick and tired of middle-aged and older white men defining and redefining rape. And Mourdoch’s feigned chagrin at having to conclude that a baby born out of rape is a gift from God is the final straw. David Gregory misunderstood or, more likely, misrepresented Tina Fey’s remark. It’s not that she’s had enough of the discussion of the subject, it’s that she’s had enough (more than enough, I’m sure) of men talking about issues that affect women, and only women.
From the first week of the current Congress, rape, its definition, and pregnancy and/or its termination, have been the only topics of choice among Congressional Republicans. For having run on the issue of “jobs” somehow they all lost interest in that topic on their way to the Capitol Building. This is simply a subject that men should avoid especially in legislatures. None of us women want to hear what men think about it and we sure do not want them defining and legislating about it. They are the perpetrators.

Agreed, Beaglemom. And nary a word about male responsibilty, keeping their flies closed, owning up to a pregnancy and paying support. And what about the 30 states who give RAPISTS rights over any fetus? That insist rapists must sign off on any abortion or giving the child up for adoption? That allow the criminal access to the child forever, which penalizes the victim? Men are so callous. I hope the GOP goes down in flames Nov. 6, never to rise again. I am tired of the lies and hate.

Actually, the expression started a long time ago on SNL during a skit with Jane Curtain and Dan Akaroyd
(sp) who portrayed dueling TV commentators…
The line was actually “Jane you stupid, ignorant slut”…

This isn’t about abortion, or rape as an acceptable exception to an unacceptable total ban on abortion. This IS a fundamental issue of Equality.
Do woman have the right to control their own lives, not just their bodies, but their very destiny? Does the woman, or the state, have the right to control if, when, and how many times she a mother? The person or government, who controls this is controlling the woman’s economic destiny, her career destiny, and her health destiny.
To take that control away from the woman and have the STATE impose whatever views it has on motherhood… Is not only draconian, it is UnAmerican, to its very core,
Whoever votes for Romney votes for Oppression of Women. This has been true for every Republican since Reagan.

I can’t help wondering whether Romney had any say in who he was paired with. I suspect big money told him Ryan was who he was getting.

with all the debate of who has the right to control a woman’s right to choose please visit the above link for what is the perhaps the best argument I have seen to show how unfair it is is for the R party to expect women to have their rapists child. If it I didn’t copy it right please take the time to type it in to visit it. It is amzing though how many people still think Mitt Romney is prochoice wake up please he iss not nor has he EVER been and he also makes no EXCEPTIONS. No matter what he says there is plenty of evidence to prove he just says what people want to hear to get their votes!

Kick off Gregory (he never should’ve gotten that job in the first place), and give the job to Rachel (who should’ve gotten the job in the first place).
I have not watched MTP since NBC disgraced Mr. Russert and gave his job to David Gregory. He’s an embarrassment to journalism, and to NBC.

I am of two thoughts: One, I hope they do send him a little “Trojan Horse” to show him they mean business. Two, they let him try and then undo his dirty work right behind him…let him watch his screen and scream “NOOOO!” Whatever they have up their sleeves, god bless’em and god’s speed “Anon?”

I dont watch meet the press anymore not since Tim Russertt died. I think Chuck Todd would have been better for the program then David Gregory.
Gregory does whatever he is told based on his ratings. Thank God they get Rachel, Lawrence,Chris and Ed on there everynow and then.
They speak the truth, they aren’t worried about their ratings or the ownership, they are there to report responsible news.

I get the privilege of voting for Mourdock’s opponent, and I am so disgusted with the GOP. I don’t understand how anybody can vote for a party that has written off the vast majority of Americans.
Fuck you Mourdock and the silver spoon you rode in on. Fuck your god too because you and it are slime-sucking soulless control freaks.

We can only assume that Mitt will follow church doctrine since he is still a bishop of the Mormon church.
No unwed babies, no birth control and no abortions.
He excommunicated women for keeping their babies conceived out of wedlock.

I can’t bring myself to watch MTP anymore. It makes me ill literally, but I’m glad Maddow is on challenging the lies and bringing the truth in spite of the loaded up GOP talking points. Rachel Maddow, Ed or Lawrence O’Donnell would be the best to replace Gregory. But that will never happen if Romney wins and Chuck Todd must be vying for Romney’s Press secretary. I can’t watch this stuff anymore. This election is extremely important. These are life and death issues whether you’re talking about pre existing conditions, war or rape. I can’t understand to save my life why anyone would or could vote for any Republican that’s running for office or reelection. I’m so afraid they’re going to steal the election. I keep thinking the polls must be wrong or fixed and then I hear a supposed sane person talking about voting for Romney and I sink into deep depression. It can’t all be racism. I can’t believe that people could possibly buy into this many blatant and consistent lies and secrecy. Where is our democracy? Where are the Americans? Who are these brainwashed people voting for the GOP? They don’t know that they are voting for rape, death, poverty, outsoucing, Supreme Court extremism, loss of women’s rights, civil rights, gay rights, voting rights, children’s rights, employee rights and the protection of our elderly???????? God help us. The MSM has done a huge disservice to the US. I know other countries are asking what in the world happened to the America they know? Now we have racists, extremists, bigots, thieves, and home grown terrorists trying to steal the vote.

I believe this visit by Maddow to MTP MAY have been an audition to take over MTP. Maddow has consistently pushed issues back at Gregory at multiple sites (MSNBC coverage, MTP).
Hopefully, MTP folks were paying attention to the clear difference between them.

Since Willard Romney has willingly surrounded himself with the likes of Todd Akin, Richard Mourdock, and of course, Paul Ryan, it’s obvious that he shares their views even if he doesn’t come out and scream that he does. He has been quite glad to cast his lot with the most reactionary elements of the GOP, and he lacks the moral courage to resoundingly reject their nonsense. So, he’s in no position to complain about the fact that his choice to align himself with these loons reflects on him.

Good for Rachel. About a month ago Rachel was on Gregory’s show and she was interupted and filibustered continuously by a Republican from CNN named Castalano [I'm not sure of the spelling] and Gregory did not do a thing about it.
The best replacement for Gregory would be Tim Russert’s son.
