Rachel Maddow Calls Out Sen.Ted Cruz, ‘That’s Some Brass, Senator’
Rachel Maddow called out the “brass” of Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz for claiming that decorated veterans Senator John Kerry (D-MA) and former Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) don’t support the military. Why? Because Senator Cruz has never served in the military.
Watch here:
Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
Senator John Kerry has been nominated and now confirmed as the new Secretary of State and former Senator Chuck Hagel has been nominated as the Secretary of Defense. Republicans have been reaching deep to try to block both nominations (it’s what they do).
Kerry, the son of an Army Air Corps veteran, is the recipient of the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts earned while serving in Vietnam. Hagel is the recipient of two Purple Hearts while an infantry squad leader in the Vietnam War.
Whereas, Rafael Edward “Ted” Cruz is a junior tea party Senator from Texas who never served in the military. Ted Cruz was born in Canada to a Cuban immigrant (his father) to the U.S., he did very well at Princeton and then went to Harvard Law School. Good for him. Naturally, given his expertise on the matter and his junior status in the Senate, he had no problem saying that two decorated war veterans don’t support the military.
Rachel didn’t take to that too well. She said, “It was therefore pretty breathtaking when Senator Ted Cruz voiced his opposition to Senator Kerry’s nomination to the State Department and to the nomination of Chuck Hagel to the Defense Department. Chuck Hagel received two purple hearts in Vietnam and walks around every day with shrapnel in his chest.
It was pretty remarkable when we heard the reason that Senator Ted Cruz said that those two wounded combat veterans are not going to get his vote in the Senate.”
Ms. Maddow then rolled a clip of Ted Cruz speaking at what appears to be a National Institute Review event.
Cruz lectured, “We’ve got two pending nominations, John Kerry and Chuck Hagel. Both of whom are very prominently —”
An audience member yelled out, “Anti-us!”
Cruz is very amused with himself. He might be doing stand up comedy, the set-up is that great.
Cruz preened, “— less than ardent fans of the U.S. military.”
Rachel deadpaned, “They don’t love the military, not like he does. He’s the junior Senator from Texas. Ah, there are no medals for a declaration like that, but technically speaking, I think what we’re supposed to say is, ‘That’s some brass, Senator.’”
It seems there’s nothing a tea party representative does better than self-aggrandizingly elevate their own stature while heaping clueless scorn on others who have earned their positions through merit and bravery.
Cruz hasn’t let his freshman status stop him from making a tea fool of himself. Fresh in the Senate, Cruz accused gun safety advocates of exploiting the Connecticut school massacre. This, of course, endeared him to tea partiers who can’t stop talking about what a great presidential candidate he’d be. The only problem is that he might not be eligible — that is, if we go by tea party standards, since he was born in Canada and his father is Cuban. When Politico pointed this out, Fox News claimed Politico had gone “birther” on Cruz.

Why oh Why must we suffer fools.I am not going to call this teabagging a idiot he already has done that to himself. As a disabled veteran I am not going to hold it against him because he didnt serve. It is a volunteer army after all.But how dare he say that someone who left blood and part of their humanity on the battlefield anti -military?
You know Sen. Cruz what is anti military?Sending young men and women off to war and then try to cut their benefits when they come home! You know what is anti-military?Greasing the palms of companies to build unsafe facilities foe the men and women who give their lives for chickenshit snake oil salesmen such as yourself to live your carefree life which BTW we the taxpayers pay for.

No, because “conservative comedy” is an oxymoron.

I have watched, in total horror, this smug son of a bitch rise in the teabitches ranks.
He is going to make Allen West look like a rational human being, and this cancer is a senator???
What is so dangerous with this wasted sperm is the fact he can gum up the works in the senate by putting a hold on important legislation. This is where the real terror of what this bitch is going to do to our country. (I hate to insult the word “bitch”, but I find no useful word to express my utter and complete contempt of this gathering of bacteria called a human). He can hold up much needed legislation by just putting a secret hold on it. It is part of the “rules of order” allowed in the senate.
We will see and hear frequently this disgusting excuse make headline after headline in the future, and all of it will be to stop Obama, Obama care, or any legislative effort to assist the poor or unemployed.
This is one guy that will be screamed at in this blog often.
My only problem, I am sick to my stomach with his lies already, and we’re not even a month into this next Congressional term. It is only going to get worse, and he will turn out to be a leader in the GOP. Be afraid, be very afraid. (Sorry for all the cursing in this particular rant, it’s not my usual way, but I really do hate this son of a bitch, and have watched his political climb in Texas with a great deal of horror. I hope there is some way to neutralize his legislative agenda.)

And yet Mr. Cruz turns right around and argues that his constituents need to be armed to the teeth with battle field level weaponry in order to defeat that very same military he so ardently supports when it comes to take away their freedoms. He can’t have it both ways, yet he is eager to shower the military with limitless funding while supporting citizens arming themselves with assault rifles and high capacity magazines to defeat it. Crazy.

Makes you wonder just how much funding he is getting from the N.R.A. Gun Owners of America and other extremist right wing firearms groups.

First, thank you for your service, VIETNAM VETERAN ED HINOJOSA. It always seems that it’s those who have not served that are so eager to send our troops into war to satisfy their thirst for power. One of the reasons Cruz opposes Chuck Hagel is because Hagel thinks that sending our fellow citizens off to fight senseless wars shouldn’t be a frivolous undertaking, and I agree. I’m sick of the congress-members who don’t value the lives of our troops or our veterans. It’s a disgrace that those who haven’t served feel they have the right to say ugly sh*t about those who have. If anyone are cowards, it’s them. While you, John Kerry, and Chuck Hagel went to Vietnam to serve your country, many, like Romney, kept themselves out of harm’s way. I have two brothers who served in the Marines and the Army during the Vietnam War, one who served in Desert Storm, and one who served in the DMZ on the North Korea-South Korea border, so the only thing someone like Cruz can do for me is sit down and STFU.

Thank you for this profound reminder of the horrors and hardships our young men went through in Vietnam. Thank you for your service. Thank you for calling out yet another chickenhawk who did not have to do anything for his adopted country but is only too happy to send YOUR kids anywhere to be put in harm’s way.
What an idiot this man is. Sorry he’s your Senator.

Thank you for your service. That Cruz could have the audacity to vote against the confirmation of Kerry, a war veteran and hero with years of reknowned and respected government service, says more about Cruz than we would like to know. Same with his opposition to Hagel, another hero willing to sacrifice his life for others and is walking around with shrapnel from 40 plus years ago in his chest.

Yogi u r so right. I agree with you. I could not have said it better myself. It’s disgraceful that people like Cruz and Rubio will use their title of “SENATOR” to exploit the rest of us and engrandize their agenda. Being latino and GOP is like being bi-polar and schizo at the same time.
As a latino I feel that we deserve better.
Have a great day!!!

Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio are both members of the Hispanic “lucky sperm” club. They’re both of Cuban parentage and so were allowed into the US the “legal way”. They’re real example of “We’ve got ours – so fuck you”.

The folks in Texas need to wake up. They keep electing these people, who are carving out laws that effect our lives. These two Sens. voted against John Kerry who is a decorated Vet. and now Sen. Cruz won’t vote for Chuck Hagel. Why? Because he wants the to show the teabaggers that he has brass. His comment shows that he really is a A**.

Thanks for the information about Cruz’ heritage, Ms. Sarah Jones. I love accumulating opposition research! Cruz had better make the most of his time in the Senate, because he’ll never reside at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, no matter what Fox News says, because he’s not a natural born citizen! His performance should be quite entertaining when immigration reform comes up for debate and a vote in the Senate. I’ll be keeping my eye on him and waiting with bated breath to witness how he, an immigrant, will spin his expected opposition to IR.

As a veteran of both Vietnam and, thirty years later, Iraq, I am disturbed by the lack of understanding and critical analysis displayed, not only by my former brothers (and sisters) in arms, but the vitriol of minority against minority. First, you don’t have to have gone to war to understand it; true, it usually solidifies a bond between those of us that did, but the micro nature of our experience doesn’t necessarily mean we understand it any better, it doesn’t give us any special insight into the big picture, only a visceral grasp of the horror. That Kerry went to Vietnam is laudable, that he LIED about his experience there is not. That you choose to overlook that simply because he’s of you political leaning is not to your credit and ultimately does you a disservice. Secondly, that minorities would excoriate minority simply because they don’t tow the line of political correctness is, frankly, sad. By doing so you promote the very racism you decry, and confirm the worst criticisms against you. Does color truly equal party?

Kerry and Hagel were critical of our extended presence in Iraq, hence they must hate the military.
Welcome to the intellectually-barren tea party faction of the modern GOP.
