Republican Desperation Grows as Benghazi Backfires and Scandal Talk Fizzles
Benghazi gate is not going as Republicans planned, and in fact, the failure to gain traction on their narrative is further compelling Republicans to hysterics. Since they drew so much attention to this issue, courtesy of the need to defend Romney’s Libya debacle just hours after the attack, the media is now paying attention just in time to catch the GOP crazy in full bloom.
It was impossible to miss John McCain’s growing desperation yesterday, as his plans to bring down Obama backfired and the narrative of the day became him skipping the very briefing that would have answered his questions. Trending on Yahoo all day was “John McCain Missed Briefing While Slamming Obama Over Benghazi Attack”. Alexa treated him no better.
Embarrassed and humiliated, the Senator screamed at a CNN for pointing out that while he appeared on TV to talk about how he needed more information about Benghazi, he missed his own committee briefing on Benghazi.
Asked to comment, he said, “I have the right as a senator to have no comment and who the hell are you to tell me I can or not?” Followed up by, “I’m upset that you keep badgering me.”
Then, Republicans in a House Foreign Affairs hearing ratcheted up their accusations to full scale crazy, likening what the Obama administration has done on Benghazi to being worse than Watergate and repeatedly accusing him of lying.
Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) bordered on hysteria about how “this” was not just some cover up of a third-rate Watergate burglary, “What is clear is that this administration, including the president himself, has intentionally misinformed, read that LIED, to the American people in the aftermath of this tragedy… This is not simply a cover up of a third-rate burglary.”
The ranting continued with other Republicans chiming in.
The problem is that as Republicans have escalated the charges, the facts aren’t backing them up. Suggesting that this “cover up” (not proven, there is not even any factual reason to suggest this other than political dreams of a deeply embarrassed party) is worse than a Watergate demonstrates how far Republicans have gone off the rails in their attempt to get one good smear on this President.
Not only is the intelligence community backing up that their assessment changed as new information came in, but the video of the attacks showed pretty much what the intelligence community has been saying and demonstrated why it was so confusing to determine what happened, given that there appear to be two attacks possibly driven by different motives.
Also, Petraeus killed their conspiracy meme yesterday. That’s dead in the water.
Soledad O’Brien humiliated GOP Rep. Joe Heck of Nevada on CNN yesterday just by letting him talk. She pointed out that his argument that Ambassador Rice should be blocked from nomination because she repeated the intelligence given to her but was not in a position to know better, whereas Condi Rice knew better when she misled the public into war with Iraq, was actually more of a defense of Ambassador Rice. This has been John McCain’s basic argument as well.
O’BRIEN: Let’s walk through that more slowly — let me walk through that more slowly so you don’t lose me. You’re saying the issue in both cases, weapons of mass destruction and information intelligence coming to the U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice, both cases the information was wrong. What you take exception with is what the White House did later?
HECK: Exactly.
…
O’BRIEN: I feel like you’re saying, from your own comments, that Susan Rice had nothing to do with either of those things. She didn’t have something to do with the intelligence failures, which I believe you just said. And it looks as if she had no knowledge at the time. Why would you possibly blame her then?HECK: I’m not blaming Ambassador Rice.
But he was sent to CNN to blame Ambassador Rice. Fail.
Why is Benghazi Gate backfiring so badly on Republicans? While it’s true that the facts don’t support their outrageous accusations, that never stopped Republicans before. Remember the last tinfoil hat conspiracy theory that was all the rage in right wing circles – the Fast and Fail scandal of a decade!11!!
Epistemic closure is biting the Republicans hard, just as it destroyed Mitt Romney in the foreign policy debate. Republicans believe Fox News narratives, and they don’t realize how crazy they sound to the rest of the world. Because they believe it, they get more and more hysterical as time goes on.
They are also not used to being called out by the media, or President Obama, or Democrats. All three of those things are changing.
The media is challenging their claims and calling them on hypocrisies, President Obama has a new don’t mess with me attitude, and Democrats are telling Republicans if they want to know what went wrong, look in a mirror.
The President no longer has to run for any office and is emboldened by the mandate, Democrats are similarly emboldened and the media also got the message that the Democrats in really and truly in power and in favor with the people more than the Republicans. These facts drove Republicans over the edge until they showed their hands yesterday. They now have to back up charges of deliberate lying and a cover up bigger than Watergate, and they have to prove that this was not only a lie, but a bigger and more damaging lie than lying us into a war that killed thousands. Good luck with that.
Expect more hysteria from Republicans as their attempts to get everyone else on board with their trumped up charges and flimsy arguments fail. No one is talking about the scandal of Benghazi, they are talking about how John McCain was screaming on TV about not knowing what was revealed in the hearing he missed because he was screaming on TV.

I am not entirely sure how this could be worse than Watergate.
in reading about this attack you can ask yourself what more security inside the compounds would’ve done. They probably would’ve died right along with everyone else because of how the attacks were done and the weapons used.
the GOP doesn’t care what the facts are going to show. They don’t care that they said nothing when 38 people died in embassy attacks while George W. Bush was in office
It’s okay with me if they want to make utter fools of themselves

John McCain knows all about incompetence, getting Americans killed and then participating in a cover-up. He is directly responsible for the launch of a Zuni missile while sitting in his A-4 on the deck of the USS Forestal on July 29th, 1967, that killed 27 American servicemen and wounded over 100 more. Johnny “wet-start” McCain cooked off the missile because he deliberately “wet-started” his A-4E in order to troll the pilot sitting in the plane behind his. (“Wet-starts” shoot a large flame from the tail of the aircraft). When McCain “wet-started” his A-4, he managed to cook off a missile on the plane parked behind his, thus setting the whole thing in motion. However, instead of being court marshaled / sent to Leavenworth like anybody else would have been, McCain’s father just happened to be Commander-in-Chief of US Naval Forces Europe and managed to cover the whole thing up; thus, John McCain was able to get away with criminally negligent homicide. The Forrestal incident was the deadliest fire in U.S. Navy history. This is the man who is now attempting to frame President Obama for killing 4 Americans, when ole’ wet start Johnny himself has the blood of dozens of Americans on his hands. How anybody takes him seriously is beyond me.

Thank you for sharing this information. I was not aware of this incident in McCain’s past. I am pretty sure most Americans are not aware either. This needs to be put out there. Most people only know that he was a Vietnam POW who lived to tell the tale.

I am no defender of McCain as a politician, but you comment is so very wrong.
Read the incident report and watcg the video.
Watching the video, you can clearly see the positioning of his aircraft could not initiate what you claim, his jet was positioned with the tail pointing overboard. If he had started his aircraft in the manner you claim, the only potential accident would have been cooking a couple of seagulls.
You comments are as misinformed as those made by the GOP that you are trying to skewer

I agree with Jon.
From FactCheck.org:
No ‘Wet Start’
A special note is in order here. We have seen some baseless claims that McCain was somehow responsible for the Forrestal disaster. One incorrect but widely quoted theory has him triggering the Zuni missile with the exhaust of his own plane by “wet-starting” – deliberately dumping fuel into the afterburner before starting in order to shoot a large flame from the tail of the aircraft. This is a preposterous notion. For one thing, A-4 jets flew at subsonic speeds and were not equipped with afterburners. According to the Military Analysis Network site maintained by the Federation of American Scientists, the A-4 was powered by a “Single, Pratt & Whitney, J-52-P-408A non-afterburning, turbojet engine.” The manufacturer’s description of the aircraft also describes the powerplant as “One 11,187-pound-thrust P&W J52-P408 engine,” with no mention of an afterburner.
And while pilots tell us that a “wet start” is possible even without an afterburner, the theory fails for another reason. The tail of McCain’s plane was pointed over the side of the carrier and away from other planes at the time, and the F4 Phantom fighter that fired the missile was facing McCain’s plane from the opposite side of the deck, as shown in Caiella’s diagram, in other diagrams, and in Navy film of the fire.

con’t:
This bogus theory appears to have gotten its start from a report by New York Times reporter R. W. Apple. Jr, who reported on July 31, 1967 – two days after the fire – that the Forrestal’s captain, John K. Beling, believed an “extreme wet start” had created “a thick tongue of flame” that set off the Zuni. Beling did not identify McCain’s plane as the source, however, and said only that the aircraft was “parked near the carrier’s island,” which would have put it far forward and on the opposite side of the flight deck from where McCain’s plane was getting ready to launch. Not usually noted by the conspiracy theorists is that Capt. Beling “repeatedly said that he had been unable fully to sort out the conflicting reports” that circulated on the 5,000-man vessel in the hours after the fire, according to Apple, who also called the wet-start theory “tentative.” In any case, Beling’s early theory was soon dismissed by Navy investigators, who found that the Zuni had been touched off by a stray electrical charge, not by a jet exhaust. Author Freeman summarizes the findings succinctly in in “Sailors to the End:”
Freeman, 2002 (p. 250): The investigation revealed that the rocket (fired) because a freak surge of electricity jumped through the plane’s system at the moment the pilot switched from the outside electrical generator to the plane’s internal power system.
Freeman has posted an item on his own Web site flatly stating that McCain was in no way responsible for the accident. “McCain was never suspected of causing the fire because investigators determined immediately that the rocket misfired from the other side of the flight deck,” writes Freeman.
Caiella agrees. He told us: “There is no possible way John McCain could have caused the fire on board the Forrestal. … McCain’s only connection with the investigation was as a witness, in both a written deposition shortly after the fire and later in sworn testimony to the board…

Add to this the fact that, while McCain’s father may indeed have been serving as CINCNAVFOREUR, he would have little to do any investigation of the Forrestal, which was under operational control of PACFLT at the time of the incident.
Like Jon, I’m no fan of McCain’s politics, and his behavior towards the President since the election has been reprehensible . . . but I think it’s important to set the record straight, and leave the smearing and rumormongering for Fox and hate radio . . .

Kataphractos, thanks for talking about the Real John McCain. There are two versions of the Forrester incident: the official and the witness’s version. Witnesses say McCain killed all those people and was airlifed off the ship immediately and assigned to another one. The official version doesn’t mention McCain at all with regards to the fire on the flight deck.
Also the official version of his being a war hero does not mention that he was shot down over Viet Nam because he disobeyed orders. Standing orders were that you start evasive tactics when the alarm in your plane goes off, warning of approaching missiles. McCain ignored the warning and was struck by the missiles. So he is really no hero but rather, he’s a screw up.
Also missing from the the offical version is that McCain was a common drunk. He’d go over the fence (AWOL) and go drinking when he was at the Naval Academy. He didn’t worrry about being caught because his father the admiral would get him off.
His drinking didn’t slow down until he married the multi-millionaire heiriss.

McCain’s Plane Crashes
Posted on September 5, 2008 , Updated on October 12, 2008

Q: Did McCain crash five planes? Did he cause the 1967 Forrestal fire?
A: No. Chain e-mails and Internet postings that make that claim are mistaken. One crash was found to be his fault, but the Navy commended his piloting skills.
FULL QUESTION
Is the information below true? I have heard that McCain crashed five planes. In searching the web I found this information. It was located at [DELETED] Thank you for more information.
FULL ANSWER
Update, Oct. 12: We have further updated this article to include details from newly released Navy records of an investigation that found McCain’s first crash was due to pilot error, and not, as McCain has stated, an engine failure. The L.A. Times story also pinpointed the dates of early incidents more closely, and we have rewritten and re-ordered some sections to reflect this new information.
Update, Sept 19: This item was originally posted Sept. 5, 2008. We have updated it to include additional details of the 1967 Forrestal disaster from official documents, which differ from McCain’s own, widely accepted recollection. We have also included McCain’s admission of “daredevil clowning” in an accident that did not result in loss of his plane.
We have had numerous questions about this widely circulated claim. Some say McCain “lost” five planes, others that he “crashed” five planes. All offer this alleged “fact” as evidence that he was a bad pilot. All are incorrect.
McCain did lose two Navy aircraft while piloting them. One crash was found to be be McCain’s fault, the other due to an engine failure of undetermined cause.. A third was destroyed on the deck of the carrier USS Forrestal when a missile fired accidentally from another plane hit either the plane next to McCain’s or, less likely, his own aircraft, triggering a disastrous fire that killed 134…

I am whomperjawed at this revelation. I cannot believe that in all these years NONE of this ever came out before. I’ve seen cover up and deflections, but this is beyond astonishing.
Suddenly his years in Hanoi Hilton look less important than this fact that he was irresponsible, killed so many people AND got off through Daddy’s influence. This puts him in the same camp as Pat Robertson and George W Bush who used their fathers’ power to get off heavy duty AND to deflect criticism about it.
Wow. Just freaking wow. Thank you Kataphractos for this information.

Although I have no love for John McCain, I feel the truth must still be told. John McCain was in a Navy A-4 fitted with a Pratt and Whitney J-52-P-408-A non afterburning turbojet engine which flew at subsonic speeds. Although it is claimed that a wet-start may still be done in a non afterburner equipped jet, the plane in question had it’s tail pointed out off of the deck and towards the ocean. This would not have caused the accident described, as the flame, if there had been one, would have shot out away from danger.

Those of us FROM Chicago know that by the time that whippersnapper Obama showed up, the good old days were pretty much over for the Machine -no more “good graft” (they borrowed that from Plunkett and his defense of Tammany Hall), no more undue influence to keep Jews and Blacks out of office, no more guaranteed results at the polls since ‘voting the graveyard’ does not work in an electronic world.
Sigh. The loss of tradition is a sad thing…
So Mr. O arrives and gets to STAY as squeaky clean as he arrived. Now pretty much everybody is. Even Richard Daley did not play his Daddy’s games. So Mr. O gets elected to the US Senate, now is President – and he STILL works honorably and gets things done. All of us know his Illinois rep, his Senate rep, and now his actions as president – he does not HAVE to be corrupt. He has history on his side.
As for other kinds of envy – I’m female so it’s not a game I play, but I certainly have seen the ‘mine is bigger than yours’ going on, it’s everywhere, but that is the white man’s problem. If that’s what’s behind Mitch and John and Eric and whoever’s problem with Obama – see a shrink, will you? Stop inflicting your psychoses on us?
I have NO doubt that racism is underpinning MOST of what is happening in the GOP virulence. Get over it folks. Obama IS better than you. Sorry! But remember your origins. Remember that Lincoln had Frederick Douglass to the White House – and they actually became friends. Lincoln was a racist – how could he NOT have been – but got beyond a lot of it. We have all faith in you, GOP – you, too can stop being a dipshit and learn to be an American.

This is the sort of thing one cannot fact check since it involves potentially a cover up of long standing.
Note the SAME sort of issue with Pat Robertson who sailed to Tokyo with his Korea-bound crewmembers in the 1950s. His father was a Senator, and during shore leave, Pat called Daddy and got removed from the ship and thus from service in Korea. He stood on the dock laughing and waving at his former shipmates as they headed to Korea – and he to a cushy, safe position.
When he ran for president in 1988, one of his former shipmates, former GOP Congressman Pete McCloskey, publicly charged him with using influence to get out of service. Until that moment – and Pat’s defamation of character lawsuit against McClosky- NO one knew this. It was untraceable, unverifiable. When McCloskey showed up in court with FIFTEEN others prepared to testify to Robertson’s perfidy, so Robertson dropped the suit saying he was ‘too busy’ to pursue it and that he had ‘won’ – even though the judge threw OUT the suit with prejudice.
So we cannot know one way or the other on this right now. Fact checking in the negative under these circumstances may simply mean it was well hidden and no one squealed. Or it may mean it’s a lie. We don’t know.

I sure hope you are correct. I am so sick of dealing with the Benghazi-gaters. There were timelines posted by CNN, ABC, CIA but they continue with the speculation & fabrication fed to them by Fox Entertainment Bubbleknewsnot. They all believe that Obama & Hillary sat in the situation room watching it all by drone feed, eating popcorn & saying “let them die”. FUX planted a false narrative invoking the Bin Laden situation room, the Vince Foster murder by Clintons claim, & mixed it up with rabid hatred for the President. There was no investigation by FUX. They immediately discredited the “Innocence of Muslims” video (notice the Foxbots all used the exact same verbiage about it) which actually caused much of the outrage & still does as we have Arab TV in our household & they are still angry over it. I also hold that there is something suspicious about the timing of the film, the donors of the film (from Israel), the riots that night at multiple embassies, the whole confusion of it that I believe was meant as a foil to an operation that was way too sophisticated to have been done by a rag tag group of terrorists. I’ll bet if the GOP really got to the bottom of the investigation, they’d be looking at themselves & some of their foreign friends.

for mccains record, i have viewed 16 sites and all say the same thing, some interviewed servicemen on board and on deck to witness the event, some witnesses were also pilots who understand the mechanics and implications, what i did not find was a video of this occurrence in 1967. the many reports and interviews trumps an unseen video.
benghazi- the calls for help- NPR radio had an extensive reports several days ago. 1st attack reported excited utterances, background noise, communication shut off. attempts to contact Ambassador unsuccessful. observation drone was sent. unsure if drone made it embassy before 2nd attack. at this point the CIA is responding and returning fire to superior forces. they requested back up forces. the military responded by sending special force units from europe and US.
the drone is redirected to 2nd location. CIA now also under fire and communicates urgency/dissatisfaction with help. drone arrives- the view explained as looking through a drinking straw at a grainy B/W TV screen records – several forces of well armed units directing fire on a building in a populated neighborhood. some groups appeared in video unarmed yet appear to be yelling protesting event. i believe now to be civilians protesting attacks where they live. but see how those protests might be mistaken for something else. the CIA force was not seen on video.
it was determined that an armed drone was unacceptable as innocents might be killed, the location missles sent to would be incorrect as enemy forces move to superior positions before missles arrive and friendlies enter kill zone.
whatever it is sure the analysts were unsure, or misread or called for other analysts to opinionate.
tragic that the response forces were not in time.
important to note, the additional security requested was for tripoli and not benghazi, so those forces could not have helped even if were in place

After posting my opinion concerning McCain’s military records and his recent behavior with opposing politicians, I was called to task and provided with video that has claims in opposition to yours and what I used.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=c... while I can little sense of this old tape, there appears to be eyewitness accounts and so I am here for my own personal satisfaction to my curiosity. Is there any way you can provide verification of veracity to the report you provide @ rockcreekfreepress.tumblr...
can you provide me with some validation? While you do this, I am attempting to get same from the above, because while I see stories and claims, alt names are used as well as conflicting descriptions or explainations. Thank you, dbh

here you go david bell, on the USS forrestal in 1967 it is accepted -No. Another aircraft to thr rear dropped an armed rocket that went forward and struck the plane that McCain was in.
however,[laughing out loud] in my searches i have discovered a multitude of aircraft/pilot incidents that surround McCain and his piloting ability. he really was a hotdog-maverick? my personal conclusion is that there must have been a real shortage of navy pilots or else he was highly connected…OOHH! he was.and there was.
AND he is still not off the hook for his childish antics

Just like the left to rip into John McCain. Obama wouldn’t have lasted in a prison in N. Vietnam. Nor would he have fought, except for the other side. Its just like the leftees to try to tear down a smear someone. Obama wouldn’t even get hired by most of the top businesses in the country. He has never done anything to defend this country or hold a real job.

“Just like the left to rip into John McCain.”
Just like a rightwingnut to regurgitate tired talking points . . .
“Obama wouldn’t have lasted in a prison in N. Vietnam. Nor would he have fought, except for the other side.”
That’s the first correct thing you’ve said.
Obama wouldn’t have fought in Vietnam — BECAUSE HE WAS TWELVE YEARS OLD WHEN THE US LEFT VIETNAM IN 1973.
“Obama wouldn’t even get hired by most of the top businesses in the country. He has never done anything to defend this country or hold a real job.”
The “Obama has never held a real job” meme is just like the birth certificate: remains popular with the wingnuts, no matter how many times it gets debunked.
PolitiFact has a list of the President’s employment history (www.politifact.com/truth-...) ending with this statement:
There you have it. By our count, Obama earned paychecks from 11 for-profit businesses, compared to just six nonprofit or government employers. We understand the point that the most well-known part of Obama’s work history is in positions outside the private sector, but Scarborough was absolute in his declaration. “Not one check,” from a for-profit enterprise, he said. We like Joe. He’s hosted segments on PolitiFact. But this claim is False.
As for “not defending the country” — heard from Osama bin Laden lately?

I firmly believe that Senator McCain’s already corrosive bitterness at losing the presidential election has been doubled by Willard Romney’s loss this year in the presidential election. I also believe that he despises President Obama from the bottom of his heart and can’t reconcile himself to the reality that President Obama is a much better man than either of them. For these reasons, he jumped on an opportunity to embarrass the president as well as Ambassador Rice. All he managed to do was to make himself look like an even bigger jackass than he already was. He did this both by missing the meeting that would have provided information he claimed to want and by having his “conspiracy” theme exposed to be fraudulent. His conduct in this makes me doubly glad he’ll never be our president.
