Republicans are Blaming George Clooney for Mitt Romney’s Defeat
By: Hrafnkell HaraldssonNov. 10th, 2012more from Hrafnkell Haraldsson
So the Republicans have been shocked into disbelief if not into silence by President Obama’s re-election. Impossible as it was for them to believe a black man could inhabit the White House as anything other than a butler or gardener, they are having even more problem understanding how he could have been re-elected. They had managed to convince themselves that it was all a terrible mistake that would be righted when 2012 came along.
Of course, it had not been a mistake. Obama carried women by a wide margin. In some areas he lagged behind his 2012 accomplishments: Jewish support fell from 78 percent in 2008 to 69 percent in 2012; support of the “nones” – religiously unaffiliated voters – fell from 75% in 2008 to 70% in 2012. But when you consider that the only demographic Romney had – white Evangelicals – account for only one-quarter of the electorate and one-quarter of these voters do not feel abortion should always be illegal…Well, you see where the problems lie.
As Rachel Maddow, Jon Stewart, and others have quipped, do the math.
But conservatives do not want to do the math. They look for the most bizarre explanations they can find to rationalize their collective delusion. So we find Tim Wildmon, the president of the American Family Association (AFA) – Bryan Fischer’s boss – and his research director, Ed Vitagliano, getting together with Joseph Farah of World Net Daily to talk about the impossible and their inability to comprehend our shared reality.
Fortunately, they didn’t do it in secret and Right Wing Watch was there to listen and to share.
As I said, unable to comprehend basic math, the conservatives have come up with all sorts of theories, including what was, up until now, their deepest thought yet: because people want stuff and Obama will give them stuff. Karl Rove even insisted Obama had suppressed the vote! How? By saying bad things about Mitt Romney.
Yes, the Republican Party is the Party of choice for rapists but it is also the party of those with the collective wisdom, knowledge, and emotional development of a third grader.
And as if to prove that assessment, Wildmon, Vitagliano, and Farah, dove even deeper into the human psyche than Karl Rove and all those others since Election Day. This trio of braniacs has concluded that Obama was re-elected not because of any allure of “stuff,” but because we are as shallow as they themselves. They think we voted for Obama because George Clooney did.
Here is the logic as expressed by Vitagliano: “I love George Clooney, George Clooney loves President Obama, therefore I love President Obama.’”
Joseph Farah, whose World Net Daily is a celebration shallow thought (and the dollar sign), said that Hollywood is “bombarding” Americans with “unconstitutional” and “ungodly” ideas (I dunno, even Hollywood can’t come up with the bizarro story lines WND does on a daily basis). Farah complained that law schools don’t teach the Constitution anymore, by which, presumably, he means the Bible.
On the other hand, I haven’t seen a Republican lately who would know the Constitution if it fell on him.
Do these three men have a solution? Of course not. Rethinking their position is not a possibility because like every religious fanatic since Moses, they think they’re doing God’s will. They can’t possibly be wrong. They can’t have lost beause their platform sucked. So instead of an intelligent discussion, we get this lurid example of verbal masturbation:
Farah: When you look at that election map and you see the big swaths of red and the little pockets of blue and the little pockets of blue are dictating to the big swaths of red. This isn’t new, this isn’t just in 2012, this has been the case for many, many years, every election in my lifetime has been like this but it’s getting worse. So what’s the answer? I think there’s only a couple of things we can do, we’ve talked about them before together, I think it is very important that Christians get down on their knees and tremble before God for what has happened to this country, what we’re going to be experiencing for the foreseeable future here and really take a good look at 2 Chronicles 7:14. That is not talking about the whole country coming to repentance, it’s talking about the people who are ‘called by my name,’ it’s us, it’s the believers, if we do this, God will answer. I really believe that, I think we have got to embrace that view very strongly in the days ahead. I do believe America is facing judgment and I think we’re in the midst of it and I think it’s going to get worse.
…
Wildmon: This was history made Tuesday night in this respect: a fellow won re-election for president who was by all measurements a failure, an utter and complete failure.
Farah: It’s so unbelievable, unthinkable, inconceivable, by what standard of measurement do the American people use to evaluate this guy? I mean if he was running against just some guy you picked out of the phone book you would have thought they would’ve rejected Obama because he is a complete and total failure.
See, we’re right back at “unbelievable,” “unthinkable,” and “inconceivable.” It is my guess that it will be a good long while before the Republican Party is able to move beyond this stage. You remember when Obama won in 2008 how they acted as though they had won the election. They did that again in 2012, telling Obama, now that he had won, they would follow Romney’s economic plan.
There is a massive disconnect taking place in conservative minds. Because they should rightfully be in control of the United States government, because that is how God wants it, they are unable to function in any meaningful way as human beings. Really, they all ought to be in an asylum until we can bring them back to earth, if that is even possible.
Meanwhile, stay tuned, folks, to an interesting next four years, as the conservative spin machine conjures up a new reality having nothing to do with anything you or I will ever experience.
Don’t worry: you won’t be alone. We here at PoliticusUSA will be here with you every step of the way.

These people can’t admit it but OBAMA RAN A BETTER CAMPAIGN. Romney was all over the place. One day he is “Managerial Mitt”, the next day “Wishy-washy Willard.” Had he ran as an Eisenhower Republican he would have beaten Obama. But his problem was he had to pacify a reactionary base that was to the right of Taft or Goldwater. A base that wanted to destroy the 20th century gains and actions that made this a fair, just ,and equitable society. When you see Tea Party radicals attacking the right to vote in the 21st century, you get very concerned.

President Obama won because he the best man for the job. And the majority of the voters realized this.

President Obama accomplished a lot, IN SPITE OF the Repubs obstructing him, and trying to make him fail.
He was just the better candidate, so why can’t people admit that.

Just when I think the GOP can’t get any dumber, they manage to outdo themselves. They simply cannot accept the fact that their ideology stinks to high heaven, or that changing the messenger does nothing to alter that fact. For years, they have been operating on the idea that Americans are stupid, and there are some who really are. It’s scary to see folks who are so divorced from reality that they were actually “shellshocked” at what now is shown as an inevitable defeat. But as they typically do, they double down on exactly what causes problems for them. Apparently, they have difficulty accepting the fact that not only are demographics changing, but also the reality that after more than 30 years of the same, more and more people are on to them. On top of all this is their disdain for minorities in general and the president in particular. They simply cannot reconcile themselves to the fact that America voted for the candidate who is superior by far, both in intelligence and empathy for all of us. They are still in denial about their flawed ideology.

Exactly. The Repubs policies are not for the 99%. They are for the 1%. And smart people are not fooled by the GOP.

Where President Obama has irremediably “failed” in their eyes, is that he failed to be white.

As one of those who should be getting down on my knees and repenting for how I voted…I did talk to God before I voted absentee and since then. He had no problems with the way I voted or that I believe Jesus didn’t stutter when he said to do whatever you can to help others. When he starts telling me the Bible is a lie…especially the part about the rich and what they are like…then I will look for another belief system. My guess…2000 years has been long enough to show that the BOP/fundamentalists are on the wrong end of the argument.

There has to a profound change in the minds and hearts of Republicans to make their party relevant in the twenty-first century. And they simply do not have a clue although there are thousands of them (clues that is) out there, especially in the aftermath of last Tuesday’s election.
Next time around, it will not be enough to co-opt an issue or pretend to like African-Americans, or gay people, or Hispanics. They have to become accepting of differences and appreciative of the fact that all Americans have the same rights, the same hopes and dreams as the mythical whoever it is that the Republicans appeal to. In other words, they have to believe in what President Obama believes in – a country of the people, by the people and for the people, all of them.
There are members of my husband’s family who still think that slavery was a good idea and that your wealth is a clear indication of your moral worth. They are entrenched in the eighteenth century. The United States of America has moved on and, unless the Republican Party is willing to join the rest of us, they will continue to raise the same racist, misogynist, and bigoted arguments again and again.
Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan were, in many ways, perfect representatives of the Republican Party of this century. Not terribly bright, certainly not creative thinkers, not compassionate people. The rest of us simply care more about the country than they did. And we showed it on Tuesday night. The GOP did not think that we cared; they certainly don’t.

Maybe they are just worshipping the wrong god.
My God protected this country from being raped by the wealthy both enviromentally and fiscally.
My God is looking out for the the sick and the downtrodden regardless of race because he created us all. Msybe they need a new God.

Interesting that Obama campaigned with media stars that appealed to women, young voters, etc. Romney chose Clint Eastwood and Meatloaf, has beens who mosly appeal to old white men. Way to expand the base, Mitt!
And these guys do not seem to understand the difference between land mass and population. It’s not the amount of sagebrush in a state that determines its political importance, it’s the size of the ppulation. That big swath of red states are mostly empty, didn’t you notice?

Re the last comment about the little pockets of blue dictating to the big swaths of red — most of those red states have lower — much lower — populations.
Elections are by the people and for the people, and despite the massive attempt at ruthless voter suppression, the Prez won both the popular vote and the electoral college by impressive margins.
If the GOP officials in SO MANY states hadn’t made such a ferocious attack on the public RIGHT TO VOTE I think we’d be calling this election a “landslide victory for the President.”
But thank the gods/goddesses of elections, as our President can fulfill his goals. I find it amazing that despite the racially motivated, Bible thumping hard-core attempts by the GOP — we actually won this most amusing and nail-biting election in my longish life.
I think this one will be a life-saver for animal species, global warming, poverty, racial relationships, education, repairing our tattered reputation– so many things we need to handle around the globe.
I’m not exactly sure where the logic is in the former remark, so if I’m missing something, let me know.

Bible thumpers like those guys… are no different from the religious officials in the 17th century who violently suppress the progress of science. Those use the name of God (whoever they prefer) to justify their acts of ignorance and cruelty, are one of the most despicable kinds of human being.

Literally… These so-called experts just don’t get it. The United States of America has spoken. These New Old South racist bible thumping voices and their gerry mandered pockets of red are not the majority anymore. The reality is that those that don’t follow the elephant (GOP) to water and drink their snake oil that they call water they must be not only be ungodly but under some kind of spell from hollywood. For a long time these types thought that they can put anything up for a candidate and we would blindly vote for them. Never realizing that the day would come that these “snake oil fakes” would be rejected. The day has come and is here to stay. Instead of facing the fact, they are looking for excuses. Never looking inward at their fake “As” and smell the stink of their bias mindset. Hope come 2016 they are acting the same way…..

The party of “personal responsibility” is at it again – coming up with excuses.
I voted for Pres. Obama because he is the best man for the job. Romney would have been a disaster for this country. It had nothing to do with a hurricane, or with George Clooney (I’m not even a fan of his to be honest), or with anyone other than Pres. Obama himself. I’m not looking for “free stuff” nor is anyone I know looking for that (even those that are receiving assistance because of job loss or because they don’t earn a living wage).
The GOP needs to stop spending so much time thinking up excuses and start looking from within to see why they lost.

When I think of “Republican” I immediately think “arrogant, smug, extremist, dishonest and hateful.” And apparently the majority of Americans agree that modern Republicanism just stinks.
By the time the GOP nominated Romney folks had more than their fill of all the vile racist hatred directed at our president by the GOP and its base. It also didnt help matters that their golden boy not only woefully lacked character but also was incapable of offering intelligible solutions or presenting rational suggestions on how to move America forward. Instead of offering a viable option to Obama, the GOP pumped infinite amounts of cash into a hopeless cause, allowing Willard to rely on his magic undies and a dumbed down population to propel him to victory. Really, how could they NOT lose?
It is no surprise that the Republicans now handle their recent loss so poorly, so absurdly, blaming everyone and everything else for what they caused themselves. Its their way, but not the American way. I think the GOP has finally outlived its usefulness. Time to disband and start over.
