The Republican Petraeus Obsession is All About Impeaching Obama
By: Jason EasleyNov. 13th, 2012more from Jason Easley
Republicans have quickly shifted from licking their election defeat wounds to trying to tie the David Petraeus’ affair to Benghazi in order to impeach President Obama.
The conspiracy theories surrounding the Petraeus resignation are running wild on the right. A FoxNews.com story is typical of the right’s obsession with the time of the CIA director’s resignation, “Washington is still reeling from the resignation of General David Petraeus as head of the CIA just days before he was supposed to testify on Capitol Hill about what the CIA knew about the deaths of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans in Benghazi on September 11, and when it knew it. The many questions surrounding that scandal-including why the FBI was reading the CIA director’s emails and Petraeus’s mistress’s bizarre claims about a secret prison in the Benghazi CIA annex — just add to the picture of an Obama administration out of control on national security—and the conclusion that someone knowingly put an American ambassador at risk to his life; left him there to die; and then lied about it afterwards.”
On the television side Fox News contributor John Bolton claimed that Eric Holder knew about the affair months ago, and took the conspiracy to the next level by asking, “Did the attorney general sit on this information for two months?”
Fox News contributor Dana Perino sat down with Fox and Friends and floated the conspiracy that Obama forced Petraeus because he was about to testify on Benghazi, “I don’t think anybody throws away their 37-year marriage on national television to cover up for a White House on an issue like Benghazi. That doesn’t make sense to me. However, is it plausible that they said, ‘do this or we will expose you’? And he said, ‘I’ll expose myself.”
It is obvious where they are going with this.
The Petraeus resignation is part of an Obama cover up that if exposed will bring down his presidency.
Having learned nothing from when they tried to do this to Bill Clinton during his second term, Republicans are actively looking for a way to impeach President Obama.
You’ll notice that two of the three people quoted above served in the Bush administration. (WMD and Valarie Plame, anyone?) The other thing that each of these conspiracies have in common is that they are being floated by Fox News. After Romney’s crushing defeat last week, Fox News is standing by on the ready with exactly what their audience needs. An insane conspiracy that will allow them to retreat back into their bubble and ignore reality. Just like in 2008 when Glenn Beck and his political alternate universe rose to fame after Obama won, Petraeus and Benghazi are 2012′s right wing retreat from reality.
After losing elections, paranoid conspiracy theories are Republican comfort food used to soothe the fractured psyche of those who got a taste of what ‘Real America’ actually thinks of them.
If anyone thought the GOP rank and file would learn any lessons from their latest defeat, think again.
The GOP rank and file fueled by their media and with several radical House Republicans at the ready are set to launch another jihad against reality.
How are Republicans responding to Obama winning reelection?

The only trouble is, they will eventually call Obama before Congress like they did Clinton and tie up his time that he needs to devote to solving problems. Just like they did with Clinton! The only way to solve this is to take away Fox’s broadcasting license. There are grounds to do so since Rupert Murdoch has been labeled a man of low character. Barring that, I would like to see the requirement that the so-called news in the U.S. be factual, fair and balanced and not just a motto that looks good to the minions.

Donna the way to have stopped this, would have been the arrest and prosecution of Bush/Chaney.

The arrest and prosecution of Bush/Cheney would have set a precedent for American presidents and vice presidents to be arrested and prosecuted after they leave office. It doesn’t mean that they would be convicted, but it would be a bad precedent nonetheless.

A lot of people seem to get mixed up on this, but Fox News isn’t a broadcast network. It’s a cable channel and isn’t regulated by the FCC and has no broadcast license to revoke.
I think you’re confusing it with Fox Networks and its many local affiliates. They are though, both subsidiaries of Murdoch owned News Corp.

This impeachment stunt will only further anger the electorate who are by majority tired of the political games and ready for a track forward and some leadership. Their accusations will not stick and if they think that impeachment is easy, they should remember Valerie Plame and the bogus WMD’s that were never found. This will only make most Americans more angry at the juvenile and purely partisan antics played daily by much of the GOP. With Fox news and other right wing liars making money for spreading their lunatic ideas accross a gullible and hungry for blood group of devestated losers this will only further hinder any meaningful work done by Congress. Soon enough we will see the GOP downgraded to a minority party will little to no power and media outlets like Fox, and Druge will continue their decent to tabloid status.

So far the information makes clear ONE public official knew about this months ago – Eric Cantor. How does HE get a pass on what the FBI has said about him while it’s pretty clear no one in the Administration knew until election day?
None of this would stop Petraeus from testifying. So that theory holds NO water.
What’s covered up? Petraeus’ reputation maybe – but now he and Allen and the two women all of whom seem to be Rove’s friends are caught in a huge mess.
This is the most bizarre story, but everyone IN it including Cantor is GOP. If HE knew and did nothing about telling King and Feinstein, then are there not consequences to him? Wow.

So they want to waste another gazillion dollars of taxpayer money on another witch hunt. The GOP is just amazing. You lost, you idiots. Grow up. The four-year temper tantrum led by Mitch McConnell and John Boehner will persist, I guess. When will these idiots realize that the American people expect adult behavior by our elected representatives?
Trying to connect President Obama to the General Petraeus mess is absolutely only Fox-worthy absurd. Hopefully the majority of Americans who support President Obama will not let this happen.

During the campaign, and seeing how the Republicans had zero policy other than blasting Obama I suggested in blogging that A)Tune to any news source. B) If it is talking about Benghasiit is a Rupublican news source. If it is talking about anything else it may actually be a non-Republican source or just having a weak moment in this atrocity of a one note campaign. Of course, I remember well the Clinton impeachment story, and sure this is more of the same nonsense they trump up to further their one cause: Keep the taxes on the very rich the same or lower. Oh, claim it is the deficit (they created) they worry about. They did not worry about the deficit when they borrowed the money to pay off their Corporate backers and pay for absolutely nothing in the Bush years. Two wars and no taxes on their clients? Added it to national debt and ran on the idea it was Obama “tax and spend” same-oh same-oh.

I’ll bet $20.00 OR a pint of blood payable to the American Red Cross on your “betrayal” hypothesis, K. The Iraq war debt has come due, and it is long past time for the Cayman Island account holders to pony up their fair share (Apparently they’re not willing to self-import. I know! I agree with all the comments posted. We progressives/independents are fully aware of this being another Republican ploy because they will never admit to defeat and need “something” to do while they lick their wounds. It’s not in their DNA. WE must stay informed about this situation and write letters, make phone calls etc. to prevent this from becoming a total nightmare. We must stand behind the President and speak loudly and often.

The GOP has proven amply that they have not reconciled themselves to the president’s re-election. They have been grasping for all kinds of straws in order to discredit him, and this is just their latest attempt. I hate the fact that they have to be in office for at least 4 years before they can be voted out. There should be some way to hold them accountable the very moment that they engage in their partisan stupidity, because they waste too much time, energy, and taxpayers’ money going on their wild goose chases.

The House is up for reelection in two years. The Dems CAN take the majority in 2014, but it will take a lot of work. Turnout in the midterms is usually not that great, and that favors the Repubs.

but I read that the GOPers want to (possibly) initiate impeachment proceedings. Wd nt that possibly put a damper on Pres Obama’a performance/productivity?
Don’t the republicans know of something called the ‘loyal opposition’? They obviously did not really think that the Benghazi affair was THAT important since they did not even bring it up on the third presidential debate, you know, the one on FOREIGN POLICY! So now Obama’s action on it is an impeachable offense?
They continue to obfuscate and impede the orderly prosecution of our gov’t and therefore, are impeding the will of the people.

The truth is, FOX and the wanna-be journalists there, will say ANYTHING, and create conspiracy theories about everything to try and get rid of the President. So glad we have Obama for 4 more years. It’s sad that so many Americans are resorting to tactics like this. With recent petitions to secede, apparently people don’t realize that treasonous actions like that is the exact definition of unamerican, as well as the many requests to impeach Obama, America is looking like a laughingstock to the rest of the world. Instead of fighting each other, our government and citizens need to be united in our differences. Embrace the fact that this is a country of different people, with different views and beliefs. That’s what our founding fathers wanted, and what this past election showed.

After Berlusconi lost the election in 2006, his media empire started trumpeting up imagined voting frauds. Without ever producing evidence worth considering, the old irate satrap pretended votes recounting and special laws.
The analogy is striking. Dear American friends, don’t let these people close to power ever again or they will destroy both your democracy and your economy. My 2 cents from overseas.

growing up a white male in the South, I heard white racist assholes say with great frequency, “If you ain’t better than a n____r, who are ya better than?”
aside from the hilariously low self esteem that this statement implies, (why do they have to be “better” than someone? why not just live your f-ing life?) I’m confident that these cretinous thugs are screaming this to themselves right about now, as they plan another attempt at de-legitimizing Obama.
This sentiment is THE driving force behind their antics, make no mistake: according to the GOP, “If ya ain’t better than a n____r, who are ya better than?”

How close to the election did this whole Benghazi scandal occur? I am just guessing, and I am by no means a political scholar, but it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure this one out! I do not think this administration wanted to fool with all of this so close to the election, so these folks died without any action taken at all to help them and that does not look very good for the administration? So hence the cover up? Just guessing here? Perhaps the administration knew about this “affair” for quite a while, a person would hope so considering his designation as Director of the CIA….and waited to use the “affair” against him when it suited him. I do agree, although sadly, it is a waste of time to pursue this cover up or any truth concerning the 4 americans kiled, because nothing will happen anyway to anyone in this administration as the senate will not take action against anyone. Just like with the border patrolman killed in fast and Furious, we will never know the answers, and neither will these families. ):
