Sharp Tongued Candy Crowley Won’t Be Bullied on Romney Fact Check
By: Adalia WoodburyOct. 17th, 2012more from Adalia Woodbury
One thing Republicans hate more than facts is those pesky little fact checkers, especially if they are one of those sharp-tongued women Willard runs away from. Last night, Romney may have wished he could have traded debate moderator Candy Crowley for Elizabeth Hasselbeck.
In the name of salvaging what remains of the Romney/Ryan ticket after a disastrous performance in last night’s debate, Republican surrogates made the rounds whining about Candy Crowley’s fact checking.
“it wasn’t necessarily your place to try to be fact checker right there. I happen to think that your assessment of that was wrong. … It’s not the role of the moderator to say, ‘Mr. President, you’re right.’”
Americans for Limited Government
“If CNN wants to maintain any shred of credibility as a ‘news’ organization, they should fire Crowley immediately for her gross violation of whatever remains of journalistic standards.”
“There goes Candy holding Romney’s feet to the fire while, letting Obama unchain his muse.”
And then there’s Rush Limbaugh:
“She committed an act of journalistic terror or malpractice last night. If there were any journalist standards, what she did last night would have been the equivalent of blowing up her career like a suicide bomber. But there aren’t any journalist standards anymore. And she’s going to be praised and celebrated, probably even get a raise, give her another half hour on that show she hosts.”
Ah yes, moderators must “know their place” in Romney world.
Facts must also know their place as conveyed by Neil Newhouse back in August : “We’re not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers,”
In a Republican world, women should also know their place. As we learned from other Republican candidates, women are supposed to be lady like during political debates. Whether the woman is a candidate or a moderator, she must know her place as the demure helpless female with no brain to check.
We saw it in Romney’s decision to cancel his appearance on “The View” because of those sharp tongued women, well except for Elisabeth Hasselbeck. She knows her place so very well.
The notion of fact checking is obviously problematic enough for the Romney campaign, but when a sharp tongued woman focuses on checking facts instead of dinner or the laundry then has the audacity to “correct” the man; she’s asking for blow back. Let’s face it, there is more to this story than the whine about Candy Crowley. Romney made both a factual and tactical error in his effort to distort the President’s comments on Benghazi.
Just so that we’re clear, here is a partial transcript, courtesy of Politico of the exchange involving Romney, the President and Crowley:
CROWLEY: Because we’re — we’re closing in, I want to still get a lot of people in. I want to ask you something, Mr. President, and then have the governor just quickly.
Your secretary of state, as I’m sure you know, has said that she takes full responsibility for the attack on the diplomatic mission in Benghazi. Does the buck stop with your secretary of state as far as what went on here?
OBAMA: Secretary Clinton has done an extraordinary job. But she works for me. I’m the president and I’m always responsible, and that’s why nobody’s more interested in finding out exactly what happened than I do.
The day after the attack, governor, I stood in the Rose Garden and I told the American people in the world that we are going to find out exactly what happened. That this was an act of terror and I also said that we’re going to hunt down those who committed this crime.
And then a few days later, I was there greeting the caskets coming into Andrews Air Force Base and grieving with the families.
And the suggestion that anybody in my team, whether the Secretary of State, our U.N. Ambassador, anybody on my team would play politics or mislead when we’ve lost four of our own, governor, is offensive. That’s not what we do. That’s not what I do as president, that’s not what I do as Commander in Chief.
CROWLEY: Governor, if you want to…
ROMNEY: Yes, I — I…
CROWLEY: … quickly to this please.
ROMNEY: I — I think interesting the president just said something which — which is that on the day after the attack he went into the Rose Garden and said that this was an act of terror.
OBAMA: That’s what I said.
ROMNEY: You said in the Rose Garden the day after the attack, it was an act of terror.
It was not a spontaneous demonstration, is that what you’re saying?
OBAMA: Please proceed governor.
ROMNEY: I want to make sure we get that for the record because it took the president 14 days before he called the attack in Benghazi an act of terror.
OBAMA: Get the transcript.
CROWLEY: It — it — it — he did in fact, sir. So let me — let me call it an act of terror…
OBAMA: Can you say that a little louder, Candy?
CROWLEY: He — he did call it an act of terror. It did as well take — it did as well take two weeks or so for the whole idea there being a riot out there about this tape to come out. You are correct about that.
ROMNEY: This — the administration — the administration indicated this was a reaction to a video and was a spontaneous reaction.
CROWLEY: It did.
ROMNEY: It took them a long time to say this was a terrorist act by a terrorist group. And to suggest — am I incorrect in that regard, on Sunday, the — your secretary —
Regardless of Romney’s issues with sharp tongued women, and anyone who challenges his created facts; by virtue of saying I want to make sure we get that for the record, he opened the door for Candy Crowley to get all fact checky and sharp tongued.
Moreover, Romney made a fatal error if one of his objectives was to gain support from women during that binders full of women moment.
Aside from the lies about these binders Romney reminded us that his views on women are, to be charitable, archaic.
When someone sees a woman as “the” person who does the cooking, the laundry and checking the homework, they probably consider themselves as open minded when they are receptive to flexibility in hours.
“I recognized that if you’re going to have women in the workforce that sometimes you need to be more flexible. My chief of staff, for instance, had two kids that were still in school.
She said, I can’t be here until 7 or 8 o’clock at night. I need to be able to get home at 5 o’clock so I can be there for making dinner for my kids and being with them when they get home from school. So we said fine. Let’s have a flexible schedule so you can have hours that work for you. …What we can do to help young women and women of all ages is to have a strong economy, so strong that employers that are looking to find good employees and bringing them into their workforce and adapting to a flexible work schedule that gives women opportunities that they would otherwise not be able to afford.”
In short, Romney’s inferred argument is that women are paid less, but it comes out equal because they are granted flexibility in hours to go home and cook dinner.
It also reminds us that Romney’s idea of a woman’s “place” remains in the home, fluffing and folding, while occasionally checking on the roast in the oven. If she wants a real challenge, she can try out a new recipe. Work is something we do for fun; when we need to get out of the house or get some extra money to buy that new dress.
With that mindset, it’s little wonder that Republicans are so critical of a women who dares to fact check their Willard, let alone calling him out on his ….. distortion of the facts.
As noted by CBS, “let’s attack the moderator” is the parlor game of choice this election season
“The attacks on Crowley are different than the criticism of moderator Jim Lehrer after the first presidential debate. Lehrer was deemed too deferential, while Crowley is being criticized for inserting herself into the conversation with questionable facts. But the overarching dynamic is the same:In this polarized political age, a debate moderator has little chance to escape a harsh critique. Even Martha Raddatz, who kept tight control on last week’s vice presidential debate and challenged both candidates, was deemed by conservatives to have sided with Joe Biden.”
The Republican reaction to Candy Crowley was a combination of damage control, an aversion to facts and the reality that Candy was one of those sharped tongue women with a brain who Willard is scared of.

Even if I had not watched the debate last night and seen it for myself, I would have known Pres. Obama won the debate based just on the Fright Wing’s reaction today.

Does this country have a surplus of straight jackets? I ask because when the President is re-elected, that’s when the REAL crazy is going to start. This is just the pre-game show.

Paws-You said, “They are CERTIFIABLE. “
I don’t how if you were being sarcastic or stating facts but you are 100% correct.
I know it can sound unreasonable AND politically incorrect to characterize a whole group of people in such a stereotypical and negative way BUT—–
When we remember that the GOP has been taken over, and is no longer composed of reasonable, good people who happen to have a different opinion of how things should be handled, it is not wrong to group so many individuals together.
The extreme right wing, the fundamentalist (here mostly Christian, in other countries mostly Muslim) are NOT ruled by common sense, nor logic, nor fairness. They ARE RULED by emotion and those emotions consist of insecurity, anxiety, feelings of low self-worth, and outright fear.
FEAR so intense, and perhaps helped along by low information, low IQ, and low sophistication, that they CANNOT THINK STRAIGHT, THEY CAN ONLY FIGHT BACK at what they feel (not think, FEEL) is frightening them.
The GOP has long promised–for a very long time—that they would bring back religion (to government despite separation of church and state), support the feeling that abortion is murder (thus imposing their religious views over all other religious views) — deny science now that quantum physics TO THEM seems to threaten their idea of God i.e. cosmology too (what if we find LIFE ON OTHER PLANTS, WHERE IS GOD THEN?)All RELIGIOUS views that comfort the fear of those with tremendous anxiety about life.
I doubt the GOP seriously thought of following through on these promises, BUT WHEN A BLACK MAN ENTERED THE WHITE HOUSE THE GOP HAD TO FOLLOW THROUGH OR LOSE THE SUPPORT OF THE FEARFUL.
The one thing fearful, ignorant, low self-esteem people could always count on was that at least –in their own eyes anyway– white and therefore superior to anyone of color.
The election Obama destroyed that last safe haven for our lowest common denominator and now they are fighting to…

Let me finish and clarify:
The last resort for our “lowest common demoninator” among us what that at least they were white and thus superior in their own eyes to anyone of any color.
Obama’s election took away that last safe haven and thus they are fighting for white they feel is the destruction of the last thing they can cling to to have ANY faith in themselves.
People who are ruled by their ignorance and fears DO have a way out but it is too difficult for most.
Overcoming ignorance is done fairly easily by education, even if only self education, picking up books and reading them.
Education can and will dispel fear and ignorance.
So far not so hard.
The hard part is being able to confront the self humilation of knowing you have been wrong, knowing that you have hurt others, knowing that you have failed in being a good person, knowing that you were ignorant.
I have the greatest respect in the world for anyone who confronts themselves in a deep and meaningful way and makes sincere efforts to “do what is right” by themselves and thereby others.
“To thine own self be true and then you can be false to no other man.” (Sorry forget author’s name. I remember seeing this on first day of class of my third grade at Bruce School in Memphis, Tennessee.

I’m glad Candy called out Mit Romney when he was considerably wrong.
I understand that as a “moderator”…she is not allowed to take sides.
Truth is, Mit opened a can of worms for himself…by asking that “I want to make sure we get that, for the record.”
Mit asked, and Candy responded.
Sometimes, I wish the world wasn’t so politically correct.
If I would’ve been Candy..I would’ve been a bit more cruel to Mit, by saying…
“You stupid jackass, read the transcript for yourself.”
If Obama took the same ill informed approach as Mit…I’d expect Candy to call Obama a jackass, too.”

I do not think it is “taking sides” when an out and out lie is told.
I do think it is the moderator’s lie to call out a lie when it is spoken during the debate.
Mitt is called the “etch a sketch”, the “flip flopper” because he constantly lies, usually by contradicting himself, whether it is months later, or weeks later, or in some cases HOURS OR MINUTES LATER WHEN ONE OF HIS STAFF COME ON, AFTER MITT IS OFF STAGE AND STATE THAT MITT’S REAL POLICY IS EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT HE JUST SAID !
( Mitt uses a Palin strategy–tell people what they want to hear—act like people should believe you “yesterday when you said one thing” and also believe you “today when you say the opposite” with the hope that some people will not have heard both statements and that at least some from each “side” will hear only the “side” meant for them and vote for you. Mitt knows that the one who wins is ONLY the one with the most votes and if he can get more votes he wins. To hell with honesty, consistency etc. )
When one of the debators is so widely known to lie, it becomes a duty, an obligation of the moderator to call out that lie.
Otherwise the entire reason for having the debate–ANY DEBATE—is lost.
I am pretty sure that in most debating rules, you are not allowed to lie as a “stragegy” and the moderator IS SUPPOSED TO CALL OUT THE CHEATER ! !
I also think you automatically lose a debate when you out lie, whether knowingly or even if just by incompetent research.
WHEN YOU ARE APPLY FOR THE JOB OF SERVING THE UNITED STATES AS PRESIDENT I THINK THE RULES OF COLLEGE DEBATES SHOULD BE HONORED.
THIS PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE, IS OF SUCH IMPORTANCE AND RESPONSIBILITY THAT BOTH PARTIES SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE AND SHOULD BE ABOVE REPROACH.
This ain’t high school people !
Romney disrespectd, condescended to, and embarassed a republican FEMALE moderator, someone on his “side” of the fence. Think how he will treat the 47% that he considers…

To clarify what the President said back in September:
The facts: On September 12, the day after the attack that killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, Obama said in comments in the Rose Garden that he had learned about the attack on the consulate the night before.
“Our country is only as strong as the character of our people and the service of those both civilian and military who represent us around the globe,” he said. “No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done.”
www.whitehouse.gov/the-pr...
On September 13, at a campaign event in Las Vegas, Obama vowed to bring the killers to justice. He then added, “No act of terror will dim the light of the values that we proudly shine on the rest of the world, and no act of violence will shake the resolve of the United States of America.” www.whitehouse.gov/the-pr...

It’s a prime example of why Romney should have NO access to the White House, let alone even a visitors pass. While I have not been in favor of some of President Obama’s decisions, I feel Romney has been bought and paid for and is not fit to run this country. I feel that he has a horrible, unorganized campaign staff and his mental capacity should be examined by a professional doctor. Having been personally involved with 2 election campaigns I tend to look at politics a little different due to the fact that my husband is a 2nd term local politician. Even at a small town mayoral campaign I am shocked at what Romney has gotten away with and I applaud Crowley for having the balls to call him on one of hundreds of lies he continues to spew. And, don’t get me started on his running mate.

Candy Crawley did last night what so many others have been too spineless to do. She had the temerity to correct Willard at a moment when he just KNEW he was going to nail the president. He is a chronic liar who won’t stop even when his lies are disproven. It was priceless to see how deflated he was when she corrected him on the president’s reaction to the Libya killings. Of course, he didn’t want to concede and he didn’t have the decency to even apologize or admit when he found he was wrong. Ms. Crawley did nothing to apologize for, and the obese toad AKA Rush Limbaugh is grasping at straws, just like the rest of his fellow lunatics on the far right.

Bill Press was on fire about the media this morning. The Right yesterday began pushing the meme that the President wasn’t talking about the attack in Libya where he referenced “an act of terror” in his Rose Garden speech. What had Press enraged was that both CBS and NBC have begun parsing the speech, saying that perhaps the right has a point, maybe the President was talking about the OTHER 9/11.
No wonder half the country is delusional – there is absolutely nowhere for the casual news consumer to get unvarnished, unspun truth.

I think that’s their new meme. John Sunuhnu? was on Soledad O’Brien’s show and was claiming that that speech was referring to the Arab Spring or something to that effect? He refused to acknowledge it as based on the event in Benghazi, they will twist, distort themselves into pretzels for the sake of lying. Thank God there are intelligent people out there who know bs when they see, smell and hear it.
