No Response: Rick Perry’s Football Stadium Godfest Has Only 8,000 RSVPs
more from Hrafnkell Haraldsson
We have been following the progress of Rick Perry’s prayer orgy in Houston on August 6, and as we last reported, even though a court dismissed the case against Perry’s attendance, only 6-8,000 had RSVPd to attend (the 8,000 figure appears more accurate), along with only one governor, Sam Brownback of Kansas. Now it appears even Brownback is hedging his bets, says Kansas’s Lawrence Journal-World (and Perry is talking as though he may only be an usher, rather than the featured speaker).
After first accepting the invitation to attend in June and at his own expense, Brownback’s office hasn’t had much to say about The Response. Right now they’re not confirming any plans the governor may have. Apparently, he’s planning on being on vacation during that time period.
If Brownback doesn’t show, the closest Perry is going to get to a visit by another governor is a video message from Florida’s governor, Rick Scott (R).
One of Brownback’s problems is his relationship with extreme right hate groups, especially his old buddy and former roommate, Lou Engle, from the International House of Prayer (a group of false prophets) and co-founder of TheCall. Engle is infamous for his ties to the Uganda anti-homosexual legislation, which could lead to the death penalty for those in the Ugandan LGBT community.
Engle has tried to detach himself from that public relations fiasco by claiming he was misunderstood (aren’t they all?) but right now, Brownback’s close relationship with Engle is not helping him. This is the US governor who has spoken at rallies with Engle, the guy who wants to kill gays and lesbians. It was such an issue in 2010 that State Sen. Tom Holland (D) demanded Brownback denounce Engle. We all remember when Barack Obama was supposed to denounce a black minister for not liking white folks, but here is a guy who wants gay and lesbian folks dead.
Brownback, like Engle, like Perry, like the AFA that is hosting the event, is a hater, a hypocritical, Bible-thumping Old Testament-style hater. It remains to be seen how many of these haters can survive the 2012 culling, when Americans get to go to the polls again to rectify the errors of 2010. Pulling back from Perry and the others may not be enough to help the Kansas governor, despite his attempts to distance himself from ground zero.
Conservatives are swimming against the tide. Americans increasingly want equal rights for the LGBT community, including marriage equality, and Republicans (and the Tea Party) seem to think the best response is to ramp up the hate and continue to press the obviously dishonest meme that the American people are behind them. The trouble is, the American people can read. Poll after poll reveals the lie that is conservative politics in this country.
How many Republicans are going to want to step up on that podium with Rick Perry and proclaim their association with what is essentially a bunch of lemmings heading for the cliff? It’s a big decision to make; by going, a Republican governor is supporting and quite publicly not only the extreme conservative agenda but Rick Perry himself.
Nobody but nobody is fooled by the Perry/AFA rhetoric surrounding the event, that it is “apolitical.” And if it’s “nondenominational” as claimed, that’s true only to the extent that those attending will be fundamentalists of all denominations. Talking about “religious diversity” as an email sent out this week does is hypocrisy of the highest order. This is not an event for religious moderates, let alone non-Christians, who have been identified as idolaters who worship “false gods.”
Here we have a football stadium-based rally hosted by an extreme right-wing hate group (the AFA) and a state governor who will likely soon be running for president. You do the math.
Don’t believe Perry’s “This isn’t about me” routine. It’s all about this grandstanding grifter and you can bet your last “God hates fags” t-shirt that Brownback knows this as well as anyone. At lot is riding on this, for Perry in particular, but also for any public figure who dares attend. If you were Brownback, would you want your political future riding on another man’s roll of the dice, especially when the truth is that man is a rank opportunist who’s previous actions show his lukewarm religious beliefs and his backers are a nationally recognized hate group just as opportunistically joining their star to the only man desperate enough to give them a public stage?

All right, its time to invite the damm muslims and Buddhists. Lets get it over with.
Hraf, you have the touch for a post. :)
However we must not be complacent. In watching the wannabe conservatives on the net they seem to think there is a huge groundswell of conservatism happening. Keep your eyes on the target and vote god out of office

Thanks, Shiva. I agree: no complacency. Let’s enjoy their failure should they be 60,000 or so short of a full house, but let’s keep busy pushing liberty and equality.

Although, like any other idiotic bagger rally, this will be portrayed in the “main-stream media” as a rousing success, with footage from an NFL game substituted for the twenty Hoverounds that pass as attendants.

If Jesus can feed the masses with one loaf and a couple of fish, perhaps Ricky Perry can fill a football stadium with only 8000 people. Hallelujah, another miracle! Perhaps’ he can bring the grifter from the north and her throng of hundreds.

Anyone stupid enough,or crazy enough,to throw in with Rick Perry, will hopefully get what they deserve! And,believe me,eventhough Texas wants rid of him,and top Repubs know he is”about an inch thick”,as one put it-the Repubs and Tea party(which Good ole Rick Perry is right in with those folks),they will support him for President if they think he can beet Obama! Never mind that if Perry were to become President(shudder)-the Repubs/teapubs,will have their”yes man” to FINISH OFF THE U.S.A. AND MIDDLE CLASS WITH!! I love Pres,Obama,But He and all DEMS BEST GET WITH IT,IF THEY WANT TO SAVE THIS COUNTRY FROM COMPLETE AND FINAL DISASTER!! THAT,FOLKS IS THE FACT,OF WHAT WILL HAPPEN,IF WE GET A REPUB PRES.NOW! Can the American voters BE THAT STUPID? i wonder at this point!

For people crying out for equality there is sure a lot of hate on here, you have the right to not believe in God we chose to believe, you have the right to not attend we chose to, you have the right not to pray we chose to. My belief that Jesus Christ is the savior of the world, the only hope for our world have nothing to do with my political affiliation as well the Governor has a right to practice his beliefs how he wishes to. Always amazes me that those who cry for equal rights etc… are only referring to rights for themselves and what they believe. You have the right to live how you wish and I fought for that right in the Marines as well I fought for my right to believe in Jesus Christ, I am very sorry that your view of Christians is one of intolerant hateful people, please forgive us. We are flawed just as you are, but we serve a God who is perfect a God who is merciful and mighty who loves with an everlasting love and whose mercies are new every day.

Shiva you are wrong your repeating what you have been told, I personally know many of the people involved. We would all do good to stop listening to the talking heads in the news on both sides of the aisle. We are like a bunch of dumb parrots repeating what we have been told and never thinking for ourselves, if you were ever to meet many of those attending and involved which as I said I know most of them very well you would be pleasantly suprised at what great loving people they are.

Exactly what is their agenda Shiva? According to the event website the agenda is to seek God through prayer and fasting asking Him to bless our country and our governmental leaders, to give them the wisdom to lead our country theresponseusa.com/why-th... so exactly what about that is political or intolerant??? My guess is you seek any and every oppurtunity you can to slander those whose views differ from yours, so what makes you different from those who spread a message of hate?

Obviously you do not follow Brian Fischer. I suggest you familiarize yourself with him and come back. The Southern Poverty Law center considers them a hate group

“According to the event website the agenda is…..”
I can create a website that puts forth my agenda as the elimination of all red haired children under the age of eleven, and having the AMC Gremlin named the most beautiful car ever built.
However, anyone who looks into my past or has a shred of objectivity will see that neither are true.

Shiva I figured your argument revolved around the issue of homosexuality and I was not going to address it until you brought it up. Now that you have let me say that anyone has the right to be gay, but you don’t have the right to make me agree that it is ok or to teach my children that it’s ok. My right as an American is to disagree with you and to stand up for what I consider to be morally right, and those are your rights as well. There is a right way and a wrong way to handle differences. Obviously we learned nothing from Dr. King, as for my guesses they have proven themselves out, now haven’t they?
Shiva (Moderator)
Aug. 6th, 2011 at 1:09 am
My arguement has nothing to do with homosexuality. Straighten up. the AFA is backing the Perry prayer group, they are known as a hate group. Why they are a hate group is meaningless to me. The fact is these people are not christians like you think of christians
You figured my argument was centered around homosexuality? Thats hilarious. It was never even mentioned
Now you can admit you are part of, feel connected to or sympathize with a hate group and get it over with

Really it didn’t maybe you should go back to your SPLC website and read the opening line of their take on AFA, it says ANTI GAY. So you tell me why you cited them as a hate group??? Why they are a hate group is meaningless?? I would think that would mean everything after all if they are a hate group there must be a reason why, right? Now I can admit I am part of it? Now the attacks right?? Come now I have not attacked you I have simply stated reason and fact, you have regurgitated what you have been told. Oh and I am not attending I live in WA, but I do plan to pray and connected yes I have many great friends who have helped to organize the event and are attending. One I suggest you research is Doug Stringer a wonderful man whose compassion and love for people has brought hope and help to literally thousands. Shiva let me be clear that I never wanted to offend you but rather point out the hypocrisy exhibited by slandering those whom disagree with you just because they disagree. SEMPER FI

And you can investigate the word Dominionism
You havent offended me, I am sorry you do not approve of a website that even the government quotes. Yes Bush too. The AFA are not christians like you think of christians.
The AFA is a hate group, you need to read up on Brian Fisher and the things he has said about Indians, gays and people who are not like him. They are in the SPLC hate group list
But do read up on Dominionism, they claim to be christians, yet you are not a christian to them.
Have a good night

was at Reliant yesterday and experience a gathering of Believers that had one agenda…praying for God’s mercy on this country…confessing our sins of sexual immorality, murdering innocent children in the womb, pushing our Creator and Sustainer away from our lives, and other sins.
AFA is an organization that like myself, hates the sin, not the sinner. Once you understand that God’s grace and salvation is given and not earned, your spirit will be free and your eyes opened!!! God Bless this country and our troops!!!

Just went to SPLC website and I have to say I am not surprised they are a political activist group who when anyone disagrees with them they slander and revile them. The funniest headline “Jihad against Islam” LOL, HA! Come now really?? as a US Marine that’s appalling. We have done more to bring freedom to the Islamic world than they themselves have done, we have spent billions on stopping the genocide of their own people.
Shiva (Moderator)
Aug. 6th, 2011 at 1:19 am
Yeah we had to kill more of them than they did just to bring what passes for freedom. People are still dying there.
Sorry. Dont buy it. The SPLC is a highly accredited organization and its information is used by many people.
Now, do you support, belong to or sympathize with a hate group or are you finished?
Texas_Marine
Aug. 6th, 2011 at 1:31 am
Wow so I guess you were there? In Iraq I mean or maybe Afghanistan? No? well again you say what you have been told, yes people died and I wish that had not been the case. But many have been set free from slaughter from a man who killed his own people in cruel manners. Belong to a hate group no, a Christian yes. The funny thing here is you have resorted to name calling but can’t see past your own self righteousness in that you practice the very things your against.

I live in Lawrence, Kansas, a speck of blue inside a dot of blue (Douglas county) inside a sea of red, the state where Brownback and Kris Kobach (worse than Brownback) rule.
The freedom that the tea party craves exists here–freedom to have public education cut to the bone, to have social services eliminated, freedom to raise a child while child poverty rates soar, etc. In other words, SOS. Please don’t forget that not all Kansans voted for SB. Life is tough here. It’s no exaggeration to say that teaparty ideology is the political center. Reactionary repubs, again, many far worse than brownback, dominate the legislature and every state office.
8000 people attending this rally is sickening. I would be disgusted if only 8 people showed.
I don’t pray, but if I did, I’d pray that Sam would stay in TX and never come back here.

Not unable, just different. Things aren’t so formal here.
Prayer doesn’t work that way. We don’t just pray for what we would like and God says yes and grants it. He isn’t a Leprechaun. He is a Father. Just like any parent; he says yes when he knows it is what is right for us, he says no when it wrong for us, and he says wait when he knows we are not ready.
