Romney Claims He Never Paid Less than 13% but Won’t Release his Tax Returns
Mitt Romney delivered another trust me moment in South Carolina today by claiming that he has not paid less than 13% in taxes in the last 10 years, but still refused to release his tax returns.
Here is the video from The Washington Post:
Romney said, “I just have to say. Given the challenges that America faces — 23 million people out of work, Iran about to become nuclear, one out of six Americans in poverty, the fascination with the taxes I paid I find to be very small-minded compared to the broad issues we face, but I did go back and look at my taxes, and, over the past 10 years, I never paid less than 13 percent. I think the most recent year is 13.6%, or something like that. so I pay taxes every year. Harry Reid’s charge is totally false. I’m sure waiting for Harry to put up who it was who told him what he says they told him. I don’t believe him for a minute by the way, but every year, I paid at least 13 percent, and if you add in, in addition, the amount that goes to charity, the number gets well above 20 percent.”
The fact is that even if Mitt Romney paid 13%, he is still paying less than the middle class. According to the Tax Policy Center people in the middle twenty percent of taxpayers pay an effective tax rate of 15.5%. This means that even if Mitt Romney’s claims are true, he is still not paying as much as someone in the middle class.
Mitt Romney doesn’t seem to understand that his answers aren’t making this better. In fact every time he talks about his tax returns, it raises the questions in voters’ minds of why he won’t release his tax returns. What could be in those returns that he is so desperate for us not to see? If Romney had nothing to hide, then he would have nothing to fear by releasing the returns.
All Mitt Romney managed to accomplish today was to breathe new life into Harry Reid’s questions about his tax returns. The trust me, but I am not going to show you, is not going to get Romney elected president. Each time that Romney tries to tell people that there is nothing in his tax returns without releasing them, he reinforces doubts about his honesty.
This story is not going away, and voters aren’t being fooled by Romney’s attempts to put the burden of proof on Harry Reid. Sixty three percent of Americans want Mitt Romney to release his tax returns. They don’t want to hear Romney tell them what is in the returns. They want to see them. The Romneys have gotten angry with America and decided that their tax dodging is none of our business. If they maintain this attitude, don’t be surprised if voters decide that they don’t want snake oil salesman Romney living in their White House.

Watching Romney try to weasel his way out of this makes me think of the entitled people on court shows that claim “No, I didn’t pay them back, but they harassed me by demanding their money so I don’t feel I owe them!”

Once again, he does not say “I paid 13% in INCOME taxes.”
Yes, maybe he paid in property taxes, etc 13%. Possibly. But then, with him claiming his Utah home as the primary residence by accident, it’s tough to know if he’s paid the proper amount of property tax as well.
And what is this adding of his church payments? He says, “If you add in what I paid to charity, the number is well over 20%” Since when do we all get to do that? We DEDUCT our charitable giving from what is owed; it doesn’t go toward taxes paid. It reduces the total tax liability. What is he going on about?
His church is not the government. So I’m thinking that it doesn’t count as taxes paid to the government to fund our commonwealth.

I’m still waiting for the first 2 years he claims he will release. He hasn’t even released 1 full years worth yet. What an empty suit.

Besides, I don’t generally hear Obama asking for the tax returns. I hear other politicians – Republican as well as Demoratic – and actual, voting citizens asking to see them. It’s ridiculous that he’s so determined to go against precedent on this. And this lack of personal transparency is just another layer to his incredible campaign of obfuscation: I have plans to reform welfare and medicare and social security and to balance the budget and get rid of the national debt. I’m not gonna tell you anything about any of those plans right now. Just trust me. Vote for me and THEN I’ll tell you how I do all of this while simultaneously lowering taxes for everyone and how to $h!t rose petals, like me!

I could not care LESS what he claims. Fact is, if he knows he NEVER plans to release them, he can tell us anything he wants, knowing we will never get the chance to prove him a liar. He has done zero to engender any trust, he doesn’t deserve our trust, and I absolutely don’t trust one grunt out of his lying mouth.
Nuff said.

We already know for a fact that Romney is a confirmed, proven and demonstrable liar.
And we’re supposed to trust this guy just because he says so? Please.

Poor Mittens – he really has it tough.
I ran a quick check on my INCOME vs TAXES for 2011
Gross Income vs Federal 13.6%
Gross Income vs Fed, State, SS, MC = 23.5%
Deduct (non-taxable) retirement savings
and my percentages increase to 16.4% and 28.5%

All the media have to say about this is: “an innocent man doesn’t withhold the proof of his innocence”. When you apply this truism to the situation, YOU KNOW that the Rmoney’s know that there’s something in those returns that would kill Mittens’ chance at being President (pause for laughter), if not put Mittens in federal prison (nearly 150 federal felony counts of false reporting, which would result in a 70+ year federal prison sentence). “An innocent man doesn’t withhold the proof of his innocence….”

I’d rank this right up there with the lies high school boys tell high school girls: “No baby, I won’t…” or “Yes, I love you”

As I just tweeted re: the “13%”:
Damned math! Ex: $1k in taxes pd = $7700 taxable basis. But @mittromney’s yrly income is more like $15 mil. Effect rate: .00008%. (twitter.com/WarpdElfAtYrS...)
So, Romney may be deceptively “truthful” at the 13%, but it is only 13% of taxable income. Remember – he had losses galore due to economy crashing.

“Romney claims he never paid less than 13% in taxes.”
Even supposing that this is something we could verify as true, this is something to brag about?
Hey! Willard! I’ve never paid less than 25% in taxes. That’s what I want to SEE from you and all your friends!

Well, I just looked at my tax returns for the last two years, and on an income of about $30,000, my tax rates were 19% and 17%. Gee, Mitt, wanna help me out here?
