Romney pledges to kill the Only Network (PBS) Airing His Wife’s Convention Speech
Ironies abound as the only network that will be carrying Ann Romney’s convention speech is that the same broadcast network that her husband has promised to kill (PBS).
The New York Times reported that the Romney campaign is angry with the television networks for deciding not to air Ann Romney’s convention speech. Ironically, there is one network that will air his wife’s speech live.
According to TVNewser, “PBS-which has the benefit of being a not-for-profit TV network-will offer substantially more primetime coverage than any other broadcaster, with coverage running each night of the conventions from8-11PM. During the coverage there will be a number of segments featuring analysis, commentary and interviews, including contributors David Brooks and Mark Shields, analysis from “NewsHour” political editor Christina Bellantoni, and reports from the convention floors.”
This would be the same PBS that Mitt Romney wants to eliminate government funding for. It is a week to the day since Romney promised that if he is elected, he will cut all federal funding for PBS, “There are three major areas I have focused on for reduction in spending. These are in many cases reductions which become larger and larger over time. So first there are programs I would eliminate. Obamacare being one of them but also various subsidy programs — the Amtrak subsidy, the PBS subsidy, the subsidy for the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities. Some of these things, like those endowment efforts and PBS I very much appreciate and like what they do in many cases, but I just think they have to strand (sic) on their own rather than receiving money borrowed from other countries, as our government does on their behalf.”
Romney wants to eliminate public funding for PBS despite the fact that public funding is the reason why public television will be the only broadcast network to televise Ann Romney’s convention speech. Because PBS doesn’t rely on advertiser dollars, they can afford to put news and quality programming first.
A privatized PBS would have made the same decision that the other networks made. Broadcast networks make a ton of money off of summer reruns. There are no production costs associated with repeat episodes, so the ad revenue generated is straight profit. The networks would be taking a financial loss on that hour if they showed Ann Romney’s convention speech.
For a businessman, Mitt Romney doesn’t understand much about business. PBS is a public service. They aren’t bound by the private sector profit motive, which is exactly what allows them to provide three times more coverage of the political conventions than the other broadcast networks.
PBS and Ann Romney’s speech is the perfect example of why government can’t be run like a business. A business doesn’t serve the public interest in the way that government can.
Don’t expect Mitt Romney to grasp this concept anytime soon, but feel free to enjoy the delicious irony that the only broadcast network willing to air his wife’s convention speech is the one that he has pledged to destroy.

I think we can safely recap here and say if the 1% doesn’t use or abuse it, its gone.
Who runs the trains in NYC and up and down the east coast? Amtrack is a heavily used rail system. PBS wipes Fox News out for listeners
Has Fox Been promised sole ownership of the airwaves under Romney / Rabbit ears?

The question you should be asking yourself, is why the mainstream media is not broadcasting her speech. Michele , goes on vacation, and shakes her booty, and and it is thoroughly covered. A potential first Lady is introduced to the US and no coverage. Whether you agree with her husbands politics or not. Seems that left leaning journalists (it hard to use that word for them) , are a very intolerant bunch, although professing the opposite. With regard to your complaints of government funding of PBS, 2 issues come to mind. PBS has consistently proven their bias in editorial coverages and can blame themselves for loss of government funding, second point is i would love to poll those who complain of its loss of government funding to determine how many have donated to PBS? You see, left/liberal leaning individuals love to be generous with government or other peoples money or efforts, rather than their own. Republicans on average donate more money, while democrats actually have a higher average income. So , the correct reaction would be to reach out to your fellow liberals, democrats, anarchists, occupiers, and all other 98% ers and step up donations. you would probably have a better result of actual dollars to support.

The issue is that the networks give even coverage to both campaigns. Do you have a reason why the Romney campaign should get more air time than the Dems, because that’s what this is all about.

Clarity, the networks told the RNC well in advance what nights they will be airing programming. The RNC then had a choice to make as to who they wanted on the air on those three nights. You’re griping to the wrong folks. This was the RNC’s choice. Deal with it.

Sarah, its not about equal time, Ann Romney will be speaking at the GOP convention which is scheduled a week before the Democratic convention. The following week there will be plenty of coverage of that convention.

Mitt Romney amazes me each and every day with how cruel, hateful and out of touch he really is, you could not have picked a more despised man, perhaps Donald Trump, other than that, what were the republicans thinking, they hate him because he has switched sides on every major issue that matters. Democrats hate him because he lies constantly and stands for nothing. Independants dislike him because they don’t know what he plans on representing, should he get elected. Nobody likes him, yet there he is everyday lying about the President in every way possible. They way he has treated the American people during this campaign, should bar him from becoming the President. He has out and out lied daily, about everything. Has called people who would like to see his taxes, small-minded. He has already been caught lying on his taxes before and had to amend them to be legal.

Clarity: Just a few questions: What source provided you the data that Democrats make more money than Republicans? What part of this article led you to believe this was a coverage issue, and …cough, not a money issue, like networks making mire money on reruns? Do you just make this stuff up as you go? And you further accuse luberals of being very generous with government money other rhan their own. Do you fail to see the irony in your comment? Romney is using PBS, government fynded, rather than his own money (which one can argue he has untold wealth) when he has promised to cut PBS funding once he becomes President. Do you not see the ignorance in your bias against liberals, how your accusation does not aaply to liberals, but, instead exposes Romney as the one with his hand out, even though he could afford to finance the broadcast himself?

Clarity: And concerning your remarks about First Lady Michelle Obama, she is the First Lady (not potential FL) and thereby, like her husband, generates public interest on not only a national, but international level, also. Furthermore, both generate such a warmth and compassion; whereas Mr. and Mrs. Romney seem entitled and indignant against requests to prove their good citizenship by showing their taxes, calling those who ask “small-minded” and alienating those who might potentially vote for them. I hope these points provide some “clarity” for you.

Mitt Romney could have learned a lot from Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. He needs to know that Main Street and Sesame Street have a lot in common.
