Romney Rigs His Own ‘Relief Rally’ by Buying $5,000 Worth of Supplies
Want a photo-op with Mitt Romney just after Sandy made landfall in New Jersey? Just grab a pre-purchased jar of WalMart peanut butter and hand it to him at his “Victory Rally” “Relief Rally”. Heck, “Just grab something.” It’s not as if it matters what it is, because this is all just a Big Show.
Today we discover that those supplies at the Romney “Relief Rally” were not all random donations but rather buttressed with $5,000 worth of goods purchased by a desperate campaign as props. The campaign planned to photo op Romney accepting food from supporters and loading a truck with food after the event, but what if no food showed up? Buzzfeed is reporting:
But the last-minute nature of the call for donations left some in the campaign concerned that they would end up with an empty truck. So the night before the event, campaign aides went to a local Wal-Mart and spent $5,000 on granola bars, canned food, and diapers to put on display while they waited for donations to come in, according to one staffer. (The campaign confirmed that it “did donate supplies to the relief effort,” but would not specify how much it spent.)
What makes this so outrageous is that the Red Cross did not want the items the Romney campaign collected in the first place. The Red Cross would have been better served with a $5,000 cash donation from the campaign. But that wouldn’t have allowed Romney to pose with canned goods and water as the Caring But Refusing to Answer Questions Republican Who May or May Not Want to Privatize FEMA.
Mitt Romney’s “relief rally” yesterday rang more like a typical campaign rally, except for the oddly similar stacks of food and water he photo-oped himself loading into a truck after the event. It was odd to see, for example, what appeared to be multiple bags of uncooked rice going to people without power, but whatever, right? No one ever claimed Romney or his followers were practical sorts.
The press was not impressed with Romney’s transparent attempts to keep campaigning through a disaster even before they knew it was staged with props, and they called him out on his “Victory Rally” (as their press passes read) repeatedly:
Lots of Qs in the press corps today on how Romney’s OH “storm relief event” is diff from a “campaign event.” Same venue, same celeb guests.
— Ari Shapiro (@Ari_Shapiro) October 30, 2012
Romney’s event it in Kettering Ohio:This photo says it all — “Obama: You’re Fired an here’s some canned goods” twitter.com/jonkarl/statu…
— Jonathan Karl (@jonkarl) October 30, 2012
They also called him out on his failure to answer questions about his position on FEMA. The campaign explained that the Victory Rally badges were printed up the day before, but what kind of campaign doesn’t reprint them for the optics alone?
Given Romney’s stance that we should privatize FEMA and turn it over to the private sector, his own failure to do anything other than use the storm as a prop is not only indicative of his craven character, but also kills the entire premise of his privatization cries. Republicans like to tell us that the private sector will step up. Will they, then? Would you imagine that a multi-millionaire with money stashed all over the world might step up? Or do you think that multi-millionaire might only care about how he appeared to the Victims whose votes he needs?
This is what Romney meant when he said all campaign events would be canceled. Because, see, this wasn’t a campaign event per se. It was a photo op: Mitt Romney as Purchaser of Prop Canned Goods that the Red Cross Doesn’t Need.
Meanwhile, as Romney posed with canned goods pre-purchased by his campaign and pretended he wasn’t the desperate liar who was also smearing Chrysler and GM, Republican Governor Chris Christie was making the rounds on TV to discuss the serious damage done to his state by Sandy. Christie also made the point over and over again that President Obama had been “wonderful” and had cut through red tape to make things happen.
Republicans, never able to keep their pettiness to themselves even during national crises, took to the airwaves to express dismay that Obama had been too competent and too prepared. Bush’s former FEMA director during Katrina accused the President of addressing Sandy “too early”, as opposed to waiting say five days while Americans starved in pools of their own urine or drowned waiting for FEMA.
“Just grab something!” Anything. Anything at all will do. It’s not like real people need real food. It’s just a photo op with stage props.
This should surprise no one after Paul Ryan’s blatant abuse of a soup kitchen where he posed without permission from the folks in charge with dishes real Americans had already cleaned. Ironically, Ryan left the soup kitchen in worse shape, as people were outraged by the politicization and blamed the soup kitchen for Ryan’s abuse. Photo-oped compassion. What’s next? Will they start photo-shopping themselves at hurricane relief centers with their tidy, neatly pressed rolled up sleeves and wooden smiles?

Mitt Romney is a sociopath, and does not care about hurricane Sandy, the people who died, or anything other than himself. Mitt Romney is only doing this rally to further his own goals. If Mitt Romney actually cared he would donate massive amount of money from his offshore bank accounts that he doesn’t pay taxes on. TAKE AMERICA BACK VOTE DEMOCRAT! What the Republicans want is the complete destruction/subjugation of anyone who is not a RICH WHITE YOUNG STRAIGHT MAN. Unemployment will do nothing but increase wherever Republicans have power. I made a video about unemployment, and how we can fix it. It’s at my YouTube channel Zarrakan, and here’s the name:

Just when we think Mitt Romney can’t get any shallower, he up and drains a little more water out of the kiddie pool. What we knew about Romney, what the other Republican presidential candidates said about Romney during the primaries, and what desperate Republican ideologues know but refuse to acknowledge, has become all too clear to even the thickest voter.

This has to be the most dishonest politician I’ve ever seen. His whole campaign is a lie. I wonder how he keeps his lies straight in his personal life – because you know if he lies this easily in a campaign, he’s lying like the wind in his personal life, too.

There’s a special place in hell for people like this. It’s despicable and disgusting. He did the same thing after warmongering during the Libya attacks and was photographed walking away from the podium with his back turned to reporters, with a SMIRK on his face. Ugh.
That so many people are that uneducated to actually vote for this man and shoot themselves in the foot in the process, is a sad and disheartening state of affairs.

There is a special place in hell for someone who donates food and supplies to victims of a natural disaster. Good to know…

Wonton – I think you missed the reason behind that “hell” comment. He and his staff faked things just for a photo-op. In addition, he ignored the Red Cross who told him money donations only. Instead of just donating money to them, he tried to make it seem like he was doing something extra special. On TV he tried to wager $10,000 with another politician – how about giving that money to disaster relief?! This is a guy who is out for himself and actually, even though he’s now trying another flip-flop, is really anti-FEMA. Instead of applauding Obama for a quick response to disaster, he thinks the President acted too soon!

I believe History will show that Sandy will go down as being “The storm that turned America around”
Talk about taking lemons and making lemonade…
I’d like to offer my condolences to everyone that has suffered loses of loved ones and/or experienced physical injury.
Sandy is showing stark differences between President Obama and Romney. A situation like Sandy shows the world President Obama’s strong points. He is an expert at bringing the best people togeather to fix a problem like this.
The fact that New Jersey got hit so hard might be karma (if you don’t believe in coincidences), because now the world gets to see President Obama “acting like a grown up” (learn a lesson here ann romney)
President Obama working hand in hand with Governor Cristie could very well advance the United States right into a new era.
Just think about the possibilities of President Obama and Governor Christie working togeather to bring the Senate and the House togeather to do the right thing and pass a HUGE infrastructure bill to start rebuilding the United States.
And I mean HUGE, maybe even in the multiples of Trillions. Why not, we can borrow the money at or dam close to ZERO % interest.
Everybody knows that our water and sewage systems need to be rebuilt. Bridges, tunnels, Dam’s, roads and airports need a ton of money. Internet services need to be everywhere. We need wind power, including the grid to move it around. Solar energy needs a push, as well as electric vehicles. Let’s do something to make our nuclear plants safer.
There is no end to this stuff that needs to be done.
They keep talking bullshit about our children and childrens children inheriting a financial mess and I say “to hell with that” How about the future of our Planet Earth. If we focus on saving our planet, everyone will be better off.
Jobs will be plenty, Goverments will be flush with new tax revenues, earth might just maybe breath a sigh of relief, we can all come…

Only $5,000? This from the man who wanted to “bet” Rick Perry $10,000 in that primary debate? It may not be betting against America (that would be profiting from shopping US jobs off to China), but it is most definitely selling this country, and those Hurricane Sandy victims, short!

this is unbelievably pathetic. Just like Ryan and his washing dishes. The dishonesty is core deep. Neither one of these two has any morals whatsoever. And this is who people are voting for to be president of the most powerful country in the world

Just when I was giving him a half a point for the attempt top help and encouraging his followers to contribute, then out pops the REAL STORY. What is really sad is that the few-many people who actually brought goods to give to the Survivors of Sandy were also duped and made to look like idiots.
Still there are those who take offense to Romney’s being criticizer for trying to help and they are not going to take kindly to this revelation. It really is a terrible thing when HATRED takes over a person’s soul and they can no longer see the light, even when it shines right in their faces.
I really hope “Sandy” does WAKE PEOPLE UP and turn things around, unfortunately I am a realist and I just don’t see it happening. What I do see is some serious issues come election day and especially after the pools close and the count begins.

What really gets me is that Romney is all about jobs, jobs, jobs, small business, etc. etc. but yet his campaign did not purchase these relief items from a local Mom and Pop store. No, they had to purchase it from Walmart, the huge corporation.

First he took advantage of the victims of Benghazi terrorist attack, now he takes advantage of the Sanday hurricane victims. While the President looks all grim while trying to help in any way he can as part of his duty, Mitt keeps flashing that obnoxious grin of his to gain voters’ support. There’s nothing humanitarian about that rally. It reeks of opportunism. I guess in times of disaster, people shows their true face.

There’s nothing that this man does in the political arena that doesn’t reek of desperation and rank opportunism. It’s even more obvious, after learning of the $5,000 spent, that this was nothing more than a publicity stunt. Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath have brought the true characters of both President Obama and Willard Romney into sharp focus. One is in command and working well with a Republican governor of a stricken state who has often vocally derided him, while the other shamelessly spews lies that have been debunked and carries on a political event disguised as a charity event. If Willard’s behavior in Ohio hasn’t convinced certain voters that he’s bad news, nothing will.

If you want to pick on Mitt, is this really the best opportunity you can find? Organizing a relief rally, donating food and water? Of course he is going to take a photo op…Obama was doing the same thing. But let’s face it, no matter what he contributed, those opposed to him will always find fault. Wise up.

Just to add a point or two-the Red Cross told Romney they needed the money MORE than they needed the food supplies and water. What good does a bag of rice do to someone with no power? Is he there helping with the clean up effort? If he was, even I wouldn’t get upset if he took some pictures. Ryan at a food kitchen holding up CLEAN dishes, and totally disrupting the whole place with all his cameras. You notice while Romney was handing out his food and water he wasn’t offering any interviews to the media about how his presidency would help with disaster relief. Oh that’s right he thinks it immoral. So no you can’t compare reporters taking pictures of Obama obviously doing his job to Romney’s fake little handout that wasn’t even wanted. You can only get one picture when you donate a check.

Wait…you think that the money Rmoney spent was HIS? For doing what? Sending our American jobs overseas? Shutting down American companies? Overcharging for crap made in China that breaks as soon as you open the package? Hiding his money in tax shelters so he doesn’t have to pay his fair share? Aiding Chinese companies to take over American ones in hostile takeovers? Guess what…even those in the deepest desperation of their lives don’t want THAT kind of money. Oh, and here’s the citation for the Chinese story, straight from John McCain: www.scribd.com/doc/785827..., it’s about page 145. Enjoy.

Or are you new to the Myth Spin Machine? But he was far far away from where the storm was. He might get his hands dirty. He can certainly afford it, he made more than 15 million (TAXPAYER) dollars on the auto bailout he “opposed” and is now in tax/ethics trouble for hiding that money in his wife’s “blind” trust.. Dan, he didnt donate $5,000 to hurricane relief.
When he seen Obama was getting attention, he went out and bought $5000 worth of food at Walmart, then lined people up for a photo op as they walked by and handed him the food he bought. It was a fraud, like Ryan washing clean dishes.
He lied about the whole thing. BTW Dan, not much of that stuff went to the Hurricane releif
Love the cliche about bought with other peoples money. Speaking of which, have you seen the reports that Romney used his church to get out of paying any taxes for years? Everyone else had to make up for him,.
Try not to be so weak minded

Dan, sweetie, apparently you didn’t read the whole article. The Red Cross asked for monetary donations, not goods. You have the same syndrome as Mittens, you know, the one where you jump to conclusions and don’t read?
