Rush Limbaugh Attacks Police and Firefighters for Contributing Nothing to the Economy
On his radio show, Rush Limbaugh said that police and firefighters are nice to have, but they take away from private sector jobs and contribute nothing to the economy.
Here is the audio from Media Matters:
Transcript via Rush Limbaugh:
RUSH: You know, Axelrod was on CNN with Candy Crowley on the State of the Union show on Sunday. He said, "We need to accelerate job creation in the private sector." And then he added, "One of the ways we can do that is putting teachers and firefighters and police back to work. Because those are good, middle-class jobs." Do you realize…? Well, I'm alternately stunned and at the same time exhilarated by this, because of how explanatory this is.
All of the jobs that he listed are actually public sector jobs!
All the money for them comes right out of the private sector.
But now we know where Obama gets his economic advice from. Look, as nice as they are to have — teaching jobs, firemen, policemen — they are all paid for with money out of the private sector. They are paid for with tax revenue from citizens. They cut into the amount of money left for private sector. They don't grow the number of private sector jobs, they reduce them. Now, I've gotta very careful here. Because nobody's against teachers or firemen or cops. But those are public sector jobs.
Look at the way these people think.
They're combining two things here: A, the never-ending appeal to tax revenue for firemen, cops, and teachers. That is the education of your kids and the safety you and your house and your family. And they're trying to say that those jobs are being cut and now we're not safe and your kids aren't being educated. And that's because the private sector's been too selfish and too greedy and so forth. (pause) Look, folks, this is where I have to be very careful. Nobody's opposed to cops or firefighters or teachers.
But they aren't private sector jobs. They do not contribute to economic growth. Their purpose is otherwise. They have an entirely different purpose: Public safety, public education, this kind of thing. But there's no growth in the economy. If you add those jobs — and if there aren't other types of private sector jobs added while at the same time we're adding to the fire rolls and the cop rolls and teachers — we are reducing the size of the private sector. This is Marxism 101. It's also Ignorance and Sophistry 101.
Limbaugh tried to accuse Democrats of doing exactly what he did by mixing together private and public sector jobs. Republicans like Limbaugh don’t want to talk about their cuts to teachers, firefighters, and police departments across the country. They don’t want the American people to know that their beloved tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy come at a cost of fewer police, teachers, and firefighters in communities all across the country.
However, Rush’s biggest Econ 101 fail was the idea that police and firefighters don’t contribute to economic growth. Each public sector job adds value to the economy. Public sector employees take their paycheck and pay the mortgage/rent, buy food, and support their families. All of that money goes back into the economy. When a public sector employee orders a pizza or goes to the mall, or gets their car fixed at the garage, just like a private sector employee, they are adding to the economy.
Republicans like Limbaugh want to keep the two types of employment separate because they don’t want the American people to catch on to the amount of damage their war against the public sector has done to the economy. Without the public sector layoffs, the unemployment rate would be at least one point lower. The public sector layoffs have cost the private sector 500,000 jobs. Republicans at the state and federal levels have used public sector layoffs to minimize the economic recovery.
In the Republican mind, police and firefighters are parasites that take from the taxpayers and give nothing back. (I guess risking your life everyday counts as nothing). Many law enforcement officers consider themselves conservatives, and I hope that they pay close attention to the words of Rush Limbaugh.
Mitt Romney’s remark about needing fewer police and firefighters wasn’t a mistake. Republicans really believe that those who are involved in professions that serve the community aren’t giving anything back, and can be eliminated.
For his sake I hope that somebody shows up the next time Rush’s house catches on fire, or he has to dial 9-1-1. If Limbaugh thinks first responders add nothing now, maybe he will understand their value if they aren’t there when he needs them.

VOTED FOR? EXCUSE ME? What office do you think Rush was or is running for? The sad thing is – he's absolutely correct. I don't think anything he said will be offensive to cops or firemen or teachers – except perhaps those who think with their union card. His point was – they don't add to the GDP – and they DON'T. He was respectful and understands how that sound bite could be taken out of context and used against him. And BTW – with the exception of trying to gain members in their labor unions – since WHEN do LIBERALS support law enforcement? Isn't it always the Teamsters, the UAW or the SEIU that are forcing the lines in the street, squaring off with cops who just want to maintain order? But now you're all buds with law enforcement? I don't buy it.

Teachers, feirefighters and cops earn a paycheck and spend their paycheck. On all the things that private sector employees spend on. And they also perform a valuable service. If the GOP had it's way, there would be no public education and police and firefighting would be privatized. We tried this before in Europe before our revolution. Read your history my friend…

Man, you're really signing on to the Liberal stereotypes that are thrown around by the nut jobs arent'cha? F.Y.I. Most of us are hard working, pro-cop, pro-military, and pro-private sector.
Your boy Rush is clueless. Public sector employees contribute to economic growth "cause they spend their money. It's a symbiotic relationship..

If your community is not safe, protected and educated the private sector will not bring jobs to your community. End of story. So this notition that they do not contribute to the private sector is impossible. The private sector leaves to safer places when these "parasites" are not there. Does anyone think before they speak?

Firefighters, policemen and teachers don't contribute to the GDP? How insane are you? Teachers – without an educated populace, where are you going to find qualified workers, let alone scientists, economists, engineers to drive innovation and growth? Firefighters – if the factory or the store burns down, that doesn't impact the economy? Policemen – if the streets aren't safe, customers don't go to the store – the areas where the crime rate is highest tend to be the most economically depressed. This isn't just basic economics, it's basic civics. These are fundamental elements of a functioning society, and are foundational to any economy.

Really, Ron? As soon as these jobs are turned over to the Private Sector they will start trying to reduce costs by less training, taking away benefits and less pay. Then when they are needed in the field their lack of proper training will show and more lives and property will be lost. You and I know that the Private Sector is all for the bottom line and if that means cuts and less protection what the heck, just that much more in the pockets of the wealthy.

The sad fact is that in spite of knowing (because they are being told) that the republicans do not have the interest of working people at heart, fire fighters and police officers who vote republican WILL CONTINUE TO VOTE REPUBLICAN.
In spite of losing benefits and bargaining rights at the hands of republicans , fire fighters and police officers who vote republican WILL CONTINUE TO VOTE REPUBLICAN.
I know why but I will let you decide.

Well, in either Tennessee or Kentucky, they allowed a house to burn to the ground, even though the owner was begging them to put it out and offered cash. They'd gone to a subscription service and he hadn't paid his subscription yet.
I think it's happened more than once.
Smith
Jun. 12th, 2012 at 11:18 am
Your reference to Tennessee is not entirely accurate. There is a county there (Obion) that has chosen not to provide any fire protection to its residents. The residents support this, because it keeps their taxes low.
There are some cities nearby who, even though they have no obligation to respond outside of their city limits, have offered to respond to homes who otherwise have no fire protection service from their county if they pay a fee. After all, the taxpayers of the cities who DO pay for the fire departments probably wouldn't like to foot the tax bill for a county that chooses not to have fire protection of its own.
The cities and fire departments involved have pleaded with the county government over the years to just collect a fire tax from everyone so that coverage is available for everyone. The county continues to choose not to do it. It does appear after a recent incident a few months back that this may finally change.

So I guess the INCOME received by these folks, paid out of taxes, yes, is JUST SQUIRRELED AWAY, and NOT spent in the private sector — you know, for tthings like food, gas, clothing, entertainment…. After all, Rush, we all KNOW that public sector workers are just windup drones put back in a locker at day's end, onnly to be seen the next morning at crank-up–I mean, opening time.
Limpbaugh, if you were any more foul and stupid, you'd be a Republican. OOPS…YOU ALREADY ARE! THAT explains the stench………………..

All right, this is Mr. Potato-Torso-Marshmallow-Head talking, but he talks what he’s supposed to. The idea is that you’re supposed to pay by subscription for police and fire protection, and if you can’t, they’ll show up only to make sure your paid-up neighbors don’t get hurt when your house burns down and thugs are dragging your wife and daughters into the woods to gang-rape them and then sell them into sex slavery. Next it’ll be subscription courts… The Dissocialists like it that way. The sooner they can render “the little people” completely vulnerable to lawless bullies, the sooner they’ll have the social structure just the way they want it. Rush is a loudmouth, but he is a mouth…of an otherwise stealthy killer.

The sad thing is that the things he says, you will hear from conservatives, especially the "religious right" (dominionists) some time afterward. He seems to be the person working for the elites who "floats" ideas out… some time ago he used to propose a "poor tax" (meant to make poor people work harder so they get into a better tax bracket), and then a few years later I've heard they tried to do essentially that very thing. I expect we'll be hearing very soon how public servants are a drain on the economy from all quarters.
My opinion of him is now unprintable.

Not only do these public servants contribute by putting their wages back into the economy, but by enabling the private sector. Rush deftly says 'they educate your kids and protect you and your homes, and that's all nice and nobody is against that.' But he neglects to point out that they educate the workers and the next wave of job creators the private sector needs to survive. They protect the properties where products are produced and sold from devastating loss and, in so doing, keep insurance rates for businesses down (bonus!). They protect merchants from theft and robbery. To suggest they do not contribute is the height of absurdity. But Rush is no dummy. What pisses me off the most about Limbaugh, Beck, and their ilk: they truly know better. They cynically spew their swill to the ignorant and collect inflated paychecks from their benefactors, knowing all the while that their message is a total crock of shit.

The 1% lives in private, gated communities that provide police and fire protection to the residents as part of the amenities included by the owner’s association. Their children attend private schools, often boarding schools. So they have no need of additional police, firefighters, or teachers.
The divide between the 1% and the 99% grows wider, much as it did in France in the 1790s.

Unless all firefighters, policemen and teachers volunteer with no pay.. the work has to be paid for..either through our taxes or coming from some revenue. I suppose a private company could take over and provide the service and when used …charge a fee…either way..it has to be paid for. I wonder how much would need to go toward a teachers salary, and a fee when needing the services of a policemen or fireman (which most likely be an annual average fee)? How would those with a low income fare. As citizens ..can we be okay with their homes burning to the ground and children not being educated because they could not afford the fees/wages charged by a private enterprise.?

I think the aim of Rush and all the other Republicans, is to do away with public sector employees and have everything done by private companies. And, yes, if you haven't paid up your dues, if your house catches fire..tuff noogies. Your daughter is being raped? You haven't paid your dues? Tuff noogies. No cops for you. It saves the state money because they do not have to pay salaries or contribute to pensions, insurance, etc. Wages would go down, buying power would go down, standards of living would tank. But Repugs don't care–they will OWN these companies. And the money gap will widen.

For the first time EVER I’m going to have to agree with Limbaugh. The simple fact is there are too many incidences of raids to the wrong address, questionable shooting, pregnant moms being tazed, protestors being falsely arrested and Fullerton cops beating people to death +fire departments not helping the victim. These lawsuits cost money and are paid by the taxpayer. Not to mention states like New Jersey have public workers double dipping salary and pension where the pension plans are underfunded. To fix this, I agree that cuts are needed
Not to mention govt become too big and too inefficient for the costs associated. If accountability is too much to ask of our public officials then the unemployment line is the best place for them. Not to mention some of this funding is coming from the federal government. That means we are monetizing depth to pay salaries…. With little or no accountability to auditing to the work being done
Time to make change IMHO

The day is coming when we will need to provide a credit card with every call for emergancy services. They already do it for ambulances in many areas! Can you imagine calling the police dispatch?
“911. Please state the nature of the emergancy.”
“Uh… Medical, I think. I was just in a car accident. I’m bleeding and I’m in a lot of pain!”
“Thank you. In order to provide you with care, I need you to provide a credit card number.”
“I can’t! My purse was in the other seat! It’s crushed and I can’t reach it! Please, just get me some help! I don’t want to die!”
“I understand, ma’am but without a billing account, I cannot process your request. All ambulatory and wpolice services are pre-paid now and if you cannot pay, well… I’m sorry. My hands are tied.”
If they are allowed, this is our future. This is what these people will do to us and people will die needlessly.

In our county, ambulance services are charged. $600 for a 5 minute trip to the hospital (there was no way my wife could get me there, as sick as I was).
At least they let you make payments. The next time, even if I have another stroke (TIA) or heart attack, we're going to try to drive there. $600 is a LOT of money for us.

The GOP in all past recession recoveries promoted job growth in the public sector as a way to help the economy and put folks back to work. The only reason the GOP is not helping states and local governmnets keep their workers is to sabbatoge the economy and blame it on Obama. If we had the same public sector growth we had under GW Bush after his recession, we would have 7.3% unemployment instead of 8.2

"Republicans like Limbaugh want to keep the two types of employment separate."
Except when the loss of said employment is figured into the 8% + unemployment figures. Then, they are all to happy to lump private and public sector jobs together.

Poor clueless Rush ! FIRE PROTECTION, with one of the 3 major tenets thereof being PROPERTY PROTECTION, is therefore PROTECTION of one of the PRIMARY FACTORS OF PRODUCTION !! This IS protection of capitalism, so why does he label everything he fails to understand "Marxism 101" when he doesn't even understand how capitalism actually works and needs to be nurtured ??? Does he just bullshit off the cuff ? Never does a minute of research ? Why, in Christ's name, do people listen to this demagogue, is it because they're bored and lonely and this was the next best thing to listening to the emergency services scanner ? Well, if you keep listening to this one and let him influence you in any way, then there will NEVER be any traffic on that same scanner, because there will be NO ONE WORKING or even volunteering (as if they have any time left to do so trying to pay off that ridiculous mortgage) ???

The same could be said about the military. Theres a public sector if efter there was one. I wonder how he could have forgotten them …

I would certainly like to see our military run on a donation basis. That way if our military Complex that rapes us for the cost of their products wants to continue wars they have to finance them. We will see how quickly the very wealthy turn out to be staunch Republicans, or if they suddenly decide the sending middle class and poor kids to die Isn’t cost-effective.

I hate to be the one the burst ya’lls bubble….but the praise for 9/11 for first responders was very short lived…a d k mean very….not that the praise is why we do it but as a firefighter myself I can promise you that there is none…anyone that tells you otherwise is lying….again its not why we do it….rush is pissed because now all the firefighters Emt’s and police who were at ground zero need treatment for cancer an lung diseases, etc…. jobs are jobs…private of public…firefighters cops teachers etc all get paychecks and spend them on the same things everyone else does….he’s just a stupid moron who can’t do any research before he speaks….I’d like everyone for just a moment to think about the world we would live in without these men and women that do these jobs…. paid or volunteer I would like to add….wanna know what…when someone torches Rush Limbaughs house cause he’s finally pissed off the wrong person….we’ll still be there because thanks or not….this is what we do….

Nobody seems to have noticed the irony of Rush Limbaugh saying that police and firefighters contribute nothing to the economy when he, himself, sits behind a radio microphone producing nothing except wind and hot air.
In fact, the whole argument is a furphy. The GNP is measured in a way that includes police, firefighters and radio commentators. Each worker may be a PRODUCER or a CONSUMER or both. Anybody who earns a dollar, spends a dollar or saves a dollar contributes to the economy.
The crux of the argument is not so much economic. It really revolves around the Protestant work ethic. It is positing that SOME types of work are more "productive" i.e. more "worthwhile" than others.
It reminds me of when I saw somebody say to a security guard "Why don't you get a REAL job?" meaning their job was not really of value to society.

"Get a real job!"
That's one of the things said to me when I was hornswaggled into dominionism and they got me to drop out of college. It turned out that their idea of a "Real Job" was working as a night clerk in a convenience store (I know what it's like to have a shotgun pointed in my face by a robber), working as grunt labor in a Superfund site, where the ground I worked on was so saturated with toxic oil that a match could set it on fire, and all minimum wage with no benefits. A third job… the "good Christian" businessmen split my lip one time because I interrupted a conversation about angels… he'd had a minor emergency in his shop but that wasn't as important as his religious views and me being properly submissive. (According to church doctrine, I went and asked the preacher to intervene and we had a meeting – and the preacher and my boss were only concerned that I wasn't submissive enough to him and didn't give a damn about the injuries he did to me in the beating.)
That's what they think "Real Jobs" are… not jobs as computer programmer (which I was qualified to do in the late 70s and early 80s), or any number of other more brain-or-skill-requiring positions.
Rush probably thinks because the Firemen and police and Teachers aren't making some 1%er rich, they're not "real jobs". If you aren't miserable and doing something far below your abilities, it's not "real". If your work could leave you with a shred of self-esteem or pride, it's "not real".
No, IMO if anyone's job isn't real, it's Limbaugh's… he does no good for anyone except to promote (false) stereotypes and lies in support of the 1%, and they don't count. He doesn't help people, he doesn't save their lives or improve them, and all he does is vent hot gasses.

When consumers spend money, jobs are created. When consumers have no money to spend, jobs are eliminated. People whose jobs have been eliminated have no money to spend, which leads to more people losing their jobs. And so it goes.

Rush would be the first to call for a cop if his home was robbed, or a fireman if his home had a fire. The police protect ownership of property, they protect wealth. There would be far less private sector businesses in US if we didn't have a reliable police presence. These free market people want the all the benefits that our tax dollars pay for but they don't want to pay anything in themselves.
If the free market is so great why are these companies constantly scheming to not pay taxes, to get revenue out of the US, to use faulty materials, make phony investment schemes, in short cheat?

how the hell do they not contribute to the economy? cips and firefighters need new uniforms and equipment right? teachers spend money on supplies to help educate and motivate students. I know my mother in law gets stuff for her class all the time. all that stuff comes from private sector businesses.

Oh this is lovely… “Take and give nothing back”… How about the military sector? Why are these conservative crotchpickers not eliminating the soldiers and such? They are not contributing anything to the economy in the exact same ways as police and firemen… they are performing the same “protecting us” job as firemen and policemen… since military spending is nearly half of government spending, that would be a perfect way to change the balance… take some of that military and switch it to those teachers and policemen and firemen….

All I have to say is Karma kicks butt. I am really starting to believe that, he has no real intellect. Not sure WHAT is in his head, but it can not be a brain. Maybe a windmill, that runs on solar energy, and seeing how he is inside all the time on his radio show…he isn’t getting the energy he needs from the sun. I am very thankful for the police, teachers and firemen. I say let ole Rush leap into burning buildings or put themselves in between a domestic or bar fight.
