Rush Limbaugh Tells Republicans To Give Up On Ever Being Smart
On his radio show today, Rush Limbaugh claimed that the Republican Party’s problem is that they are looking for a nominee who is smart. He claimed that Obama is dumb, so smart doesn’t matter.
Here is the audio from Media Matters:
Stop. Based on what? See, here’s this thing again: “He’s very smart.” If there is anything that is hamstringing the Republican nomination process, it’s this smart business. I said on this program two weeks ago, and I sent this note around to some friends to prove it. I said it on this program. I said, “The thing that worries me…” In fact, that’s not how I put it. I said to a couple of people and on this program that we are — a lot of voters, a lot of people calling this program seem to be — focusing on one thing, and that’s whether or not we have a nominee that sounds smart. Because our voters are fed up with dumb-sounding Republicans. You know it and I know it.
Remember how the left made fun of Bush, thought he was stupid idiot ’cause he got deer-in-the-headlight eyes when he was on camera, and then the same thing was said about Rick Perry. Romney looks smart and everybody was happy about that, but Gingrich has come along, and I’m convinced that one of the things propelling Gingrich is that he sounds smart; and our side is longing, yearning for somebody to sound smart. Our side is also of the belief — and I’ve even argued with Snerdley about this and Snerdley’s argued with me on the air about this — that debates are factors in winning election, and certainly in presidential elections, I just don’t see it.
You can maybe cite a couple like Gerald Ford goofing up on what was and what wasn’t within the Soviet bloc, you know, Reagan saying in another Republican primary, “I paid for this microphone,” but in terms of there aren’t enough presidential debates. There’s probably only gonna be one or two with Obama. There aren’t enough of those things to matter. Organization, money, ideas, ideology, that’s the kind of stuff that triumphs. We have people who are so fed up with Republicans sounding like idiots and somebody comes along and sounds smart… But because, why? Because we’ve been told how smart Obama is; and why do we think Obama’s smart?
We haven’t seen anybody’s grades. We’ve got every Republican is getting a media anal exam on his religion, for example. The media hasn’t dared ONCE look into Obama’s religion, because that would mean looking into Jeremiah Wright, and Jeremiah Wright’s off-limits. Jeremiah Wright was off-limits in 2008, and we’ve been told Jeremiah Wright’s off-limits this election. So Rick Perry questions Obama’s religion or whatever he did in the debate so what does Obama do? Goes to church yesterday for the first time since Easter — and the press, rather than talk about the hypocrisy of that, praises Obama as a man of God-d and as a man of the cloth.
Rush Limbaugh is arguing that since Obama isn’t smart, Republicans shouldn’t be worried about choosing a nominee who is or sounds smart to match up with him. The problem is that Obama is smart. The president is very smart. A person does not successfully complete an Ivy League education and work as a constitutional law professor without being intelligent. (Obama also didn’t get his education the way George W. Bush did through family name and money. The president earned it on his own).
We don’t need to see Obama’s grades to know that he is smart. Just as we didn’t need to see George W. Bush’s grades to know that he was an intellectually disinterested president who was guided by beliefs, not facts. Limbaugh was actually spinning a variation on the uneducated conservatives’ claims that they have common sense instead of “book smarts.” (As if the two concepts are mutually exclusive and it is impossible for a human being to possess both).
The level of anti-intellectualism in the Republican Party is to the point where Rush Limbaugh is bemoaning the fact that some Republicans at least want to support a nominee who sounds smart. Limbaugh is telling them that they don’t need a smart sounding or intelligent nominee. They need a nominee who hates Obama and believes what they believe.
Rush Limbaugh believes that the GOP’s problem is that they are looking for a smart nominee, when the problem is the exact opposite. None of the previous anti-Romney candidates have been smart enough to get out of their own way.
Limbaugh’s whole the GOP needs to stay dumb rant demonstrates why Newt Gingrich has been able to surge in the polls. Gingrich has risen not because he is or sounds smart, but because he has convinced the Republican base that he shares their beliefs. Newt has become the frontrunner because he sounds smart while saying really dumb things.
What GOP primary voters really want is a nominee who makes their dumb ideas sound smart. Rick Perry couldn’t do it. Herman Cain failed at it, and so did Michele Bachmann. Mitt Romney sounds smart, perhaps too smart and they suspect he doesn’t share their beliefs, so he never really had a chance.
Rush Limbaugh was telling his audience that they need to embrace their inner stupid and stop trying to be smart. His message was that the path to true GOP enlightenment is through turning off the ability to critically think.
Limbaugh sees the GOP’s chance of defeating Obama starting to slip away, and all he can do is sit in his radio booth and pray for an even greater dumbing down of the American electorate.

Lumpy would be so disappointed if a Republican were elected in 2012. He’d have nothing to piss and moan about, and the outlet for his vile racist ranting would be gone.
He’s SO voting for Obama in 2012. :D

this must be Limbaugh’s way of telling people in order to be a good Republican shut off your intellect, and just listen. We will do the thinking for you. But on the other hand he has really good advice telling people not to worry about Obama being smart. You see Obama is smart in Limbaugh’s destroying the make it that much easier for Obama to win. Limbaugh knows that the Republican candidates are not very smart. In fact one microphone on the stage probably has more intellect than seven of them together.
Mr. Limbaugh, Obama did not run on his religion. All you can make a lot out of what Rev. Wright said, if you put in the context he was absolutely right. But then again we have a bunch of Republicans who are standing out there with their Christian flag flying and you’re not supposed to question them? Some of these loons run around with the American family Association and other completely bigoted groups. And you’re not going to get very far claiming that Jeremiah Wright was off limits because you never stop talking about him.
and you’re right, Gingrich is in from because he sounds smart while saying stupid things. and he is extraordinarily dangerous well doing that. Gingrich’s the most dangerous person up there both in terms of whether or not he gets elected and in terms of the things that he says that are not true but sound true. In other words he can take over Limbaugh’s job

I have said weeks ago here that Gingrich is far more dangerous than Mitt. Gingrich hits the people in the gut with his Obama hate and they will come out in mass at election time. Mitt on the other hand is so bland, with no emotional excitement and a little too rich for the tea baggers.
Just because the polls say that Gingrich would be easier to beat does not mean much now. And I am afraid the GOP might just push Gingrich, since they already had bland contestants who lost (Bob Dole, McCain).

I agree. I also think that how the Iran drone situation plays out could greatly damage Obama’s prospects. Will you vote for him if he gets us into a war with Iran?
If that happens I think Hillary might have to primary him out of the nomination to save 2012 from The Gingrich.

I love that Media Matters actually combs through all this shit on a daily basis – I could never do what they do without losing my goddamn mind.

just an observation..
judging from what clips i have seen of the debates several of them are not the sharpest knives in the drawer.. in fact if your looking for a sharp knive, you probably should try another drawer

There was a Cuban politician, many a decade forgotten now, who was called the spoon because his intellect could neither cut like a knife nor pierce like a fork, and the Republicans have a drawer full of spoons, as they pray the electorate likes soup.

I mean you see it. You think it. But to hear it come from their mouths, just amazing. When I was growing up, being smart was championed, expected and pursued with all forces. Now, the leaders of our nation’s political mobs are actually calling for Idiocracy. May Allah helps us cuz I imagine God is walking away right now.

“Allah” and God are the Same Guy.
Seriously. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are all Abrahamic religions, and they all worship the God of Abraham.
They worship Him very differently, in some ways, emphasizing different things, but … same guy. The God whom Jesus called “Father” is the same one the Muslims call “Allah” — the Creator of the Universe.
I am not a Muslim.
I am not a fan of Islam, finding many of its aspects creepy & violent … but then, I also feel the same way about Judaism & Christianity. There’s good stuff behind it all, but Humans are really good at overshadowing the good with their pride and rivalries and disputes over land and arguments about who’s a prophet and who is God’s son, etc. etc.

“What GOP primary voters want is a nominee who makes their dumb ideas sound smart.”
Brilliant summation.
Kinda makes me wonder whether ol’ Rush is trying to warn people off Gingrich, by suggesting that a candidate who sounds dumb should be perfectly acceptable, or if he’s trying to confound his listeners by veering off onto President Obama’s grades, wandering from there to Rev. Wright, then following this with the President’s sporadic church attendance, and somehow–in defiance of all reason and logic–leapfrogging from that mishmash to how this proves Obama is a hypocrite. Gotta say, if there was a point to that speech, it jumped the corral and galloped off before he ever got a rope on it.
Maybe this was one of those ideas that only seem good when you’re thinking about them–and sound like the braying of a jackass when you try to explain them to somebody else.

I don’t think Limbaugh is concerned with having any kind of logical point, he just spews obnoxious crap for a few hours then checks Media Matters to see what we’re responding to, then he doubles down on it for his followers.
It would be pretty easy to be Rush: 1. Spew foul garbage. 2. See which nuggets the Progressives are freaking out over. 3. Build on those items for the fans, making them even more obnoxious in the process. 4. Don’t go so far that radio stations drop your crazy ass.
#4 is the only part that might be challenging.

Don’t worry, Lumpy. We aren’t waiting for you all to come up with a smart Republican…After all, with the lifespan of the male somewhere around 79, that means I only have 31 years for you to do it in. I’m not holding my breath.

It is the simple minded that people like Rush need to remain relevent. Hence, why his listeners are called “dittoheads”. You don’t need to be smart or aware, we’ll do the thinking for you.

Rush is anti-american. He pretends to cloak himself in the flag but all he cares about is ratings. He’s willing to divide our nation with his hateful rhetoric just to further line the pockets that surround his hopelessly fat ass. The best thing for this country would be for Rush to choke on a mouthful of red meat at his next meal. Hopefully he’ll be dining with Murdoch and Ailes and they will coincidentally choke too. Rush’s show would cease to exist and Fox News might be purchased by someone with enough integrity to stop the dangerous masquerade that’s gone on over there for the last 20 years.

It’s funny, but it was only recently (the 2008 election) that I decided that the most important factor to me in deciding on who would get my vote is that they be smart. I guess it was all those years of burying my head in my hands when I heard GW say something inane.
