Dominionist Decoder: What Sarah Palin Really Means by Fire in Her Belly
I’ve been saying for a while now that the mainstream media doesn’t “get” Sarah Palin. Last week, when the astute Lawrence O’Donnell equated her with Trump, I understood his reasoning, but disagreed with the premise. Sarah Palin isn’t Donald Trump, and when she speaks of a “fire in her belly” she’s not using that term politically, but religiously. She means she has a fire of God in her belly to lead the country to Jesus. She means she is anointed to lead us.
She has a fire in her belly alright, but it’s not the fire of politics as the pundits know it.
Leah Burton, of “God’s Own Party” made the following Fire in the Belly video:
And it’s not just Sarah Palin. As Leah explains, “She is joined by many who share her biblical “call to service in the name of Jesus Christ” such as Tim Pawlenty, Mitch Daniels, Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum, Michelle Bachmann, and a whole host of frightening – albeit not as recognizable – theocratic politicians who are aggressively working to re-write our Constitution and anchor it in Old Testament Mosaic Law.”
The Dominionist politicians might use words that remind you of your own church, or your friends’ churches, but these are not mainline Christians. They seek Dominion over the government, and indeed over what they term the “seven mountains” of culture. Their goal is to return it to the earth to Jesus, and the US to biblical law.
In an earlier article, Ms Burton posted a letter dating from the 2008 campaign from Dr. Marlene Winel, who specializes in dealing with folks who have “walked away” and are recovering from fundamentalist sects of Christianity, who wrote this to Sarah Palin:
“Most people who have never been entrenched in the subculture of fundamentalist Christianity may not understand what this really means, but I do. Like you, I was raised in the Assemblies of God and I was a zealous part of the Jesus Movement. Like you, my life was consumed with seeking God’s will for my life and awaiting the imminent return of Jesus. …
You believe that every bit of the Bible is God’s perfect word. You have a supernatural view of reality where Satan is a real entity and where good and evil beings are engaged in “spiritual warfare” (Ephesians 6:12). Like Queen Esther, you believe that God has “called” and “anointed” you to lead America. This is why you have accepted blessing for office through the “laying on of hands” and prayer to protect you from witchcraft.
International affairs? Since your subculture has identified the establishment of Israel in 1948 as the beginning of the end, you would see war, epidemics, climate change, and natural disasters, all as hopeful signs of Jesus’ return. You would be a staunch supporter of Israel and deeply suspicious of countries like Russia identified with the antichrist in the end times literature. (You have publicly said that you expect Jesus to return in your lifetime and that it guides you every day.)
This type of Christianity is not about following the teachings of Christ (as in Matthew 25 on caring for the poor). It is about death — his death, our death, the death of the planet.
The fundamentalism that has shaped your thinking teaches that working for peace is unbiblical and wrong because peace is not humanly possible without the return of Jesus (1 Thess. 5:2,3). Conflict, even outright war is inevitable, for Jesus came not to bring peace but a sword (Matt: 10:34-37). Like millions of fundamentalist Christians, you may actually find joy in global crises because these things portend His return (Luke 21:28)….
How about science? As it has in your governorship, your interpretation of the Bible would trump scientific scholarship and findings. You would deny the human role in global warming because God is in control. More importantly, you would not make the environment a priority because you do not expect the earth to last….”
You really must read the entire letter, it will send chills up your spine.
Welcome to the new game of politics, where religion plays the role the founders sought to protect us from, a state sponsored religion or an official state religion. The next time you laugh at Sarah Palin because you think she’s dumb, remember that it isn’t that she doesn’t believe in science, it’s that she doesn’t CARE about science. It is irrelevant to her, because the sooner the planet explodes, the sooner Jesus comes back. And when you’re done laughing at her, realize that there are many more, less charismatic Sarah Palins out there, like Governor Scott Walker, whose ability to inflict harm via his beliefs is quite real. And some of them will run for President as moderate Republicans.

Now I am not sure I will fully agree that our founding fathers where trying to ‘protect us’ from religion, but I do not like the current direction of religion in politics.
If American politic become heavily influenced by religion, civil rights will be diminished. It is well documented that religious governments have civil rights issues, and we would not be an exception.

Susan, you’re correct to call out my failure to finish that sentence, which I did after your note. Thank you:-) It wasn’t as clear as it could have been, but overall, I think most of us agree that religion has its place but was never intended to replace our laws, nor were we intended to have one religion as the state religion.

While I would like to believe that palin had some altruistic religious conscience to account for her meandering grey matter, I find it to be less than credible considering her history.
She seems to alight rather than join or champion! She has a penchant for using the verbiage but not living it! I would poset that it is another form of usury with profit and limelight as the motive! Strangely, a leader wants to lead and she has given short shrift to the idea or the execution! Dictate where expedient to her image but not lead!
Rules do not apply to her or her family, compassion for other people is not in her metier, vitriolic verbiage is her parry, and real knowledge is not in her lexicon!
Cutsy…snide…veiled sexuality…name calling without regard to meaning are the limit of arrows in her quiver!
Yes, Dominionist as a concept is a concern at the very least but she is using it…not living it!

This is an article that needs time to digest. Please – readers – go through it all. I have had relatives who are/have been members of fundamental churches. If they have the sense to get away – it takes quite awhile to be able to think clearly. Some get there.
On another note – check out The Immoral Minority – Gryphen has an article about someone who is, finally, doing a book on “babygate”.

Thank you for your insight into what it’s like to leave one of these churches. I’ve heard horror stories, and I think we all need to learn more about this. It’s also important to distinguish between “mainline” Christians and fundamentalists Christians.
Gryphen is on a roll these days!

It’s scary. When I was a Lutheran, I’d never have recognized these people as Christians at all and I’ve been told by a former fundamentalist that she’d never have recognized my Lutheranism as Christianity. It astounds me that intelligent, educated people can fail to see the threat these theocrats pose to our democracy.

If we are not careful we will be ruled by the Christian Taliban. What on earth is the difference between the Taliban and those crazy Christians.? Is it the Burka?

That seems to be the sum of it, yes:-) And it is frightening, as we see what Walker is doing in WI.

I don’t consider Palin and her ilk to be “real” Christians anymore than the sad, vile clowns from Westboro Baptist. Palin and her buddies use their Christianity as an excuse for any agenda that suits them. Real Christians do good things without agendas. So do good people from many religions. I may have to answer for my sins some day, I don’t know. I hope Palin has to answer for hers. See you in Hell Caribou Barbie!

Lots of Christians and other religions do wonderful things for society and as a group. Sometimes they even work together to promote peace and tolerance, which demonstrates a value system that has integrity.

May. 30th, 2011 at 5:43 am
You are both wrong. Religion has NO place in society, period. If a group of people do good, than that is great. The fact that they are in a cult of people that do good doesn’t really change anything. Religion is self serving and as such I would be willing to bet that some of the people that do “good” do so in the selfish interest of an “afterlife”, the mere idea of which is preposterous. Religion is an abomination if there ever were such a thing. Religion has NO place in government, no place in school, no place in public and no place that I care to go. Hopefully, eventually religion will no have place at all.

It is not this Blache- Ingram- morphing- into- Bertha- Rochester- as- portrayed- by- Karen- Black character that scares me. As some otherwise brainless barking head said, it’d take a cataclysm to get her elected. It’s the ones who are good at masking who they are, who pretend to be moderates, who might even masquerade as Democrats. And not the ones high up only, but the ones who get into state and local government; not the elected only, but those who have infiltrated into the military and law enforcement. The most dangerous column is often the fifth one.

When facism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross. Sinclair Lewis
I’ve been reading Holy Terror: The Fundamentalist War on America’s Freedoms in Religion, Politics and Our Private Lives. Flo Conway & Jim Siegelman recognized in 1982 what is openly taking place today by the Far right wing. From fundamental think tanks promoting biased research (often quoted in the Senate & House Chambers) to gutting public education to promote Charter (private) schools.

palin had that fire in her belly when she ran for Governor.
She quit. She has plenty of examples of unchristian acts.
She is a liar and a fraud. Let her run on her Gov. experience.
She left because of the distractions.
How could she handle being POTUS?

Excuse me. Sarah Palin is no Christian even though she says she is. We all know she is a liar and will say anything to get attention. The words of Christ include the 10 Commandments which she does not follow and constantly commits sins of many of the 7 Deadly Sins including envy, greed, and anger and who know what else. This is not a Christian.

There is nothing about Sarah Palin that would suggest she is truly a Christian. On so many levels, she has repeatedly that her words about being one are just empty words, because her true character completely contradicts what she says. In her public capacity, and no doubt her private life, she has violated a number of the Commandments. She has blatantly lied about others, she worships money, and she bilks money from gullible people in the name of self-promotion. I have never heard her say anything that pertains to helping less fortunate Americans. She also encourages her minions to threaten folks who criticize her, or at least does nothing to stop them. She is a horrible mother who uses her kids as political props.
What it all boils down do is that she would use religion as a tool to oppress other Americans, like many leaders in foreign countries do. As for the fire in her belly, that fire would die if she actually had to do the hard work of governing such a huge country. It died when she quit on the people in Alaska, because she couldn’t handle those responsibilities. So, she and those who still support her are delusional if they think she could handle reponsibilities at least 100 times bigger.

News Hounds has an article on whether Fox News is any longer a limb of the Republican Party, or whether it has in fact become the trunk. They not only make a good case, but link to a Rolling Stone article on Roger Ailes that is truly frightening. Then consider that News Corps itself is but one member of the CNP. If anyone can put this windigo on the throne, it will be such a machine, its engineered crisis, and its subsequent torrent of propaganda, not to mention its election-tampering strategies.

I’ve been saying that they were driving the party for a few years now- in fact, many of the right wing barkers do. The party has to kneel to Rush Limbaugh and the nuts at Fox, because the base worships those machines. That’s why they can’t govern anymore; their base won’t let them compromise on the most basic things. They’re the extremist nuts the founders tried to protect us from, only they’re not the fringe anymore. An entire party has nationalized extremism in the name of Jesus and the flag.
