Next Up 2012 As Sarah Palin’s Alaska Is Not Renewed by TLC
//-->
It is being reported today that TLC has decided not to renew Sarah Palin’s Alaska for a second season, and that this Sunday’s two hour finale will be the last episode of the series. There are a number of reasons why the show would not be brought back. A monetary dispute over Palin’s salary for a season two, the negative publicity surrounding the show, and Palin’s 2012 ambitions all could have played a role.
Entertainment Weekly reported today that there will be no second season of Sarah Palin’s Alaska, “EW did its due diligence and discovered there are no plans to send uber-producer Mark Burnett back to Wasilla with Palin, who’s lured an averaged 3.2 million viewers to TLC with her show. So this Sunday’s two-hour finale of Sarah Palin’s Alaska appears to be its last.”
Popeater.com reported that TLC wanted to do a second season of the show, but Palin had some huge salary demands, “”Sarah knows to strike when the iron is hot and started talking about season two right after the show debuted to huge numbers,” a friend of Palin tells me. She knows that celebrities get millions of dollar for each episode of their shows and thinks she’s worth it too. Jennifer Aniston took home millions from ‘Friends’ and in Sarah’s eyes, she’s no different.”
The rumor is that Palin wanted millions of dollars to do a second season. In the world of cable reality TV this demand was at best unrealistic, and at worst delusional. Palin was never going to be able to be paid millions of dollars, but even if TLC would have ponied up the cash, there were other omens that the network was getting a little thin skinned about being in the middle of the negative publicity hurricane that follows Sarah Palin everywhere she goes.
TLC recently used the show’s hired blog to attack a blogger who was critical of some of the statements that Palin made on a recent episode of the show. If the network thought that they were going to harvest a public relations coup by giving the divisive and polarizing Palin a show, they either have not been paying attention how Sarah Palin operates, or they underestimated the American people’s ability to see through such an obvious attempt at political propaganda disguised as entertainment. Either way, TLC wasn’t prepared for the backlash, and may have decided that the negative publicity along Palin’s salary demands made season two a no go.
There is a third consideration at play here. Sarah Palin wants to be the President of the United States in the worst way. Committing months to a second season on TLC would prevent her from getting her political operation set up for the 2012 GOP primaries. If Palin would have committed to a full second season of the show, it would have been the clearest sign yet that she was not running for president in 2012, but by dropping the show, it looks like she is going full steam ahead towards a presidential run.
Sarah Palin’s Alaska didn’t work out quite like either party thought it would. Palin thought the show would rehabilitate her image by making America forget 2008, and fall in love with her and her family. She hoped that America’s new found love would propel her to the White House in 2012. Things have not quite played out that way. The show has been an addictive train wreck. It was must see television just to check out how Sarah could humiliate herself each week. Instead of helping her look presidential, the show revealed her to be petty and bitter about 2008.
Palin appeared just as hollow and uninformed as ever as she desperately tried to cling her image as All American Rugged Outdoors Woman. This image bit the dust as it was revealed that Palin can’t shoot. Palin also can’t fish, and she doesn’t seem to know much about the outdoors either. Sarah Palin’s Alaska tried to fool America into loving a person that is a figment of Sarah Palin’s own imagination. Goodbye, Sarah Palin’s Alaska. Although you should win an Emmy for outstanding comedy series, now at least we know that the comedy will continue as the Lucy Ricardo of politics sets her sights on winning the Republican presidential nomination in 2012.

After today, she is FINISHED! No GOP will want to be associated with her she is a political “Leper”!
And that is good, she has destroyed this great country and today people paid the ultimate price…

This isn’t surprising for other reasons. My in-laws are Limbaugh Republicans…my father-in-law a prototypical rugged individualist. His assessment of Sarah Palin was that she and her family were too into their designer clothes, and totally unfamiliar with the outdoors. He didn’t think she had ever held a gun before, and was thoroughly disappointed by the show.
“Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.” That is the defining line of the Wizard of Oz, and an allegory for Sarah Palin and her career in politics. The veneer has been pierced and she will now, slowly and painfully, descend back into irrelevance.
Good riddance.

@Michael
It is ironic that a show that she tried to use to rebuild her image exposed her as a total fraud.

@crystalwolf
I am going to have something up on Olbermann’s Special Comment later tonight. I don’t think Palin will truly be done until Obama crushes her in 2012.

Jason I really don’t think she will run, if she does it will be third party and JUST to “fleece” the low hanging fruit…

If only Palin had the tiniest ability to understand how Friends cast operated to get those high salaries. First of all, they were in a UNION. Second of all, they banded together (collective bargaining, not competitive with one another) and insisted that they all be paid equally, even though certain cast members were standing out as “stars”. Jennifer Aniston, America’s Sweetheart (who is actually also very nice in person) worked with her fellow cast members instead of against them. Jennifer Aniston is a person of class and talent who was willing to share the spotlight with her cast mates, all of whom deserve the credit of putting their individual egos aside to be treated as an ensemble. This is a notion foreign to Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin hasn’t earned “Friends” money and TLC doesn’t have it to give. Palin seems to not understand that she is on CABLE tv, doing REALITY tv, where Unions do not have a foothold. Maybe if she had to work for a living, she would understand that people who perform for a living benefit by having a union, as does the crew working behind the scenes unlike cheap reality shows that beat their crews down and work them 18 hour days with no overtime. Yes, Sarah, those “thugs” you moan about stand up for the working class people in this country and stars like Jennifer Aniston give them the clout to do it because people like her take a stand for OTHERS instead of just grabbing all the cash for themselves.
Sorry to rant, but when I first heard this I was outraged. Sarah Palin is no Jennifer Aniston.

I hate to say this, but I know who Sarah is when I see her, but I couldnt pick out Jennifer Aniston in a lineup.
I dont know why TLC decided to take on the bloggers for Sarah. Thats making a political statement as each episode was political. Seemingly harmless little shots like the ones at Michelle Obama proved she never has had the people at heart or else she would have had alternatives.
But to go for more money? She wasnt a proven option after one season, who could be? A little more money maybe yes. But campaigns take a hard toll on the bank account.
I really wonder Jason, if each week (after week 4 or so)she realized that she was failing to bring everyone around. You had to wonder as you note, it was a must see train wreck.
I will give her credit for some of what she did. How many of us really get to go to the Alaskan wilderness and see the incredible beauty? But I wont give her credit for seeing that beauty and sounding off like a shrill fighting banty rooster(how many of you have ever seen one?)

After today, Palin is history. No book, television program, short skit, facelift, etc. etc. can even begin to undo what she has done to herself with her constant hate. Palin has blood on her hands from today’s shootings. What kind of decent American kills an innocent little 9-year old girl? Sarah Palin has finally gotten what’s coming to her. She is OVER. DONE. Stick a fork in the bitch.

If this birthday is true of the little girl, she must be an angel! This tragic and horrible lost will live on well beyond her life. The American people must learn the message she innocently brought. And the spirit, bravery and strength of the congressman must also be addressed! The bravery of the nurse that treated the congressman on the spot must be looked at. This is about the spirit of America! Please end the hate, prejudice and bigotry now!

I’d like to say that when TLC announced that they would give voice to Sarah Palin, that I swore never to watch the network again. But alas, I never watched it to begin with. I remember when it used to be “The Learning Channel.” How ironic that it now gives voice to the anti-intellectual. I don’t watch Fox, why should I watch TLC???

It IS ironic that this show turned out to be another FAILED attempt on Palin’s part to salvage her image. The immaturity, pettiness, and anger at the 2008 loss never fail to come out in Palin, whether she’s doing a reality show or speaking in a public forum. If anything, this show only served to reinforce all the reasons why voting against McCain/Palin in ’08 was a wise decision. It’s also a reflection of her inflated ego that she tried to demand a lot more money. That ego has kept her from seeing that the show did not do for her what she wanted it to.
