Hardcore Conservative Saxby Chambliss Repudiates Norquist Tax Pledge
By: Hrafnkell HaraldssonNov. 24th, 2012more from Hrafnkell Haraldsson
On Wednesday, Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), told Georgia television station WMAZ that he had a problem with the Grover Norquist tax pledge. Chambliss, who votes with his party 91 percent of the time, said: “I care more about my country than I do about a 20-year-old pledge. If we do it his way, then we’ll continue in debt and I just have a disagreement with him about that.”
Yes, Saxby Chambliss is one Republican politician now willing to raise revenue. Grover Norquist’s Americans for Tax Reform shows that Chambliss is one of 39 Republican senators who has signed the pledge. There are 219 House Republicans entering the upcoming 113th Congress in thrall to Norquist
This is almost like one of Sauron’s Ring Wraith’s suddenly deciding he’s not kidnapping any more Hobbits. How do you not do the Dark Lord’s bidding and get re-elected?
Chambliss admits he worries about that. He told WMAZ that he is under no illusions about how Norquist will feel when he comes up for re-election. “But I don’t worry about that because I care too much about my country. I care a lot more about it than I do Grover Norquist,”
Which is not how Norquist hismelf tells it. According to the Washington Post, Norquist’s position is this: Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) and Lamar Alexander (R-TN) are those most likely to challenge his pledge. Norquist says, simply, “like being senators.”
Chambliss is right about the Norquist tax pledge only adding to the debt. He told WMAZ that this is the crux of the matter, the “basis of a ‘fundamental disagreement’ between the two.” But he says, “I’m willing to do the right thing and let the political consequences take care of themselves.”
In 2011, Chambliss was part of the “Gang of Six” and was one of its two leaders, along with Democratic Mark Warner (D-VA). They Gang of Six proposed to cut the increase of the debt but not the existing debt and other Republicans showed their true feelings about debt by criticizing the proposal..Humorously, the Heritage Foundation said it was too vague. And here the GOP ran a presidential candidate on vagueness.
Yeah, no moral relativism there.
And if you’re not already familiar with Saxby Chambliss, don’t get all exciting about the prospect of clapping him on the back with a nod of encouragment.
Yes, we need revenue. We need to break the hold Grover Norquist has on Republican members of Congress.
But would-be rebel Saxby Chambliss has proved himself no saint.
He has shown this on repeated occasions. In 2005 he voted against making money available to combat teen pregnancies through use of education and contraceptives, two “no-no” words for any Republican congressman.
In 2008 he gave Sarah Palin the credit for his runoff victory against Jim Martin, and Chambliss found the opportunity to express his racism. In 2009 he proved Sarah Palin’s confidence not-misplaced when, as our own Sarah reported, he was one of “30 Republican Senators voted against an amendment proposed by Sen. Al Franken that would hold the defense contractors accountable for their employees rapes, the GOP became the pro-rape party.”
In 2010, after a sleazy victory over triple amputee Vietnam Vet Max Cleland, he indulged in some shameless ”all gays must die” gay-bashing. As Sarah Jones wrote on that occasion, “The picture Chambliss’ history tells is an atmosphere of riotous, arrogant, wealthy frat boys laughing at the little people all wrapped in the image of a genteel southern gentleman who loves Jesus but hates social justice.” Just this year, to cap all this off, Chambliss stabbed our veterans in the back by being one of forty Republicans blocking the creation of jobs for those who had served their country.
NARAL Pro-Choice America gave Chambliss a rating of 0% in 2005, and in 2008, and in 2011. In 2006, the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) gave him a 100% rating. NRLC shot their wad when they learned Chambliss had won again in 2012.
No, there isn’t much good you can say about Saxby Chambliss. And you would not know any of his backstory from reading CNN.
But he is right about Grover Norquist.
And Grover Norquist is just bristling. He told the Washington Post’s Stephen Moore this week, ‘No one is caving,” Norquist insisted,
“Nothing has changed on the chess board since Barack Obama agreed to extend all the Bush tax cuts two years ago. Exactly the same players. Republicans still control the House and Democrats still control the White House and the Senate.” Then he delivers the clincher: “For 20 years Democrats have tried over and over to trick Republicans into breaking the pledge. It hasn’t happened. This isn’t my first rodeo.”
No lack of hubris there. But it is only fair to say this is not Barack Obama’s first rodeo either, and our president has shown himself to be a shrewd operator.
And then there is the effect of cold-hard, reality. Admittedly not a big factor in Republican thinking lately. But Republicans love to spend money. Democrats refuse to screw veterans so we can send more of them into the meatgrinder of the GOP’s endless war. Democrats refuse to screw the American people so Republicans can assign more lucrative defense contracts to build more missiles and guns to make the meatgrinder possible.
Republicans might just have to start waking up.
And Norquist would do well to reign in the arrogance. We already know he won’t put Americans first, where ideology has pride of place. You never know, Grover: enough Republicans might grow stones to break the gridlock. And it is not, after all, as though Chambliss does not now have access to Super-Pac spending as well.
And then where would you be? When you go all for nothing, you sometimes end up with…nothing.
And wouldn’t that be a sight?

What does it mean in a society when we make a PLEDGE to our flag to love and uphold its meaning of our country and constitution and then make a PLEDGE not raise taxes.
And thank you uber conservative Saxby Chambliss for being man enough to take your Pledge to the country more seriously than your pledge to a money-obsessed human being.

It’s about time they stood up to Old Grover. No senator in the United States should have ever signed a pledge to this one party individual and his big business beliefs. This pledge has done nothing but promote more upheaval in our country and, I hope during the next election cycle, they vote these individuals out. Congress is suppose to work for all the people, not just a select few as we have evolved into. Signing pledges with the Republican party makes me cringe as back in the 70′s my mother presented me with a pledge from the Republican party stating that I would always vote Republican. This made to realize that this party was not one that I wanted to be associated with.
As an aside, while watching Channel 29, a Canadian station, they spoke about how Canada is allowing miners from China to come in and take Canadian union jobs. I think we really need to start being more vigilant of this practice taking place here. It appears greed has no boundaries and that it is our countrymen and neighbors who will be taking the hit.

It’s not the first time Chinese coolies were imported to drive out American labor, and the kind of lives they lived, and deaths they died, because of that, is summed up in the phrase, “Chinaman’s chance” (more politely, the chance of a snowball in Miami).

That reminds me of the slavery conditions on American soil involving Chinese workers… and this is very recent history.
I forget which American possession (one of the American Pacific islands), but there was a bit of a blowup about it… American corporations on American soil importing Chinese “employees”, whose rights as human beings were ignored and they were treated as slaves.
Of course, slavery is still a big problem in this country… trafficking in sex slaves, wage slavery for migrant workers, and so on. The rich WANT slaves.

Maybe they’re starting to suspect that Grover Norquist has other allegiances besides to the US.
I think it really strange that they’d swear an oath to a man married to a woman with (real) connections, howbeit vague, to a terrorist organization, while vilifying an American patriot because she’s Muslim (which Norquist’s wife is also).
Plus there were Norquist’s connections to organizations providing funds to terrorist organizations.
Good questions for Republicans.
Of course, I think Norquist’s allegiances are to the rich and powerful, and not to some shady bunch of terrorists. His stances promote the international wealthy (and international corporations) and not the real people.
Of course, it could be argued that the terrorists do so as well… by providing a convenient target for frustration and boogyman to scare the faithful…

Chmbliss’s mean, ugly, viscious campaign against triple amputee Max Cleland was in 2002.
Has anyone ever investigated how Norquist became “the god” of the Republican party? His story needs to be investigated and shared with the public.

I secon that. Through what power does he make these officeholders swear oaths to him- and hold them bound?
I note, too that we are not talking about muslim connections, in general, nor about Arab connections, in general. We are talking about Saudi connections- *rich* Saudi connections. Like the Bin Ladins.

Considering that it’s Chambliss who’s forever notorious for defaming Max Clelland, a veteran who lost 3 of his limbs, I’ll believe it when I actually see it. While his words sound good, he will never be able to live down his disgraceful behavior in the service of winning the seat he holds today.

I suspect Senator Chambliss’s sudden epiphany about taxes has NOTHING to do with Norquist–but to put him politically on the side of enforcing the Bowles-Simpson plan–which cuts Social Security and other safety net programs. Yeah, he’ll come across as “defecting” from Norquist and all, but let’s watch and see what he actually supports and votes on. Only then will we know for sure what this was all about.

Chambliss is one of my senators. He is not what he appears to be. He’s a lot like Mitt Romney. He’ll say one thing, but with a little pressure from Wall St., his colleagues in the GOP, rich GOPers like Trump and the Koch Bros., or a push from Rush Limbaugh, he’ll change his position on issues. He wrote an op-ed about the Gang of Six a few months ago that showed up in my local paper. In it, he blamed everything on the president–the GOP obstruction, our high deficit, and the failure of Bowles-Simpson. Never mind that he supported the GOP obstruction every step of the way. In his mind, PBO is the problem. Expect no real honesty from Chambliss because it’s not a part of his character. This is why when I saw him in an interview on my local TV station, WMAZ, I wasted no time changing the channel to watch Family Feud. He began his run for the Senate with lies when he smeared Max Cleland, and he’s changed nothing since he won his seat.

Does the Norquist PLEDGE override our Senator’s oath when they are sworn into office?
Is this PLEDGE the entire reason for the GOP obstruction? Senators in the United States should never sign a PLEDGE to benefit just a select few, and cause gridlock for plans to resolve our nation’s financial problems.
We are one nation of more than one social class. We do not want a socialist economy.
1) We want Americans to work and earn and pay their own way. Many Americans want jobs and are still waiting for an economy that will create ‘good’ jobs.
2) We need education from higher learning institutions to be affordable/attainable for bright kids graduating from high schools and for adults, even elderly, to provide the needed skills for new jobs.
3) We have retirees, and elderly, and some truly poor, that need SS and Medicare/Medicaid to help keep up with inflation when they have worked their entire adult lives and are on a retired fixed income. Not everyone is born into a billionaire family.
4) We do have dead beats that need to clean up, straighten up and support themselves like decent human beings.
We PLEDGE allegiance to our U.S. flag, One Nation, Under God, Indivisable, with Justice and Liberty for All. (not Grover Norquist. )
Peace to America. May our elected officials work together and make exceptional, fair and just decisions for all.
God Bless America. God Bless Our Senators. God Bless Our President.

I commend Saxby Chambliss for his comments. I truly hope they are genuine. Our country needs our Senator’s partys to unite for the common good of our country and her people.
I am glad he cares a lot more about this country than he does about a 20 year old pledge with Grover Norquist for a select few.
Grover Norquist is a common citizen.
Does the Norquist PLEDGE override our Senator’s oath when they are sworn into office?
Does the Norquist PLEDGE hold Republican Senator’s hostage; that the ones that sign will be nominated for election over the ones that do not sign?
Is Norquist’s PLEDGE legal or is it a form of racketeering?

Note that he didn’t say he’d vote for the tax hikes, just “considering” it. Given his history, I’ll believe it when I see it, but even that would be a stretch.
The man is a lying monster.
