Scott Brown Accused of Stealing Valor Over Claims He Served in Afghanistan
Massachusetts Republicans seem to have issues with accuracy.
Massachusetts Senator Republican Scott Brown is being called out again for telling voters that he “served in Afghanistan”. Ironically, it was Scott Brown who introduced the 2011 Stolen Valor bill that would penalize the faux fighter who steals the glory from others to obtain some gain. The bill “would make it illegal for individuals to profit by knowingly misrepresenting their military service.”
Republican Vietnam veteran Doug Sterner told the Huffington Post that he thinks Brown’s claim to have served in Afghanistan, “(S)ounds to me like we just got another Blumenthal Connecticut, Mark Kirk type things there.” He added, “I thought it was seriously misleading. I think it does go to an issue of personal character and that concerns me.”
In his recent debate with Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren, Brown announced his service, which was actually a two week training event with the National Guard in which he did not face the Taliban, as pointed out by the Boston Globe earlier, “So he was wrong to state, in last week’s debate against challenger Elizabeth Warren, that he ‘served in Afghanistan.’”
Brown is a lawyer with the Guard not a combat troop, and in the past has trained in his home state. He requested to train in Afghanistan, and some claim that he did this so that he could photo op himself in fatigues instead of the dress uniform a lawyer normally wears.
Brown does technically serve the National Guard by training, but he didn’t bother to explain that he faced no enemies while there. Valor is defined as “Courage and boldness, as in battle; bravery.” Thus, to imply you faced battle when you did not is the spirit of Brown’s own bill regarding stealing valor.
The Senator explained, “The Stolen Valor Act of 2011 will ensure that those who misrepresent themselves as heroes, and try to profit from the service and sacrifice of others, are held responsible for their actions.”
“Stolen valor is the theft of our military’s principles of honor, which are measured through the individual sacrifices of our troops on the battlefield,” said William Blight, spokesman for the Middleboro Veterans Council. So, stealing valor is about stealing the sacrifices faced on the battlefield. And that is exactly what Sterner is saying Brown did by claiming he “served in Afghanistan”, when in fact Brown was never on the front lines of a battlefield. Thus, Sterner is suggesting in round about terms that Brown appears to be stealing valor.
According to HuffPo, the Brown campaign responded to Stern’s accusations by pointing to a forward in Brown’s book:
When I returned, it was not as a U.S. Senator but as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army National Guard, sent to complete my annual training at a military base near Kandahar. I dressed in fatigues and battle armor, carried a side arm in my holster, and lived, worked, ate, and slept alongside fellow U.S. soldiers and Guard members.
Brown’s rebuttal is almost more offensive than the original claim, for he sounds like someone playing dress up troop. Dressing in fatigues and donning battle gear for training is not the same thing as being in combat. Nor is eating or working side by side with our troops remotely similar to “serving”. I should know, I’ve done that while they were training.
You do not see combat while training. Your life is not in constant imminent danger. You don’t have to kill the enemy. You don’t have to see your fellow troops shot. You don’t have to see a child point a gun at you. These things matter.
Those who see combat with the Guard rightly claim their service, but training for two weeks is not serving in combat for a year and more, far away from your loved ones — there are no maybes about it. What Brown should have done was highlight that he has witnessed many of the fighting conditions first hand, though from the troops I’ve interviewed, carrying a weapon and shooting it at an enemy under fire are two very different things.
Still, Brown deserves credit for his service – he just needs to clarify that his service is not the equivalent of a combat troops’ service. He needs to make clear that he has not earned the valor of being in battle and he is not trying to mislead people into thinking that he has.
This is the second day in a row that a Republican has falsely equated some other kind of service with actually serving in combat. While all service is worthy on its own, that does not automatically render it the same as serving in the military in the front lines of combat. How could it be the same if it is not the same? You don’t learn everything you need to know about fly fishing by working in a bait shop. There is no replacement for serving in battle — it’s a one of a kind experience. Wearing the gear doesn’t automatically render you brave, or destroy your soul or steal your limbs.
This matters because it’s Republicans who want to start a new war with Iran, and I can’t help but wonder if they think they’ve served (seen war) by serving their Mormon Mission or training in Afghanistan, no wonder it’s so easy for them.
You haven’t seen war until you’ve been there. You haven’t served in combat unless you actually served in combat. It’s offensive and wrong to claim otherwise. Period.
Sterner, who is a Republican, is supporting Brown’s Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren, in part because he believes that expanding healthcare is “very much a matter of humanity.”

And Ann Romney thinking her boys are serving their country by helping to get their father elected to president. Her one son has done special duty by caring for Vets. Mit only did one mission in France instead of the jungles in Vietnam. Wonder where the “boys” served their duty…pounding the streets in the USA? Ann thinks she deserves a Medal of Valor for staying behind and dating other guys while Mit was in the trenches. It was so bad he ended up in the hospital over the stress. He should get an extra medal for that. Wounded in Combat! This whole family is Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs. They all need a Dishonorable Discharge for over acting and lying!

Romney men’s tough service to country: Mitt (France), Tagg (France), Matt (France), Josh (England), Ben (Australia), Craig (Chile) as Mormon missionaries.
My brother was drafted just after high school and went to Vietnam where he suffered injuries that plagued until his death.

AH, YES ! ME THINKS I HEAR THE UNMISTAKABLE WARBLE OF THE CHICKENHAWK ! MAN, THEY CHIRP A REAL GOOD GAME, DON’T THEY? CHIRP, CHIRP, CHIRP.
Just another lying “tough guy”. Mr. Brown is not unlike Romney, Bush, or especially Cheney.
Interesting: How is it that Romney claimed conscientious objector status to stay out of Vietnam, refusing to fight on “moral or religious grounds”, indicating they hate war and killing, then when he was safe, protested IN SUPPORT of thousands of BRAVE Americans going to Nam to fight the war for him?
Romney didn’t go, his sons didn’t go, and Brown certainly didn’t go. He only went for a photo-op.

Lucky for Brown the Supreme Court overturned the Stolen Valor Act and said it is permissible for people to LIE about their service. Free speech nets Scott a major pass on this. That should not mean voters take it and believe it. It just means Scott can’t go to jail for it.
And he’s worried about Elizabeth’s native heritage??? She is telling the truth. He is not.
Beginning with movie heroes who actually dodged service during WW II, we celebrate fiction over fact. Reagan, John Wayne, up to Chuk Norris, guys who wear makeup and recite pre=written lines in pre-scripted “action” scenes think they’re the genuine article. Why wouldn’t NON film delusional candidates engage in stolen valor – we don’t really seem to care.
America increasingly prefers fiction over fact, and that way lies the dissolution of civilization. Just ask the Romans or Marie Antoinette.

Scott Brown did that while simultaneously meeting with Kings and Queens. He is so full of shit he is not to be believed. Please Massachusetts, spare us another six years of this blowhard.

1) Around 80% of soldiers are not combat arms. Most will never fire their weapon in anger (soldiers who have seen combat have the CAB, CIB, or CMB badges – it’s not a large percentage of soldiers). Are they not serving? Want to criticize Brown for something? He was a LTC (not a COL) with no combat patch (at least, last time I saw a pic of him in uniform). But yeah, he served (albeit for a short amount of time) in Afghanistan. The original Stolen Valor law applied to people claiming medals they didn’t earn (namely, I believe MoH and Silver Star). He has done neither that, nor lied about his service. I don’t much like the guy, but check your facts and stop libeling a service member.
2) Chuck Norris was in the Air Force. Reagan was in the Army. Most people in America will never serve in the military period. They did, to their credit.

The only Army Reagan was in was in the movies. In what AF did Chuck Norris serve? As for Scott Brown, his tour of duty, if it can be called that, was for two weeks. You can’t be this uninformed.

That’s going to change a lot of things for the VA you better run along and tell them.

I remember receiving the National Defense Service Medal following the Gulf War; it was given to every service member on active duty during that time. I was in a tech school for the Air Nat’l Guard at the time, did nothing medal-worthy.
I actually RESENTED that medal, but I was told I had to put it on my uniform….
And this sideways PUKE wants to defraud EVERY Afghanistan vet out there? Is there a training video for committing hara-kiri for him?

Why not! If Liz Warren claims Indian heritage through family lore. Than Scotty can fluff up his tough military service career. 30yrs. in the National Guard. JAG. office I heard him say he served I believe he misspoke He visited Afghanistan on a 2week training tour. Will he get a service ribbon for it?

This is absolutely insulting to a huge portion of our military. The number of support troops that are needed to conduct these operations is usually higher than the actual troops that drop bombs and shoot weapons. To downgrade the importance of their role and the danger that they face even when pushing paper in a war zone is pathetic. Obviously the person that wrote this and anyone who shares it has no idea how our military really works and the danger all that deploy to a combat zone face. Scott Brown and any soldier regardless if they are active duty, guard, reserve, civil service, or a defense contractor puts their life on the line before their plane or helicopter even lands. Is the soldier that kicks a door down in an Afghanistan village in more danger? Yes. Is the soldier sitting in an office in Afghanistan safe? No. All are in danger even if it’s at different levels.

ANY man or woman who has served in the military should be insulted by this man.
THIS is the limp dick coward that would NOT risk his little finger to back you up or come to your aid in combat, or ANY dangerous situation.
This is the definition of cowardice and shamefulness.
Bad enough that he never really served in the true meaning of the word, but to try and lie to the face of ALL who have served and are serving in the military but especially to those who have come home missing limbs, with permanent brain injuries, with psychological trauma they will bear for their entire lives is inconscionable.
This is what a traitor looks like. Maybe not treason in the technical sense of the word, but in the meaning of the word and the damage that results, it is the same thing.
Shamefull.
What a coward.

Elizabeth Warren does look Native American. Her family lore is probably right. What % is probably small. However, you can be Native American without a drop of Native American blood. You can embody the Native American principles and support the Native American culture. You can equate with NA spiritual values. You can adopt NA as your prefered racial profile. And, you can be adopted by a NA community as a member. The NA make some of the best warriors in the US military. The Navajo served proudly in WWII and their language was even used as a code that remained unbroked through the war. A NA raised the flag on Iwo Jima and before every Pow Wow, they have NA military members march into the ring first carrying the US flag and dressed in their military uniforms. They are proud to serve in the military of a country that almost exterminated them.

Since his attacks on Elizabeth Warren based on real or perceived ethnicity haven’t been working, it looks like Scott Brown is trying to get Brownie points for bravery in battles he didn’t fight. He is truly pathetic, and I hope he goes down to a defeat filled with disgrace.

To all the naysayers who think that somehow Brown didn’t serve & so shouldn’t say he did because he wasn’t there long enough or wasn’t in combat, let me present you with a scenario: a young man in the military goes out with his unit on a two week training mission aboard an aircraft carrier. The young man isn’t going to see combat, he just works on the aircraft. During a launch, the engine of one of the aircraft literally explodes and sends debris flying and the young man is hurt, permanently disabled. Are you saying that because this young man didn’t get hurt in combat or that he was only “training” he did any less, gave any less for our country than a person who sees or saw combat? Trust me, it can be just as dangerous and just as important to be in a support position and while what this senator is doing may be wrong, I think it’s unfair and incorrect to make blanket statements regarding support staff and whether or not they’re in danger and/or whether or not seeing actual combat is any more or less dangerous than a training mission has the potential to be.

Unbelievable! Let me start by stating that I MYSELF am a Veteran and highly offended by your statements that reduces ANYONES service! Your analogy of learning about “…fly fishing by working in a bait shop.” is WAY off base! Those SOLDIERS and SAILORS and AIRMEN STILL served their country. You can’t quantify someones service as being worth any more than anyone else, w/exception to Viet Nam, WWI and WWII. Those guys were DRAFTED… From the end of Viet Nam to today, this military’s ALL VOLUNTEER! You can’t discount MY service or anyone else for that matter. I served on an Aircraft Carrier during the Libyan bombings raids in the 80′s, and it was MY ship who fired the missles. But I don’t DISCOUNT MY service as compared to another. I had the HONOR of serving when we were STRONG and through that strength came PEACE! You’re going to discount MY service for having the fortune of serving during Peace time? We STILL had to train every day, just like we WERE at war! I was STILL required to get on that ship and float around the IO or the Persian Gulf for 9-12 months at a time. When we were in the Persian Gulf, it wasn’t a JOKE, even though it was peace time. We had to be VERY vigilant at our jobs. We worked HARD and although it WAS training, it was NO JOKE! I see the same thing in this situation. It’s an ALL volunteer military now… He didn’t even HAVE to do THAT. But he did! His 2 week training was JUST as important as the Soldiers on the line. THAT’S what he signed up for! If it came to the point where they DID call up that Guard unit. I guarantee you, that Soldier beside him will be DAMNED GLAD that he DID train for 2 weeks in Afghanistan or Iraq! I take offense to you discounting ANY ONES service. At least he didn’t claim “Native American” status to garner FAVOR in getting into Law School. At least he didn’t CLAIM to be a Lawyer and even DEFENDED parties in Court… yet we find out she has NO BAR license in ANY State and NEVER has had. Now that’s…

Well Gary… we’re NOT IN Viet Nam! That may be the way it was when you were in the Spanish-American War, but in TODAYS military they’re referred to as COLONEL. Just like a Lt. Commander in the Navy is referred to as COMMANDER!
