She’s not talking about the student who sat four rows behind her in the lacture hall bleachers twice a week. She’s talking about someone she roomed and shared with. If, when you are that young, someone at length betrays and humiliates your friend and roommate like that, and then threatens you into shutting up, you remember EXACTLY who did that.
